Philadelphia Eagles Draft Recap: Thoughts & Comments
Now let’s all take a deep breath, it’s over. The hours upon hours of tedious “mock-ing”, prospect ranking and compiling of team needs is out the window. All the things that the Eagles were predicted to do, they didn’t do, as is the norm now and days for the Eagles in the draft. Luckily, this time there was no QB taken, no controversy stirred up, this draft was a normal one, in which Andy Reid and Company, once again, did a tremendous job.
- To start things off, the Eagles absolutely robbed Carolina, getting a 2nd and 4th Rd. Pick this year and Carolina’s 1st next year. It’s time for us to start rooting against the Panthers.
- Then, even though they had traded down in to the mid-2nd round, they get an absolute force at DT, who will only help improve their D-Line rotation.
- Then, with their 2nd pick, in the 2nd round, they take the man most people expected them to take with the #19th Overall pick. If that’s not doing a hell of a job, then I don’t know what is.
- They also added a guy who, coming in to his Junior year, was perceived as the best CB in the nation. Problems off the field, and a knee injury, kept teams away, but if he recovers back to his true form, he is going to be one hell of a steal in the late rounds.
- Quintin Demps, Mike McGlynn and King Dunlap all could be viable starters in my eyes.
- I don’t know too much about Bryan Smith, but what I’ve heard is that he will most likely end up being a linebacker in the NFL. After looking up on him a little, he is quite undersized for a DE, but then again so is Trent Cole.
- Mike Gibson out of California could either become the next Jon Runyan, or the next Todd Herremans, we’ll hope for the first. No knock on Todd, but I’d prefer another Jon.
- I like Joe Mays, he may have been my favorite pick in the draft. He’s short, but he is an absolute tank when you look at him. He has the exact size and frame of Curtis Lofton out of Oklahoma and ran a slightly slower 40 time. Mays will be a force on special teams this year without a doubt.
- Andy Studebaker is this years Chris Gocong, he has virtually the same skill set and size as Gocong, and he comes from a small school where he racked up the sacks.
All in all, if I had to give the Eagles draft a grade, I’d give them a B+ to A-. They got a lot more talent than people are giving them credit for, and they also got Carolina’s 1st rounder next year, which could prove to be a pretty valuable pick depending on how the year plays out. So don’t panic Eagles fans, we know Andy does this every year, yet our picks, besides the WR position, always seem to pan out well. Now what do we have to look forward to? Training Camp.

Final Thoughts on the G-Men to repeat for SUPERBOWL in 08!!!!!!
Think about the offensive weapons that Eli Manning has at his disposal now. Jacobs, Bradshaw and Ward in the backfield. Burress, Toomer, Smith, Manningham, Moss and Tyree as receivers.
(I could see Moss fighting to keep his roster spot). Shockey, Boss and Matthews as tight ends. There is so much depth on this team right now, and I think offensively the GMen will be even more explosive than they were last season. I also think the defense looks even stronger following the draft. I think Kenny Phillips has a lot more upside right now than Gibril Wilson ever did, and he will instantly upgrade the secondary. If I had to guess, I think Phillips is the starting free safety and Sammy Knight is the strong safety for the opener. I expect Thomas and Manningham to contribute right away on their respective sides of the ball and the rest of the rookies to make an impact on special teams. There is more depth on the Giants right now than ever before, which is key in the NFL.
We can lose a player or two due to injuries, knock on wood… which are bound to happen, and we have a guy who can step in and play at almost every position. You have to be excited with this draft class as a Giants fan. At first glance this was another job well done by Jerry Reese and the front office.
Oh yeah…and the Giants SB win set the Eagles fans insecurity back 10 years.
I guess I would be pretty depressed if during this decade my team won the division 5 times so far and still had the big goose egg next to SB titles. Considering the team that beat them in their only SB appearance during the last 25+ years was the team that the Giants beat in an all time classic game to capture their 3rd title makes it worse.
Yep!!!!
The NY.Giants…they went through everybody livin’ room, all the way to their kitchen, and brought back a 5 pound bag of SUGAR.
SUGAR????
Cause the 11 straight wins on the road was sweeeeeeeeeeeeeeet!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
PLUS…Eagles sweep.
the GGGGGGGGGGGGGGGGGGG-Men!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

typical eagles perspective…every guy is going to be a pro-bowler….until the season starts and then everybody sucks!!!!!
May 1st, 2008 at 11:54 am
And when it’s all said & done…i still Believe, it will be Eli -vs- Peyton in SuperBowl 43!!!!!!!
NY.Giants ain’t done just yet, or no time soon!
You know what they say…as soon a you get that first taste of Victory, you want more!
It’s like a PittBull when he get’s that first taste of (Blood)…or like, you was out there just chilling…and all of the sudden Bam! (your in a streetfight) and the person your fightting (He split’s your sh*t above your eye…) then you turn around and tell your friend, get me a stick of Butter at the coner Bodega
and your friend say’s…what’s the Butter for????
And you tell him…so i can put some on top of my eye,(you know)…round 2 son!
Anyway Go Giants…the GGGGGGGGG-Men!!!!!!!!

How can anyone say that the Eagles had a great draft. They traded away their number 1 pick again.Plus drafted a player who cannot play until 2009-and thats only if he doesnt go to jail. They kept trading down.I only see 3 really good players they got.Someone please take Andy Reid out of the Draft picks.

Larry - If those three are Laws (who will show his quality as a pass rusher, not just a run stopper this year), Jackson and Demps (big time player, that guy, just watch), you know what, I’m OK with that. Our Dline improves, especially against the run, our return teams improve, which is a HUGE boost and wins us 1 more game right there, and our safety situation improves. If only of of McGlynn, Gibson or King Dunlup turn out to be legit Olineman, we’ve done a HUGE service to the team. I also think Studebaker could be the next Gocong. I really see 9-10 wins for this team. Maybe 11 on the outside, if Dallas slides as much as I think they might.
