DeAngelo Hall to Raiders? Deal close to being done.

The AJC is reporting that the Falcons are close to sealing a deal with the Oakland Raiders for cornerback DeAngelo Hall.  The deal is reportedly for the Raiders’ second and sixth round picks in this years draft.

Hall was reported to be in Oakland working on the terms of the deal including a new contract with the Raiders.

This deal comes a shock due to the apparent minor compensation the Falcons are receiving for trading Hall.  It was reported earlier this month that the Giants were offering their first round pick (#31 overall) for Hall and that up to seven other teams were interested in bidding for Hall’s services.

Hall is 24 years old and regarded as a top corner in the league.  He has been prone to losing his cool and being a very vocal player on and off the field.  Could this be the reason the Falcons aren’t getting more for him?

The trading of Hall, if it does happen, would add to the speculation that the Falcons will adopt a cover 2 defensive system this season.  The cover two requires bigger, stronger CB’s who can jam receivers at the line and cover the short zone before handing them off to the safeties who sit deep.

Should this deal become finalized it would be the 4th big name veteran to be purged from the Falcons in the last three weeks.  Rod Coleman, Alge Crumpler and Warrick Dunn were released earlier this month and it appears that new GM Dimitroff, along with new coach Mike Smith, are making their mark by establishing a team with a new identity.

***Update****   ESPN reports that the Falcons and Raiders have agreed on a deal for the Falcons second round pick.  ESPN also reports that Hall and the Raiders have agreed on a multi-year deal.

    Gerald:

Sorry, but I do not necessarily agree that Oakland’s #2 (number 36 overall?) is minor compensation for a pain in the ass that will end up being overpaid by the Raiders. We have to keep in mind that part of the equation these days in making these trades is the cost of the player down the line and the cap hit you take. Hall is not worth all that guaranteed money. Plus he doesn’t want to be in Atlanta anyway. So, I say adios and I’ll take the high second rounder for him. If Dimitroff does his job correctly, that number 36 pick will turn out to be a starter for us regardless of the position. I am starting to seriously envision someone other than Matt Ryan at #3 and with these high second rounders, we can get still get Chad Henne who is a better value in the 30s than Ryan at #3. In this draft with so many unknowns and not that many true blue chippers, it’s becoming apparent what Dimitroff’s strategy is. We now will have our own # 1 plus three second round picks to either keep or use to move up if there is a player he feels we absolutely have to have. I also like the idea of purging this roster of the disgruntled players from the Vick era. I love what Dimitroff is doing. Can’t wait for the draft - we now have enormous flexibility. All he needs to do is select the correct players when our turns come up and this is a better team by light years.

Pickett, the lesser value I was talking about was we went from a potential FIRST rounder from the Giants and several other suitors to a second round pick. The Raiders are paying him close to Assante Samuel money which means they must have similar value. I think Samuel would dictate greater than a second round pick.
We’re up to 10 selections in this draft with compensatories to come. We will get some serious competitors for sure.
I was on the fence about trading Hall. I was tired of his antics and his hot and cold play but I always felt that if he shut up and just played, he would be a great one.

I don’t think Jerry Reese’s offer from the Giants was ever a serious one. Reese is a famous poker player and eschews high priced free agents or high-priced trades. When they realized Hall was asking 10 million a year (Asante money) that deal was deader than dead. As far as several other suitors, as you said, who were they and what were they offering? If they were serious about a first rounder for Hall why were those deals never done? I just think that these days, GMs are willing to shell out big money only if they are absolutely certain that the player they are getting is not a potential problem and Hall happens to be a bigger big-mouth than me and I wouldn’t sign me!! I do agree with you that Hall if he would have just concentrated on playing football could have been a great one. As it stands the deal is not done yet or have you heard anything more? Anyway, if we get the #36, I’m satisfied. We’ll get a good player and for a lot less money.

Just happened to see on ESPN Mike Mayock’s mock draft. He has Miami taking Matt Ryan # 1 and the Falcons taking Glenn Dorsey with our #3. I thought Dorsey had injury questions. Thoughts?

As far as other suitors, ESPN had reported up to 7 teams were interested. They did not disclose what they were offering with the exception of the Giants.
I just think that if the Falcons held out a little longer they might have gotten more. I want to get another pick in the first to get Brohm. Maybe we can package some of our second round picks.

As far as Dorsey, I love the guy and he would be a monster. The injury question has to be answered 100% before we can spend the #3 pick on him.

As far as an update, I have only seen this:

Hall told the Atlanta Journal-Constitution on Saturday that despite published reports, a trade to the Raiders is not imminent.

Earlier in the day, ESPN reported that the Falcons had agreed to send the outspoken Hall to Oakland for second and sixth-round picks in April’s draft. The report said the final obstacle is negotiating a new contract. He is in the last year of his current deal.

The Journal-Constitution, citing inside sources, reported that Hall’s agent Joel Segal is negotiating a new contract with the Raiders. According to the report, Segal could not be reached for comment.

All of this was apparently news to Hall.

“As of right now, we’re still at the same stages that I was at with every other team,” Hall told the newspaper.

“New York, Washington, Dallas, and Jacksonville. Nothing has been OK’d on my end. Unless they agreed to something that I don’t know about, but I don’t think no team is going to sign me without talking to me and getting everything right on my end.”

Regarded as one of the top corners in the league, Hall has made it very clear he wants to be traded.

The eighth overall pick of the 2004 draft, Hall had five interceptions and 70 tackles last season. The 24-year-old cornerback has 17 career interceptions in four seasons.

Dallas offered their #28 pick in the first round. That’s all I really know. The Chiefs, Steelers and Eagles were also suppose to be interested, but I know the Steelers backed off a few weeks ago and since the Eagles signed Samuels they don’t need Hall.

Good player, potentially great player…in 5 years could be looked back upon as one of the best corners ever…but if his head ain’t right, let him go and wish him luck.

He is a very good player. But he’s not as good as he thinks and doesn’t play up to his talent level really. Plus, he is a headache.

    GERALD

The Giants were giong to give up the 31st pick out of 31 picks in the first round b/c of spygate.

The 32nd pick will be miami, the 33rd St Louis.

Atlanta controls the 34th and you would be trading for the 35th (not the 36th pick).

From Atlanta’s perspective they only lose 3 spots and don’t have to pay first round money plus you get an additional pick.

The Raiders are giving MORE compensation than the Giants were offering. Let’s not forget that the Raiders 2nd rounder is just 3 picks after the Giants 1st rounder (curiousgill you are wrong. The Raiders have the 3rd pick in the 2nd because Atlanta won the toss and got the 3rd pick in the 1st. They alternate in each round). You add the 6th rounder reportedly in the deal and the Raiders deal is better. That is, of course, if the Giants rumor has any merit to it at all. And since when is a high 2nd rounder and a high 6th rounder “minor compensation” for a loudmouth, me-first, corner who loses his cool? That is not minor compensation for a guy who doesn’t have all of those negatives working against him. As a Raider fan I personally hate this deal and hope it falls through. We don’t need Hall but we do need that 34th pick to fill some glaring holes elsewhere on the team. We also need to use the money it will take to to sign Hall spent on Nnamdi Asomugha who is a better cover corner than Hall and is the consumate team player and professional.

  13. Gerald Laskowski says:

    March 17th, 2008 at 5:39 pm

Right now the deal on the table is for just the second round pick. The few spots between the Giants pick and the Raiders might seem insignifigant but its big enough to make a difference when the Falcons are looking to fill many holes. A player they covet could be snatched in that gap.

Bottom line is that I really though Hall would command more then either of those teams were offering. The Matt Schaub trade got us better value didnt it? So 31 or 36, I am just shocked that it wasnt better than either of those. I guess teams really are turned off by his antics or just dont feel that he is as good of a corner.

By the way, based on some of the draft value charts, the 36th pick along with a 6th round pick is still not as much value as the just the 31st.

Here is an example of one of the value charts.

apparently not only were the giants offering their 1st round pick but also their 5th round pick. it was the money Hall wanted (Samuel-esqu paycheck) that made Jerry Reese decide not to pursue the trade.

As a Raiders fan I hope this deal never goes through. I honestly don’t think it will happen simply because Hall has said he wants to go to a “winning team” and I very doubt he views the Raiders as a winning team, plus we can’t really afford to pay him the type of money he wants to pursade him to come here.

    Hi to all,

Giants fan here. The rumor that I’ve been hearing is that the Giants wanted the Raiders Aso more than any other cb out there. The fact that the Falcons and Raiders are working a deal is supposedly favoring the Giants’ chances at working out a deal for Aso. The way the rumor has it is that the Raiders won’t have enough money to go around for Kelly, Wilson, Hall, and than they will have to find the cash to resign Aso. This is wear the Giants still plan on working something for Aso. Like I said, just rumors from Giantsland.
I for one (and many other Giants fans I know) really got excited about the opportunity for Hall. The fact that he wants Samuel money didn’t help though. The feeling around here is somehow Reese will get what he wants (Aso) or he’ll be fine with going into draft day with a plan to work something out. Either way, he’s a shrewed business minded man, and it worked last year for us. We as Giants fans are very interested to see how this whole thing pans out. Good luck to you guys (Falcons/Raiders fans). By the way, William Joseph was the worst signing. He’s horrible, and won’t perform for anything. Gibril Wilson will make some plays, but will give up quite a few as well. Way too much money spent for him. Nevertheless, good luck to all.

    Aaron
