Falcons Experiencing Rebirth

We often hear the term “rebuilding” when it comes to football teams.  A team that falls from grace often goes back to the drawing board, rethinks it past and current strategies and begins to rebuild itself into a competitive team.  The Falcons have been given that distinction this season.  After a horrifying 2007 the team made some big changes in the front office and has released some key veterans but I wouldn’t classify this as a rebuilding season.  Its more like a rebirth.

When a house burns down you go out and grab some lumber and begin rebuilding.  When you build a new house, you have to dig a hole and pour a foundation.  After that you grab your wood and start building the house.  The Falcons haven’t even mixed the concrete yet let alone visited Home Depot for the lumber.   Rebuilding assumes you have a foundation, a basis from which to start.  The Falcons have practically wiped clean all remnants from last season and are starting from scratch.  New GM Thomas Dimitroff has shown that he is in charge by purging former McKay acquisitions and his vision of building a club with players that emphasize team first is starting to come to fruition.

So, what does that mean for Falcon fans?  It means that the wait for a taste of the playoffs will most likely be much longer than sooner.  Yet there is a silver lining.  Dimitroff is building this team for the long haul.  A team that once assembled and seasoned will be a consistently dominant force in the NFL.  You wont find Dimitroff using the Daniel Snyder method of buying a few high priced stars in the hopes of immediate gratification.  This young GM is taking his time and doing things the right way.

As a Falcon fan for 35+ years I have sat through some miserable seasons and I certainly don’t look forward to anymore, but I will gladly sit through a season or two of more bottom feeding if there is a big light at the end of the tunnel. I believe that Dimitroff has turned on that light and while it might only be a pin hole now, I foresee it becoming bigger and brighter as we move through the draft and this season.  Thanks to this rebirth, come 2009 that small light will be well on its way to becoming a blinding force that will translate into more wins, more often, for many more years to come.

Thanks, Gerald. Great post. I could not have said it better. Yes, it will take a couple of years and I love your point about the Daniel Snyders of the world going wild on high-priced free-agents who are supposed to lead teams to the promised land. It hasn’t, is not, and will not get them where they want to go. Look at Jerry Reese and the Giants and how they run their operation. They had interest in DHall but when they stepped back and reconsidered they realized that an acquisition like this would run counter to everything they believe, so they backed off. Winning in football is about three things (athleticism is a given) - (1) desire, (2) controlled violence, and (3) intelligence (professionalism is implied). We need players with all three elements. This is why Dimitroff has moved so quickly to purge the roster. I have never been so excited about an upcoming draft not only becuase of the players we might get but a chance to see Dimitroff in action on draft day. This will really give us an idea if this young man has “it” as a judge of talent. I hope we focus on linemen - either side of the ball will do.

FYI, while editing some comments that contained some questionable language, I ended up losing some posts, some of which were still being commented on and had some good discussions going.

If anyone wishes to continue those debates/coversations I can be reached at my email listed under info next to my pic.

    Cheers.
