Giants 101

Kevin Curtis Visiting The Giants Tonight

While the news on the running back search has cooled over the last few days, the Giants have turned their attention to Wide Receiver Kevin Curtis, formerly of the ST. Louis Rams. According to many of local blogs he will be visiting with the Giants this evening.

Curtis, who went to Utah State has been in the NFL for four years. While the first year he did not play much, he has been a regular contributor for the Rams in the last three seasons. With the signing of Drew Bennett and Tory Holt and Isaac Bruce already in place, there is no place for Curtis to resign with his former team. Early reports in Free Agency had him signing with the Lions to reunite him with his former coach, Mike Martz.

Curtis has already visited the Vikings last week and the Lions over the weekend but left both teams without a contract.

With the lack activity from the Giants maybe tonight will be the night they make some noise and go in a direction that few expected them to go to start free agency. With the many needs on this team, few expected them to be active in the Wide Receiver market, but they have one of the top receivers available coming in for a visit.

With Amani Toomer coming off an injury and getting up their in age, Sinorice Moss contributing very little last year, and Tim Carter being a complete waste, the Giants could use another good receiver. If Curtis was to sign here, I would imagine he would either start alongside Plaxico Burress or be the third receiver if Toomer was fully healthy. Either way, he would be a big part of this offense and really give Eli Manning another weapon.

UPDATE:

According to pft, Kevin Curtis has fired his agent Tom Condon, after Condon was unable to finalize a contract with the Detroit Lions. Curtis now has to wait five days to sign a new agent or must come to an agreement with a team himself. This may now change his plans, so we will have to wait and see if he still visits the Giants this evening.

Other Giants Notes:

According to the Star Ledger, Amani Toomer restructured his contract slighly but no word of the impact, if any on the salary cap.

Other Notes:

Chicago Bears have traded running back Thomas Jones and their second round draft pick, number 63 overall to the NY Jets for their second round pick from Washington, number 37.

Brad Johnson has signed a three year contract with the Dallas Cowboys to back up Tony Romo.

According to NFL radio, Kerry Collins has resigned a one year deal to remain with the Titans.

I disagree that the Giants overlooked the WR position. Take away Plaxico Burress and the Giants have next to nothing. Amani Toomer no longer scares DBs and he no longer runs away from anyone.

    It’s Sinorice, not Santana, Moss.

I’d like to know the restructuring details of Toomer’s redone contract.

I think you are way too tough on sinorice who got little to no playing time and almost never got the ball thrown to him. He was a typical waste of talent Coughlin rookie who was given no time to find himself.

    Frank-

Are you seriously trying to tell me that Toomer is “next to nothing” at receiver? The guy is our most reliable receiver and he is one of the most clutch players in football. Late in the game, Eli goes to him (when healthy). Not Burress.

  5. dante From Florida says:

    March 5th, 2007 at 5:13 pm

It is about time. They need to sign this guy.
Eli needs someone he can rely on and will not quit on the ball.
In addition to working out with him.
Reese maybe you will wake up and sign him.

Get rid of Carter or make a trade with Detroit for a 4th/5th round pick with Carter.

I believe you’re talking about “Sinorice” Moss, Paul. We only wish we had Santana

I feel good about this move, if it comes about. 3 good receivers + Shockey would really alleviate the pressure on improving the D and the backfield. Turning this team into a throwing offense would only work though if Eli is up to it. Still, having such a great secondary receiver (maybe even primary if he ups his game) could be a tremendous boost.

Frank-thanks for the seeing the wrong name, I obviously know it is Sinorice, just was  rushing to throw something up there.

As for Moss, I think he can be a very solid player, given a full preseason and being involved more in the offense, but I would really like the signing of Curtis. Toomer is getting up their in age and when Toomer went down, the whole team really struggled.

To have another veteran wr who knows how to get open would really give Eli another person he could trust.

Toomer is still a good posession receiver when healthy. He is getting older and has lost a step. Adding Curtis would be huge especially if Toomer recovers from the injury and can still be as productive. I’m still not sold on Moss. Lets see what he does this season.

  10. Dee says:

    March 5th, 2007 at 5:27 pm

Making the G-Men an aerial team and adding a fast, proven veteran receiver would do a lot to boost Eli’s confidence and increase interest in the franchise. It’d also do a lot to relieve pressure on the backfield (no more having to worry about getting the best possible tailback to complement Jacobs) and give the D some breathing room that they lacked down the stretch.

  11. BigBizness says:

    March 5th, 2007 at 5:32 pm

I for one am not at all excited about Curtis’s visit. He is a #3 receiver at best and is going to want #1money. I do agree that the G-Men need help at the WR position. This years draft is loaded with a lot of big, fast and talented WRs. I just think it would be wise to spend our money in a more critical area such as LB, or CB, or even a OL / DL.

Not to mention, the Briggs situation is still up in the air. I would like to wait and see what happens, because everyone will be kicking Resse if Briggs is able to opt out of his contract– and the Giants don’t have the money to bring him to NY.

  12. nick says:

    March 5th, 2007 at 5:34 pm

June is not a very good fit for our D. He is strictly a cover 2 WLB. He is way too small to play OLB in our D. Hes got the size of a large safety.

  13. Dee says:

    March 5th, 2007 at 5:37 pm

ESPN news is reporting that Curtis is in contract talks with the Lions.

  14. Frank E. Kurczewski says:

    March 5th, 2007 at 5:57 pm

I would expect Curtis to sign with his old coach who is now the OC of the Lions. And, I hope the Giants do not accede to his wishes for a $5 million/year salary.

I repeat Amani Toomer does not scare DBs. When was the last time he ran away from a CB for a long gainer? How many years ago?

Toomer has good hands, is great at making the possession retaining first down and is better than average in the end zone. But, he has lost whatever speed he once possessed. I doubt if he is a 4.70-40 guy at his age. He is a hard worker, so he will probably recover from his latest ACL, but will he be as good as he was in 2006? It’s questionable.

Free agent wide receiver Kevin Curtis left Lions headquarters without a deal Monday. He left about 3 p.m. It was unclear where he was headed next.

NFL sources said Curtis fired his agent, Tom Condon.

If a player fires his agent, he can sign with an NFL team on his own. But he must wait five business days to sign with another agent, NFL players association spokesman Carl Francis said.

  18. John says:

    March 5th, 2007 at 6:11 pm

I have to wonder what effect this will have as far as him signing anytime soon?

  19. Paul Perdichizzi says:

    March 5th, 2007 at 6:18 pm

I do not think Curtis will make the visit tonight without an agent. If he fired Condon, he is going to sign a new agent in five days, and I am assuming he would want to have an agent in place before he visits any more teams, but we will have to wait and see.

  20. John says:

    March 5th, 2007 at 6:19 pm

Contrary to reports, Curtis is not believed to be going to New York. When he left Detroit he was on a plane to his home in Salt Lake City.

Curtis flew into Detroit Sunday, and it appeared the two sides were close to a deal, but Condon may have been too busy with the workout of another client - Notre Dame QB Brady Quinn.

This is probably why he fired Condon. Looks like we can forget about Curtis………..

We don’t need a FA WR. This draft has about 15-20 solid WRs. We could pick up a very good WR in rounds 2-4. Anthony Gonzalez, Craig Davis, Steve Smith, Mike Walker.

Munson, it makes perfect sense. Look at the insane money being handed over for CRAP out there. Davis 50 Million!! I am standing up in applause that Reese dosent have us involved in this shit storm. Pretty soon the big money teams will have spent their wads and we’ll be in a great position to pick up some peices to fit our team at a MUCH more realisitic price. Personally I dont give a damn if we dont pick up any big names in this FA. In fact we should be trading off our garbage (carter, webster) for extra picks. This year is just too insane to get into bidding wars.

As far as Curtis is concerned… I feel like we’re duplicating the same type of receiver we have in Moss. The draft will bring us better results in that position. I’m also starting to feel the same way about the RB position. Rhodes would be….nice. Booker, Wolfe, Pittman, Irons… all would be alot more exciting. But exciting is just speculation. I understand why we wold want a vet….however if the price isnt right..fuck it!

  25. bill k says:

    March 5th, 2007 at 6:40 pm

Reese might be looking at a 2 year plan here; what other conclusion can we come to at this point? Not that I want us to go sign a FA to an inflated contract, but I am surprised that nothing is happening w/ the Jints after days of FA… Too many needs, a dwindling pool of FAs, and only the draft to plug the holes…

  26. Billy says:

    March 5th, 2007 at 6:49 pm

Anthony, Curtis is far from Sinorice Moss. Moss is like 3 or 4 inches shorter, and Curtis is proven. Curtis is a legit deepthreat AND he can go up the middle and take a big hit. Do you honestly think Moss can go up the middle and take a hit? That’s why they’re different … Curtis can go deep or over the middle, whereas Moss is only going to be the ‘HR threat’ on the team…nothing more.

And as for that Garrett Wolfe comment, he’s not going to even be drafted because of his injuries/size … the guy is slipping and will be lucky if he gets picked up as a FA.

I’m just hoping we make some moves, but smart 1’s…I don’t want to throw $$ around just for the sake of making a move, I want them to be smart 1’s…good investments…

  27. MunsonLives says:

    I’m with ya Bill K.

Anthony, you made a good point too….I don’t want to pay 5 mil for Curtis, when there are a ton of them in the draft. But at this rate the draft is going to be needed to fill Major holes such as LB, OT, CB, S

I have to say, I am becoming increasingly disapointed on a daily basis. I had assumed the Reese had a plan, but it seems that all he has done to this point, is to destabilize the team by letting go Pettigout, Emmons, and Arrington. If he had something lined up, it would have been great, but now we are left with gaping holes that do not appear to be filled any time soon. I don’t care if they are bad players, anything is better than nothing. What concerns me even more, is that no one seems to want to come to New York, or the Giants office is not being aggresive enough to get anyone here. Either way, it looks like based on personell issues that this could become a dispointing season before it even begins.

  31. bill k says:

    March 5th, 2007 at 6:56 pm

I think that’s the deal: if Reese doesn’t find deals that he thinks are smart, and affordable, he’s not going to pull the trigger. He’ll turn to the draft and continue to build around the younger core members of the team, Osi, Tuck, Kiwi, Eli, Jacobs, etc. It’s a huge change from Accorsi’s work the past few years, which might not be a bad thing. Also, avoid guys over 27 yrs. at positions like RB and LB where the contact adds up quickly.

  32. Mike C says:

    March 5th, 2007 at 6:58 pm

A.J….yeah but the Jets also gave up a 2nd round pick for a 30 year old RB. I think that trade may help the Giants in the long run.

I don’t think Curtis will be worth it because he is going to want alot of money and he is not that great. people say his stats aren’t too good because he plays with holt and bruce but that should only help him get open more and make his stats better.

I would like to see the Giants go after Stallworth instead.

I really hope Hood signs with the Giants, he can help the secondary but I don’t think the Giants have a number 1 corner and he won’t fill that role but hopefully someone steps up and takes that spot.

One thing Accorsi did was TRY and make the team better.

He may not have always made the right move (ie. Eli trade & Arrington) but he was progressive.

Reese cut wood, but now, without FA pickups to fill some of these needs, the draft is SOOOOOOOOO impoortant, and it’s his first one as GM.

    Oh Well.

  37. Paul Perdichizzi says:

    March 5th, 2007 at 7:05 pm

I think it is actually a very good trade for both teams. The Jets needed a starting running back and got one for trading the 37th pick for Jones and the 63rd pick.

The Bears got back pretty decent value. Most likely his value was a third round pick but since they threw in their 2nd rounder they were able to get a low 2nd pick. They now have two picks in the first 37 picks to add to a team that just went to the super bowl. In addtion, they wanted Benson to become their starter anyway, so it was not like they were trade away a player they had in their plans for next year.

The trade by the Bears could impact the Giants in other ways.

Thomas Jones, who’s represented by Rosenhaus, wants a big contract.
With Thomas Jones gone, they could use the money that they would have given to Thomas Jones elsewhere.
One of the players that could benefit from this is Lance Briggs.
The possibilty and the ability for the Bears to sign Briggs to a huge contract has increased dramatically.

  44. Kyle says:

I’d love to swing a deal for Lance Briggs, as he can most likely be had by sending Chicago a 1st and 5th (or a 4th next year). Except there is one major sticking point: he has no contract. Adalius Thomas, an inferior and older player, got himself $35 million over 5 years with half the deal guaranteed. Lance Briggs will command $20 million guaranteed and most likely a contract upwards of $55-60 million dollars.

Anyone willing to pay him that?

  45. Peter says:

    March 5th, 2007 at 7:24 pm

MunsonLives, I’m a huge Giants fan.

I’m just saying that the Thomas Jones trade could impact the Giants more than they’ve anticipated.

Also, I don’t think it’s a coincidence that the Bears traded Jones hours after Lance Briggs said that he wanted to be traded unless the Bears give him a huge deal.
The Bear could now give Briggs a more enticing deal.

I for one am glad the Giants are being patient. I can’t believe the contracts that are being given to underachieving, and mediocre O-linemen, and #3 WR’s. It’s crazy. The two best free agents were Thomas and Clements, and the 49ers went way overboard on that contract. There isn’t a player out there worth 5 mil a year. Everyone wants Reese to do something. The only thing I want him to do is not sign someone for the sake of doing something. Hood would be nice because of his knowledge of Spag’s, but everyone else are more or less depth guys. I wouldn’t mind signing Rhodes, Hood, and a LB, but at reasonable contracts though.

I love the way everyone says to trade a #2 and Webster/Carter for Briggs. If those players are as bad as everyone thinks they are, why would the Bears want them?

If O’Hara hit the market he could have gotten one of the riduculous 7 yrs 49 mil contracts. But seriously, look how much the Vikes wasted on Shiancoe. That shows how crazy this free agency period has been considering Shiancoe has done nothing in his career.

No way do we want Antonio Bryant.

San Francisco structured Bryant’s contract so that they would take a minimal cap hit if they decided to cut bait quickly. His suspension sealed his time as a 49er. Talented yet inconsistent, Bryant will come at a bargain this offseason. He’s now been dumped by three teams in as many years and is suspended for the first two games of 2007. The 49ers have a gigantic hole at receiver and will surely sign one of the top wideouts available.

I loved Bryant in college, back then he still complained but he always played his guts out, blocked on running plays and always ran his routes hard even when ball was not coming his way. Sure, he bi*tched and moaned about not getting ball enough on sideline but didn’t let it effect his play. More then I can say for Burress who quits when ball is not going is way and sometimes even when it is.

AJ- I can’t wait to see Dixon get some legitmate talent like a McDonald All-American because he and Howland have turned program around with guys that wouldn’t even make most other Division One teams.

  74. John says:

    March 5th, 2007 at 8:20 pm

Tony C.- Based on talent alone, he is a really good receiver, but as A.J. said he’s a headcase. For that reason I wouldn’t want him on our team. The paragraph I pasted was a write up on rotoworld.

It would seem the Giants are playing everything close to the vest and going about thier business quietly. I’m sure they are talking to players, and trying to get players to come in but when other teams are throwing around big dollars…

I say let the other teams spend all thier money on one or two players then have players come in. Contract demands will be more realistic then, and maybe we can 3-4 players. It’s not as if there was a bunch of pro bowlers out there this year. As of now its basically part time players or players on the wrong side of 30…

  76. A.J. says:

    March 5th, 2007 at 8:22 pm

No doubt Dixon has turned the program around.

Anyone hearing anything about Rhodes now that the RB market has been pretty much set? It doesn’t sound like he’s visiting anyone else either.

  77. JOHN T says:

    March 5th, 2007 at 8:31 pm

Wherever Antonio Bryant signs he still has to serve the 4 game suspension, so forget him

  78. John says:

    March 5th, 2007 at 8:38 pm

Its amazing…….. With all the problems we had on defense last season, and so far its the offense that has gotten so much attention. One RB visited and left without a contract, got blown off by a fat lazy OT, had multi trade scenarios involving RB’s, and had a WR fire his agent prior to visiting. Not what I expected so far……. Any updates on Rod Hood?

  79. George Vreeland Hill says:

    March 5th, 2007 at 8:47 pm

I would look at Joe Horn for a year.
He can still play, and would be a better addition than Curtis.

  80. Billy says:

Horn is old, injury prone, wants a lot of $$, and is an asshole. Notice how well the Saints did when he didn’t play for them ;)

Anyone know if Kawika Mitchell is making any visits??? I ahvent heard his name once and would love him in blue.

  82. Ara says:

    March 5th, 2007 at 8:54 pm

Im not in any rush to sign players…thats basiclly for excitment, I’ll wait it out. BUT whats going on here? Everytime I watch espn I hear someone traded someone or someone signed with so and so. Nothing about the Giants and thats a lil scary. We have so many holes to fill and how many starters can you possibly find in the draft, if ur lucky 3? I hope Reese has some sort of plan.

Its Getting to the point now that we have to make some kind of moves, we cant expect to be able to build through the draft , and we cant expect to compete with HUGE holes every where . All i ask is WHat ARe The Giants Thinking ?

  89. E-DOG says:

I THINK JERRY REESE IS PLANNING SOMETHING BIG. EITHER HE IS GOING TO GET BRIGGS OR HE’S GOING TO TRADE UP IN THE DRAFT REALLY HIGH.

Just curious “BigNICK”, do you go to school or work or do anything productive all day, or do you wait for opportunities to heckle us…

C’mon guys and grow up…Big Nick, go somewhere else and stop wasting my time with your crap. along with a lot of others, im tryin to be patient but this is killin me. are we goin to address any of our Needs?! even though i hated hearing “false start number 77″, he was solid. we arent even talking to a T are we. and now im hearing Porter talking to Dallas….can you imagine Ware and Porter as the LBs over there. its crazy. who cares about curtis….we can get a WR in the 2nd round.

  106. JOHN T says:

    March 5th, 2007 at 10:09 pm

Terrance, Do you think Curtis will still come in for the visit?

  107. Terrence T says:

    March 5th, 2007 at 10:09 pm

if we had EA, we woulda had Briggs and Porter already along with a RB and money for the draft. we woulda been talking about how great this D can be and where it stands with the great 86 Giants

  108. JOHN T says:

    March 5th, 2007 at 10:10 pm

TERRANCE, WHo would you rather have porter or Briggs?

  109. Terrence T says:

    March 5th, 2007 at 10:12 pm

John T, right now its hard to say since he fired his agent and it looks like his heart is set on Detroit. we are just going to have to wait and see buddy

  110. JOHN T says:

    March 5th, 2007 at 10:13 pm

Dolphins GM Randy Mueller and coach Cam Cameron flew to free agent Joey Porter’s home Monday to court the former Pro Bowl linebacker.
It appears they’re serious about bringing him in the building. Porter would fit nicely in Miami, where he’d replace Donnie Spragan. The Miami Herald reports Donte’ Stallworth is scheduled to meet ‘Fins brass on Thursday……….. Well I would rather see him in miami instead of dallas!!!

I broke this story 1st, Im also RobiCano24. I should get all credit. J/p but I did break it.

  114. gianthinker says:

    March 5th, 2007 at 11:25 pm

If we could sign Curtis that would be huge. I cant see us spending more than the Vikings and the Lions but maybe we can sign him relatively cheap. I doubt it though.

To bad about Brad Johnson. I would have loved to have him as our #2. He definately has a better shot at starting there though incase Romo decides to suck this year. Who knows?
