Giants 101

On The Eve of the Draft

Who will the New York Giants be at day’s end tomorrow? It’s less than 24 hours until the first pick and you can almost feel the anxiety racing through the bodies of the prospects, coaches, GMs and owners.

A quick introduction: my name is Sean Carroll. I’m a new writer for G101 and couldn’t be happier to have been brought on board…not to mention during one of the most exciting times in football. It likely goes without saying that I’m a diehard Giants fan and basically bleed blue. I grew up about a half-hour from Giants Stadium. From the time I was old enough to understand what a television was, my father taught me everything there is to know about the G-Men. As we all know, there have been some great times and some horribly heartbreaking times – but it all comes with territory when you’re a Giants fan. So anyway, I look forward to sharing some of my thoughts with you all and hearing some of your feedback as well. Be gentle.

In other news…let’s talk draft! The other guys here at G101 have done a very fine job at outlining just about all there is to know about the 2007 Draft Class, so in lieu of my breakdown, I’ll simply provide you all with my picks (or hopes as some may believe) for the first three rounds.

1st Round – Paul Posluszny (LB – Penn State): The guy has been talked about more than just about anyone, especially on G101 and other Big Blue sites. Since it appears Briggs and Wilson are out of the question, this would be a major coup for the Giants if Posluszny fell to #20.

2nd Round – Brandon Meriweather (CB/S – Univ. of Miami): Okay, so the guy has some off-field concerns, but he’s got a lot to offer…especially to a hurting Giants backfield. Speed is the name of the game with Meriweather, not to mention some serious versatility. With some fine-tuning and the mentoring of some of the veteran players, I think Meriweather would be a welcomed addition to the team.

3rd Round – Brandon Frye (OT – Virginia Tech): You may all think I’m crazy to pick an OT for the third round, but truth be told, I have some faith in Diehl. I think Diehl will adapt to the OT position well, leaving room to mold Frye into a starter in the coming year. Frye is an athletic kid with a lot of explosiveness off the line and good upside. In my opinion, his pros outweigh the cons.

So that’s it. We’ll see how tomorrow goes…and with Reese at the helm, you never know.

if we decide to pick posluszny, i will be extatic (probably spelled it wrong). I think he is just what we need on defense: Hard working, good attitude, sure tackler. If not Posluszny, i just hope we stick with defense in round 1.

Welcome aboard Sean. Good stuff. I’d settle for Poslusny and Merriwether tomorrow without a doubt

Glad to have you, Sean. I was thinking that I wouldn’t mind seeing them trade down to get another second rounder. If they did trade down, I’d like to see them get Chris Houston out of Arkansas.

I’ve been reading a lot of “experts” saying they think the Giants may trade down for an extra 2nd rounder, but I’m skeptical. I think we need to go in determined and pick up who we need. Last year we tried something similar and got Moss…(yeah, we got Kiwi which is working out just fine), but we need to gun for what we need. Too many holes to mess around, in my opinion.

Thanks for the welcome by the way.

I would like the Poz pick but it would hardly be a “coup”. 95% of mock drafts have him available at our spot and most have him drafted later.

Very little chance Merriweather is available. I’ve heard first round mentioned lately with him.

In a realistic, salary-cap constrained, needs based, rational world, I would love to see the Giants get Ted Ginn and Jon Beason. The answer to our return woes, a potential big game threat to eventually replace Amani down the road, and the best athlete in the draft at LB. Any chance of this happening?

I realize that both of these players are possibly 1st round talent, but, I consider our #1 at the 20th more valuable than our #1 last year, so I feel we may be able to move down in the first round and up in the second like last year, maybe a little easier, and we could possibly land these two. Probably wishful thinking, but it would make me very happy, and it’s somewhat realistic in my eyes.

    Thoughts?

Hate Poz, love Meriweather, but doubt hes there, Frye has unique tangibles, but never put it together, I’d rather not go with another project at LT, since we already have one

i dont think meriweather wiil be there in the 2nd

  9. Sean Carroll says:

    April 27th, 2007 at 9:24 pm

I see your points, and Beason would be just fine I suppose. But I have to say that I’m fairly hesitant to pick up a WR in the first two rounds. Yes it would be nice, but why did we get Moss last year? We should put some more resources into making him a stud and then keep our eyes peeled for any FA moves to fill in for Toomer down the road.

Toomer is a beast. Played with serious burns on his legs in the 2000 SB and didn’t even notice when he tore his ACL last year. (Knock on wood) He’ll be just as solid this year as he’s ever been.

So I’m fine with Beason, but Ginn I just can’t get on board with…nor Jarrett.

    —–

As for Poz…the reason I say it would be a coup is because he’s been movin on up for the last few weeks. This year has nearly become the “year of the LB.” Don’t be surprised to see him go earlier.

I love the first pick of Poz. The second pick with Merriweather may sound far fetched, but with the NFL’s new conduct policy along with his past incidents it could hurt his stock and cause him to fall. If he dosen’t fall to us in the second I’m almost sure the other CB/S Wright(I can’t recall the school) will be their in the second. He too is a talented 1st round caliber player who’s past conduct is going to cost him some money tommorow.

  11. Joe says:

    April 27th, 2007 at 9:31 pm

    Sean,

I am the last person to show Amani the door. And I wouldn’t take Ginn to take his place right now. But you would make a pick like that to develop in the future.

As far as Moss, who cares if we got him last year, it’s in the past. He may turn out great, he may turn out so-so, he may bomb. But Ginn is a gamebreaker, and if he’s available, you can’t make an argument that he would be a detriment to have on the roster. On the same note, you can’t expect to replace Amani with a rookie the year after he retires, his replacement needs to come from someone who has had development.

Look at the Lions; they are facing the possiblity of drafting with Calvin Johnson on the board. History dictates they’d be crazy, but, kid is the truth. Their team would absolutely be better with him.

The Texans are possibly gonna take Gaines Adams, when they blew the draft last year on a DE. The past is the past, and you always take a good player if available. Ginn is good. If he’s there, and we think we could get Beason, I think we would all look back and recall this as the first year in some time the general manager of the Giants had a good draft.

In spite of my burning hatred for all things “mock draft”, as I have repeatedly stated it is a fun yet foolish thing to do to pass time in between the Super Bowl and the NFL Draft…

    I like this one!

Granted I extremely dislike Paul Posluszny, viewing him as a slow LB (slow as in game speed, not just 40 times) with a horrid injury history already in his career, I like going LB with the first round, then picking up Brandon Meriweather in the 2nd and an offensive tackle in the 3rd.

This is what I want to happen…

1st Round - Trade down with New Orleans, Denver or New York. Pick up whatever picks can be squeezed out of the trading partner. Move down and select Jon Beason, LB - Miami.

2nd Round - Trade up, like last year, using the extra picks given to us in the first round trade to make a move up the board more palatable. Move up and select Brandon Merriweather, S - Miami. I do not believe he will survive till the 52nd pick, and that sacrificing two 4ths or what have you to land him is fine.

3rd Round - Stay put, select the best available player, preferably a WR or OT, but whomever grades out the highest.

I still profess an 80/20 BPA/Need draft, I am just assuming that the Giants front office is as high on Jon Beason and Brandon Meriweather - both Miami products, so you know they come with an arrogant, nasty streak - as I am.

Then again, if Reggie Nelson or Dwayne Jarrett survive until 20, we better see Reese pick one of them.

  16. Boogie says:

    April 27th, 2007 at 9:45 pm

Not smart when you can trade down grab Meriweather add an extra pick and scoop a better linebacker in the second or third. If you stay at 20 Poz isnt worth it.

please tell me this is a joke… a late april fools joke… the giants would kill this draft taking Poz… he is not fast and not big enough to play for us… He wont be a stud and the giants biggest weakness on defense is speed and athletic linebackers… poz is no different then chase blackburn…. i dont see poz ever covering any tight end or slot receiver or any running back.. the guy is a just a blue collar 3-4th rounder to me… Meriweather will not be there in round 2 for us… The Giants need attitude on defense and Beason is that player… Stop with the slow blue collar Poz… No need for a stiff like that

  19. Joe says:

Shoot me in the face if we take the Penn State kid.

  20. Travis says:

    April 27th, 2007 at 9:56 pm

I think it is funny how so many of us feel so differently about the LB position. It’s either Pos, or Timmons. And in all reality, we will probably pick neither. There is no telling where Big Blue will go this year. None of us saw us picking Kiwanuka, even after the trade back. We still thought we would go in another direction. Kiwi was not even in our sights.

Sucks that we will have to wait 2 or more hours before we get to pick though.

  21. Fitz says:

    April 27th, 2007 at 10:00 pm

You guys keep saying Poz is slow but didnt he run in the 4.5’s in the 40 thats not slow for a linebacker if you ask me.Im still Picking Jarrett but I dont think Poz is as slow or bad as some of you guys think ..Their is no way we trade up or down for Merriweather..

  22. Travis says:

    April 27th, 2007 at 10:02 pm

I like posluszny, but i would not be dissapointed with Timmons either.

Players I will not be upset with us taking:
    Timmons
    Posluszny
    Staley
    Meriweather

If we trade down I like:
    Houston
    Bowe
    Jarrett
    Branch

I can see us not taking any of those players though. I swear we seem to pick a surprise every year

  23. Kyle says:

    April 27th, 2007 at 10:05 pm

    HALLELUJAH!

So glad I am not alone on this website in my disdain for all things Paul Posluszny. He is a very good - not great - college player who projects to a mediocre NFL player. He lacks speed, and that is evident in game tape. He is not a sideline to sideline player. He is not strong enough at the point of attack to where I feel confident in his ability to break some blocks - not all, but the amount that a solid LB should . The two problems compound one another, as his lack of speed means he will have to engage blockers more often, as he cannot get by them with his quickness, and if he is not great in shedding blocks… it gets ugly fast here, fellas.

Tackle counts are not the only sign of a productive LB, and I feel that Jon Beason (and Lawrence Timmons, as he is my #3 behind Willis and Beason) present a pro football team with much more options than Posluszny does. We need athletes at the OLB spot, G101 writers. Emmons was a sure tackler, but he was slow and weak, meaning he could never get himself in position to make the tackle. When was the last time we had an aggressive OLB who could effectively blitz, either getting the sack, disrupting the throw, or drawing blockers away from our DEs?

    Mike Barrow.

Yeah, we need some help here.

  24. Kyle says:

    April 27th, 2007 at 10:07 pm

    Fitz:
40 times, in my (humble and unqualified) opinion, mean jack. Posluszny, in the games of Penn State I saw this year, demonstrated some decent speed for a college LB, but did not look nearly fast enough to be as productive an OLB as the first round should provide. That is the big argument I think everyone has here. Sure, if he is in the 2nd round, draft him; however he is not worth a first round selection.

  25. Kyle says:

    April 27th, 2007 at 10:08 pm

Triple posts are obnoxious and I do apologize, but I mean to say 3rd round, not 2nd.

  26. Travis says:

    April 27th, 2007 at 10:09 pm

how many people here actually expect the giants to take a LB? They never draft what we expect

  27. Dan X says:

    April 27th, 2007 at 10:14 pm

I have 3 players at 20 I would take Beason,Hall,Staley, any of them at 20 would be greeat. I like the idea of trading down to 23-25 and getting extra picks and taking Timmons,or Meriweather they would fit in nice with our system.

  28. Boogie says:

and please stop with the trading down… the giants are not going to trade down when there will be good players at 20 that they wont get by trading down…

    Here is what we need:

Round 1 has to be one of these 3 players

    1. Jon Beason…I am a die hard Canes fan and he is the type of player that can be a defensive captain one day ala Armstead.. He is not a big guy but he is fast and he hits like a truck.. A sure tackler which we dont have… He and Pierce will form a nice 1-2 for the giants for years to come and he plays with attitude….

    2. Aaron Ross… I like him a lot.. he is a ball hawk with great speed and great coverage skills.. The only downside to him is that he is 25 years old already for a rookie… But he can also return kicks which he did in college and was good at it

    3. Dwayne Jarett. People say that he is not that fast.. well neither was Toomer and neither is Keyshawn but Jarrett is 6″5 and with Plax at 6″5 we will pose problems for any secondary and the fact that he never drops passes makes him Eli’s new blanket….

  31. Travis says:

    April 27th, 2007 at 10:25 pm

We need players that are disciplined as well, not just aggressive head-hunters. I would be happy with either Timmons or Posluszny though.

Adam Schefter from NFL Network is reporting that talks of trading Briggs to the Redskins are alive again but he thinks the deal won’t happen because the Bears would want to trade out of the 6th spot and they can’t find anyone who wats to trade up.

  34. Dan Murphy says:

    April 27th, 2007 at 10:57 pm

    Sean,

Welcome to G101. I am a former writer here and it’s good to see these new additions during the past couple of months.

As far as your mock: I love Puz but Meriweather is a different story. I would love to have his services in the backfield. However, I have him going to the Patriots at either the 24 or 28 spot. Since we have the 51st pick in the second, he will be longggg gone for sure. In the second I would either love to take McCauley out of Fresno State or Leonard out of Rutgers.

    Once again, welcome aboard!

  35. gianthinker says:

    April 27th, 2007 at 11:12 pm

Sean-As a loyal MVNer I welcome you. I just hope bringing in additional guys doesnt give Dan the idea of leaving again. Stay Dan. You make Giants 101. Anyway, welcome Sean. And I doubt Meriweather can be had in the second round without trading up but I hope it happens either way because I’m very high on that kid.

  36. Sean says:

    April 27th, 2007 at 11:54 pm

    welcome to the site Sean,

I dont know about your choices right now, but that is my opinion. Anyways, we’ll find out tommorrow what really happens.

As for me, if i was GM, id love to do this
    Round 1 - Joe Staley
    Round 2 - Michael Griffin/Brandon Merriweather
    Round 3 - Michael Bush
    Round 4 - Scott Chandler
    Round 5 - Antwane Barnes
Round 6 - Jordan Kent -great size w/ OK speed=great potential
Round 7 - Walter Thomas -potential is limitless

What do you think about that draft? and do you think those players would be there?

  37. Steve says:

    April 27th, 2007 at 11:58 pm

    Sean,

Now that’s a nice draft. It makes good football sense and fills glaring needs. Your draft certainly adds credibility to this site as opposed to Syvertsen Playstation draft.

    Thanks

  38. Sean Carroll says:

    April 28th, 2007 at 12:40 am

Thanks again for all the welcomes. I knew that putting Meriweather in the 2nd was a stretch, but I do see him slipping due to his off-field “issues.”

Regardless, while it seems that a LB is the likely Round 1 candidate (sping the wheel and see who comes up), as long as we land a defensive back as well (preferably in 2), I’ll be a happy camper. When was the last time the Giants had a true shut-down back? Too long.

  39. Troy says:

    April 28th, 2007 at 12:44 am

Sean, your draft is completely unrealistic. Michael Griffin and Brandon Meriweather will be gone in the first and Michael Bush will be gone in the top of the 2nd.

  40. Sean Carroll says:

    April 28th, 2007 at 12:57 am

Troy, they were simply opinions. I appreciate yours as well. We’ll see what happens tomorrow, everyone. Let’s see what Reese has in store for us.

  41. Sean says:

    April 28th, 2007 at 1:32 am

    Troy,
    1. Thats just something i’d like
    2. It would be easy for either of those players to fall in the draft. There are a few teams that may be looking to draft a saftey but they decide to draft a different position/person with their picks and they easily drop. Late 1st/early 2nd potential players fall all the time and well see in a few hours. Also i know bush probably wont fall to our pick in the 3rd but i think he will fall to the 3rd round and i dont think he goes in the top of the 2nd (not a chance) but we’ll see how these first few pics play out soon enough.

  42. Frank E. Kurczewski says:

  45. Mr. Pinto says:

    April 28th, 2007 at 7:52 am

Frank, you’re just so bitter. And Sean, welcome to the site.

You mentioned early on in these comments that Poz could go BEFORE we even pick. That’s like a dream to me. Because that means somebody has got to drop. Like others, I doubt Meriweather is going to make it to our 2nd round pick. Trading down in the first is probably the right idea, especially with our targets (like Beason, who will probably stick around that long). Big day.

  46. Tom says:

    April 28th, 2007 at 11:24 am

I’d be very happy with this.

I’d also like Beason or Timmons at #1, but would be happy w/Poz.

If Merriweather is there in round two - take him!
