Pete Prisco: Strahan is a Hall of Fame Lock

First of all, allow me to apologize for no update yesterday. That is the first time in over a year (I believe) that G101 went without an update. I was without power/internet for a few days and just got it back yesterday. Unfortunately, I decided to take an additional day off and because of that G101 was dead. Anyway, let’s get this thing back on track.

Is Michael Strahan a surefire Hall of Famer? Pete Prisco of CBS Sportsline thinks so.

Mike Strahan, DE, New York Giants
Decision: Welcome to Canton.
He’s been a dominant player for a long time, but is he in the Bruce Smith-Reggie White class? He’s not, but he’s the all-time sack leader. Plus, the media likes him. He’ll get in.

While I do agree that Strahan is Hall of Fame bound, there are a few problems with Prisco’s analysis. Can anyone guess what they are?

First of all, Michael Strahan is not the all time sacks leader. Yes, he does hold the single-season record, but the all-time record? Not even close! Come on Pete, you get paid for this stuff!

Secondly, since when does the media liking a player get put on their Hall of Fame resume? I understand that some media members have to vote for them, but that should be the very last thing people consider when voting for (or against) a player.

The reality is, Strahan is going to the Hall of Fame because he’s been a dominant player throughout his career. There weren’t a few good years that stood out above the rest; he’s been consistently dominant since (almost) day one. And if he can stay healthy this year, I still think he has something left in the tank. I honestly do not believe he’s done writing that Hall of Fame resume just yet.

Notes and Quotes:

Osi Umenyiora on Eli Manning -

“He’s the quarterback. I’m not going to say he’s the leader of the team, but he’s the quarterback. We follow him and as he goes that’s how far we’re going to go,” Umenyiora said.

Eli Manning on the 2007 Giants -

“We had a great mini-camp, great energy, great enthusiasm among the players. Guys are excited about the season. We’ve been working hard and looking forward to training camp, and seeing how good we can be this year…We’re on the right steps and doing the right things to becoming a good team. It’s just a matter of putting everything together and playing consistently the whole year,” Manning said.

- A bit of non-Giants news: There seem to be some rumors [still] floating around that Larry Johnson may be traded to the Dallas Cowboys.

Dan, you run a great forum here. No one will fault you for taking a day off.

I have only been around this board for a few months but have enjoyed the banter. I am curious about how you and the other writers here got the site started. Maybe you could do a story about that some time.

I hope that Larry Johnson doesn’t go to the Cowboys. That would make them a lot tougher to beat.

I really like Eli as our quarterback….but is it just me, or does it seem like everytime he’s quoted, he’s saying the same things……”uhh, we’re on the right track, and uhhh we just have to play consistent the whole season, uhhh”…… It kinda makes me laugh
But on second thought…what else is he gonna say, right?

Not exactly a ringing endorsement by Osi is it?
I’m still on the fence with Eli but this is his make or break season and I’m pulling for him! Dan keep up the great work and EVERYONE deserve a day off.

Pete Prisco..wow, you’d think he’d write something that didn’t sound like he pulled it out of his own ass. That article was just horrible.

If anyone’s looking for a guy who can pull stuff out of his ass and put it on paper, let me know…cus if that guy can get $$ for doing it, so can I!

TonyB- I agree 100% about Eli…I wish he would grow a pair and say..”yeah this is my team now that tiki is gone and I will lead”….I know this is not in his “personality” to do so but when I really think about it…that is what the a leader of a group of grown men needs to be…If he was truely a leader of the team Osi’s comment would have sounded a lot different…I saw that interview on NFL network and it sounded even worse when he said it then when it was in print. With that said Eli is what we have and I support him as our quaterback and hope he finally “gets it” this season. Go big blue!

When Y.A. Tittle quartebacked the Giants in the early sixties it wasn’t uncommen for him to get right in the face of a lineman who missed a block. One time he even threw his helmet at a guard while sitting on his ass after a particularly bad sack.

As competitive everyone in Eli’s family is you’d think he would have more of an attitude, but hey, everyone is different all we want are results. How he gets them is his business.

He does need to do it this year though….

Strahan’s first round choice to the hall of fame is a no-brainer.

LJ is toast, hes 28, and he is being OVERWORKED IN KC. 400 carries owch.

Doesn’t Dallas already have 2 good RBs in Julius Jones & Marion Barber III? I know each of them will be a free agent next year, but wouldn’t it be smarter to see what a guy like Barber could do & try to keep him, since LJ is so expensive?

LJ is going to find himself without a job if he keeps complaining about $$ the way he is. He’s good, but he’s not Tomlinson good, and I believe Tomlinson has a very reasonable contract.

I don’t think LJ is finished. The guy has been great the last couple of years. Why would KC look to dump him? Is it because he is too vocal. I don’t want to see him on Dallas.
Strahan does belong in the Hall of Fame. I think Tiki belongs there too.

If Eli is going to step up, he has to throw more accurate passes and he also has to become more emotional. He can’t just stand around on the sidelines looking like a deer in hedlights. Somebody light a fire under his ass. This should be his breakout year.

  16. Billy says:

    July 1st, 2007 at 2:47 pm

Kevros - LJ is a great RB, but he’s already in his late 20’s, has a ton of mileage on his legs. Not to mention he wants a ton of $$.

So is any team really going to throw around $60-80mil for a longterm deal, with a guy who’s getting older & has been a work horse (and possibly overworked) the last few years. I just don’t see how many teams would have room for that kind of risk, especially when now a taem like Dallas is rumored as a suiter…when they already have some good, young RBs themselves.

Eli is Eli. He is what he is. I dont get upset because he doesnt remind me of some other fiery leaders who are great speakers and motivators and who can get tough and get in someones face and kick thier ass back in line when they need it. I know most people will argue, “well he’s the qb he needs to step up and be that leader, it comes with the territory, bla bla bla”, but I say, just because he’s the qb doesnt mean he is automatically that kind of person. He is what he is. Dont get mad about it, just accept it and cheer on your team. Its a delicate, touchy feely world these day, its not easy to lead men. especially all those egos in the locker room. He’s a different person but we can still be successful with Eli at the helm. Shockey, some of those O-linmean, Toomer, Even jacobs have enough fire between them to rally the troops and get into guys and make them realize they need to dig deep and step up hard. Eli doesnt ABSOLUTELY NEED TO DO THAT in order for them to be successful. Dont believe all the dam negative new york media hype.

dallas would be a much tougher offensive team with LJ. I hope that doesnt happen. i dont wanna play him twice a year and possibly in the playoffs. It would be interesting to see jacobs and grandmama in a head-to-head though, but not twice a year.

I think Tiki should’ve continued to play if he wanted to make a hall of fame run. Honestly, i dont think that was very important to him. I guess his book will tell us what he really thinks. Strahan will make it. First ballot? no superbowls, he’ll make it though.

Pete Prisco is a piece of crap. The proof is this article I read some time ago:

    http://cbs.sportsline.com/nfl/story/9447715

If you go down to the “Around the League” section, he bashes Doug Flutie (who never hurt anyone, and has done so much for charity throughout his career), then 3 bulletpoints later, praises Jimmy Smith, and acknowledges his drug use!

Ever since I read that article, I refuse to acknowledge this clown as a writer, so Dan, with all due respect, I won’t be reading the article you linked to :)

And don’t worry about taking a day off, worry about getting your power back buddy.

The Cowboys will need a new RB because Julius Jones is a free agent at the end of this year and it seems like the Cowboys want to go in a new direction.

Remember the trade with Cleveland during this year’s NFL Draft?
Jerry Jones has on eye on Darren McFadden, RB for Arkansas. This guy is the real deal. Not only is he a heck of a runner, but he can catch and also play QB. He’s a triple threat and it makes me cringe to think that he may be wearing a Cowboys jersey.
Giants fans have to hope that the Browns do well and/or McFadden doesn’t declare for the draft. (He’s a junior, but he’ll most likely come out.)

tiki barber does nto belong in the hallfo f fame, he belongs in the hall of Quitters and primo donnas.

    LJ will burn out

  21. tom c. says:

    July 1st, 2007 at 6:36 pm

kerry….I agree that a lot of backs don’t produce as well after they are traded. But LJ is pretty damn good and I think he could make an immediate difference with the Cowboys.

As for Tiki and the hall of fame, the honor is presented for his talents on the field. He said some things he shouldn’t have said but he is still the league’s tenth all time rusher and considering his last three years it’s hard to argue that he doesn’t belong.

  22. Kevros says:

    July 1st, 2007 at 8:02 pm

Billy - I’m not saying they necessarily will give him that kind of contract. Just that he will be playing next year. He’s trying to get a huge contract. I don’t think he is actually willing to miss the season for it. If he doesn’t play this year he will geta crappy contract next year. KC knows that and thats why they are waiting for him to come down a bit with his demands.

    He will play this year…

“F” Jerry Jones. He can go get LJ.

    We got LJ’s number.

It’s #55. His name is Kawika Mitchell. He might know a thing or 2 about LJ. They were on the same team for some time. Remember?

    Not scared, Mr. Jones.

Hey guys, I just read this. —->

This is someone named VTdogger on Jesse Allen / VT Fullback

This kid was just put on waivers from the NY Jets. He was with them for 6 weeks but they never practiced “full” so they never have seen what he really does to linebackers. Believe me, he is a perfect fit for the Giant running game.
6′0″ and 255 lbs, 4.6/40…400 Lb. Power Clean.
Ive watched him from walk-on to red zone specialist as his career evolved at VT (my home) and he is the real deal if the Giants want a sloppy faced, old style lead blocker. He delivered awesome slobber knockers in Blacksburg for 5 years. He is a gentleman and a great kid to boot. Just thought I would let ya know he is available for now.

This is someone named FBguru on Jesse Allen / VT Fullback

Jesse Allen from the New York Jets….is available. He was waived from the Jets on 6/14 and is on the market. He is probably the strongest and most explosive fullback available. Allen was VT’s goal line guy with a very aggressive blocking style. Im very surprised they let him go with Thomas Jones in NY.

What do you guys think about Jesse Allen?

You can go here and read a Bio if you’d like. —->

The Giants held onto Strahan and Toomer too long. They are both long in the tooth, injury prone and in decline. Dallas is sitting with 13.8 mil and Phila with 11.5 mil in cap space while the Giants are cap-strapped because of these two over-the-hill guys. They and Eli’s ineptitude are the reasons the Giants are going nowhere this season.

  27. Bryan says:

    July 2nd, 2007 at 8:35 am

Gianthinker - sounds like he has trouble changing direction, especially in open space (you know, where LB tend to be). At teh same time, he seems to somtimes bend at the waist in space, lose balance and fall off his blocks.

While young guys get cut all the time who end up making it in the NFL, it usually not for a couple years. I have to think there is a reason the Jets cut him and that if he amounts to anything, it won’t be this year. He’s not the solution to the FB issue, in my mind.

  28. Kevros says:

    July 2nd, 2007 at 9:09 am

Allen sounds better than Douglas. But I don’t really know since I have never seen either of them play. I don’t think it would hurt to add him and let him compete for the spot. But for some reason I don’t think the Giants will…
