Giants 101

Giants’ Manning Doesn’t Think Injury is Serious

With all the varying reports on Eli Manning’s shoulder injury, it’s hard to tell what’s up and what’s down. One report says the whole season, one says a month, and another says day-to-day.

Obviously, the Giants could be playing a PR game regarding Manning’s injury, but I’ll back on the fact that NFL Network and ESPN are wrong. If Manning were severely injured, I don’t think the Giants would have covered it up. Not to mention, Manning, himself, doesn’t seem overly concerned.

“It’s sore right now, that’s about all there is to it,” said Manning. “The day after you get hit on it, it’s just going to be a little sore and a little tight. But overall I’m not in pain or am not hurting in any way. So it is just a matter of when I can throw the ball, I’ll be out there throwing it. It’s just going to be day-by-day. I think with (Monday) off and (Tuesday) off, hopefully these are probably the worst two days of it. I’ll be getting better and treatment and get iced. I’ll take anything I can to try to get healed up as quickly as possible. They said that everything is probably as good as could be from the tests results. It is just a matter of when you have the strength and when you feel you can throw full strength and you will be out there playing…It’s all a matter of how I feel. I hope I feel better (on Tuesday). And by Wednesday just see how the arm feels; just take some test throws. Whether I do some stuff or – it’s just all a matter of how I feel and when I am ready to throw.”

Unfortunately, the same journalistic insanity surrounds defensive end Osi Umenyiora. There are about five different reports all saying something different. So, again, I’ll have to trust the Giants on this one.

“It is a soreness situation right now and that is where it will remain until something further comes along,” Coughlin said. “We expect again that he will be evaluated every day and if he responds to the treatment we will see how it goes and if he doesn’t, if he remains sore and what have you, then we will have to deal with that as well.”

And finally, the Giants have hinted that Brandon Jacobs’ injury may not be as severe as Newsday made it sounds. While they have him missing 3-5 weeks, the Giants said he will be evaluated on a week-by-week basis.

In all likelihood, he will miss New York’s home opener this weekend against the Packers, but beyond that, it’s anybodies guess.

Notes:

- The Giants have signed defensive lineman Russell Davis.

- Defensive tackle Barry Cofield suffered a hyperextended knee, but is expected to play this weekend.

- There is no update on Kevin Dockery.

This is the perfect storm I was worried about. Early setbacks could put the team right into the tank. Morale is fragile… very fragile.

I dont think eli would have made that throw after the injury if it was really a bad injury.

Also, is anyone tired of OSI getting injured every season. Move KIWI back to DE. I want to see Blackburn in there, I thought he did a good job last time he was playing. Good Tackler.

Does anyone else think that since the Giants signed a DT, they’re planning on moving William Joesph to backup DE, and keeping Kiwi at LB? I really hope that’s not the case, Joseph won’t get any pass rush from the DE position, which they really need. Since it doesn’t appear they can do much with their secondary at this point, shouldn’t they be doing as much as possible to bolster up the pas rush?

Big Blue, I’ve spoken to a doctor on this one, and it would definitely have been possible for Eli to throw accurately after suffering even a seperated shoulder. Although it doesn’t appear to be quite that serious, it definitely would have been possible.

What would the Giants real motivation be to try and cover this up? I’m just generally asking not arguing. I really don’t see what they have to gain by saying the injuries are minor if in fact they know the injuries are major. It seems stupid and pointless to lie about it.

ESPN and NFL.com have both removed their articles stating that Eli Manning is out at least one month with a separated shoulder.

National media outlets are now posting articles that Manning is doubtful this week against Green Bay.

Mortensen and Schefter both tried to fuel a bogus story for media buzz. Both of their articles had no concrete evidence in their claims.

I’m just glad that Spags’ new “aggressive” system is tailored to our CBs. I’ve been hearing so much about how the new system would make them so much better and it was all the old D coordinators fault that the D was weak. After watching the Dallas game, I can really support those guys that wanted Spags as head coach. He’s really turned this D around!!

Plus, I love that all the “experts” have had to eat crow. Its obvious to them now what has been obvious to everyone on this site for weeks. The Gmen are not a 6 win team.

  12. Bryan says:

    September 11th, 2007 at 11:56 am

Its possible that the Gmen would cover up the Eli injury to prevent a team from game planning them. If Eli might play, they have to game plan 2 QBs. Who knows. Maybe the guys who got it wrong got some inside info before anything was really known.

  13. Levito says:

    September 11th, 2007 at 12:00 pm

    Heh, Bryan, funny stuff.

Is there really any reason to gameplan against Lorenzen? Just be prepared for some QB sneaks and a bunch of overthrown balls.

I’m pretty sure they’ll gameplan as if Eli will be playing with a sore shoulder. They’ll bring a lot of pressure and try to get him on the ground a few times early to shake him up and kill the passing game. If Eli plays, the Giants better give him a ton of protection. That means having Droughns back there picking up blitzes, not Matthews.

  14. Marius says:

I think Eli will play this week. Coughlin’s job is on the line and he can not go 0-2 or even 0-3 after the redskins game. Eli need to show some more leadership and carry this team next sunday! That will inspire the team and take his leadership to the next level. I think if it is sore give him off for the week. The fat boy has no business starting for the giants!

  15. Billy says:

    September 11th, 2007 at 12:03 pm

I don’t think the Giants would risk screwing the fans over by saying he’s not hurt, while he really is. I also think strategy wise it’s absolutely pointless since Lorenzen has NEVER STARTED BEFORE. Lorenzen played in pre-season and garbage time. That’s not enough time to get a scouting report on him.

The Packers’ defense is going to train as if Eli were playing because he’s the better QB. If they wind up over-preparing, then Lorenzen will have a REALLY bad game. If they under prepare (aka - expect Lorenzen and don’t train as hard) then I think Lorenzen will be average.

As for Osi, THAT is the 1 I think they’re trying to mislead other teams with. They want to make the teams on the schedule nervous, thinking Osi could be back soon..

But who knows … I just don’t think Eli is hurt too badly. He was lifting his arms up over his head afterwards, he threw a TD while “hurt”, and the only reason he got pulled from the game was so he didn’t make it into a SERIOUS injury…

Bryan: I was with you all year about Spags new aggressive D and you and I had to catch the ire of all the experts on this site who we ready to put Spags in the Hall of Fame.

Luzz: The Giants aren’t “covering” anything up. ESPN broke a story saying Eli seperated his shoulder and will be out at least a month. The Giants are merely saying that it is day to day. The advantage is that defenses would prepare to face Eli instead of spending all of their time preparing for J-Load or Anthony Wright. In the NFL every advantage helps and coaches don’t like to tip their hand. Remember last year how Strahan was day to day and so was Tuck? Also, the Giants have strict rules that all injury reports must come through TC. However, everyone on the team constantly violates this rule and leaks info to the Media.

  21. Jason Crownover says:

    September 11th, 2007 at 12:09 pm

Yeah our secondary is bad, but that game is real hard to blame on them. The supposed pressure that this defense was supposed to bring was not there. Any QB in the NFL could have picked apart our secondary with the time Romo had to throw. Seriously, he could have fumbled the snap, rolled around on the ground for a few seconds get up and slowly throw to an open Jason Witten. It’s hard to cover NFL receivers for that long. I think even with Champ Bailey and Asante Samuel back there we would have been in trouble as bad as our pass rush was. Let’s just hope that the Cowboys o-line was just that good, not our d-line was that bad.

On a side note, is it just me or do any of you on here tremble when our d is in a 3rd and 10 plus situation? I would take 3rd and 3 in a heartbeat with this team. It seems year in year out we create 3rd and long situations and the other team always converts. Something has to be done about this.

Luzz … the very few stories I read to that effect indicated that they might feel that by playing down the severity of the injury, they might be in a better bargaining position. Ie - a team or agent might be able to hold them over the barrel if they knew the extent of the injury (yada, yada, yada)

As stated though, I don’t actually believe that to be the case.

I really don’t understand your logic that they wouldn’t mislead the fans about Eli but they would about Osi. The fact of matter is TC does not want media leaking any info on his players. He wants everything to come from him so he can decide what is known and unknown.

Also, if the gmen want ross and maybe webster to become what we all think they can, throw them in the fire and let them learn form expereince…

    J Crownover:
Take a look at that game again if you tivoed it. Whitten broke off line uncovered. Not with a step on a guy, but uncovered! Kiwi never picked him up at all.

Also, when they ran to his side, Kiwi never maintaied contain. He was completely at fault for Romo’s TD. There was no pass rush at all and no one tackled, including Pierce. Who else thinks Webster is a bust? The guy can’t cover and can’t tackle, other then that he is a hall of famer. Tim Lewis got ran out of town because his players didn’t blitz and couldn’t cover, thank goodness that era is over.

All articles claiming that Manning has a separated shoulder have been removed from National Media outlets and have been replaced with the day-to-day prognosis.

You do not need concrete evidence to report news. There is no law that states that all news has to be fact either. Schefter and Mortensen are paid to provide their networks with “breaking news” stories.

  29. Tony C. says:

AJ and the rest of this blog, do you realize that Webster did start? He was the starting CB on Sunday against the Cowboys, do you realize that? He was the one that tried to patty cake Barber when he bowled him over at the 15 and then skipped to his lu to the endzone past 3 other arm tackles!!!!!
Are you kidding me about Kiwi? The only time he looks good is when he rushes the passer. I am guessing that is because he is DE and not a LB and has no idea how to play that spot! Why are we trying to force him to possibly become a mediocre LB when he could be a stud DE? We have plenty of mediocre LBs that could step in and at least not provide a gapping hole on runs and could at least try to stay with a TE!

I want to give Tony C. game balls to David Diehl and Tynes. I had no faith in either of these two guys and they played and played huge!!!

  34. Jason Crownover says:

    September 11th, 2007 at 12:40 pm

Yeah Tony C. I agree with you on Kiwi. He needs to go back to the D-line. But I don’t think our secondary necessarily played a bad game because Romo had all day to throw. The only play I am steamed about is McQuarters getting burned by a no talent 3rd string receiver Hurd to clinch the game on once again 3rd and long.

It’s too bad we don’t have depth at Safety because I really think Gibril Wilson would make an awesome OLB. He’s a good tackler, a good blitzer, plays better at the line of scrimmage, and can cover TEs better than our regular LBs.

  35. Tom says:

    September 11th, 2007 at 12:44 pm

Amazing all the comments on our crappy secondary - yes they are crappy, but Romo is a solid QB, had all day to throw, TO is going to get open with time, and Witten is the LB’s issue mainly.

First of all our D-line was pummeled by that monsterous Dallas O-line. Moving that gigantic fatass Leonard Davis to Guard was a brilliant move. 6′6 370. He was pushing our DT’s off the line 3 yards every run…

Strahan looked like a waif. At 250 and out of game shape he had nothing at all to give. WIth no pressure at all, Romo had a field day, just like Eli did with the time the O-line gave him.

Give me back Leonard Marshall, Jim Burt, Eric Howard, and George Martin.

Our LBs looked terrible, Pierce included. No stops in the backfield, none at the line. Missed tackles and zero stoppage of Witten. Our strong safety shares some of the blame, but Kiwi is an failed experiment. He needs several years to become an effective OLB. He takes wrong angles, does not contain gaps, etc. He is a DE and needs to go back there. We are lean at DE and Wilkerson is faster and better in coverage and Blackburn is a better tackler. I almost think Blackburn should give Pierce more breathers. Pierce is small and slow and gets pushed around. Mitchell is average.

In the tradition of excellent starting LB corps on the Giants in the last 25 years, this is the weakest I have ever seen. Terrible. Slow as molassas.

    Positives from Dallas:

David Diehl was SOLID - not great, but solid as was the pass blocking of the whole line.

    Eli was fantastic.

    Toomer and Plax. Excellent.

Shock was typically give it his all good.

    Ward: Good

    Jason:

Wilson would be an interesting move to OLB, but in reality we have not other safeties woth a damn and is he is too small at 6′ 209lbs. Just put in Wilkerson when he is back or Torbor who is at least quick and knows the position. Kiwi can then still be on the field and doing what he does best. I would even say put DeOssie in at OLB and let him learn at his natural position.

It is difficult to compare peformances, but having watched the Seattle-Tampa game as well, I would say Diehl did as well or perhaps better against Dallas than Petitgout did against Seattle.

The Giants defense spells all kinds of trouble. As Dallas illustrated, teams will go for it on 4th down and short yardage. And without some atempt to creatively blitz the QB, well, it is going to be a long season. I agree in that the weakness might really be with the LBs as opposed to the DEs/DTs and DBs. We all know the front office tried to solve that issue with Arrington, and it did not work out. There just were not enough draft picks to address the holes in the defense. I was surprised that Kiwi did not play a greater role in attempting to blitz Romo.
I also think there were some poor coaching decisions.

I agree the Kiwi experiment needs to end now………get him back on the line starting with Tuck w/ Strahan (out of shape) coming off the bench & Osi who knows (hurt for how long?)
Our D this year is relying on the fact that our front 4 can get some pressure on the opposing QB, or we are going to see what we saw last week in Dallas, all year long !!
Moving Kiwi back, would get Mitchell back to the strong side, and Wilkerson (when hes ok) at weak side, with Blackburn & DeOssie rotating in for Pierce & Wilkerson for breathers ………. this plan keeps our LB’ers in their natural positions (at LB), Kiwi back to his natural position (DE).
When Osi is healthy, I think we could rotate Tuck to DT occasionally, to give Robbins and Cofield some breathers
Potentially our front 4 would be a FRESH rotation of Kiwi, Stra, Tuck, Osi, Robbins, & Cofield,

I can’t help laughing histerically about this shit. Not just w/ Eli either, ESPN is telling everyone that Umenyora is out a month as well. Like I have always said ESPN has their favorites in each sport. And they have teams that they HATE. Which ESPN would never admit it, but believe you me its true. ESPN can not stand the Giants organization. Don’t ask me why you would hate the organization that is the flagship team for the most popular sport in America. Re: Strahan and Tuck being listed as “day-to-day” last year — I don’t remember that, so I’ll take your word for it, but if it’s true, anyone who knew anything about the type of injury they suffered knew that it was BS. I’ve had a Lisfranc myself, first day of practice, and it knocked me out for an entire soccer season. They’re nasty. I remember posting on the NYT Fifth Down blog last year when everyone thought Strahan would be back imminently, right after the news that it was actually a Lisfranc was announced, and saying “Don’t count on it. I’d be shocked to see him back before next season.”

But as far as a separated shoulder (or whatever the actual injury is this time) goes…I don’t know anything about shoulder injuries. I’m not a doctor and I’ve never had one myself. But I’ve read a lot of comments on different blogs in the last two days indicating that not only is it something that can heal relatively quickly, depending on severity, but it’s also something that can be played through to a certain degree. So who knows? But I think that if that’s true, “day-to-day” for Eli is far more believable than for Strahan and Tuck last season.

Matt Williamson: (1:47 PM ET ) It is true. I do hate the Giants. I expected Dallas’ D to be much improved as well, but without Newman and Ferguson, that D is in big trouble. They exploited the Newman loss. Still, Eli played VERY well, as did Plex-which caught me by surprise. But…this is about the point of the year when I expect the wheels to come off for the Giants. Yup, I hate them this year. No love here. Just callin’ it like I see it. Tough division too.

    Bryan and Tony C,
I don’t think you can say that the defense hasn’t changed under Spags. If the Giants continue to play poorly for the rest of the year under the new scheme you will be right. I doubt that will be the case as Lewis had also been run out of town in Pitt, and that defense improved to at top 5 defense and returned to blitzburgh. The key which I stated yesterday is what adjustments are made and if play improves. Kiwi was victimized, which is not unexpected, since it was his first game where they actually gameplanned against him. Will he learn from his mistakes? I believe he will. The point may be moot since he may be moved back DE. In preseason (and I understand it was preseason) the Giants defense looked terrible against the Panthers and then dominant against the Ravens. Let’s see how we play against the Packers this week.

All you people who think Kiwi will be a no good LB, wait until he learns the position, btw is only one game at his new spot, give me another game and you guys are going to be eating your words. He will become the next LT you watch and see. there hasnt been a player come close to playing like LT but I think this guy has it.

I’m a big believer in Kiwi at LB postion, I hope I’m right. Spag just needs to let this guys to UNLEASH!! play some smash mouth defense!
We need the badfellas back in N.Y. Pierce, Mitchell and Kiwanuka. These guys will knock you the F&*%K OUT!

And everyone stop bashing J-load, he is going to run for 100 yards this weekend.

  59. Kevros says:

    September 11th, 2007 at 3:00 pm

Kiwi is not fast enough to be a dominant LB. If you have Kiwi’s speed and you are a LB you nned to know exactly where to be at every second and Kiwi obviously does not. And sadly enough it will probably be a long time until he would learn the position enough to be dominant. It seemed like a good idea to me at first and I don’t mean insult Kiwi’s intelligence but he needs to go back to DE with Osi’s injury. Awasom was getting man-handled and Stra looked sluggish.

Also, it’s really annoying that some people on here seem happy that the defense is doing poorly just so they can say I told ya so. I realize that if the D was awesome there would have been others saying the exact same thing about the D being awesome. It’s just frustrating that some people post and make predictions on here just to have the possibility of coming back a few days, weeks, or months to say I told ya so…

I m not ready to give up on KIWI either. Unless OSi is out, in that case I say form a rotation where the offense wont know when he is going to play DE/OLB. It was the first game and it has been mentioned that the g men were used to practicing in upstate new york. Different climate than down in Texas. But still, Torbor and Blackburn should be able to rotate in and provide some different matchups.
On Wilkinson, he should be able to come back soon. With a patella subluxation, you just have to get the ligaments and muscles tightened up around it so the player feels stable. I m interested in seeing what he can do. Get him in there!!!

I am first to admit that I though Diehl and Tynes were going to be horrible and I am more then happy to have to eat crow on those points. The point I was making all offseason is that our defense didn’t play badly because Lewis didn’t blitz. Our secondary drops interceptions, leaves guys uncovered and overall this defense can’t tackle. They can’t plain form tackle, they throw shoulders at people. Lewis only could put them in a position to succeed and he did. Simarily, spags can’t go out there and tackle. The personnell, especially the secondary is lacking and I blame the FO who have not been able to address secondary or LB for a long long time.

Hey ya, what about this guy the Giants just signed?

DT Russell Davis, 6-4 and 310 pounds, was most recently with the Seahawks, who released him on Sept. 4. He has played in 104 games with 83 starts and recorded 348 tackles (212 solo), 11.5 sacks, nine passes defensed, three forced fumbles and two fumble recoveries.

In his only season in Seattle in 2006, Davis played in 13 games with no starts. He had 30 tackles (24 solo) and a career-high 3.0 sacks. Davis had a season-high six tackles at Denver on Dec. 3 and added five tackles in the Seahawks’ two postseason games. He joined Seattle as a free agent on March 24, 2006.

Can this guy give us the push we need in the middle?

I hate to tell you guys but ESPN is starting to look like CNN did just before they went down the tubes. I know most of guys grew up watching it, but all the flash and HD is not going to cover up their bias for either the NY Giants or the Yankees. Just tell the story, don’t gives us your 2-cents! Even their radio network is starting to lose it. I was listening to Colin Cowherd rip a new a-hole for New York fans…Boston fans, not Yankees fans were truer baseball fans…Mets fans weren’t either because like the Yankees, the Mets spend the most for players and that’s why both stadiums sell out. If both teams fielded just so-so teams no one in NYC would attend any of the games! …Knick fans didn’t know basketball! So on and so forth! Apart from being one of the more dumber things to I’ve heard Cowherd say. Yes, I love to watch my team play when they’re winning, but I’ll also shell out the bucks to see them play even when they’re losing. Its called being a true fan! Rip NYC all you want Cowherd, but I don’t see any hotel operators in Vegas building a miniature replica of Seattle, do you! I remember attending a Giants-Cardinals game in Tempe (loved it when the Cards were in our division, I was able to see the Giants in person at least once a year) and I was sitting in the first row right behind the Giants bench and for the entire game about 100 so-called Cardinals fans kept shouting “Manyard sucks.” Now you tell me what kind of true fan does that?

Also to everyone - Please keep in mind that I chose the word “seem” for a reason. I realize most people aren’t actually happy when the Giants do poorly. But from your posts it makes it seem to everyone (or at least to me) that you are. Just wanted to clarify that…

BIg Blue - Osi has a history of taking a looooong time to come back from injuries. Lets get Kiwi back to a position where he can help this team.

I agree with others that think over time he could be a solid SLB but he could be a really good DE for us right now! I wish they would just move him back.

  80. Muahaha says:

    September 11th, 2007 at 4:25 pm

Guesses from Mike and the Mad Dog are that Eli will miss 7-10 days (based on their questioning a former QB who had the same injury). That means he won’t be in for Green Bay most likely. I say sit him. One game is not worth risking your franchise QB for the next 5+ years. Oh and Eli is def franchise now… wow what a performance. I knew waiting for Eli in fantasy would pay off!

  81. Frank E. Kurczewski says:

    September 11th, 2007 at 4:34 pm

The Giants are downplaying (hiding) the extent of his injury. They had a chance to bring in Charley Frye but , as usual, wouldn’t pay the price.

Meanwhile, we bring in Russell Davis (who?)–another Marcus Bell type while the Cowboys court Tank “The Criminal” Johnson. One organization wants to go to the Super Bowl, the one that signed Leonard Davis (who demolished our DL), while the other organization wants to put money in the coffers of the 49 Mara progeny.

  82. Krow says:

    September 11th, 2007 at 4:42 pm

I had heard we offered Davis more money… but Dallas said he could play the softer guard position. So he went there.

  83. Simmz says:

    September 11th, 2007 at 4:42 pm

There is a reason Charlie Frye was benched in the first half suday. I watched the game, he was horrible. I definately would not want Charlie Frye at qb for the Giants.

  84. Dan S says:

    September 11th, 2007 at 4:46 pm

Leonard Davis wouldn’t go to the Giants and he is playing RG. That is where Snee plays. He is getting paid way too much to be playing that position. Tank Johnson is always in trouble, I don’t want him. Davis hasn’t played yet so you don’t know how he will do. Did you watch Frye? Why would the Giants trade for him? By the time he learns the play book and gets down his timing with the WR’s then Eli will already be back. Frye is garbage. What is a coffer?

  85. Big Blue says:

    September 11th, 2007 at 4:55 pm

Luzz: I am torn between the KIWI situation, part of me wants to give him more time, the other part keeps seeing flashes of him looking foolish at the position he was so naturally supposed to fall in to. Early on, I agreed and thought he should make the transition fairly easily. Then I saw him taking bad angles to the ball and sitting in his zone as Whitten blew by for another 30 yard catch. If OSI is out, then I say move him back to DE. Actually I would rather see him at DE no matter what, I dont think he will make a great OLB. I think Chase and Torbor can pick up the slack and do a better job than KIWI did. Even if it was his first game

  86. Ted says:

    September 11th, 2007 at 4:56 pm

    Frank,
Leonard Davis doesn’t even play left tackle for the Cowboys. He was effective because he was playing guard not tackle. So bringing in Davis would not have helped the Giants at the left tackle position and Diehl had a very good game against one of the premier pass rushers Demarcus Ware. How about getting off the soap box about how cheap the Mara’s are. Were they cheap when they won two Superbowls? They obviously had the right players or they wouldn’t have won. With the right GM which was George Young and the right coaching which improved from Perkins to Parcells the Giants won. One game is hardly enough time to evaluate if Reese is on the right track or not. Throwing money at the problem doesn’t work, just look at the Redskins.

  87. Monday Morning GM says:

    Just my 2 cents today…

    1. My gut tells me Eli will play vs. Green Bay.

    2. That Dallas OLine was huge… our defensive line look tiny compared to those monsters, therefore no pass rush and Romo had all day. Our defense will be much different against a smaller line.

    3. Yes, Kiwi struggled in coverage but he played the run pretty well.

    4. Give Spags time to develop these guys for crying out loud. Lewis put a vanilla defense out there that was afraid to blitz and attack. At least Spags is putting some fire into our guys. Now if they could just cover…

    5. Nice job by Ward, he showed the preseason was no fluke. I would have liked to have seen Bradshaw out there a couple of times though.

For anyone who felt that the tossing-like-a-ragdoll hit was a little much on Eli, (and actually, for anyone who is a true Giants fan yearning for the days of old), and you’re looking for the Giants to remember the hit, I invite you to read the following link:

    http://home.earthlink.net/~sei.....ts290.html

    A snippet:

On the Giants’ previous possession, 49ers nose tackle Jim Burt had lunged low at Hostetler on a second-down passing play. Hostetler, his left leg planted as he set to throw, took a shot from Burt’s helmet directly on the left knee.

Hostetler stayed down for several minutes, but the injury - a hyperextension - wasn’t as serious as feared. The Giants were very serious - and mad at Burt, their former teammate.

”I yelled at Burt,” Taylor said. ”I hollered, ‘If that’s the way you want to play, that’s how we’ll play. But someone else was going to lose a quarterback.”

With the Giants trailing 13-9, Marshall picked himself up off the ground after being blocked down, gave chase and hit Montana squarely from behind. Montana never saw Marshall coming . . . and never knew what struck him.

  118. marnor says:

    September 11th, 2007 at 6:28 pm

  122. mattindallas says:

    September 11th, 2007 at 6:46 pm

The only reason I think we may not see as much of Bradshaw as we may like is because the fumbling issue on special teams on Sunday ……….that has to be scary to Coughlin, especially right now, I expect to see a big dose of Droughns & Ward this week, with Eli possibly resting ……. i’d like him to rest his shoulder (no matter what any report says, he’s our franchise player …….)

  123. Billy says:

    September 11th, 2007 at 7:01 pm

I’m praying they put DeOssie in at SAM, but they’ll most likely (IMO) put Mitchell at SAM and Blackburn at weakside.

I’ just saying how I’d play things … I honesty don’t think Kiwi would be that bad at LB .. if he had actually had more time to prepare. It takes a lot longer than 1 training camp, some mini-camps, practices, and preseason to learn that position. You need to have instincts and those take a while to develop, or trust.

I think Kiwi and Tuck at DE would be good. If Tuck keeps starting, I honestly see him getting 10 sacks this season..

  124. SaltedCracker says:

    September 11th, 2007 at 7:04 pm

Luzz - Its just speculation right now. With Osi out for a few weeks and Willy Joe on IR, we are very thin at DE right now. We would have to start Strahan and Tuck, with Awasom as our only backup. So even if we don’t move Kiwi back to DE full time, he might need to play some DE for the next couple of weeks.

Adam Schein of FoxSports, speaking on NY Daily News Live, reports that the Giants have contacted the Buccaneers about QB Chris Simms.

lol too bad its not PHIL

I actually wouldn’t mind having Simms on the sideline. I think he’d be a better emergency guy than Lorenzen, even though I like Lorenzen.

Sure Lorenzen is nice when it comes to QB sneaks and running up the field to throw a goofy block, but that’s the play that gets QBs hurt and tired out. Lorenzen also has a SLOW windup, if the o-line isn’t clicking then that means a LOT of sacks coming up.

I want Eli to start if he can, but Simms as a backup wouldn’t be bad, even if it’s just to have instead of Wright (whom I dislike).

Lorenzo should just become our backup LT… He has good feet LOL LOL LOL

don’t get me wrong i always wanted simms to be a giant and he’s definately better then wright, but better then the pillsbury throwboy, i don’t think so at least not at the moment lorenzens gonna show us what he’s got this week if eli sits and i think he’ll do very well

anyone know where charlie frye’s being traded to? just curiosity

    Frye to Seattle

Frye was traded to the Seahawks for a 6th round pick.

Now don’t get me wrong, I love the idea of Simms Jr on the sideline… but I’ve heard from Bucs fans that he was pretty much useless in practice after the injury. The term used was “forgot how to throw”, and that he’s affected psychologically from the injury - siezes up at the first chance of contact. Not sure how much of this is true, but its cause for concern.

hey the giants have an awesome qb coach i’m sure he can get simms back to par giants would become the QB legacy team i hear joe montanas sons are in college is one of them gonna be a giant too lol

    via Rotoworld:

Dr. James Andrews confirmed the Giants’ initial diagnosis of Eli Manning’s shoulder injury as a sprained A-C joint.
Andrews said that as long as Manning can tolerate the pain, he can play without fear of further injuring his shoulder. It’s all up to Eli now. Watch to see if he practices this week. The Giants are confident that even if he misses Week 2, he will be ready for Week 3.

i just read most of these posts..pretty good ideas and such…

whos in for the idea of trading Mr. Strahan haha…we could probably get a decent pick (2nd rd maybe), save a shit load of money, and free up a spot for Osi/Tuck and maybe Kiwi…I know it sounds crazy but, if were in a rebuilding yr, and all these guys are injured now, lets rebuild…

  140. Remy says:

    September 11th, 2007 at 9:44 pm

Doubt you’d get much for Strahan…. certainly not a second.

Let’s see what his ex-wife can get for him at her next garage sale.

Anyway, if you want to save money… let’s look at Robbins and his $2,500,000 salary. This seems very high for a journeyman rotational player.

    Giants should sign BYRON LEFTWICH

Krow you bring up a good pt…and, coefield proved he can hold his own, and didnt we waste a pick on Alford…are those 2 going to show up or what

  145. Krow says:

    September 11th, 2007 at 10:30 pm

As for the Kiwi experiment… I was on the fence. But I thought he was going to be a dogging, QB terrorizing LB. Not dropping off into coverage. If that’s the plan then I agree, it’s pointless.

  146. Krow says:

    September 11th, 2007 at 10:35 pm

And the possible Simms trade… doesn’t seem likely. He has legitimate aspirations to be a starting QB, and won’t be satisfied as a career backup. Also… he’s getting starter money. We won’t pay that for a player who has no shot to win the job.

  147. Scott in Hawaii says:

Krow - You want to get rid of last year’s team defensive MVP? Robbins arguably could have gone to the pro bowl last year and he has stayed healthy since he’s been on the team. Robbins is a key component.

  148. Troy says:

    September 11th, 2007 at 10:45 pm

Robbins was awesome last season. He had 5.5 sacks, don’t know why you would want to get rid of a pass rusher after what we saw last night. He was a Pro Bowl snub last season and a STARTER, not just a rotational guy. Do you even watch the Giants?

Aj - There is absolutely no way we’d get anything higher than a 6th rounder for Strahan. A 2nd rounder? This isn’t Madden, there’s no team that would even consider that.

  149. Krow says:

    September 11th, 2007 at 10:55 pm

Scott… I’d rather he played great. But if he’s back to being just another guy then we need to take a look at how we spend that cap money.

  150. Krow says:

    September 11th, 2007 at 10:57 pm

Troy… the interior line looked like a welcome mat. Did you watch the game?

  151. kj says:

    September 12th, 2007 at 12:15 am

krow - robbins has stepped up the last 2 years he’s better then anyone out of the DT’s we got now except cofield and he’d be snatched up real quick if released
