G101 Weekly Picks: Wild-Card Weekend

The first round of the playoffs starts tomorrow, and it should open a great weekend of football.  This is the most exciting weekend of the football season in my opinion, with exception to opening weekend of course, because much anticipated matchups are either played, or set up for the following week.  This weekend, almost each matchup could be decided by a coin flip, but most of the G101 writers are aligned with some of the same picks.

Washington has a chance to go across country to deliver an upset to the crazed and loud fans in Seattle, and Pittsburgh looks to avenge a loss a few weeks back to the tough-running squad from Jacksonville.  We all know who Big Blue takes head-on Sunday afternoon, but do they have it takes to finally stop Jeff Garcia  Will they shut up Ronde Barber and the rest of Buccaneers defense?  Finally, what should promise to be a bruising and punishing game out West brings together new found rivals: Tennessee versus San Diego.

This should be a great weekend, and please take the time to lend your thoughts about our predictions, as well as leave yours.

Wow…I guess I could either jump up to a 2 game lead, or fall into a 2 game hole. Either way, as I said, it will be a great weekend of football!

i think you break even and get the Skins right but the Steelers wrong

i am just thinking that a slightly disrepected steelers team can find the 12th man in the stands. me thinks though, that if JAX coudl go up there from FLORIDA and beat them in the FRIGGIN’ SNOW, the 12th man won’t matter much anyways, but I see something in PIT that coudl pull this thing off…

I was just saying this to a friend, the only way I can see the Steelers winning is if they pull out to a 14+ point lead early and then let their defense go to work on Garrard. It could happen…I mean, the Steelers are home dogs in the playoffs, talk about a chip on your shoulder.

If the steelers can shut down jones-drew and fred taylor…then JAX has nothing. the corners will take care of the edges, and the dropped balls by the JAX receivers will account for plenty of stalled drives.

I think the Redskins pull off the upset like you said. I got the Bucs winning and think it will be a close game. I see a low scoring game I just trust Garcia more in clutch moments than I do Eli to put a winning drive together. The O’Hara and Madison doubtful calls really hurt the Giants.

Now since you dropped 2 questions at Eagles Eye. . .

How much does it piss Giant fans off when Eli throws those late game interceptions and keeps that deer in the headlight look on his face?

and as far as crowds go why did Kareem McKenzie feel the need to say. . .

“When’s the last time that you heard such a loud, boisterous crowd and you said, ‘Wow, I really can’t hear?’” McKenzie said yesterday. When a reporter pressed the tackle on his answer, McKenzie responded: “I couldn’t tell you. We thrive on crowd participation also.”

but your right on G-Men prolly winning, they are on the road afterall

Anecdotal evidence on why Eli must go:

This from ESPN.com’s Bill “Sports Guy” Simmons on the Giants-Patriots game…

“…Belichick trying to pull off a “Milton Berle Game” because he thought the Giants were only playing hard for a half, nearly letting the game slip away, then reluctantly saying, “All right, I guess we’ll start blitzing the hell out of Eli” near the end of the third quarter. And that was that. My buddy Paul went to the game — as soon as the Pats unleashed some pressure on Eli, I started texting him, “Here comes the Eli pick, here it comes …” and then it finally happened at the worst possible time. Not a good sign for the Giants’ playoff hopes…

Q: Who do you see coming out of the NFC? With the way Dallas finished the season, you could make a case for every team, right?

SG: I respectfully disagree. I’d break it down like this …

    NO CHANCE

N.Y. Giants: Eli Manning would have to win THREE games on the road. Did you see the look on his face during the fourth quarter of the Pats game? Come on…”

And with Webster the starting CB this week I just hope the Giants coaching staff is smart enough not to let him be matched up with Galloway..It will be a long day for Giant fans if that happens.

Dale Anderson Heres a bet if the Giants lose I will never post on this site again since its mostly non Giants fans anyway. If the Giants win you stop posting on this site. You are obviously not a Giant Fan since we are in the playoffs and still all you can do is make negative post about Eli. Yes Eli lost the game because he gave up 38 points. So put your money were your mouth is and except this bet. If I should fall wrap me in a NY Banner.
Peace everybody lets go big blue.

Of all our the playoff teams, I think this game vs TB is the handiest. It is definitely within the reach and I think we would have to self destruct to lose it.. Tb don’t give up a lot of points…don’t score many points either

That Simmons article pissed me off….hasn’t he been paying attention at all to Eli? I’d be MUCH more worried if the Giants had homefield advantage, since Eli is so much better on the road. I looked up his home/road splits, and every season of his career since his awful rookie year, he’s been better on the road (significantly better two years ago). The team is 7-1 on the road and 3-5 at home, where would you prefer them to play?

Also, on a completely random note, does anyone on here know of any bars in the DC area that are a good place for Giants fans to go to watch the games? Last year my girlfriends roomate (an Eagles fan) made me go to a bar in Georgetown that’s a notorious Eagles bar to watch the playoff game, so this year I want to pay her back by making her go to a Giants bar, but I can’t find any information about it online. It pisses me off that I’ve been able to find an Eagles bar, a Steelers bar, a Ravens bar (!), a Cowboys bar, a Packers bar, and a Raiders bar, but not a Giants bar.

Im with Buchanan on all the pics. Except for maybe Pittsburgh. They seem to be having a lot of offensive line problems. As for the Giants.. they are gonna hit Garcia so hard that he might lose his lisp and turn straight.

Yea right Dale. The Pats only played half the game? The look on Brady’s face for most of the game tells a different story. He looked pretty ticked off to me. Besides thats what the Pats have been saying in all the games they were faltering, heck that is what every team on the decline says when they have a rough outing. This why everyone is “hating” on the Pats and their fans because they can’t just say oh we had a close game and other team played really well. You really think Bill risked his undefeated season by letting the other team take a big lead. Just like they did all season when they ran up the score on everyone? Come on that Pats have played all their games balls to the wall and everyone knows it.

And oh no Eli will have to win three road games in a row. You do know the Giants are on a seven game road game winning streak right.

Hey Chris I don’t know of any Giants bars in the area. But if you are up for a little drive (no longer than a half hour from DC) Drive to Old Town Alexandria and go to South Sides. While it isn’t a Giants bar there are definately a decent number of Giants fans and the Eagles are definately not welcomed (since all the other fans are skins fans.) I don’t know if I’ll be there myself I like to watch these games at home with a lot of beer but I know a few regulars will be there in giants gear.

    Memo to boooojaaaa:

Let it be known, little man, that I am a huge Giant fan. I want the Giants to win. I want them to go all the way.

But it can’t be done with Eli. He is a work in progress who can progress no further. It was a mistake to have drafted him, We need to find another QB.

Those of you who insist of reciting the mantra “Eli’s our man, Eli forever” do the G-Men no good. In fact, you are part of the problem.

    Eli must go!

How do you know im little I am 5′7″, what does that have to do with anything. A work in progress who can not progress what the hell are you smoking. I see u didnt take the bet. If Eli throws four tds and the giants win does he still suck. In life Dale people step up to challenges and should be happy when there team has a shot. Thats all we can ask for a shot and we have it. I am fully aware we can lose this game and that all u so called fans would rather Eli implodes so u can come on her and say see I told you so. Not me Dale Im sailing the ship through the storm for good or bad. Go big Blue.

5 out of 6 of you are 2-0 in pics as of this morning. Pretty damn good. Now, if you can go 4-0 after today, that would be magnificent. Giants at Bucs in less than 4 hours. Backups gotta step up… Webster, Torbor, Wilkinson, Ruegamer, Boss. Unlike recent history playoff games these guys weren’t signed off the street to cover for a devastating bout of starter injuries. But in the end, it’s in Eli’s hands. Either three one-n-done, or he shakes the monkey off his back and it’s on to Green Bay.
