Giants 101

The Giants are going to the Super Bowl. Their message: “don’t believe yet.”

For the third time in the storied history of playoff football at Lambeau Field, postgame celebrations took place in the visitor’s locker room. Amid the euphoria, Giants linebacker Antonio Pierce found his way to a camera to show off his new NFC Champions hat. But he did not come to gloat about his team’s improbable victory, instead he had words of caution, ““We got one more hat to get, one more hat. Don’t believe yet.”

You hear that ESPN? How about you, FOX Network, you listening? Pierce’s remarks reflect the Giants we-don’t-need-you attitude for all the so-called ‘experts’ that haven’t picked them to win a game in over a month. It’s hard for these analysts to understand this team because they study match-ups and situational stats without looking at what really matters. The Giants don’t have a roster full of pro-bowlers who break major records and date supermodel girlfriends, and they’re fine with that, because they know there is only one true award in the game of football. They are winning as a unit, and the support that resonated from their locker room after Sunday’s game is an inspiration to anyone who has ever played team sports. Coach Coughlin promised his team before the NFC Championship game, “if you throw your heart over the wall, your body will follow.” They did just that.

All season, Giants players and coaches have had to explain their success on the road, and though they dodge the question, the answer is clear. They thrive on adversity. If you’re not a believer of this team, don’t become one. While New York sheds critics with every play in their magical postseason run, they won’t be making space for newcomers to the bandwagon any time soon. For those of you who are aboard, you knew at the start of the playoffs this team was something special. It’s been a great ride so far.

The Giants “have been underdogs all year,” according to Osi Umenyiora, the team’s lone pro-bowler, and “with the amount of adversity we’ve been through this year, I don’t know how they [the ‘experts’] could pick against us. It doesn’t make any logical sense to me.” But they still do. They say Eli can’t win the big game, but he clearly doesn’t need their help. Plaxico Burress had the best season of any WR playing on one leg without practice, but he doesn’t care for their pro-bowl vote. David Diehl wants these people to keep questioning his ability to protect Eli’s blindside. Amani Toomer wants to hear he is too old to play and the Giants secondary wants to hear they are too young. Bring on the criticism. Tell them they don’t have a chance. These people only add fuel to the fire.

With every game the stakes get higher and the opponent gets better. The Giants now face what is arguably the greatest team ever assembled on the biggest stage. You think the experts will give them any love now? Nope. And that’s just the way they want it. Don’t believe yet folks, don’t believe yet.

For all the headhunters demanding an apology (jay and others):

It does say in the game picks that I chose the Packers, but if you read my article right after that I withdrew my selection. Here’s what I wrote:

“You may have noticed I chose the Pack in my game preview, but after writing this column, I can’t in good conscience pick against our team in the biggest game since the last super bowl. I don’t know if I can pick a winner at all, this game is too important for these kinds of things. F**k it, let’s kick the door down!”

I will apologize nonetheless for ever doubting this team even for a second, but I did pick them to beat TB and Dallas.

The Giants had a random computer drawing for tickets to the Super Bowl for us season ticket holders weighted by senority and I was not picked and really not suprised. I only have 30 years as a ticket holder and still a rookie but what the hell
    LETS GO GIANTS!!!

Nate, hold your ground kid you thought we were going to lose thats cool. That’s why this team is doing what they doing…making no believers into believers one man at a time. People asking me at work “T” you really think your boys got a shot, my reply…They got to show up to AZ right? they got to play in the game right? shit, might as well win it…We already crashed the party, lets leave everybody with a bad taste in there mouths…

I’m absolutely BURSTING with how proud of this team I am! Before the season started I predicted a 10 and six record right here on this sight!Do you see the faces of all the opposing QB”S we’ve beaten? Garcia. Romo and now Farve. They believed in there own hype and thought they ncould walk on the field and win the game. The Giants preceded to smack them in the mouth! I tell you all right now we are going to win the whole thing! Bring on the Patsies so we could complete our revenge tour! Just my 2 cents.

Since we will have all of this extra time to talk Giants, here is something that should make an interesting discussion topic: It’s great that the Giants won 10 road games in a row, but why a losing record at home? I think that many of us long time NYG fans who are rightly ecstatic about the team got down on them at the drop of a hat. In Giants stadium, many of us were very quick to boo the team at the least mistake. The NY mainstream press, who are currently busy re-writing history, were down on this team for pretty much the entire regular season and have conditioned the fans to react this way with their constant negativity. Some of them even called for the Giants to draft or bring in another FA QB to “push” Eli. The bloggers like this site were the only ones who really kept the faith and even some of you did not truly believe in the G-men until they were holding up the NFC Championship trophy. To digress, I think that it’s great that the NYG have fans that have been season ticket holders for 30 years or more, but the team needs some new, younger, and less jaded blood in the stands. The new stadium with its extra seats will be a great help. Other teams have fans that cheer their hometown heroes on no matter what. I’m not saying that is what should happen, but visiting teams should be totally fearful of playing in Giants Stadium, but they weren’t this season. We in NY/NJ have been conditioned by the media to be totally negative and unforgiving of the least mistake by our sports teams. Were we fans truly the 12th man that we should have been for this Giants team when they were at home? I think that there were times when we were not. Thank God that the NYG were as good a road team as they were. It’s a good omen for the game next week. Go Giants.

Wasnt it nice to watch everyone at ESPN eat crow on Sunday. Is there a GIANTS fan out there who wasn’t bouncing off the wall for the last 10 minutes of the game. This is why you watch sports. Eli is shutting down all his critics. TC is proving he can get the job done, he just doesnt need all the pre-madonnas. ( see TIVI barber, Shockey). Ive said it all along, shock is one of my favorite giants players but he hurts this team more than he helps it. How you might ask. He does stupid &%#$ and always has. It gets wrote off as this guy who plays with spirit. he is a cancer. Trade him off for someone who can help us more. Develope boss and matt. I for one, thought plax was the same. I was wrong on that as he has proven himself over and over this season. This team has the potential to go into AZ and knock the pats out.

MJ, I agree, I think the new stadium will help. Ask anyone and they will tell you, a new stadium brings new tradition. The old tradition consisted of ticket holders from way back who if they did show up, showed little emotion. Thats just a fact of the game. Its whats going to happen in that situation. But it just knocks out the 12 man. There are still 11 guys facing 11 other guys. Thats were the games are won!

Great article I agree I hope everyone keeps picking against us! I live in Rhode Island so I have to hear this Patriots RAH RAH stuff all day long “its not even gonna be close”.. “the Giants dont stand a chance”… etc etc etc…. I thought Terry Bradshaw jinxed us when he picked the Giants btw. I have a great feelinjg that our defense will continues to play at this level Eli will continue his dominance and we will get a win. If I am correct we were a little banged up in that last game.. Shockey went down, Pierce had two bad ankles and Plax was not as healthy as he is now, not to mention the secondary has really come on strong in the playoffs.. so let the experts pick the PATS I hope they all day ..and I hope the fans up here continue to slam the Giants and on the 4th of FEB I’ll bring in nice big steaming bowl of Crow for all of them to eat!!!!

    GO BLUE

And so, in the final analysis, it comes down to two teams who put everything they had into their final regular season game - in this case, a game they played against each other.
Some argued that New York should take it easy due to their squad being weakened through injury, but the coaching staff did a superb job of work for the organisation. The Giants came out of that game with a few more injury worried, but more importantly, huge momentum.
Some claim that Bill Belichick wanted a 16-0 record. And I think that’s true, to a point. Once the Patriots got to 15-0 my guess is that Belichick knew he needed 16-0. A defeat against the unfancied Giants could have had disastrous consequences in the play-offs for the Patriots. A defeat at any other stage of the season could be dismissed, but not on that final weekend.
The Giants could gain momentum out of a hard-fought, close and noble defeat, whereas any defeat for the Patriots risked derailing their whole season.
Just look at Indianapolis and Dallas.
Those two organisations meekly surrendered at home, amid much self-congratulation and back-slapping, a day after the Giants and Patriots had fought tooth and nail in New Jersey. Now, a few weeks later, they’re not talking so proud, they’re not acting so proud and they’re not heading to Arizona.
I’m a bit of a Patriot fan and I want New England to win in Arizona. But if the Giants prevail - and with the Lesser Manning in the form of his life and the battered and bruised Giants squeezing every ounce of effort out of themselves - then fair play to them, they’ll have thoroughly deserved it.
Just don’t blame the officials if you lose, please.

I live in western Mass, and have to deal day in and day out with stupid Pats fans, who also know nothing about the Giants. One of y coworkers was running at the mouth about how much of a whiner Eli is. I had to correct her and explain that the complaint about him is that he is too even keeled. Perhaps I put blinders on, but it is always interesting to hear the misconceptions about our team that are perpetuated by the general populace/media. I hope we shut down Moss, sack Brady 5 times, and beat them 34-24

If you knew the team “was something special,” why’d you pick the Pack? Weren’t we all skeptical at various points during the year? Just asking. Perhaps there’s room for one more on the bandwagon.

In my thirty years as a rooting fan this was the third greatest victory I’ve seen–behind the 1991 NFC Championship Game and Super Bowl.

Peter 2 …….. correct me if I am wrong but I remember that many of your posts on here pre-draft, post-draft, training camp, etc were incredibly negative (anti-eli, anti-coughlin, anti deihl moving to LT, etc). Seems funny and somewhat ironic to me that you are offering a spot on the Giants bandwagon. While you were not as bad as that fool “MikeInMiami” or “Bryan”, you (or someone posting under the “Peter 2″ screen name) was right up there. Was that you posting those comments? If so, when did you join the bandwagon, which btw didn’t have many people on at that time?

MJ - I just spent about a month in New England (i’m originally from connecticut) and I can tell you that even the mighty Patriots think they have a problem with not having enough fan noise. Even Bill SImmons, the worst Boston fan of them all, mentioned it before this past weekend’s game.

We’re not the only ones who don’t pump sound into a Bose-designed stadium.

Wow Andrew that was a very interesting comment, but if you are “a bit of a Patriot fan and I want New England to win in Arizona” why are you posting that here @ Giants101? I am sure Patriot fans would love to hear your comments like this one here so go there and post comments. Also if you are an actual fan of a NFL team then at some point you would have questioned a ref’s call. So maybe, just maybe,Giants fans posting comments to other Giants fans @ a Giants blog can question odd calls that affect the Giants without someone who wants our next opponent to beat us opening his pie hole about it. Wheeeeeewwwww that’s over.

Andrew if you are a Giants fan well I guess you have the right to criticize the team, apparently you are not and maybe you should not criticize our opinions here. Go to the Patriot act you might enjoy it more over the next two weeks.

I was and always have been anti Tom Coughlin and still am at times, but hey he has surprised me!

    … I was never once Anti Eli… I was always anti Secondary…

That said, many of us are proud that the giants are now in the superbowl…

They have worked their butts off and deserve it… But I dont remember many here predicting thar these very same giants would be superbowl bound.. But that doesnt mean we dont enjoy the moment any less!

So now, we enjoy the moment. We like it, sure!! There are 20 million bandwagon fans all across the country that want to see the Giants beat the “best team in sports history” So just because we werent as optimistic as others doesnt make Bad people…

Some of us have lives outside of these blogs, and the giants are an awesome form of entertainment come Sunday, while others Live, breathe and sleep Giants… It doesnt make that fan any better..

While Hopkins, God bless you for being a true fan.. You are not a bigger fan for “I told you so” attitude and dogging the non-believers…

Sure, I doubted… But am happy now, and like I said, Im glad I was wrong!

These blogs now are a time to reflect because its not everyday that our team is superbowl bound(only 4 times in last 30 years for me) So Im going to enjoy it…

As for Shockey- I see many people dogging Shockey and I want to be the first to wish he was still here to enjoy the Super Bowl. Many people dont understand that due to his injuries he can only do Spartan workouts in miami on natural grass and gets a lotta flack for it… I remember many people earlier this year, that were giving Plax and Shox a real hard time about working out in Miami… But I dont see many people giving Plax a hard time now..

Yes, while Boss is good. Shox is a true Giant and should be treated well for taking his licks for all the hard work he has put in… Its a shame hes not there now! Can you imagine a 100% healthy shockey on this team right now?!

I hope the Giants bring him back next year and run a 2 tight end offense and utilize all our best weapons(Plax, Shock, Smith, Boss, Amani(is he coming back? and Bradshaw and Jacobs…

In the draft hopefully picking up 2 guys to further protect Eli for the next decade

MikeInMiami @ 20 - thanks for the post, your points are well taken. I apologize for being hard on you especially. I just remember that a short 6 months ago, it was almost to be Giants fan on this site with the incessant bashing of eli, coughlin, reese, deihl, the draft, the secondary, etc. Negative posts outweighed positive posts 3 to 1. At the time, I felt that this current team was stronger, deeper, younger, faster than the 2006 Giants who at the beginning of the season were predicted to go to the Super Bowl. Clearly, there were very few believers 6 months ago. Fast forward to today and you see a talented, deep, very well coached, cohesive team that is realizing its previously untapped potential. Truly gratifying.

Anyway Mike, I understand where you are coming from. You clearly are a Giant fan or you wouldn’t be posting on here for over a year. I’ll let it go. We now stand together in rooting for the Giants in the Super Bowl. We can argue about Coughlin after we take home the Lombardi trophy, lol.

Hopkins–Yes, you are correct. I do owe a huge mea culpa but I’ve always been a fan–cranky (that guy Dale got under my skin a few times with his disgusting “toe-tag liberal” line rant against Eli) at times, an Eli doubter, a huge Bradshaw and Plax guy. I can tell you all the things I’ve been wrong about–Corey Webster, Tom Coughlin, Aaron Ross and, yes, even Kevin Gilbride–but you could write a book with all the things I’ve been wrong about this year. Reggie Torbor playing like a Pro Bowler. Who’d have thought? I also know everyone on here has been right and more often wrong many times over this year. I can’t remember a weirder year.

I actually have a pretty good feeling about this game coming up. Win or lose, I respect this team and know they’ll give the Pats all they can handle.

Donning a Lance Armstrong jersey while riding a stationary bike? So funny!
Swallowing an enitre bottle of pills and then saying you have “25 Million reason to live?” Are you kidding me?

TO is pure hollywood- he says and does absolutely ridiculous things, and other then pure entertainment value I never take him seriously- unless its game time and he’s on the football field…

There are a lot of reasons the Cowboys lost- first and foremost being that the Giants played a better game- but TO played coming off an injury, and played hard. Yes, he’s overreactive, overemotional, and absolutely ridiculous…but not once during the Giants/Cowboys game did I question his heart…

And yes, TO crying- absolutely funny..but the funniest part was the fact that he was wearing those ridiculous sunglasses the whole time he was hiccupping all over himself and crying about “My Captain…”- and I love the guy

  36. Brandon Buchanan says:

TO is a whiny baby…he doesn’t deserve half the accolades he is given. He is a nuisance to the league, and to each team he is on, including the Cowboys. Plaxico has done more for his team, and meant more to hsi team than TO, and gets no recognition. He has had a bad ankle (ligament off the bone) and a sore knee (massive swelling) the enitre season, yet is having a Pro Bowl year.

Funny how Cowboy fans love TO…where were they when he was dancing on your beloved star at midfield. How quickly do ya’ll forget…

I’ve been keeping up with ESPN and they give the Giants no credit whatsoever.

At super bowl central, writer Gene Wojciechowski starts his article with, “Win Super Bowl XLII — and they will — and unbeaten New England will have no peer, no point of comparison in sports history.”

Jeffri Chadiha started his article bemoaning the fact that there won’t be a Packers-Patriots super bowl. His article just got pulled half an hour ago.

    January 22nd, 2008 at 4:49 pm

    Brandon,
I wouldn’t say we’ve forgotten- but I think we all can agree that TO this year has been different from who he’s been in the past…similar to how Giants fans felt about Coughlin last year to how they feel about him this year. People change and in the case of these two its exemplified in the product produced on the field…

It’s interesting that my post was completely deprecating and yet you still felt the need to try to throw me under the bus…

  40. Brandon Buchanan says:

    January 22nd, 2008 at 4:56 pm

Not trying to throw anyone under the bus. The fact about TO is he has not changed. People see what they want, and he certainly has not changed. He has not been faced with much adversity this year, whereas TC has faced tremendous adversity. Most Ginats fans feel the same way about him. Those who love him still do (as I was an original and current supporter) and those who want him gone still want him gone (although they appreciate where he has led this team of late). That’s the difference between the types of fans in NYG and DAL. I feel as though I can speak to this as I have been in North Texas (Arlington) my entire life, less college years (Waco).

To’s antics will continue, and one can hope he will mature and become the elite player he CAN be, in all aspects. Time will tell if that will happen, but I wouldn’t lose any sleep waiting for that time to come.

Df - the Giants started the whole super bowl hangover streak by going 7-9 after the 2000 season. I think it depends on what happens in the offseason. Let’s enjoy this for what it is we’ll have plenty of time to talk about all this in the offseason.

Here’s hoping Jacobs does to Rodney Harrison’s old roided up body what he did to Charles Woodson last week. WOO that was a hit!

Peter @ 32 - i appreciate your owning up. clearly there was a great deal of uncertainty coming into this season (lame duck head coach, new GM, new DC, new OC, new QB coach, new LT, new SLB, no Tiki, etc) and everyone had a different take on how it would all come together for the season. But you know, everything has finally come together and there is no question whatsoever that the NY Giants are one of the top 5 teams in the NFL (even Peter King has them ranked 2nd overall). The future is incredibly bright for this team regardless of the outcome of the Super Bowl. The pieces are in place (management, coaching, player talent and cap space) for this team to contend for the next 5 years. As a fan, it is OK to doubt, but in the end you have to BELIEVE.

Hey check this out! U wanna know how confident our players are Jeff Feagles was quoted that right before the coin flip Antonio pierce told him to lose the coin flip because he wasted the defense back on the field to stop Brett. Now that is one bold move by him and i know Feagles would have not done that on purpose but its nice to hear how confident these guys are and to hear the Lawerence Tynes running out on the field for the field goal before TC even thought about kicking it, He was still thinking about going for it on 4th down and Tynes was already lining up to kick now thats priceless. Tynes said the coach would have had to drag him off the field because he was not gonna miss the third one!!!!!!

Unlike after the 2001, I sincerely doubt that Reese is going to waste the entire draft by picking “My Two Wills” and Jesse “The Bachelor” Palmer. Although in defense of the 2001 team, I think those two one point losses to the Rams (14-15) and Philly (9-10) in midseason just killed the team. The second Philly loss as time wound down was the final nail.

This reminds me of 1980 living in South Jersey, Super Bowl Favorites Phila Eagles were up against the no chance Wild Card Okland/LA (can’t remeber which city that year?)Raiders. The Raiders even lost to Philly in the regular season; Jaws could do no wrong at QB, except, in the Super Bowl he was no match for the HEART the Raiders brought to the game. The underdog wild card team won convincingly.

Brandon, re: your comment on Owens

“TO is a whiny baby…he doesn’t deserve half the accolades he is given.”

You know that’s false. He is the real deal. He deserves all the accolades and more. He puts up monster numbers.

What he is besides the numbers is, he’s a shameless self-promoter. He likes to see his name all over the papers and he says stuff to get it there.

He goes way overboard sometimes. Like when he said Jeff Garcia was a homosexual. And thanks to that comment (intended to raise a little controversy on a slow news day), there are retards all over the sports world, including some on this messageboard, who refer to Garcia as a “faggot” and a “queer” solely based on TO’s say so. He also said that McNabb lost his manhood in the Super Bowl and McNabb actually had to explain himself because many people, some right here on this messageboard, took TO seriously. Go figure.

But leaving the controversy and the trash talk behind, TO is an elite wide receiver.

Dale, I read Staples Blog on Newsday. I liked how he slapped your comment down. You must be a real idiot to say the Giants were lucky to win in Grenn Bay. The Packers were the lucky ones. Thats the second time you said the Giants were lucky. No way your a Giants fan.

Am I the only one hoping the Giants go with a 3 CB/1 S set up when they are in the 4-3 formation? When the Patriots have 3 wide-outs Butler should be on the bench. I’m hoping Dockery is back by the time the Super Bowl rolls around because to me it seems like he has the best shot at covering Welker and sticking with him.
Which also makes you wonder, if Ross, Madison, Dockery and Webster are all healthy when the Super Bowl rolls around, who do you play? Do you give Webster, who has been playing great the past few weeks, the nod over Madison? Do you match each CB against a WR, and whichever WR is on the field dictates which CB is on the field? Is Dockery only on when Welker is on? Who is going to cover Moss; the redeemed bust, the solid vet who lost a step, or the rookie who though good has never covered anyone of this caliber?

TO is an Elite receiver?…I can give you 10 wideouts id rather have….MAYBE 15

Hes good, but very overrated, and I believe hes 33 or 34? Wont last much longer, esp when Romo screws up his chances at a ring again in 08.

  53. Dale Andersen says:

    January 22nd, 2008 at 9:06 pm

love the gmen, you ignorant country bumpkin,

You can’t give me 5, much less 10, receivers who can match TO.

Admit it, boy. You just don’t like him, You’re probably one of those low-rent white supremicists who thinks loud opinionated Afro-Americans have no place in the NFL.

Now let’s hear the names of those 10 wide receivers you know about who can match TO’s numbers, I dare you!

    Terrell Owens career

    Games - 173
    Receptions - 882
    Yards - 13070
    Yds per Recep - 14.8
    TDs - 129

2007, by the way, was his second-best year. That was just to point out he’s NOT slowing down.

    2007: 81 receptions for 1355 yards and 15 TDs.

love the gmen, I’m waiting, boy……..

  54. love the gmen says:

    January 22nd, 2008 at 9:37 pm

    Mr. Anderson….

Please, I’m not from the country nor ignorant, I live in the city. You did guess my skin color, nice job. Also, don’t call me boy I’m sure I’m older than you. And, if your going to call me a supremicist - why don’t you sp it correctly. Look it up Dale…

    Marvin Harrison
    Randy Moss
    Chad Johnson
    Steve Smith
    Tory Holt
    Reggie Wayne

Now, since I’m sure you have nothing to do and you’ll look up stats to prove I’m wrong…go for it. This is based on production, effort and lack of distraction IE TEAM PLAYER. CJ might be the only one on that list who may be looked at as a distraction, but you won’t find nearly a quarter of the stuff on him, that you would on your boy, Terrell Owens.

I have a question for you. TO ruined Jeff Garcia’s career, almost got Donovan Mcnabb run out of his own town and he recently cried over Tony Romo…but you want him on your team?

    Way off!

Owens is 3rd all time in TDs. And he’s not slowing down.

You forgot Isaac Bruce and Joey Galloway, by the way.

Your problem is, your receiver candidates have to pass a STFU litmus test before you’ll accept them. Which is why you’ll always be a loser. Example. Donald Driver is on your list. He’s been in the league for 8 years. He only has 38 TDs. Moss and Steve Smith only have 37. That sucks. TO has 129. He could pass Jerry Rice before he’s done.

I’ll bet you want Jeremy Shockey gone, because he won’t shut up. That’d be just like you.

Oh, and TO is a human piece of garbage. I have several Cowboy friends and they totally agree with me - but still root for him for obvious reasons. And if you feel the need to play the race card, 99% of the time, it is the accuser who is indeed racist.
GO BIG BLUE - time to wipe the smirk off another smarmy QB’s face.

Look I like intensity, I love those crazy guys on the field…I’m sry though, TO is just too much. I mean come on, he tried to off himself haha And then that time when he did sit ups or when he cried for his qb, or when he called his qb gay…dude, your right, I love TO

I sure wish I could get tickets for it. I am 56 years old now and I first got involved with the giants team when I was 8.Its been an amazing journey GOOD LUCK AND GOD BLESS

I love the fact that the Giants are getting picked on. When we went to the Tampa Bay game the Bucs fans were real quick to put Eli down. They hung dead Mannings and put us down. I loved that I walked out of Raymond James with my Giants jersey on. I smiled the entire walk back to my car. Tom Brady needs to get over himself. Stop playing games with the press, be a real father and he needs to have his head in the game. I hope Strahan eats him for dinner. I love being the underdogs. GO GIANTS!!
