Super Bowl Report Card

I hope you all are getting over the Super hangovers that we’ve all been fighting through today. They don’t seem as bad though when your team has just won the Super Bowl. So, do I still need to give this team grades? I mean, they just won the ultimate prize. No grade I give will be very meaningful. Ok ok, just for you guys.

Quarterback: A

“Eli! Eli! Eli!” shouts New Yorkers and all Giants fans. I can’t remember a playoff run where a quarterback has totally done a 180 from the regular season. Whatever happened to him, I hope it keeps up into next year. If Eli keeps playing like this, what’s to stop the Giants from repeating? Looking back a few years, I still remember leading his team to victory against the Dallas Cowboys in Texas Stadium. It was the last game of the season and the Giants had nothing to play for. After driving down to the goal line, Eli audibled a pass to a Tiki Barber run and won the game. It was a sign of things to come.

Running Backs: B+

One thing Brandon Jacobs and Ahmad Bradshaw did that won’t show up on the stat sheet was their pass blocking. There were quite a few times when someone on the Patriots’ defense was coming free. Instead of Eli getting creamed, Jacobs or Bradshaw would just stand the player up and not let him get close to their quarterback.

Wide Receivers: A+

Man, who would have thought that David Tyree would be making the play of the game? Unbelievable. And it looks like we may not only have our 3rd receiver for next season in Steve Smith, but our next number 2 receiver when Amani Toomer retires. Plaxico Burress had a pretty quiet game until catching an almost too easy game-winning touchdown. It will be interesting to see if he has any off-season sugery for his ankle or knee. Also, Toomer made one of his weekly toes-on-the-line catch. I hope he stays another season.

Offensive Line: A+

Great game by the offensive line. They out-performed the so-called #1 offensive line of the Patriots. Eli did a good job of avoiding some of the pressure, but the line made it a lot easier on him. They didn’t have the best run-blocking game, but they did more than enough to get the Giants a victory.

Defensive Line: A++++++++

What did you expect, really? The unit that’s carried this team the whole year unsurprisingly carried them to a Super Bowl victory. They absolutely tore apart one of the best offensive lines in the NFL. Justin Tuck played like an MVP for the first half and had the Patriots scrambling (literally). Isn’t nice to know we have him for 6 more years? Strahan, if he chooses, will be able to ride off into the sunset with the best victory of his career. What a game by these guys.

Linebackers: A-

The linebackers did an awesome job of containing the run. And other than Antonio Pierce’s pass interference in the end zone, he had a really good game. Kawika Mitchell had another strong game and will be getting a big payday soon (hopefully from the Giants).

Secondary: B+

I was so glad that Corey Webster had a chance to redeem himself after falling down on the touchdown to Randy Moss. He did so in knocking down a hail mary from Brady to Moss on their last drive. He, just like Eli Manning, showed remarkable improvement from the regular season to the playoffs. Kevin Dockery had a great game coming back from his injury. It actually seems as if this secondary will be good enough to not warrant any major additions or subtractions for next year.

Special Teams: A

They did what they needed to do and have been doing all season. Lawrence Tynes kicked the one field goal he was asked of and Jeff Feagles did his usual coffin corner punting.

Coaching: A+

The almost perfect execution from the players came from a totally perfect game plan. When did Kevin Gilbride start getting it? When did Tom Coughlin get everything together? When did Steve Spagnuolo figure out his team’s strengths? I guess it doesn’t matter when all of those things happened because they eventually did. The only sad thing that comes from this game is that Spagnuolo is most likely gone. But he deserves a head coaching job after the game plan he had for the juggernaut Patriots’ offense. It is unfortunate that he’ll most likely be going to a division rival in the Washington Redskins. Tom Coughlin will get an extension, if he wants one, and Kevin Gilbride will be our offensive coordinator for quite a while. I never thought I’d be saying those words after week 2 of this season.

Hey, check it out, someone at the NY Post spend about $400 to trademark the phrase “18-1″ before the game:

The backs get an A+ because they constantly and consistently picked up just about every blitz that the Pats threw at Eli. Remember back in the final game of the regular season, the Pats blitzed Eli in the 4th and got him to throw an INT. The coaching staff made the adjustment and focussed on getting this right. The coordinators knew that the running lanes would be closed down with all the blitzes so they didn’t push it. Heck, even Bradshaw reedemed himself by getting on the first fumble and knocking the second one away from the Pats defense.

Figure they can get at least a 3rd rounder for Shockey and they should be able to make a nice low round WR pickup in the draft.
Do you think the Gs would be able to trade Senorita Moss for a chalupa and a coupon for 50cents off a Coke?

I know that the great majority of Gmen fans are Shockey supporters, I myself fall into that group as well, but it cannot be denied that the team began to play significantly better once Shockey went down. Because of his injury and the ineffectiveness of Sinorice Moss, the coaching staff was forced to make the adjustment of incorporating Kevin Boss and Steve Smith (who was on the verger of being put on season ending I.R.) into the weekly game plan. Eli suddenly had two more receivers who ran their routes and (mostly) caught the balls thrown their way. This transition, more than anything else, in my opinion, is the reason why we suddenly had a productive effective and efficient QB. There was no sudden blossoming of Eli. He was always there, But he desperately needed some other outlets than an injured Plaxico and a drop-happy Toomer (whom I hope plays for a least 1 more year–I’ll never tire of those toe dragging sideline grabs) and so when Boss and Smith started performing in game - BINGO eli was able to show what he could do. I really am tired of all these pundits talking like he had some great transformation. Eli was already great. He just needed–like every great Qb– some consistency in his receivers. Eli is a great Giant QB. He was the first day he arrived, and he will be until the day he retires the BIG BLUE UNIFORM. Great trade Accorsi. Eat shit San Diego. Good luck with your weak armed punk ass bitch. I will love Eli til the day I die for what he gave me yesterday. One of the very best sports days of my life. Thanks Eli. Thanks NY Giants. And thanks to all the fans who didn’t give up!!! GO BIG BLUE

Look I love shockey as much as the next guy. I love his attitude and passion for the game and his intensity. Defense’s make game plans around this guy. butttttttt

He drops a ton of balls and doesnt run great routes, and hes often hurt.

Eli needs guys who can run crisp routes and make big plays without making everything flashy. Boss, smith, tyree…those are the guys we need going forward, they make plays and have very soft hands. Brady made gaffney branch brown all great receivers…Eli can do the same with these low level guys. We dont need chad johnson types…we need team players who understand that Eli is the leader of this team

Maybe we dont sign any of them but I’d be happy with any of these guys.—>

My Giants Free Agent Wish List

    Eriik Coleman, UFA, Jets
    Mike Doss, UFA, Vikings

    Wide Receiver—
    Drew Carter, UFA, Panthers

hey our secondary isnt as bad as it seems. Ross and Webster are starting to look like 2 solid corners for the future. A former 1st rd and 2nd round draft picks are starting to come together beautifuly. Wilson will be signed and is as solid as they come at S. Dockery is a great #3cb, he had a great game yesterday. I think Butler is gone…and believe it or not, I think Johnson will get a chance to start next yr. Hes big, fast and very physical.

Ross Webster Wilson Dockery and Johnson…all young playmakers for yrs to come.

maybe we wont go D in the 1st rd…maybe we’ll go OL or WR

What a playoff series, culminating in the most incredible playoff win in league history. It still doesn’t seem real… and to watch Terry up there sharing in the post game ceremony, after he and his cohorts picked the Bucs, picked the Cowboys, picked the Packers, and picked the Pats… not one of them after any of those “upsets” ever considered for a moment they were possibly wrong in their assessment of the Giants’ talent and playmaking abilities. One upset… ok… a fluke. Two… beating Dallas in Dallas? Still no thought given to reevaluating who the Giants are as a team. Three… Pack in Green Bay… still no hesitation on picking the Pats… wrong again boys. Wrong yet again. Giants don’t lose on the road after that opener… what the heck is it about the Meadowlands? Anyway, what a season. What a Super Bowl. Wonder where all the Eli haters will go… maybe to the Skins site… their QB’s yet to prove he’s a Super Bowl MVP, so they can declare open season on his rep. Eli, Tuck, David Tyree, Plax, Boss, Osi, Stra, Steve… team, thanks. This memory’s for life.

Giants will need to address their safeties, and perhaps find a speedy, smart linebacker. Gabril is going to be an UFA, and Butler is not going to cut it Michael Johnson looks more like a solid #3 safety as I’ve seen him out of position a bit too much (see the Super Bowl).

I’m sure they will re-sign Gabril, but I’ll take just about anyone from gianthinker’s list over James Butler. Being a New Englander, Eugene Wilson is probably the one I’d list as the top priority free agent due to familiarity.

Rik Sehgal, or Rick, or Ric:

You still have not answered my question. Are you hiding? I am convinced you are gutless. So the Giants would suffer from the 2 week layoff but the Pats would not be affected? How did you figure that? I believe you have a rosy future as a vacuum cleaner salesman because you don’t know jack about football. Actually, my suggestion would be an insult to vacuum cleaner salesmen. When are you going to admit you were dead wrong, Pal? Millions of Giants fans are waiting. Why do they even allow you to post on this site? No one cares about your grades. Go grade the Cowboys and Patriots.

  21. Pickett says:

    February 5th, 2008 at 10:02 am

Now that I’ve gotten that off my chest I feel a whole lot better. I just want to say that this victory is going to grow in scale as time passes. It is quite possible that this shattering defeat will create the impetus for New England making numerous changes, especially to an aging defense (delete Asante Samuel, too since New England will not pay him what he wants). It may take a while before they return to their current level of play but I could be totally wrong and they could conceivably rebuild on the fly. Remember how weak the AFC East is - probably among the 2 or 3 weakest divisions in football. As for the Giants, they have given us something we will never forget. I can live off this for years although I believe there are 1 or 2 more championships to come. They have also elevated themselves in the eyes of the football world and have gained enormous respect. What a feeling. As for the team, I was a big critic of Tom Coughlin, and Jerry Reese and for that I apologize. I leave it to them to make the decisions because for all time they have earned our respect and the right to do their jobs without the blogosphere going crazy over every decision and doubting every move they make. Reese had one of the greatest drafts in history and Coughlin did a truly great coaching job. It will be fun to speculate and watch what transpires in FA and the draft but let’s leave the player personnel decisions to the professionals. They have earned our trust. I have only one small request - find a way to retain Spagnuolo. Offer him the Asst. Head Coach position, pay him his dough, and let him know he is next in line.

BBQ Crow specials all week for all of the doubters and naysayers.

Seriously how could people that are obviously not fans of the New York Giants be allowed to post articles on a site that is most certainly meant for Giants fans. I am awfully unsure of the reasoning behind this.

If writers such as Rik, or Dale have nothing to say take a page from what your mothers probably told you and don’t say anything at all!! I mean picking “your favorite team” to lose while your peers picked them to win? So you hoped to be wrong? You are surely kidding me if you would like us all to believe you do not want to come off as the smartest of the bunch. How could you hope for the Giants to lose, and or lie to us. I am just offended.

Maybe when it is time to reconsider writers for Giants 101 different values should be considered besides punctuation, grammar, and spelling. I mean would you want someone writing often about the color of the sky when they really did not believe it was blue??

Happy as hell today, taking it all in and looking forward to watching the parade on my couch with some lunch and a big fat smile. I am having BBQ chicken, all of you doubters can have some crow.

We have to keep Spags! Plus why would Spags go the Redskins with that crazy owner and both coordinators have already been chosen for the Head Coach. Wow people. So Rik picked the Patriots over the Giants. How many millions upon millions of people did the same thing? Is it because he’s a Giants fan that your so angry? Like there weren’t hundreds of Giants fans out there that, although wanting their team to win, picked the Pats to be the victors. Is it because he post on a Giants website? So what. David Syverstein (is that how you spell it?) you know the former writer on this site, also picked the Patriots to win. Are you guys going to go over there and reem him some? Give the guy a break.

Where are Frank and and crew? With Eli’s run, EA big gamble paid off no?

    Moving forward:
    1) Resign Wilson
    2) Lock up Snee long term.
    3) Keep Shockey (you want good players in depth bone-heads). You can then use Shockey as a wide out as well!
    4) FA - lots of flexibility - due to the success of the youth on the team. LB is probably the area of interest - Consider retaining Kiwiki Mitchell if the price makes sense. How about a punter as Feagles is most assuredely going to retire? I would not spend stupid money in FA. Most of the team is locked up.
    4) Look for a LT in the draft, another CB, WR, G, S.

What will happen to RW and Ward? Probably gone. Sinorice - gone. Butler - gone.

I think you keep Madison one more year as he is still solid and invaluable grooming the younger players.

I also have a sneaking suspicion that Strahan comes back….they guy is in great physical condition, went injury free, loves to play, loves his Defensive teammates and stands to make $4 million - which after his divorce he needs. I think the team will cut him slack on preseason and in-season practice - hell it kept him in peak form….Strahan is still one of the best DEs in the league and still probably the best run stopping DE. His experience is irreplacable.

    Tom

I want to be the first to give a shout out to Kavika Mitchell. He’s been given a hard time and people already wrote him off and looked forward towards the draft for his replacement. Maybe we should draft someone but besides the first two games where he looked lost Mitchell played well for the rest of the year and if Reese decides to keep him around I’d be fine with that.

    No real Giant Fans.

    Yes.

    Yes.

    Yes.

Chris there weren’t hundreds of Giants fans out there (real fans) who picked their team to lose.
That is not what a true blue fan does. So do you waffle on your decisions, probably, and so that makes you feel bad for others who do as well?

  29. Muahaha says:

I am ashamed. I didn’t believe in the beginning of the year that this was possible. Going into the playoffs I began to believe but still I can’t deny my lack of faith especially with David Diehl. All i can say is wow, and thankfully that I was wrong.

MikeinVT: How dare you pretend to be better than Rik. I’ll have you know that Rik is such a passionate fan of the Giants HE’S WRITING ON THIS SITE.

According to you, a true blue fan needs to be dumb. He should pick the Giants to win every single time every year. He should think the Giants will go 19-0 every year.

It’s definitely a great thing to think, and fans SHOULD think that, but there is a difference between what a fan WANTS AND THINKS and … REALITY!

THERE IS NOTHING WRONG WITH NOT PICKING THE GIANTS TO WIN. HE WANTED THEM TO WIN. THAT’S WHAT MATTERS.

STOP being so vindictive and try to enjoy the victory.

    For crying out loud.

I don’t understand Giants’ fans love affair with Shockey. He is the most over rated player in the league. He runs poor routes. He consistently drops passes he should catch. For as big as he is he should be punishing tacklers. Instead he’s always being punished by tacklers, not only LBs but DBs too. Here’s the main reason why I don’t like him as a Giant. He cares more about his college teammates than he does his present teammates. He cares more about Shockey than he does the Giants. He should be part of the off season program with his Giants’ teammates not his college alum friends in Miami.

Every so often he’ll have an inspirational catch and run. People get excited as if he’s the second coming of Bavaro. Not even close.

    This is the best one:

WHAT DID “YOU” EXPECT? YOU EXPECTED THE PATS TO SCORE 31 POINTS. CAN YOU COUNT? 31 POINTS..ON “YOUR” TEAM.

    COACHING:

    1) Pay Spags! Groom him to replace Coughlin. Never let him go! Look what Garrett got in Dallas and they didn’t even win a playoff game.

    2) Trade Shockey. He is locker room cancer. The fact that wasn’t on the sidelines with his teammates during the super bowl and was unsure if he would EVEN ATTEND THE GAME SAYS IT ALL. Trade him to the AFC get what we can for him. He has retarded Eli’s growth long enough.

    3) Re-sign Gerbil and add a Safety that can cover and play centerfield–preferbly through the draft.

    4) Lock up Coughlin’s son-in-law.

which tells me that one or two plays different the GIANTS fans would be saying -well , at least it was a good competitive game , and we would be comparing stats on how we should have WON
I think a TRUE GIANT FAN would have bet the Giants
straight up with the odds -OR EVEN TRUER FAN
which I think I read someone did -was bet the Giants
early on in the season TO WIN IT ALL
That my friends is a GIANT GIANT FAN

LMAO. Ric you have my E-Mail you are welcome to reply directly to it. You deserve a grade of F (failure to be a true believer). You are an insult to this site and a poor fan and a worse analyst. Like I have responded to your post in the past, I once again say with comfort GOOD BYE!!! We do not need your kind on Giants web sites. LOOOOSER. Do not take it personly just leave, and don’t let the door hit ya were the Lord split ya.

Shockey is gone.. the last thing you want to upset is team chemistry. He is a cancer, he is not that good and he will continue to set this team back if he’s on the roster next year. Boss can be a top tier TE and the Gs need to think about developing talent like this, not some jagoff who can’t run a route, short arms passes and then chews out the QB.

Well said about the defense who delivered this win! And, yes, it was Plaxico who had the game-winning catch, but it was David’s catch, the “Catch in the Hat”, that will give all of football (not just us Giants fans), a lasting legacy, along with the “Immaculate Conception”, “The Catch” and the “Music City Miracle”.
