New York Giants GM Reese glanced over, still shines
Jerry Reese has done an incredible job turning potential into a winner, and he has done that several different ways. He cut his losses with problematic players, trimmed the roster of injury-plagued players, and even fought for his coaching staff and brought on great assistants. Most importantly, he assembled one of the best and most influential draft classes in New York Giants history.
After a disappointing 8-8 season (and first round exit in the playoffs), The New York Giants were in disarray. The star running back, Tiki Barber, was cleaning out his locker for the first time, sackmaster Michael Strahan was gallivanting around California and contemplating retirement with Eddie Murphy’s ex-wife, and Tom Coughlin was trying to prove why he should have a job in 2007. This was a soap opera, and Jerry Reese welcomed it with open arms and cleaned house. He made priorities and decisions that the front office trusted him to make, and his work ethic of perfection paid off handsomely.
So after that massive turnaround, one must ask: “What more do you have to do to be acknowledged by your peers as the Top Executive in Football?”
Well, there are a lot of politics involved with these votes. The award is chosen by fellow executives, and Reese simply lost the popularity contest. Packers GM Ted Thompson, was the recipient of the “George Young Executive of the Year” and he did some great things last season. However, what Reese was able to accomplish, in his first year, far outshadows the rebuilding job that led to Packers to a 13-3 season. I would think, if two GMs were evenly matched and there was a relative tie, your vote would be with the GM that assembled a team that won the Super Bowl.
Other News:
As you know, Pac Man Jones (CB) has begun to lobby hard to land in Dallas. He has reached out to Jerry Jones in a rather gushing interview with Michael Irvin in a radio interview. Pac Man is a great player, but a classless guy should fit right in with a classless organization. Jerry, get out your pen.
Draft talk is heating up, and this will be a fun draft to watch. There is depth at several spots, but I think this draft class will largely be a flop. This will be one of those drafts that yields not many big time players, rather roster fillers. My opinion may not be a popular one, but I challenge you to follow the 2008 Draft Class, and if I am wrong in 3 years, I will buy you a beverage of your choice.
Regarding Rich Seubert’s extension, this is a great signing because not only does it provide solid depth on the offensive line, but it shows what the New York Giants are all about. If you put it all on the line for them, they will reward you, and that is exactly what Seubert has done since becoming a New York Giant. His extension also plays with the salary cap a little bit, and as you may know, extensions usually lower a team’s cap number. More room for Plax, Osi, or Snee? Better believe it.
Finally, on a personal note, I would like to let all our readers that some exciting news transpired for me over the Easter Weekend. I proposed to my girlfriend, and we are now engaged. As you can imagine, this is a very exciting time for us right now. She is a smart, beautiful girl, but most importantly, she is 4 year newly-minted Giants fan.

Just when I thought you had stopped writing, here you are…haha
congrats on the GIANT wedding.
Also check your email…I’m working on a mock draft and was hoping that mvn’s writers and readers could help me out with it, by creating draft boards for your favorite teams.
I sent you an email with a file attachment but since then I’ve made some corrections to the file, so I would need to send the updated file out to you.
Thanks
Mike

I think that there will be some top talent out of this draft (McFadden, Dorsey) but generally it is weak.
QB - very weak
RB - good but not great
TE - weak
WR - weak
OL - ok
DE - ok
DT - good
LB - weak - no real standouts here
S - weak
CB - deep, but no real standouts
If the Giants can trade their #1 for a #1 next year (presumably higher than last) should they do it?

As WC Fields used to say, “marriage is a wonderful institution… if you like institutions.”

What does your engagement have to do w/ Giants football?? What Giant fan cares?? Why do you think this is going to be a poor draft?? Have you studied each of the 350 + players that are participating? Or are you just talking out of your arse???
March 27th, 2008 at 12:55 pm
had to see that one coming Brandon…

ny92mike-
I didn’t get your email. Try it out again. Yea, I have been MIA for a while, I work in elections, so it has been a crazy time for me down in Texas, as you can imagine.
Matthew Cohen-
I think the OL and CB class might surprise a few people. I really the OL is where the talent will come from this year.
Hamspear -
I love you too. Thanks for reading and showing us what a “Real Giants fan” cares about.

Dude, Dont do it, do any of us married guys really look happy??!!!!! Same pussy for the rest of your life, way to think this one through!!
March 27th, 2008 at 5:11 pm
Not to get too off-topic but did anyone catch former Giants fullback Jarrod Bunch on CSI:Miami this week? He played a body-guard to a ball player. He wasn’t half bad either (at least I could watch him without throwing up in my mouth, which is more than I can say for a certain NBC “Today” co-host).

CONGRATS BB!!! They just gave Ted Thompson that award as a consolation prize.I’m sure JR would take the ring over the paper awards every time.We all know who the man is.

You want to know what I absolutely love about coming to this site….beyond the obvious news and comments about my team……
I LOVE THAT THE SUBERBOWL SCORE IS SITTING THERE ON THE RIGHT SIDE OF THE PAGE AND HAS BEEN THERE FOR 3 MONTHS AND WILL BE THERE UNTIL THE SEASON BEGINS.
I just love coming here and looking at that damn score. Giants 17 - Patriots - 14
I am not over it. I am still totally juiced over this “suprise” Super Bowl Championship season. I almost dont want the next year to begin
March 28th, 2008 at 9:38 am
Congrats man!! Hey I know Pacman is classless, but alot of fans would like to hear what Jerry Reese actually has to say about him, and why the Giants aren’t trying to pursue him.
March 28th, 2008 at 9:50 am
Relatively weak draft class? Perhaps, but if Jerry Reese is the talent evaluator we think he is, he should thrive in this environment. This sounds like the kind of year that being up at the top of the draft 1-10 is more of a burden than a blessing. Part of the fun will be looking back at the teams at the top that screwed up. Reminds me of the Jets giving up the farm to draft Dewayne Robertson who turned out to be a stiff or the Atlanta Falcons Aundray Bruce saga. These types of errors do harm over several seasons.

Congrats Brandon!
it makes your life whole, a happy wife a happy life
take care

It looks like we will have an additional 5th round pick this year. Time for Reese to add some more depth.
