Giants 101

A problem looming?

Rumors have been swirling around all off-season about how some of the Giants players were unhappy with their current contracts. Everyday we get closer to training camp and in this time period before the draft the players are going to become more disgruntled with each day passing.

The biggest problem with this is that it is 3 very key players that seem to want new contracts. These players would be Chris Snee, Osi Umenyiora and Plaxico Burress. Now the most important of these three players to extend in my opinion would be Chris Snee because he is in the last year of his contract and is the best player on our offensive line. This is not to say that making sure Osi and Plax don’t hold out is not important, but that Snee’s situation is much more imminent because he is going to be a free agent after this season and we have all seen the ridiculous money thrown at average guards in years past. Snee would get huge money if he were to hit the open market and this is why the Giants need lock him down now.

Osi Umenyiora’s situation is a little bit more complex. As most of you remember Osi received a contract extension not to long ago, so why is he asking for a new contract now? Well I guess saying that he likes money would be a little too obvious. Now I am not in Osi’s head but I have to guess that he wasn’t too happy with Justin Tuck getting paid more than him when he hasn’t accomplished as much in this league as he has. The Giants set a dangerous precedent with that contract because now Osi is going to have to receive similar money as well as Strahan if he comes back this year. Not to mention when it is time for Kiwanuka to receive his extension in a couple years he is going to demand similar money. I Believe Osi Umenyiora deserves a bit of a pay raise and hopefully the Giants handle this before Osi decides to hold out in training camp.

The Plaxico Burress situation has been quieter than the other two, but I feel that he deserves a little bit more than he is making. Plax is a top 10 receiver in this league yet guys like Bernard Berrian and Javon Walker are getting paid huge money in free agency and Plaxico has a relatively cheaper contract.

All these Giant players have a legitimate beef with their current contracts and should get paid a little bit more. However, will the Giants have enough money to pay all of them? ESPN has the New York Giants with 9.4 million under the current cap. With the cap continuing to go up and rumors of their being no cap at all in the near future I think the Giants need to take care of their own and do it quickly.

We need to give all three extensions. Snee is a star and more than likely a top 5 guard in the league and does not get recognized for it. Burress put everything on the line this year HURT!!! without him we didnt make it in the playoffs now with him and manning getting better every year together and him healthy he is going we need to lock him up. Osi cant be greedy he wanted and extension a few years ago and he got it but now that tuck got one he thinks he deserves one not saying he doesnt deserve one but it cant be all about him.

Osi’s two years into a 6 year contract, with the first 3 paying 7 million a year. 18 million is guaranteed. He has nothing to complain about. Play with his current contract for another year or two AND THEN start checking out what other DEs are making. No new contract for you, Osi U!!!!

One more thing Sean, nobody under contract has a legitimate beef WITH THE POSSIBLE EXCEPTION of rookie contracts. Rookie contracts are for the most part dictated by the current collective bargaining agreement. Example, Marcus Coulston in New Orleans has clearly outperformed his rookie contract which is still in effect and deserves a new deal. If a player is playing under a contract that was signed AFTER his rookie contract, he should shut up and play.

Osi’s current contract is more than fair when you consider the following:

    1. Played only 11 games in 2006
(6 sack year, on pace for 8)
    2. Was not consistent with his play this year
(6 sack in 1 game, 7 in the other 15)
    3. His contract pays him $21 Million over the first 3 years

NFL contracts are worth little more than the paper they’re written on, but guaranteed money is the key. Maybe guaranteeing more money in Osi’s 6 year deal is what it would take to make him happy for a couple more seasons…

Snee needs an extension / new deal immediately. Why not lock up a cornerstone of the offense now before a team like the Raiders gives him boatloads of funny money next offseason? They wouldn’t be able to match those ridiculous offers. Maybe they’re waiting to see what the draft has in store. You never know if they’ll be trading away some talent (Shockey) or what their 1st round pick will command.

Burress’s contract does seem small compared to others of arguably the same or lesser talent. Reworking the deal to give him a raise or more guaranteed moneyis not out of the question for what he has meant to the offense. They might be able to get through one more year on this one, though, before having to commit to a restructured deal. I’d like to see what he could do healthy - he disappeared for too many stretches of time last year to be called “reliable”, but he was GREAT when it counted.

Osi needs to suck it up and just play ball. He is getting paid his fair share and still more than Justin Tuck.

    Osi’s Contract: 6year $41mil with $18mil guarenteed.
    Tuck’s Contract: 5year $30mil with $16mil guarenteed.

I also think that Tuck can easily be just as good as Osi once he is given a full time spot.

Snee NEEDS an extension to his contract. He is a very good player and our line is a solid unit. They play very well together especially in the run where they helped our backs to average over 4 yards per carry.

Plax is a great WR who has so many good traits. I do think that he should get more money for what he has done for this organization but he is on the down swing of his career. He has had a few injuries over the past few years and I dont think this will change as he gets older. Unfortunately I think it might be time (within the next season or two) where we should search for a tall WR with a similar skill set to replace, or at least fill in, when Plax is injured. This years draft has a lot of high rated WR’s that are 6′3″ or taller. I can see another 2nd round WR pick in the Giants future.

I believe strahan’s current deal has him signed for 2008, other wise he would be listed as a free agent. He is making $4 million this year and likely receiving a roster bonus of $500,000.

Burress’s base salary for the next three seasons is $3.25, $3.50, and $3.75 million. Add to that his pro rata share of signing bonus (1.6 mill per season) and his cp number is about $5 mill per season. That is relatively cheap for a player of his caliber.

Snee is signed through 2009 but his contract is voidable after this season. The void details were not reported or at least i dont think they were. I dont know if he as the option to opt out or not. Either way they need to give him an extension. His cap number including the signing bonus is about $1 million each season.

Looking at shockeys contract I dont think the Giants will trade him before the draft because it will squeeze out some of their cap room if they do. His 2008 cap number is $4.583 million. If they trade him before 06/01 he would count $5.7 million against the cap. Once you factor in the salary of the player to replace him your looking at a loss of close to $1.5 million in cap space. If they traded him after 06/01 he would count $2.6 mill against this years cap and $3.6 mill against the 09 cap. So they would save $1.983 mill in cap space this year (his base pay) but take a hit next year for the remainder of his signing bonus.

I think the Giants should cut Mcquarters as because he is making $3.1 million in a backup role. They would save $2.5 mill in cap room if they did.

I can’t find any site that shows 2008 nfl player salaries but here is a link that shows his 2007 salary at $3 million.

    http://msn.foxsports.com/nfl/teamSalary?statsId=19

Anyway his 2008 base salary is $2.525 million. He signed a 3 year contract in 2006 with a $1.8 million dollar signing bonus. $600,000 of the signing bonus counted against the 2006 cap and $600,000 against the 2007 cap. That leaves $600,000 against the 2008 cap.

    $2.5 + .6 = $3.1 million

If you release mcquarters you lose the bonus portion of the salary but save the base salary.

    Here’s my problem.

    http://content.usatoday.com/sp.....;year=2007

This site shows his salary at 1.5 in 2007 (cap number of 2.1) not the numbers your link shows.

I’d also question that 13+ mil salary for David Carr.

His number via the website I posted have his 2007 salary as 1 mil, 3 mil signing bonus, ~4 mil total salary, ~3.3 cap number for 2007.

Osi shouldn’t get a single dime more than his current contract until he can show the rest of us how he can handle left tackles not named Winston Justice. And he kinda sucks against the run too.

Lock up Snee, and extend his contract for sure. He has earned it. Same goes for Plax. Osi needs to show more consitancy, and honestly, Tuck has been more of an impact player. Osi has nothing to complain about with his current contract.

I am sick of all the Tuck talk, its usually done by people who oonly look at stats and dont understand the game. Tuck had 10 sacks last year! Omg, almost all his sacks come from the inside when spags used him as a dt, he was never blocked, or went against a very slow and weak int lineman, thats because they stack the line against who OOOSSSSIIIIII! this is common knowledge to anyone who coaches or plays the game like me (in college), thats why u never hear a coach or player talk about tuck! it’s usually commentators or fans, tuck is not and never will be a premier pass rusher, he will be a great run stopper and an average pass rusher. He is not a home run threat or game changer like osi, who in the NFL is the most feared pass rusher next to freeney, and Oh he’s only making 1.7 mil this year and the next and is the 31st ranked in salary amongst DE’s in the league. Those are the facts.

These developments should not come as a surprise to anybody. They won the whole thing and now people want to get paid. It’s part of the challenge for Jerry to navigate and negotiate and get it all taken care of prior to going to Albany. The saga with Strahan during camp didn’t kill us because the coaching staff and management did a great job of convincing everyone to concentrate on just football and don’t worry about the off-field stuff. They will be challenged with doing that very same thing again. That being said, I’m hopeful all 3 players discussed in the Blog would be taken care of and we can then focus on the only thing that matters: REPEATING!!!!

    Mike,

I can’t believe your comment on Tuck. I really can’t. Did you watch the Superbowl Dude??? Come on. Is Osi better?? yes. But Tuck is really good dude.
Bottom Line is what makes them both there very best and that they play together on the same team. Our Team!!! Would you rather he play for another team??

Osi is a solid player but he signed his contract and that is the chance you take signing an extension early in your career. He has five years left on his deal, that would be a cap killer to escalate him now. Talk to him after 2009, if he wants to sit until then, go ahead the Giants are deep at DE. Only a bonehead would throw out his chance to play in the NFL when he will make at least 35 million though the next five years.

He is a good player that looks better with Stray always getting double teamed. He looks good when the giants play well but disappears for several games at a clip, and is non existent when they struggle. He has developed into a well rounded pass rusher not just a wide loop guy. Tuck is already the guy that can play like Stray and can play 3 out of 4 positions on the line. Osi is limited to RDE because of his attitude and size. His run defense is better than most speed rushers (Kearse, KGB, Freeny, Rice) but Tuck is better. In the NFC championship against Green Bay Tuck played a lot of snaps at RDE on running downs. Once GB abandoned the run Osi came in at RDE and Tuck slid over to the 3 tech DT.
