Final Giants Draft Thoughts
We have speculated for months. We have watched college football, the senior bowl, the combine and draft coverage. We have debated pretty much every draft eligible prospect at one point or another. Tomorrow is finally the big day. Let’s talk Giants draft.Â
- Is this Jeremy Shockey’s last night as a Giant? It sure could be, if one of the interested teams offers enough tomorrow. I wrote a lengthy post on this last time, so I am just going to say this. Saints, Seahawks and Falcons - if you want a Pro Bowl playmaking tight end, now is the time to pony up.Â
- With the 31st pick, I am still picking Tyrell Johnson of Arkansas State. I think he will be a better pro than Kenny Phillips as I have documented before. This is my trade free Giants only mock draft. This is best case scenario, a dream draft:
- Round 1 (31)Â - Tyrell Johnson, S - Arkansas State
- Round 2 (63) -  Trevor Laws, DT - Notre Dame
- Round 3 (95)Â - Erin Henderson - OLB, Maryland
- Round 4 (130)Â - Keenan Burton - WR, Kentucky
- Round 5 (165)Â - Orlando Scandrick - CB, Boise State
- Round 6 (194)Â - Robert Felton - OG, Arkansas
- Round 6 (198)Â - DJ Hall - WR, Alabama
- Round 6 (199) - Jameel McClain - DE, Syracuse
I realize that the Giants would need more than a few breaks to have this draft, and I’m sure I’ll get destroyed in the comments field. This is a best case scenario. I did select the players within the area where I project them to be drafted. I did have Trevor Laws slide a bit, but the fact that he had 112 tackles as a DT last season makes me want to see him in blue. You can substitute him with Pat Sims from Auburn. I was also about to pick Duane Brown - OT, Va Tech in round 3 but it was about 10 picks after his draft projection. I love Erin Henderson anyway. Man I am pumped up for tomorrow. Rip me, I’m cool with it.  Â
- I expect the Giants to leave this draft with a safety, a linebacker, a pass rushing defensive tackle (some names to keep in mind are Laws, Sims, Fluellen, Moore) a wide receiver, a corner, and a tight end. The other picks could really be any position. Depth is key. Â
- I could see value being more important than need is to Jerry Reese, since the Giants really do not have a lot of needs. Â
- Osi Umenyoria will not hold out and will report to training camp!!!
- The Saints are now offering the tenth overall pick and possibly 2006 Pro Bowl Offensive Tackle Jamaal Brown to move up and draft either Glenn Dorsey or Sedrick Ellis. Good idea. Give up a starting tackle to move up a few spots. I am being sarcastic. The rumor is that the Chiefs would give up the fifth pick to move back to the tenth pick and add Jamaal Brown. The Saints would then draft Sedrick Ellis at fifth overall. The Chiefs would use the 10th selection on Florida DE Derrick Harvey.
- The Carolina Panthers are seriously trying to move up in order to draft BC QB Matt Ryan. I am not sure what they are offering or who they are dealing with yet.
- Atlanta’s dream first round would be drafting Dorsey at third overall and then trading back into round one and drafting Louisville QB Brian Brohm. This is possible, because Atlanta has three second rounders.
- Expect Leodis McKelvin to be the first corner off of the board tomorrow. Personally I do not like the fact that he has no hands. After suffering through the Will Allen years, when dropping picks was an art form, I only like DBs with hands.Â
- Enjoy the draft everyone! I will be at a draft party (the keg-o-rater is the key) and I hope you all are doing the same. Check the site, because Sean and I will be updating it with our thoughts on the GMen and the draft in general.Â
- GO BIG BLUE!!!

I am liking the Johnson pick as well but I hope Tracy Porter is available for the 2nd pick, also OSI is the man I put the article on the last post comments page what a stand up guy you can tell he doesn’t have Drew Rosen A-hole as an agent. Its funny how #85, Shockey and now even A. Boldin all want out of there situations or more money and there is only one common factor . . . good ole Drew.

i am a transplanted giants fan living in california. my two cents for their pick would be desean jackson. i know he might not be available but in many mock drafts he only goes 1 to 4 picks higher so you never know. i would not count on him as a receiver anytime soon but this guy is a game-breaking punt returner. amazing! would give the giants a devin hester like weapon that few teams have. he would be the best athlete available. and maybe if we are lucky in 2 or 3 years he could develop into a #2 or #3 receiver. there would be no better value with the #31 pick.

I like the picks Rich, but I dont see us reaching for Johnson with #31. I honestly believe Phillips will still be there and I believe from reading other reports that the giants are high on him and I think they’ll take him first. Laws would be great for a second pick but not sure he’ll be there and I think JR will look to take a LB or OL in the second, instead of waiting. A DT from a later round can probably be groomed by Spags to be helpful in 09 season. We’ll still have Robbins this season, so not a huge rush on it. I think CB might come earlier than the fifth, but I do think Scandrick is a good prospect.

I am SO glad to see that I am not the only Trevor Laws fan out there. In fact, having seen his ridiculously good workout and great personality on YouTube, I would do WHATEVER I could to get him, even draft him at #31. What a dynamic character…I could see him hitting it off and fitting in well with Strahan, Osi, Kiwi and Tuck along the defensive line. Please, Giants, draft him somewhere…

The more I look at it, I am a big supporter of the Giants drafting Quinten Groves at 31. He projects well to strong side linebacker, and could work on a rotation with Kiwi. Also, both Kiwi and Groves could work in at DE. I am concerned Strahan will retire or get hurt, and we have some depth issues at DE. This pick appears to address 2 needs.
I also like Adarius Bowman as a late round target at WR. He’s about 6′4″ and flying a little under the radar for his natural talents. He could fall to us in the 3rd-4th round range.
Also, Tyler Polumbus is a good sleeper late pick at OT.

hey man- you have got to stop worrying about what people say. i feel like every post has a preface “you guys are going to rip me for this but….” i
f they don’t like it they will stop reading, so chill, right?

In all honesty I feel something coming tomorrow, Tyrell Johnson or Kenny Philips will be a giant either we move up for philips or let him fall.. if we dont do that i BET money that we will move down and take Johnson in the mid to upper 30’s picking up an extra 2nd round pick. AND shockey will be traded that is the rumor im hearing from people who are close with shockey, believe me or dont believe me i can care less, but my girl lives next to him and he has been telling me for months that he wants a trade and he has talked to other teams and it will probably happen so dont be ’shocked’… If we have 3 2nd round picks I see it going something like this.
2. Tyrell Johnson S
2. Tracy Porter CB
2. Erin Henderson OLB
3. Dre Moore DT
4. Paul Hubbard WR
5. Martin Rucker TE
6. Oline Depth
6. BPA
6. BPA
I would do cartwheels if that happened because i see 4-5 potential pro bowlers in the future. Johnson is just a stud, Henderson plays like his older bro he will be a lock in our LB corps for years, Tracy porter is a great return man and CB, Dre moore will be boom or bust, and i dont know why martin rucker fell so far in projections but he will be a stud i watched all his games because i followed missouri he will be a great pass catching TE in the pros.

hahaha, sizz you’ve got a point man. I must sound like a whimp.
I was actually thinking about putting Polumbus in the mock, but took someone else in round 6 instead.
I think Groves fits best in the 3-4. I am hearing Pitt or San Fran will take him before us anyway. A converted DE from Auburn scares me, makes me think of Reggie Torbor, eventhough we all know Groves has more talent. You want to go out there with Groves, Kiwi, Tuck, Strahan and Osi on the field at the same time? We have greater needs.
April 25th, 2008 at 3:28 pm
i think the Giants will trade their 1st Round pick to the Falcons for their second 2nd Rounder (37th overall) and their 4th Rounder. then the Giants select Tyrell Johnson with the 6th Pick of the 2nd Round.
why does everyone think trading away the last pick in the first round is worth two second rounders? if you’re using the value chart then you see that the first few picks in the second round plus a 5th rounder equal the 31st pick. then the mid-second rounders plus a 4th round pick equal the 31st.

Brandon Flowers (madison)
Trevor Laws (Penetrating Smart DT)
Chris Ellis (strahan)
Calais Campbell (tuck)
Antoine Cason (madison)
Peyton Hillis (versitility)
all 6 we have a decent shot at drafting & would develop nicely in the giants systems. If we are able to land even one of them i’ll be satisfied. Well, maybe not w/ just Hillis.
Rich - I know you looking forward to having your first orgasm & all, but the giants “ain’t a pickens” no Tyrell Johnson @ 31. But in the off chance they do… i’ll shave my balls in your honor lol. Your 100% right on Will Allen by the way. Great leader. Good cover guy. Couldn’t make a play to save his life.

I’m not sure why curtis lofton doesn’t get more att. As a giants fan the no. 1 priority for me is to get more talented in the LB pos. He looks like an absolute stud on highlight films. just look at his strength on taking on blockers. So I would like, and I know I can’t get them all, but maybe 2 players from this group in some way.
1. Curtis Lofton
2.Brandon Flowers (CB or S)
3.Tyrell Johnson (- never saw clips, just based on what I read)
4.Mario Manningham (If he drops- he looks like he got real talent)
5.Patrick Lee (sounds like a sleeper)
6.Xavier Adibi (If we can’t get Lofton- looks like a typically immature VT guy, but looks talented and passionate)
April 25th, 2008 at 5:01 pm
1st Round - CB Antione Cason, CB DRC, LB Jerod Mayo, LB Curtis Lofton, S Kenny Phillips
2nd Round - CB Tracy Porter, S DaJuan Morgan, S Tyrell Johnson, LB Beau Bell, CB Antwaun Molden
3rd Round - WR Dexter Jackson, OL Jeremy Zuttah
Late Rounders - CB Jack Ikegwuonu, OT Barry Richardson CB Orlando Scandrick, DT Keilen Dykes, S Dowayne Davis, OT Corey Clark, DT Frank Okam.
If one of those guys was picked I’d be happy. If two of them were picked, I’d be grinning like a fool for a couple of days. If three of those guys were picked I’d probably blow a load.
April 25th, 2008 at 5:12 pm
I think Tyrell Johnson would be a good pick, but remember, in all the Shockey trade talks we are being offerred offered a safety in return. So if we make the deal for Shockey, we won’t need to draft a safety, we can get CB or LB. I would love to trade shockey, get a safety from the Saints or Bills, then grab a Jerod Mayo or whichever elite CB is left. thoughts?
April 25th, 2008 at 6:10 pm
Pro Football Weekly reports a deal may be in place for Shockey to go to the Saints for “multiple picks”, including their 2nd rounder (40th overall).
I got this from TSN website. I am conflicted about this. I guess if it’s a 2nd and 3rd would be the minimum I’d be content with, but I was kind of hoping to strengthen a position in addition to the pick or picks we’d be getting (like Harper at the Safety spot).
Looks like one of the “multiple picks” will be spent on a TE. I’ve heard there’s not much out there. Any good ones available in the early to mid rounds?
April 25th, 2008 at 6:18 pm
Apparently the TE class is solid but no one elite. Dustin Keller, Fred Davis, Martellus Bennet, John Carlson, Martin Rucker and Brad Cottam. All of them are suppose to be good 2nd-4th Round picks.
April 25th, 2008 at 6:49 pm
rumor has it that the a trade between the Saints and Giants is on the table. Jeremy Shockey for the Saints 2nd Rounder (#40) and two late Rounders.
now its up to the Saints to decide if they want Shockey, or they want to move up from the #10 spot to get Dorsey (Rams at #2, Falcons at #3) or Ellis (Pats at #7, Bengals at #8)
April 25th, 2008 at 9:10 pm
I have always been a Jeremy Shockey fan, but if he wants out, and we can get significant value for him…lets do it! I certainly wouldn’t trade a talent like Jeremy Shockey just for the sake of trading him, but if we are talking about a first rounder, or a second, plus significant late rounders, we have to do it.

I’m telling you guys, Antoine Cason is being mad underrated. I really feel like he’s going to be a stud in this league, and that’s one of the reasons I think you’re not hearing about him that much. For some reason I’m scared that Green Bay is going to pick him right before the Giants do, and I’m also pretty certain now that Mayo is not going to last until the 31st pick.
If neither of those guys last that far, I’m down for drafting Phillips or Johnson, both of those safeties look pretty solid.
April 25th, 2008 at 10:10 pm
Well, the word is out
According to “several” scouts and coaches, Arkansas State’s Tyrell Johnson will be the first safety drafted on Saturday.
Kenny Phillips of Miami is expected to go second. DaJuan Morgan (NC State) and Thomas DeCoud (Cal) could be next in line. Johnson could reportedly go as high as Philadelphia at No. 19 overall, according to two team officials.

I’m going to throw in my predictions for this draft. First, the Giants will go BPA in the first round, depending on how the draft in front of them shakes out. They may target a safety, but will take Phillips only if he is BPA at #31. But I don’t think that will happen. I think the Giants will take a DB in round two, and the first round choice will not be in the secondary after taking a DB in round one last year. I think Shockey gets traded for a second round choice and a loaf of bread. I think the Giants will walk away with LB depth, a DB, an OT, and a WR.
On an unrelated note, I predict Glenn Dorsey is the DT version of John Abraham-talented but limited to a few games a season because of constant injuries. The team that drafts him is going to regret it in 3 years. Jake Long is going to be looked at as better than he actually is in his career because of his high draft status. He will be solid, but not worth the #1 pick this year. Matt Ryan is going to be a poor man’s Alex Smith, and will be nowhere near as good as his draft position. The best QB from this draft will be someone who is not currently being hyped, kind of like in 2005 when the best QB ended up being Derek Anderson. I predict the best player from this draft is a guy who gets drafted in the teens and is not getting all the hype of the top guys. I also think there will be some very good running backs from this draft. My last prediction is that, even three years later, so called “draft experts” still will have no idea what the hell they are doing: http://sports.espn.go.com/nfl/.....id=3333998
I also predict that while the Giants may not repeat the success of the ‘07 draft, they will still end up with one of the best drafts in football when we look back a few years from now (and ignore the utter stupidity of grading a draft after it happens, which essentially is grading the how teams responded to media hype rather than whether the teams did a good job or not).

Although I think it is difficult to determine who the Giants will pick , I think you have addressed all
of the Giants needs except offensive tackle. Clearly, I think the Giants need to add depth at the tackle position.
I think the Giants need to find a younger guy to back up O’Hara at center. Can the guy Felton out of Arkansas play center?

Has any one else heard the latest Shockey scuttlebutt…the Saints trade their 2nd round pick to the Eagles for Lito Sheppard…Saitnts then trade Lito to the G-men straight up for Shockey. I for one like this scenario; we keep all our picks, pick-up a pro-bowl caliber CB…as good if not better than any CB currently on the roster and do the right thing by Shock by granting his wish to be reunited with Sean Payton…sounds good to me!
April 26th, 2008 at 7:56 am
Keep up the good work Rich
Chris of LI has the right idea. Last pick in round # 1 is close to mid 2nd rounder where it concerns the Giants needs.
If Phillips is there at 31 they take him. Otherwise the Falcons want the pick and they swap.
I still like the versatility of Reggie Smith.
Shockey goes. He is a malcontent. Talented but prob not worth the hassle. But Harper is a SS and they need a FS.
Whatever happened to the idea of RW or Webster flipping over to FS? Sounds odd but CBs have done it before.
April 26th, 2008 at 8:46 am
I would love to see the Giants land Safety Kenny Phillips in the first round. We could finally have a difference maker back there. Then, possibly with two second rounders (Shockey trade??), we could land a line backer and wide receiver.
I think Shockey will be a Saint by the end of the day…New Orleans Saint that is. If we can grab a two and a five for him, lets do it!

The giants did sign d.j. hall !!!
May 3rd, 2008 at 11:43 am
I would have taken Fred Davis in the 2nd round as the best available payer on the board. ( not sure if he was still available when Giants picked?) I think he, like Manningham, will prove to be steals. This guy has the agilty and speed/hands of a lot of wide receivers and is going to raise a lot of eyebrows in the NFL. WHY else would Washington of all teams draft him? They have another 4-5 years of pro bowl talent in Chris Cooley. That being said, T Thomas was probably 1 of 2 CB’s that I would have picked for that need. Thomas will be a starter beofre too long. Wait and see. Boss did a GREAT job last year and is a good NFL tight end. But remember this post because Fred Davis would make everybody forget about Shockey. He is THAT good.
May 3rd, 2008 at 11:44 am
Now that I think about I highly doube Davis would have been available as I am sure the Skins were up long before the giants
