News and notes from around the NFL

The NFL's Competition Committee will be convened for a special meeting, following the fallout after Sunday's Steelers-Chargers game. The officiating crew did not represent their brethren well in blowing another call which altered the final score. I've heard there was an exchange of $66 million which could have gone the other way if the zebras had made the correct call. I didn't see the game, but have also heard there were three other Steelers touchdowns taken off the board by the officials. NFL VP of Officiating Mike Pereira said he would do another background investigation of the officials who worked the game and I presume he means he will have their finances investigated.   Cowboys owner Jerry Jones said commissioner Roger Goodell is reinstating Adam "Pacman" Jones, who has been indefinitely suspended. Pacman could be back on the field in Pittsburgh on December 7. If Las Vegas has a line on how many more...

Which current NFL players will be in the Hall of Fame?

I'll be fortunate to tell my grandchildren one day that I saw most of the future Hall of Famers listed below. Not on TV, but in person, watching them in games with my binoculars focused on them and observing their actions. Whenever any of them are playing in the NFL stadium closest to you, I hope you'll take advantage of the opportunity to go see them.   The primary criteria I used in selecting these players is not how their stats compare to others already in the Hall, but how they compare to their contemporaries. The players who were the best in their era are the most deserving to be inducted one day. This is measured best, in my opinion, by the number of Pro Bowl appearances and first-team All-Pro honors garnered. Please also note that I am measuring these players by their entire body of work. If a player's career ends today, would he be...

NFL Power Rankings, Week Twelve

1. New York Giants (9-1) The G-men ran all over the Ravens last week in a very impressive performance, which helps to make them early favorites in postseason play.   2. Tennessee Titans (10-0) Just like Ol' Man River, Kerry Collins and the Titans keep rolling on. Their average margin of victory is eleven points per game.   3. Carolina Panthers (8-2) The Panthers are very quietly having a great season. They should continue to be a force as the schedule continues heading into the postseason.   4. Pittsburgh Steelers (7-3) The Steelers defense is playing tough. If Ben Roethlisberger and Willie Parker get healthy, watch out.   5. Tampa Bay Buccaneers (7-3) Can Jon Gruden take the Bucs to the promised land again? They're playing better than their talent says they should.   6. Washington Redskins (7-3) They've dropped a few spots after losing to the Cowboys but they still have the hosses to...

Quote the Ravens Nevermore

That is my request to all of the talking heads that cover the NFL. Just shut the hell up about Baltimore and how awesome Joe Flacco has been as a rookie. There's been so much praise thrown his way, it's amazing it hasn't gone to his head yet. Granted, this was going to be the usual year for Baltimore no matter who their quarterback was. Neither Kyle Boller nor Troy Smith had been exactly stunning coming into this season. Smith was the better of the two, and he's kind of a poor man's Vince Young - which isn't much, given where Vince Young is right now. I have a hard time agreeing with the praise that gets heaped on a player, especially when that player's primary job description is "don't screw it up." Yes, when your defense is as good as Baltimore's, all you really need is an offense that...

A Perfect 10-0! Titans rally to defeat Jags 24-14

Similar to an old Dickens' novel, today's Titans-Jags game was a tale of two halves. After falling behind 14-3 at intermission, the resilient Tennessee Titans shut out Jacksonville 21-0 in the second half during their convincing 24-14 victory. More thoughts on the Titans reaching the 10-0 mark, after the jump. ...

Jags vs. Titans: Jaguar Journal perspective

In this segment, let's take a look at the questions submitted to Jaguars Journal by Total Titans' Andrew Strickert: Total Titans: I was one of those who predicted the Jaguars would make the playoffs again this year, but they're now 4-5 and it now looks like every game is a must-win game. Are the Jaguars good enough to win six or seven of the remaining games to make the postseason? What do they have to do to accomplish that? Jaguars Journal: The Jaguars suffered some significant injuries, and then had to endure some self-inflicted wounds this year.  Off-field incidents like the Collier shooting and the Peterson suspension also contributed.   The team has the ability to win 6 or 7 games if they stay focused on the task at hand.  The problem this year is that their lack of consistency is directly tied to the fact that focus is not always there. ...

Jags vs. Titans: Total Titan's perspective

As we did in week one, Andrew Strickert from Total Titans and I got together to chat about the game today between the Jacksonville Jaguars and Tennessee Titans.  Thank you to Andrew for giving us his input. Jaguars Journal: The Titans have had an amazing run through the first ten weeks of the season.  At what point does overconfidence start to creep into the equation? Total Titans: Good question. The Titans are confident but there's no telling if or when they might become overconfident. It certainly won't be against the Jags, for whom they have a lot of respect. JJ: With Kerry Collins clearly assuming the role as the starting QB, what happens with Vince Young?  Knowing that Collins isn't exactly a long-term solution, how much effort is being put into trying to develop Young, or has the team already moved on? TT: I'm keeping my fingers crossed that Collins will remain healthy, as...

Pregame Hype: Leon Washington, Jet Propulsion

New York Jets 34, New England Patriots 31Thursday Night Football finds us hyping a game already played. And what a game it was for those lucky enough to see it on the NFL Network. The Jets showed enough offensive prowess to pull off the overtime win and weren't hurt bad enough to pay for defense's inability to stifle New England's come-back. For all the acclaim heaped on Brett Favre's performance (78.8 percent pass completion rate, 119.4 QB rating), Leon Washington had the more impressive night. Washington had a hand in the Jets' first two touchdowns, a seven yard scoring reception from Favre, and a 92 yard kick return that put the Jets up 17-6 in the second quarter.Washington averaged 44.3 yards per kick return. Take away that one 92 yard return and he still averages a respectable 28 yards per return. His returns gave the Jets excellent starting points on the...Read more

News and notes from around the NFL

Al Davis is shaking up the Raiders. Several weeks ago, he fired coach Lane Kiffin. On Wednesday, he released CB DeAngelo Hall, after giving up second- and fifth-round draft choices in an offseason trade for him and signing him to a $70 million contract. Next on the chopping block may be WR Javon Walker, who's getting $12 million this year, but hasn't given Oakland any bang for the buck.   Hall has reportedly drawn the interest of the Giants, Redskins, Patriots, Steelers and Jets. If Hall signs with any of those five teams, he'll be on a better team than the one that just released him. All five teams have winning records and a good shot at the playoffs.   Coach Jack Del Rio is shaking up the Jaguars as well.  Del Rio sent star linebacker Mike Peterson home before Wednesday's practice, switched the lockers of several players and told the team to cut out the...Read more

A 2008 NFL midseason review

Every team has now played eight games, and some nine, which brings us to the halfway point of the regular season. Now that it's halftime, so to speak, it's a good time to review the first half of the season. Each year, some of the teams predicted to be in strong contention for postseason play don't perform up to expectations and are replaced in the standings by a few surprise teams. We'll also take a look to see who's on a hot streak and who's not, review the most competitive races, and finally, recognize some people for individual accomplishments. How the mighty have fallen: Indianapolis, the second seed in the AFC last year with a 12-4 record, and only two years removed from a Super Bowl title, has limped out to a 4-4 start. The Chargers, the third AFC seed last year, have a 3-5 record, as do the Jaguars,...Read more

NFL Stock Market Week 10: Jags might hit rock bottom soon

Three risers and fallers this week on the NFL Stock Market.RisersPlayer:  WR Antonio Bryant, Tampa Bay BuccaneersBryant has always been a good (at times, great) receiver in this league, but those crazy off the field problems have always kept him from establishing himself in a single city.  He most recently flamed out of San Francisco and appeared to be finished, only to have Jon Gruden give him one last chance.  No team does a better job of finding established talent to fill out its roster than the Buccaneers, and Bryant is all of a sudden the top target in Tampa.  Bryant is on pace to reach 1,000 yards receiving this year, and he will be a big factor in the playoff run for the Bucs.Team:  Miami DolphinsRight now, the best team in Florida is not the Bucs or the Jags.  It's...the Miami Dolphins?  Yep.  LB Joey Porter got another sack...Read more
