Jaguars will try to trade out of 26th spot on draft day

With draft just over a week away, Jacksonville is in an interesting spot. The Jaguars select 26th overall, which isn’t really the spot they want to be in. Jaguars Journal has already talked about what the Jaguars’ biggest needs are and where they will likely make those selections, with defensive line being top priority, followed by offensive line and safety.

However, the 26th pick will likely put the Jaguars in no-man’s land. All the top defensive ends will likely be gone, unless Phillip Merling or Derrick Harvey fall, and the same goes for left tackles. Being in such a predicament, it seems very likely that the Jaguars will either go three ways….trade up, trade down or trade for an established player.

The Jaguars have two third roudners and two fifths which will certainly give them options in regards to trading. If Jacksonville wants to trade up, they can package a third and fifth along with their first and move up to around the 18th pick. That will likely enable the Jaguars to take Merling or Harvey, or possibly OT’s  Ryan Clady, Jeff Otah or Chris Williams.

This isn’t an unlikely scenario, but there is an equally good or even better chance that the Jaguars will trade down in the draft. One possibility is that the Jaguars could pull a trade with Atlanta, who has a strong connection to the Jags. Atlanta has three second rounders and will look to trade up and get two first round picks, and if they did trade two seconds (theirs and Oakland’s) then they would likely take a QB with the 26th overall selection. Thus, Jacksonville would trade its 1st and 2nd for two of Atlanta’s seconds. This would enable Jacksonville to take a good DE and OT, and not reach. Carl Nicks, Duane Brown and Sam Baker are all linemen who could be available. Calais Campbell could be a steal if he falls, and Lawrence Jackson could also be available.

Either trading up or down could benefit the Jaguars, but another option that we have discussed here several times is trading for an established veteran end. Jason Taylor’s name has popped up several times and don’t be surprised if Jacksonville pulls the trigger on draft day. Taylor, 34, could likely be had for a 3rd and 5th rounder, although Miami reportedly wants more but I highly doubt they’ll get it.

Another trade possibility that has always been said in whispers but now is starting to pick up volume is the Jaguars possibly trading for Jared Allen. Kansas City is reportedly looking to move the Pro Bowl defensive end and Minnesota and Jacksonville are top candidates. The Vikings are also pursuing Taylor, and also outbid the Jaguars for S Madieu Williams, so the Jags aren’t really feeling the color purple right now. K.C would likely want a 1st and 2nd rounder, which might be worth it for a player of Allen’s caliber, but the one downside is that he has had alcohol related problems before and one more incident would warrant a suspension. The Chiefs will try to get teams to enter a bidding war and Jacksonville likely wants not part of it, so they will just sit back and things fall into place.

To sum it up, I guess you can say that the Jags have options. I really feel that there is a better chance that the Jags make a draft day trade than stand still. Regardless of what happens, the Jagaurs’ needs are clear and they need to fill those voids by the end of the offseason and it seems very likely that Shack Harris will find a way to get it done, one way or another.

I agree Brendan, But if I had to choose one move, it would be Trade for a proven Veteran liker Taylor or Allen.

I think so too John. The good thing about this Allen talking to Minnesota thing is that it opens up the doors to Taylor because there is not as much competition trying to get him and his price will be lower too.

Taylor has no control over his trade value. Miami determines that, and what happens with Allen has little impact on his price tag.

Miami is going to stick to their guns on their asking price no matter what Minnesota or Tampa do with Jared Allen. It doesn’t hurt the Dolphins in any way to NOT trade Taylor. They’re going to milk it for the maximum, and if they can’t get it, so be it.

Every move Miami has made this offseason dictates that they are looking to the future, and they WILL get desperate as the draft approaches and WIll have to lower their asking price, especially if Minnesota lands Allen.

I could see the Jags benefitting from trading down and adding another pick or so. They have most of their angles covered, they just need to get over the hump. Maybe defensive line or add Jared Allen from the Chiefs in some kind of draft day deal.

Trade for Allen or Taylor. We have a jar on the shelf with Brian Smith. We can severly upgrade a need right now and still draft some prospects.
We have the window open, let’s jump through it.

I think the Taylor trade is becoming more likely as the draft approaches, but you never know, one slip can make things fall through

Brendan, Have you heard anything else with Jason Taylor? You sound pretty sure and I hope your right.

The Jaguars-Peppers rumors are heating up, but I dont know how valid it is.

John, I havent heard anything else but like I said, if the Allen trade does occur to Kansas City, it betters the odds for Jacksonville to trade for Taylor because there wouldnt be as much competition from the Vikings.

The deal almost makes too much sense to not happen. The Dolphins need extra picks and have no reason to keep paying a 34 year-old end when they are clearly rebuilding. Jacksonville needs an impact pass rusher to help make adeep playoff run. Jacksonville has extra picks to trade, Miami needs extra picks…makes a lot of sense, hope our intuition is right John

The Jaguars will not trade out of their pick unless there is an absolute offer. What i mean is that there really is anyone they could trade with. Why would they trade with Atlanta fo two 2nd round picks it’s not worth it. Not to mentioned getting Jason Taylor, he at best has one-two years left if he’s lucky three. He isn’t worth a whole bunch of money. If the trade does go down with Kansas City, which it most likley won’t because the Jaguars have nothing of value to the Chiefs. So you all need listen up and start reading “AskVic” on the Jaguars website then maybe you might have some insight on what eally might go down.

As the draft approaches, it seems like the Jags are starting to find some players they like at 26 and will probably stay there. I highly doubt however that the Jags dont trade up for a DE or dont trade for one, because there likely wont be a game changing end at 26. And no, I wont read Ask Vic before posting, eh is certainly not the end all, be all of knowledge. Id rather go to Jagnation if you want the real scoop.

Minnesota just traded for Jared Allen, and the Chiefs will have many picks now…they are in very good shape for the draft…
Also, what will change the whole draft now is the fact that Jake Long is at contract terms with Miami…and did you all see the 2-round mock draft that Rivals did…it was HORRIBLE….the worst ever…

Brendan, You don’t have to listen. The trade will not happen who or what would they trade for Jason Taylor? He doesn’t have that much left and he certainly won’t get the Jaguars over the hump. The Jaguars need young talent whom the team can count on. Even if the Jaguars do get Jason Taylor he will most likely turn out like Hugh Douglas, which wasn’t great and getting Jason Taylor will be the same.
