Hank Poteat is Back
You know your team has issues at cornerback when it is a big deal that they re-sign Hank Poteat. Yet, for the 2008 New York Jets finally getting Poteat under contract was a big move. The Jets have a major hole at corner opposite Darelle Revis, and Poteat could very well end up being the starter as he is coming off a pretty solid season. He will battling against Justin Miller, who has the most talent but has struggled with technique and is coming off knee surgery. Fourth Round pick Dwight Lowery seems to be an early favorite of Eric Mangini and could battle for the job also. Drew Coleman will likely be the nickel back and hopefully David Barrett will be cut by the end of camp.
Other News and Notes:
- There are still rumors about the Jets signing Ty Law, which might not be the worst thing in the world at this point. Law is good enough at this point to be a #2 corner behind Revis, and unless Lowery is ready to go as a full time player in September or Miller steps up, Law could be the best option.
- Peter King recently ranked the Jets as the 14th best team in the NFL. Not bad for a team that was 4-12 last year, he is confident in their ability to get to the passer with Pace and Gholston…let’s hope so. He had Buffalo ranked number 13.
- Right now, I would say it is a toss up between the Bills and Jets as the second best team in the AFC East. If the Jets get consistency at the quarterback position, there is no reason they can’t be a playoff team. That is a big “if” to have hanging over your team though.

Ok Hank’s signed, lets cut Barett, trade Baker the
latest whiner for whatever late round pick we can
get for him, sign Shane Olevia for some much
needed depth on the line and maybe see what it
would take to get Lito Sheppard in to play the
corner oppisite Revis.

The only thing about Lito Sheppard is i think he will cost too much. With Baker and Barett gone we might have some flexibility though. I think Law might be a better fit just because we have 2 young corners that would benefit from his veteran presence. Law was a 5 time pro-bowler at corner that can show these young guys how to get to that level. I would love to have either Sheppard or Law giving us one less hole on defense.

dont forget dwayne robertson is gone thats 9 million off the cap
sign law, hes a veteran player who would be great for the team or sheppard but id rather take law once u complete that look at ur weaknesses. only at DE.
am i right?

I think we’re safe at CB between Lowery turning out to be a pleasant surprise in camp and J-Miller coming back. I think Ty Law may still be good but he’s old and isn’t he a bad influence? Lito Shephard is over-rated.
I think we still have a hole at FS. Adam Archuleta was just cut, would he be a good fit for the Jets? Archuleta is a better fit at FS than at SS I think - less coverage responsibility and more hitting. I know he can’t cover worth a damn but when he’s at the top of his game, he can lay the smack down on people and I think we need a heavy hitter like that. Does he have anything left - can Mangini motivate him to be the enforcer he once was? Is he a Tangini type of player?

Archuleta is an interesting thought, although he really has struggled the past few seasons. I am confident in both Elam and E. Smith, and think we have decent depth because both can play.
In terms of corner, signing Ty Law to a one year deal and cutting David Barrett would be a real nice move for the Jets. The Eagles are likely asking too high of a price for Lito Sheppard for the Jets to make a trade.

Careful with the free agent talk. Do you know of any successful NFL franchises constructed of free agents in so many key roles? Careful, friends. Build thru the draft.

The Jets have been built through the draft:
Nick Mangold - Starting Center, very good player
D’Brickashaw Ferguson - Starting tackle, good player
Leon Washington - 2007 Team MVP
Eric Smith - Likely starting safety next year
Kellen Clemens - Likely starting QB next year
Drew Coleman - Nickelback
David Harris - Starting linebacker, very good player
Darelle Revis - Starting CB, very good player
Vernon Gholston - Likely starting OLB
Dustin Keller - Should see major reps on offense
Dwight Lowery - Should see major reps on defense

i think the jets draft blunders are getting better and better each season less and less stupid picks
i love it
