Lions - Rd 7 (218)- Caleb Campbell, S, Army

With the 218th selection in the 2008 NFL Draft, the Detroit Lions select Caleb Campbell, safety from Army.

The feel good story of the draft, the Lions hope Campbell can be versatile enough to play outside linebacker as well as safety. At 6-2 and 230 pounds, he runs a 4.57 forty and is a sure tackler as well as being the first cadet drafted since 1997. He is strong in run support, has a nose for the football and loves hitting. He had 97 tackles and three forced fumbles this past season.

A lot of nice ironies with this selection. We all know Rod Marinelli was a Vietnam War veteran and Campbell’s sophomore year, he was coach by former Lion, Army, and Citadel head coach Bobby Ross, also a military man. Campbell played with Matt Millen’s son Marc as well.

What happens if Caleb Campbell does not make the opening day roster of any NFL team? Is he still off the hook for active duty just for being drafted? I understand the Army’s desire to use him as a recruiting tool, but is Millen just doing his son a favor for a friend or can he really make the team?(And really, how hard can that be!?!)

Being a Lion fan, I agree with you. It would be a huge shock if this guy doesn’t make the roster, but from the looks of him, his play, and versatility, I would say he would make it anyway. I am sure Millen had all of those things in mind but at the same time, I would like to think that he simply had a better knowledge of this guy from his son’s relationship with him.

I do not believe he is off the hook just by being drafted, I think he has to make a roster although I do not know if not with the Lions, how long he has to make it happen with another team.

He actually needs to return back to his original plan to Iraq if he doesn’t make the team. If he does, he can fulfill his requirements through recruiting.

Check out this piece I wrote about Campbell on my 49ers site. http://mvn.com/nfl-49ers/2008/04/29/what-caleb-campbell-really-means-for-the-nfl-nation/
