Round 7, pick 209: Packers draft another quarterback
With the first of their three 7th round picks, Green Bay selected their second quarterback of the draft in Matt Flynn from LSU. Flynn will compete against Brian Brohm to see who will backup new starter Aaron Rodgers.
Flynn had success at the collegiate level, earning offensive MVP honors in the 2008 BCS National Championship game in LSU’s 38-24 win over Ohio State. Flynn went 19 for 27 for 174 yards with 4 TDs and 1 pick in the game. Unlike Brohm, Flynn is weaker in terms of experience, first becoming a starter last season. Before his senior season, Flynn served as LSU’s backup to the 2007 overall number one pick, JaMarcus Russell.
Although his numbers through the air aren’t jaw-dropping, Flynn is a proven winner and is very mobile. He appears to be a player who will need a couple years of development before he makes any real impact, though. Don’t expect Flynn to be anything more than a third-stringer in his first season.
