Watching the Pack practice is like a good cheese curd

Packers fans have a great tradition here in Green Bay of lining the fences and taking in some Packers Practices. Fans come from all over just to see the big men run through drills and light work. Its a great time for the whole family, and any time the Pack are outside the Don Hutson Center you will see people flock to the fences and bleachers in order to catch a glimpse at old stars and young newbies.

I was about 12 the first time I went to a practice. My sister and her husband had moved to Green Bay, and whenever I visited we got to do a Packer activity. I still have a lot of the same excitement today driving or biking over to Lambeau to watch practice across the street.

The Pack have another great tradition of riding kids’ bikes from the practice field to the locker room. I was never graced with the presence of a Packer on my bike, but I can see the excitement on the kids who are lucky enough to take part. I’ve heard of great relationships building between players and kids with cards and friendships. Just another reason the Packers are such a great community team.

Going to the practices really brings back childhood memories and can still make you very excited as an adult. You’re within walking distance of plenty of bars and restaurants and always within an arms length of another Packer fan. Lambeau and the Packer Hall of Fame are across the street. Everyone is eager to talk football, and the weather in Green Bay is closer to Pismo Beach, CA than the North Pole.

Fans take pictures and cheer great plays. Many times you can get a feel for how players have progressed and see who is chiseled and who hit the buffet in the off season. I suggest a field trip for all of you who can make the trek to Green Bay. It’s a hors d’oeuvre to the preseason salad and the regular season main course. It’s light, delicious and gets you hungry for more.

I will never forget the numerous trips I took with my family to observe Packer practices.

It was always a challenge to sneak through the huge herd as a youngster, trying to to get an autograph without getting run over.

My best memory is when Reggie White wasn’t signing autographs, but took the time to slow down and shake my hand. Immediately after I shook off the shock of what had happended, I sprinted over to my family to relive my memory .

Wanted to hear how you compared it to a cheese curd…
I wish I had had the experience of watching practices as a kid so I could get that nostalgic feeling (lived over 100 miles from Lambeau), but I know I would enjoy it now simply because of the amateur coach in me.

I always enjoyed riding from the Wausau area and hopping on HWY 29 at least once an offseason to Green Bay for these practices. I was always very envious of the kids who were able to get a Packer player to agree to ride their bikes from the stadium down to the practice field.

I still have a great picture of a crowd of kids swarming around Don Majkowski trying to get his autograph as he made the trip down. I was able to get a couple of autographs myself, so I’ll have to dig out my old Packers yearbooks to see which players they were. They probably weren’t anyone famous, which is probably the reason I was able to get such easy access to them in the first place.

I’m glad TT drafts players who continue to uphold their responsiblities to the community and fans.

You had me at “cheese curd”!
A former Governor of Wisconsin proclaimed Ellsworth Cooperative Creamery the “Cheese Curd Capital of Wisconsin” for a reason.
Their cheddar cheese curds are the BEST!
YUM! They go great with a Packer game!

I remember back in my days, Tim Harris (part of the Cardiac Pack team in 1989) would always come out of the locker room late, yet there would still be about six of us kids waiting for him to ride one of our bikes. He would come our running, grab a bike and take off with it to the practice field leaving the lucky youngster at the top of the hill only to find his bike laid up against the fence at the bottom when he finally got there. haha

    Thanks for sparking that memory!
