The Patriot Act

Patriots play and win as a team

The New England Patriots have the best record in the NFL having gone 17-0 so far in the 2007 season.

The record of 19-0 is in sight, but the Patriots are not focused on that point. They are looking to win the next game versus the San Diego Chargers.

Does the win bring the team one more game closer to destiny and dynasty? To hear it from the individual players you would nto think so. Being true to Belichickian way, the players know it will be a tough win at home against a team on the rise the last two months and on an eight game winning streak. Oddly enough the Chargers last loss was against the Jacksonville Jaguars.

As much as the media and fans expected a Patriot win against the Jaguars, so did Colts fans expect a win against the Chargers. When Donte’ Stallworth was asked about the way the Chargers beat the Colts, he responded

They played hard. People were thinking about them [San Diego] not being that good of a team and how the beat the Colts. A lot of their key guys were out and they had other guys step in. Me seeing that on a personal note, I think they’re the deepest team in the league, definitely the deepest team of the last four teams in this tournament. Like I said it’s going to be a challenge and they played really well against the defending champions in their place with guys down. That says a lot about that team there. They’re not afraid to go anywhere and play anyone. That’s what that shows me.

When asked on the Chargers improvement since the last time the Patriots played them in September winning 38-21, Richard Seymour commented,

“You’ve seen what we’ve done. Everyone’s seen what we’ve done. Obviously, defensively we have to do a better job,” Seymour conceded. “We’re going to have our work cut out for us. They’re putting points up on the board and they’re not allowing a lot of points.”

So this is a different team…

“We’re not surprised that they’re in the AFC Championship Game,” DL Richard Seymour declared. “If you go back and look at the film, there’s a reason why they’re here.”

Well, you can not be more Belichickian as that.

But statistically the Patriots should win. At least according to Accuscore.com the Patriots will win in every circumstance imaginable. The accuscore.com predicted outcome have the Patriots winning 32-17.

Although the Chargers have been vocal on their thoughts of meeting the Patriots in the AFC Championship - thank you Igor- there are many Chargers fans who are vocal too. Over at Chargers Confidential, writer Rich Campbell expresses his thoughts on the Chargers facing the Patriots.

The oddsmakers have already established the Patriots as 14 ½ favorites in the AFC Championship Game. Please. Continue. We love it. But we don’t need the motivation.

We remember the dancing buffoons on our logo. We seek nothing less than to ruin the quest for the perfect season and return to the Super Bowl. I doubt the players on the Patriots will be as overconfident as the pundits. We can only hope.

For the Chargers players and their fans, they are in a no lose situation. There were no expectations to be in the AFC Championship after starting 1-3. But here they are and talking the talk of a team to take seriously. Bill Belichick and the Patriots as also talking the talk to take the Chargers seriously.

The Patriots win and lose as a team. They do not like to lose and for a few team players: Junior Seau, Kyle Brady, Randy Moss, Wes Welker, Donte’ Stallworth and Laurence Maroney they have the opportunity to win their first Super Bowl. Others like Tedy Bruschi, Mike Vrabel, Vince Wilfork, Ty Warren, Kevin Faulk, Rodney Harrison, Asante Samuel and Tom Brady it is the next Super Bowl win.

The heart of a winning team and a team that wins!

IN BILL WE TRUST!

In case you need a reminder on the season here is the schedule from Patriots.com.

Well, I wasn’t at all surprised that San Diego defeated Indianapolis at the weekend. My personal view is that Indianapolis paid a heavy price for taking it easy in Week 17 and effectively having a four week break. And the same fate befell the Dallas Cowboys.
So far I’d say the teams that are doing best in the play-offs are teams that really gave it their all in Week 17, such as the San Diego Chargers (17-30 winners over Oakland in Week 17), Green Bay (34-13 winners over Detroit) and New England and the New York Giants who had a titantic contest in Week 17 and the Patriots won 38-35.
The Giants then had an on-the-road win in the Wild Card round against Tampa Bay (losers to Carolina 31-23 in Week 17) and another super win against the Dallas Cowboys (dismantled 6-27 by Washington on Week 17).
So, San Diego’s win over Indianapolis (who lost to Tennessee - gifting the Titans a Wild Card place, thus showing some contempt towards the league, in my view - 16-10 in Week 17).
Or am I talking - or writing - nonsense?

I don’t really see it as a no lose situation as I think another loss to the Pats would be crushing for SD team and fans, just as a loss for the Patriots at this point would be a crushing blow for us.

Both teams have everything to play for, both know what is really on the line here and I expect both teams to leave it all on the field.. Although, that being said, Tomlinson did decide it was better to think about the future and ride the bike on the sidelines last week when realistically he probably could have gone back in and played.. Hey that’s fine by me.

    GO PATS

    Andrew,
You are not talking nonsense. In fact, I think it’s no shock that last season, the Colts HAD to play Week 17 and carried that into the playoffs, while the season before that, they rested and lost to the Steelers in the same round as this year. Momentum is huge in sports, which is why Belichick has had his players play 60 minutes all season. It’s not something you can turn on and off. It helped them win close games and hopefully will carry them into the Superbowl.

Interesting that you should mention Junior. Here in San Diego, it’s our ready-made way for us to console ourselves should things go as most expect them to on Sunday… that Junior would get a ring.

You have to understand that Junior Seau is still massively beloved in San Diego. Think Ray Bourque & the Stanley Cup, although not quite that intense since Junior has been gone a few years. Remember that Junior had signed a one day contract to announce his retirement as a Charger before the Patriots came calling…

Junior deserves a ring. I liked watching him and Harrison in San Diego.

Junior’s heart will probably always be w San Diego, but when he gets a ring with New England it will add to his legacy… The man came out of retirement to play and won a Championship!
