Zach Thomas paying the Pats a visit
Boston Globe’s Mike Reiss is reporting that former Miami LB Zach Thomas will visit the Patriots on Monday. Thomas has been a 7-time Pro Bowler but played only 5 games last season due to concussions and migraines. As I stated earlier when Miami originally released Thomas, I don’t feel that he would be a good fit in a 3-4 scheme. Besides that, he is 34 years old in an already “over-aged” linebacking corps, and who knows how much he has left. Concussions and migraines, as Ted Johnson and numerous other former NFL players will tell you, are a serious matter, and Thomas shouldn’t expose himself to recurring head injuries that could become permanent. In the 3-4, Thomas will have to take on 300-lb guards, and he may not have the size to shed them to make plays. Having a migraine problem also won’t be helped out running into those guards. If he does end up signing with the Pats, I will remain very skeptical of the decision. There are other younger players that could be brought in, including free agents Calvin Pace from Arizona and Landon Johnson from Cincinnati.
