The Patriot Act

Pats should say, “Game Over” to Pacman

Over the past couple of days, rumors have been running rampant that the Patriots have a strong interest in Adam “Pacman” Jones. Pacman, as you may recall, has been gobbling up run-ins with the law and strip clubs like they were little yellow dots and red cherries since he entered the NFL in 2005. After the infamous incident in a Las Vegas strip club that left a man paralyzed, Pacman has been serving a year (and counting) long suspension, and now he wants to be re-instated before the draft so as to work out a trade for his services.

As desperate as the Pats are for corners, Pacman is the last person they should go after. Well, maybe the legendary Earthwind Moreland is the last person they should go after, but Pacman’s just one step up from him. There is no denying Pacman’s emerging talents at corner and as a return man, but the baggage that comes along with it could be enough to sink the Pats’ ship, what with the recent SpyGate business, Rodney Harrison’s suspension for taking HGH, and a marijuana arrest after the Superbowl (I know the loss was tough Willie Andrews, but c’mon). The Patriots have had success as of late rebuilding the image of some football players. Corey Dillon and Randy Moss have benefited from the veteran leadership and strict coaching from Bill Belichick, and Pacman’s agent feels they can do the same for Mr. Jones:

If Tennessee decides there is going to be a trade, New England would be a very good fit for us. The reason for that is great leadership, strong coaching and a winning tradition. Over my years representing athletes and being a lawyer, as long as you’re winning, all the baggage goes away. No one wants to be the guy to mess up winning. The track record the Patriots have in giving players a fresh start would be a great fit.”

While some of that may be true, I don’t trust the fact that Pacman can stay out of trouble. What if there’s a down season? Does that mean he can revert back to his shenanigans? Can you imagine Pacman during Superbowl party week? I certainly can’t, and I don’t think he deserves to be on this squad. Tedy Bruschi, Tom Brady, Rodney Harrison, and Mike Vrabel should act as Blinky, Pinky, Inky, and Clyde, and approach Belichick and Pioli and end this trade rumor’s life.

Luckily for Pats fans, it seems as though Dallas may beat everyone to the punch and trade for Pacman for a mid-to-late round pick. Gotta love Jerry Jones sometimes, no? Let Pacman be the Cowboys’ problem, and keep him out of New England.

I agree. I see nothing that Pacman brings to the table. It seems as though people have overblown his skills since he’s been out. He is a great return man and not much more. He’s a very solid young cornerback, but he’s no Asante Samuel, and he doesn’t strike me as the kind of guy who has been keeping in shape and doing everything he could to make a solid return. People say the Patriots are good at rehabilitating players who have lost their way…well, those are the type of players who care about football and are disgruntled because they want to win. Not guys who never learn and if given another chance, they’ll abuse it and do another dumb thing.

Exactly. The only thing remotely athletic he’s done is work with TNA wrestling, and I don’t even know to what capacity that was.
