Memo to the Dr Z and the Hall of Fame selectors: Put Ray Guy in!

Attention writers who are now meeting to select the new induction class for the Pro Football Hall of Fame, put Ray Guy in. It is being held against him that his position was punter, but punters are one of two positions that put the FOOT in football. Guy was a master at his position, evidenced by the numerous awards that he won during his playing career for being the best player at his position. Ray Guy deserves to get that call so he can get his yellow jacket and slice of immortality. As Raider fans, should do what we can to help him.

Raider fans if you listen to any sports talk radio, call in and ask questions about why Ray Guy is not yet enshrined. His name is simple and sticks on the brain easily, the more it is heard the better. Flood Dr Z's inbox. He is on record as doing something that opponents could not, block Ray Guy (or at least his kicks.)

Ray Guy is the only eligible member of the NFL All 75 team who is not in the Hall of Fame. His inclusion as a member of the All 75 team along with the greatest legends of the game like Gayle Sayers, Bronko Nagurski, and teammate Ted Hendricks screams this man belongs in the Hall of Fame. He is obviously considered the elite of his position.

Ray Guy, along with teammate Ken Stabler were named members of the NFL all 1970s team, showing that they were considered among the best players of that decade, yet neither of them have gotten the call from Canton.

Ray Guy went to the Pro Bowl seven times. SEVEN seasons he was selected as the best player at his position in his conference.

Punting is a position that is considered synonymous with failure, as they come in send the ball back to the other team after a failed offensive drive, but Guy has the ultimate success as he was on three Super Bowl rings. I guess him putting opponents in bad field position had nothing to do with that success in the minds of the gatekeepers of the Hall.

Dr Z loves to say that Tommy Davis had better numbers and should be in before Ray Guy. Davis had 2 Pro Bowl appearances. Ray Guy had seven. Guy was recognized as the best at his position three times as many times as Davis. Guy has already been acknowledged by the NFL as being superior to Davis by virtue of his inclusion on the NFL All 75 team over Davis.

Ray Guy's numbers are also not going to be as high as others because he played on a great team. It was not often that Ray Guy had to kick out of his own end zone and was able to just boom it long which shaved yards off of his numbers.

Probably Guy's signature moment happened in the biggest game, Super Bowl XVIII. The Redskins had stopped the Raiders deep in their own territory early in the game. The snap was high over his head, but Guy leaped up and was able to bring down the snap and get the punt away denying the 'Skins field position.

PUT RAY GUY IN THE HALL OF FAME!

Good article, I liked the FOOT in football line, classic. I agree that punters should be in the Hall of Fame especially when they are the best of their generation.

I totally agree that Ray Guy should be in the hall of fame. I had forgotten that he was chosen for the NFL All 75 Team. From what I have read Ray Guy has been inducted into other Halls of Fame for being the best at his position. The Profootball Hall of Fame committee seems not to take this into consideration. I was just reading Peter King's predictions of who will make it. He did not even mention Ray Guy's name. I noticed though in his list are a number of linemen, offense and defense. There is no debating the importance of their postions, but they are not asked to score. I wrote that because I read that in another article as to why Ray Guy should not be considered. The Hall of Fame is for those who were the best to play at their position or if they were one of the best coaches or an owner who contributed much to the game. I'm sure that there were other punters that were good. Ray Guy stands out as one of the best to ever play the game at his position and should be voted in. I will post a comment to Dr. Z.

Best punter in college football gets the Ray Guy award.

helium in the footballs Guy punted. College DB who tackled

well. Emergency QB. Nuff said.
