Oakland Raiders lock down Gibril Wilson
According to the NFL Network, the Oakland Raiders have signed safety Gibril Wilson to a six year deal worth up to $39 million. Between this and the Tommy Kelly deal, the Raiders obviously are seeking to upgrade their defense. This deal may have the added effect, much to the delight of many in the Raider Nation, of ending the tenure of Stuart Schewigert.
Welcome to the Raider Nation, Gibril, we are happy to have you!
Still on the Raiders to do list is to meet with Bernard Berrian, and other wide receivers. That is still a position in dire need. It will likely be addressed through the draft, but with the holes there, a veteran presence is something that is a desperate need.
There is also the rumored deal with Kwame Harris of San Francisco to be woked out, as well as locking Nnamdi Asomugha to a long term deal.

So much for the guy who said we haven’t signed anyone other then our own players in the previous thread. This is a great signing, finally a hard hitter in the mix again. Been far too long. Now let’s lock up Berrian and watch the Vikes cry like little girls.
Raiders baby!!

THANK YOU GOD!!!! NO MORE STU!!!
I must say that I have been asking for Gibril for about a month, and I am really happy to see the Raiders yet again proving all the haters, and doubters wrong. That’s right ESPN, it looks like the Raiders can in fact go and get some FAs.

Silver N Black-I am hoping to hear that we landed Berrian. That would be huge. As soon as I get something concrete, even wet concrete it will be on here.

And another thing! Now the Raiders have a ’show me card’ they can take around to the other FAs they are going after. They can say were turning the corner and other FAs have already jumped on board to get even better.

I HATE YOU CHRIS CARTER!!
February 29th, 2008 at 7:58 pm
My goodness, the Raiders have invested 89 million in two contracts-Tommy (Who?) Kelly and Gibril Wilson, and Kelly is coming off surgery! Are they going to block on the offensive line too? No wonder you win like 3 games a year!

Get Bernard now oakland. And Draft Vernon Golston from Ohio State. He could be our Freeny. GO RAIDERS!!! Chris Cater suck’s!!

How right was I????You can’t hate too much on dizzle. He was man enough to admit he learned something when we last spoke of Wilson. Yeah, Carter is an ass and he’s pileing on with the rest of the raider hateing clowns(christova). Here is the thing “experts” like Carter don’t understand. #1 with the salary cap in the situation that it is. All free agents are going to get PAID!!! Pro-bowlers, starters and back ups. In a year or two Kelly’s deal will look somewhat pedestrian. #2 Kelly is legit. Yeah you can say he’s just coming off an injury and where are the number to back it up, but He’s a playmaker at the DT position and he has the ability to move to end if need be. Considering there are so many injuries in the game today a guy like this is a luxury. Sapp himself remarked on how good Kelly will be and with Sapp gone, Kelly will be paid almost as much as Sapp would have this year. I still would like us to aquire another run stuffing d-lineman though. Berrian is scaring me. I thought he was wearing silver and black underroos for the past month. The Vikes have some money to spend and it seems like they want him bad. Let’s all hope that it’s -39 degrees in the twin cities tonight and that BB loves his family in the bay area.

Check that, Berrian is in route to Oaktown and should be signing with the team saturday. Perfect!

Silver N Black “so much for the guy that we haven’t signed anyone but our own players” Yeah I said that and when I said it, it was a FACT. Who are you friggin Nastrodamus? I am ecstatic that we finally got one of our target players. Adding a SS like Gibril Wilson makes the entire secondary better. The Raiders wanted to draft Bob Sanders but missed out on him. Now they may have gotten the next best thing. Now if we can get Berrian I think we can cool our heels and see who comes to us in a bargain and then fill the rest of the needs in the draft. My outlook just got a bit brighter.

Hey OakFoSho speaking of crow, how is your boy Chris Clemons doing? oh yeah he is no longer a Raider. Tough luck there buddy.

let me ask you guys something…does raider nation really like the thought of overpaying so many players who really don’t deserve all so much money (like Gibril Wilson and that defensive tackle Kelly) and do you really think it will make such an impact on your win-loss record? What do you see for the Raider organization’s financial health in the long run? I personally don’t like the looks of things for you guys…just my objective opinion…

LDizzle,
It’s all in good fun man, But in case you forgot, your argument was that Clemons was not ’servicable’, and the heavy interest in him from teams around the league including the Eagles (who appear to have locked him up) proves that you were wrong. Like I said before, DT was the reason for the run struggles this season, not DE. Clemons was a great addition, and I was hoping the Raiders would resign him, unfortunately that did not happen. Again, look back at the comments from our Clemons debate and you will see I am correct.
So, yet again, hows that crow taste? MMM MMM GOOD!!

FoSho,
Clemons proved to be a good pass rusher with his eight sacks, which tied for the team lead. But he is being looked at more as a situational player (read: Pass rush specialist) than as an every down DE. He is thought of around the league as a hybred DE/OLB.
I would agree with you that he is more than serviceable, but I would not feel comfortable with him out there as an every down DE.
There is plenty of blame to go around for the run game. Yes, DT was a big part of it, and hopefully now that Kelly has a home and can focus on being the UT he will be able to slow the opponent’s run game. To fully excel he needs a wide body in the mold of a young Ted Washington next to him to eat up space. I will be nervous about the run if the starting tackle tandem is Kelly & Warren as Warren is best as a pass rushing tackle, not a space eater.
This comment is now longer than some of my full posts.
BTW, I am enjoying reading your debate with L Dizzle.
Thanks for reading and commenting, guys.

OakFoSho I am not sure you know what the saying “eating crow” means. You tell me I will eat crow because we signed Gibril Wilson. That makes no sense whatsoever. Read what JRass just said. I didn’t have Gibril on my list of FA that we should pick up at first simply because he played and is listed as a FS. I initially had him near the top of my list but then when I saw him listed at FS I questioned my decision and removed him. I immediately added him back to the list when JRass pointed out that he was indeed a SS in prior years. And as far as our argument goes, you were throwing a fit about me saying we should pick up a DE and now low and behold we definately need to sign a DE. There are two sides to the Clemons thing too. So Eagles were interested but for the Raiders purposes he was expendable. So it goes both ways. Much like the Raiders signing a few Olineman that other teams didn’t want because they fit our zone blocking scheme better. Same idea. So save you “eat it crow boy” childishness and let’s all just be happy that the Raiders got their man in Wilson. As I said, I am ecstatic. Berrian is next and who knows after that. Cheers.

I don’t hate the Raiders, but I can be objective about them because I am a Giants fan. Wilson is not worth 39 million, you will soon see. When two guys take up so much of your cap, they better be superstars, because you need 22 guys starting and 30 more backing them up, and they all need to get paid. As far as the Raiders’ record, history speaks for itself. I can love or hate the Raiders, the fact is they stink and will into the future if they keep making bone-headed FA signings.

OK, the reason I was really upset with you comments pre-Darius acquisition, was because of the negativity regarding the Raiders not signing any FAs yet. So in this case I will take back the plate of Crow, though you should have more faith.
Regarding Clemons, I think that the Eagles are trying to do to the Raiders with Clemons, what the Raiders did to the Eagles with Burgess. I think that Burgess is better, but the knock against him is the same as Clemons, weak against the run. However, concidering the rest of the league believes him to be a hybrid, it seems he was out of position for the Raiders, thus explaining the weakness against the run. In fact, from what people are saying, put into the right system, Clemons could be a terrifying force for QBs.
LDizzle, the whole premise of my argument for taking DT over DE in the 1st round, was that Clemons would be resigned. However that did not happen, so I have changed my approach, now weighting each position equally. Long or Dorsey would be great at #4, as long as one falls to us. So with Clemons departure, I actually agree, but my argument from before still holds. With Clemons, the Raiders would have had to have gone DT.
