Raiders to cut Sims, Jerry Porter and Chris Clemons land elsewhere

Free agency is in full swing and the rumor-mill is working overtime. Just last night, pft reported that the Raiders had signed Kwame Harris, then they reported that he hadn't signed. ESPN.com is reporting that the much maligned Barry Sims is going to be cut by the Oakland Raiders. There are reports that Jerry Porter and Chris Clemons have landed elsewhere.

Chris Clemons had a very good year his only year in Oakland coming out of nowhere and recording eight sacks. The reports have him going to the Eagles who are obviously hoping that they are pulling the reverse of the Raiders signing of Derrick Burgess in 2005. Burgess showed promise in Philly, and came into his own going to two Pro Bowls in Oakland.

Reports have Jerry Porter now becoming a Jacksonville Jaguar. Porter was all potential and attitude in Oakland. He clashed with two of his coaches in Jon Gruden and Art Shell. Letting Porter go is a form of chemotherapy.

Sims being cut is a mixed bag. Sims has been a warhorse for the Raiders and always played his heart out. Most Raider fans don't forgive him for being owned by Simeon Rice in Super Bowl XXXVII and his subsequent false start problems.

With Porter and Sims going, only the kickers remain from the Raiders last playoff run. Sebastian Janikowski and Shane Lecher both joined the Raiders in the 2000 draft and will be the longest tenured Raiders. Ronald Curry will be the second longest tenured Raider, having been drafted in 2002 but spending all but one game of that Super Bowl season on the practice squad.

I would say Jerry Porter going to the Jags (6 yr, 30 mil contract by the way) is more like surgically removing a tumor than chemo. Although, like chemo, we have had the slow, sickening, hair falling out experience of watching him never mature (in more ways than one) and being sidelined with attitude problems. And with Clemons likely out, I wonder who the Raiders plan on bringing in to replace him? Kearse? HA! He is not a freak anymore, he is just slow. Even before the injury he had regressed. Kearse came out of nowhere as a rookie and he has gone back there. Although he seems to fit the mold of the past his prime cast-off that AD brings in thinking he can resurrect his career in a Raider uniform. I reccomended DE Antwan Odom but it looks like we won't be able to afford him now and have other bigger needs like SS and WR. Excuse while I go bang my head against the wall for a while.

Im getting scared here where the hell are we going to get a WR? I know there isnt much available but we need someone...I hope to god we get Gibril Wilson because our D is going to have to be good...Now im saying trade down a few spots in the first round of the draft and get a receiver....Then take another receiver with the second pick...I wanted one of these defensive studs with the num 4 pick overall...Ive changed my mind...I dont care if we draft a projected 2nd round receiver with the first pick just get it done..Dont make me suffer another year with no pass game..We ran so well last year if we just had a little stability in the pass game we could do alot of things...Spend the 4th round pick on a receiver also lord help us we really need it...Why didnt they play the market with Tommy Kelly its very insane..Watch him be injury prone now or something...All i could think of when the raiders signed him is i hope they really know this guy is gonna be great...

LDizzle,

After looking at his #s and his scouting report I agree that Kearse is not what the Raiders are looking for. With the loss of Clemons, I now believe the need at DE is just as important as the need at DT, so Long or Dorsey are just fine with me. Hopefully one will fall to the Raiders.

Why cut Sims? Who will play LT? I know he lost a step but he's the best that we have...until we draft Jake Long?

The Raider's need to draft the kid (de) from Ohio state. 2nd round Left Tackle. I think we'll find a couple of answer's in the draft.

Although not mentioned here, Josh McCown also signed a 2-year deal with Miami.

Believe or not, I'm sorry to see Josh go, although I don't blame him for seeking an opportunity to start. The grit that he displayed last year, as well as his apparent willingness to mentor JMR into maturity, will be missed.

The Raiders should make it a priority to sign a veteran backup as insurance for JMR's first full season; I believe that QB Andrew Walters' confidence has been damaged beyond repair.

Regarding Jerry Porter: Although the knee-jerk reaction to his departure is to say "good riddance", I have the sneaking suspicion that JAX knew what they were doing here. Take note of the terms of Porter's contract; a team typically does not give 6-year deals to "malcontents".

Although Porter's days were unquestionably over in Oakland, I fully expect him to have a breakout year next season for JAX. Remember, Raider fans all said "good riddance" to Randy Moss as well. How did that turn out?

We need to pick up an O tackle or O linemen that can protect JaMarcus, preferably free agent/s. We could use the draft to stack the D and WR's. Jake Long reminds me of Gallery, all upper body and no legs, neither guy can play in space and are forever chasing the speed rushing ends. All they can do is run block. We need more athletic O linemen
