Raiders Owner Al Davis made a subtle, nonchalant statement: Thoughts from a Reader's Side

Stepping away from mocking the draft for a few minutes we have some crack analysis from our reader and first time contributer to Thoughts from a Reader's Side with Captain Blues Buckholz aka Raider Blues. Blues wins the award for the furthest traveled to get here as his post made it in from Afghanistan. The Raider Nation is world wide. Blues takes a look at the statement that Al Davis has made with the roster moves over the last couple of seasons as the Oakland Raiders are rebuilding. He praises the additions of JaMarcus Russell, Zach Miller, and Michael Bush and speculates on the forthcoming draft.

Mr. Davis Made a "Subtle - Nonchalant" Statement...

by Captain Blues Buckholz, US Army

Special to Thoughts from the Dark Side

Many things happened during the draft of 2007 and the debate will roll on for 3 years or more to determine whether we made the right picks and trades. Mr. Davis' actions over the years have resulted in some hating him while others love him. One thing's for certain, most everyone has an opinion on the man. Some call the Raiders draft of 2007 a success:

Top pick JaMarcus Russell

Second Round pick Zach Miller

The aspect I observed during this time was the way Al made his statement to #18:Displayed here is the extent of his Team Captain-Like effort.

The statement was made how we're willing to let #18 go for ( ). While many have raved how the 18 - 1 Cheatriots made the steal of the draft (Take that Snow-Bowl Boys), it was the team of: Al Davis and Lane Kiffin

Who really made the "Steal of The Draft" with: Russell and Michael Bush

Our future to the rest of the league in the nonchalant manner he did making me believe he still has it.

What will Mr. Davis do this year???

Add My First ChoiceChris Long

OR

Sedrick Ellis

Toss Up

Darren McFadden

as a "split-out speed threat" to our already good future. It really depends on whether Coach Kif believes DMac will actually raise our scoring enough to force opponents to attempt to pass against our secondary thus bypassing a Run-Stopper. Dorsey was my pick all last season but injuries and considering his body type have made me look elsewhere.

Just Win Baby!

I saw an interview and some sports writer stated that he had a long conversation with our middle LB not long ago.

He stated that Kirk Morrison told him that the rest of the NFL is in for a huge surprise with regards to M Bush and that he is one of the Raiders best kept secrets. The Raiders already know what they have in Bush and with time so will the rest of the NFL.

Years from now looking back the draft class of Russell, Bush, Oneal and our young TE will go down as one of the greatest drafts in Raider History.

Hey dude, I respect you and thank you for your service bro, truly I see you guys as being the backbone of our country & in particular for me our pride.

Oh and I'm with ya on the picks Except I'd take Dorsey over thin ankles DMAC-FUMBLE any day.

Injuries are part of the game and if our doctors clear him then, I'm all for the guy!!! Dorsey should be a monster for a few years and probably will be less injury prone that DMAC-FUMBLE's skinny little ankles and legs.

You know Peterson had that same knock on him and even though he played great, pro bowl and SH*T...

Yet he GOT injured and was out a few games... This will happen to him again and it will also happen to DMAC.

I could be wrong now... But I don't think so LOL!!!

The statement is two-fold:

You've heard all year how NE made away with the "steal of the draft" and how the Raiders (Al Davis) doesn't know what he's doing. You've heard nothing about Michael Bush. We then heard all year how NE would win the SB and Al Davis has lost it but as fate would have it they went 18-1. We now have a healthy Michael Bush and a bright future. One may contend there's a bit of matyrdom here on Al's part but I see his actions as taking a minus that was the Raiders and turning it into a plus (our future).

#1 The subtle message he sent #18 is that based on his actions we let him go for nothing.

#2 It wasn't NE who received the "Steal of the Draft" and Oakland is stupid, rather Oakland acquired the "Steal of the Draft" with the first pick of the 4th round in Michael Bush

Just win Baby!

Welcome home Raider Blues! I'm in Iraq myself but will be back home in 26 days. I agree with almost everything you said except I think Al D is too imprest with DMac's speed comparing him to Marcus Allen. I guess we'll all see draft day huh.

Steal of the draft? It's all moot until Bush takes the field. Can he play? Nobody really knows until he's shooting the gap. I consider myself an optimistic Raiders fan but the guy does have a rod in his leg. I'm not gonna anoint him the next Bo Jackson until I see with my own eyes that he is an effective RB. I wouldn't let his presence dictate the draft either. If you feel that Darren Mcfadden will be a bigger star over say Chris Long, Dorsey, Gholston, then you take him.

Warriors in uniform...thanks for your service!

If the three, the Longs or G. Dorsey are not available then trade down and get us a LT and a DT, preferably Trevor Laws. We can get by w/o a WR.

I like the picks you got on here double bars, little pun on rank, I always worked for a living if you know what I mean. I like Ellis over Dorsey because like I have said before, do we need a 3 technique or a NT? I say NT. I continue to believe Gholston could have a hard time adjusting to just having his hand on the ground every snap, but would be worthy as well. Good write, and continue to drive on sir, you too Airforce.

Moss out, Bush in could be two of the seeds of our success for years to come but definitely looked like a bad thing last year (at least until SB).

We keep hearing rumors that Bush is the best kept Raider secret in years (ever?), but we won't really know until draft day if McFadden is available and Al passes on him. If that happens, Bush is the man and we can expect great things. If not, it was all smoke.

CLong, Dorsey, Ellis, Gholston - these are the guys we need and I am hoping we take one of them and not McFadden. Because if we take him, it not only means we don't get a DL, it also means we have no confidence in Bush. Ouch..

Changing subjects - what happened to Ellis' draft stock. In my first mock draft he was the guy for sure, now I hardly hear him mentioned. Is it just the old east coast/ESPN bias promoting Dorsey and not Ellis? He was a monster in the Senior Bowl. What gives?

Great job Blues!

I agree that Bush could very well be the steal of the draft, but I'm more concerned with Bowie being able to crack the dime formation, since that's who we drafted for the Moss pick.

Thanks goes out to you, AirForce Raider, and all of the brave men and women serving our country and other countries in the fight for freedom and democracy around the globe.

Close Sr. The Bush is ready could all be smoke but I contend it isn't and Bush is the Man and ready to go with Fargas and Rhodes behind a decent run-blocking line. I also believe this is Coach Kif's area to determine whether DMac can be an asset in the slot - not at RB since we're set already. If Coach Kif determines DMac will raise our scoring significantly from the slot position then we draft him - You draft him because we have a running game / theoretically we have a passing game now (albeit a struggling pass-block line) with J Rus to Walker, Curry and Miller at the TE so the speed of DMac is a given mismatch. A mismatch possibly resulting if scoring often because of his superior speed. If you can utilize the mismatch to raise our scoring significantly then our opponent will be behind and must pass to get back in the game. When they pass they're facing one of the best or the best secondaries in the league.

I'd like C.Long because I believe he'll have the most impact on the NFL and can sell tickets. But since he's likely gone at #4 and we won't trade up then the DMac / Ellis toss up comes into play and if Coach Kif believes DMac really will raise our scoring that much from the slot position then you draft him assuming his off-field antics don't impact the field. Bird ankles and running upright aren't such a worry since he's not to be our RB.

To those who don't understand my story or my supporting post located above, I appreciate your posts. Understand this - my perspective on the 4th round of the 2007 draft received little to no coverage other than negative. Al Davis was made to look the fool and when NE has no championship to show for it and Michael Bush is tearing up the league, Al will have the last laugh. Not bad for a guy who has been said to have lost it. Granted - the premise is Bush can play like we've seen him play.

Just Win Baby!

My thanks also to our troops, come home safely.

When I was in the Army, we referred to Captains as "railroad tracks" based on their insignia. Later, when my sons were little, I took them to an Air Show. One of them asked "Who's the guy wearing the pause button?"

Those of you who doubt if Michael Bush can run are going to be finding ways to disclaim your doubts.

As to Chris Long, I think the NFL should figure out some way to give special treatment to "legacy" players. Long will sell more tickets as a Raider, and that is good for the league as a whole. There should be some way for us to get first shot at him.

I don't know about Bush... Every year the Raiders have the best kept secret in football. Last year we had Terdell "Man amongst boys" Sands... Turned out to be Turdell Sands...The year Shell came back we were supposed to have one of the best O-line's in the league... Nope... Year in and year out, these secrets don't pan out... I hope we could have a sure thing like the good ol Gannon Days, no secrets, just plain good.

Bush is 100% healthy and he is definately a guy who would have been drafted in the first round of this years draft b4 the injury so why not assume he's gonna perform? Even if it takes him a while we did have a top 5 running attack last year and we will improve our Oline in the draft. So now we got a first round type pick in Bush so let's address our other needs and get either an Olineman or a Dlineman in the draft (Ellis or Clady, cuz they'll be there). We have a great fan base that has fans traveling from southern California when finances are tight to see a 2 win team play and Moss doesn't want to be a part of it? He was in tears when he came here because Al bought gifts for all of his children, himself, and his wife. He mentioned he had never been treated that way in Minnesota. He was made a captain. And then he wants out? When life is tough your boys are there for you and he wasn't here for us, that punk ass. Let's not move real teammates like Fargas out of the fold.

Good Point! I know in winning years I didn't even pay attention to the draft or free agency so much. It's like the draft is all we have to look forward to right now. It's like we're Lion fans - imagine they're always like this. They sucked for ever and a day so we give them 3 top name receivers, Joey Harrington and Kevin Jones and they still suck! Then they blame their losing on those players as if they didn't suck before they got them. How bad is that???!!! Raider Nation, promise me we'll never be like Lion Fans.

Recognizing this, I've attempted to place a positive spin on our situation.

Just Win Baby!

I'm not sure how much blame the Raiders got in the Moss trade. The Pats were actually stupid for giving up a 4th, cause we would have had to cut him if there were no takers. The scumbag was holding us hostage. A poor team like ourselves could not afford to have that much money invested in a player who refused to play, or when did refused to try. He was gone one way or the other. That was truly addition by subtraction, few could disagree.

As far our"steal of the draft" I sure hope you're right! After day one of the draft last year I was praying that we would take a chance on Bush with the 1st pick on day 2. He may never return to form, but you have to take the chance. This guy was as sick (if not sicker) than Mcfadden when he was healthy. Well we got him, now I hope we give him the chance to show us what he can do.

Oh yea, good job sonny I almost forgot. We may have already gotten the steal of the draft. There is talk that Oren O'Neil may take over for Griffith as early as this year. Griffith is one of the best in the biz. O'Neil was a hell of a pick!

Hello to everyone. A very important observation to make about this whole Moss thing. No one can seriously say letting him go was ever a mistake even if he did win the super bowl. Why do I say this? Because the guy did not want to stay. It is that simple. If he stayed, he would not have produced because he had made up his mind he wanted out and had no respect for the organization. When he was at his press conference with the Pats he did mention something to the effect that he wanted to play for a "professional organization". I saw that as a statement against his former team. This was the best thing Oakland could have done no matter what the outcome. Story put to bed !

Thank you for your service Blues. I like your choices. I'd be happy with any of the top 4 D-lineman. This is bad rumor season. Teams spread rumors about top picks so they will drop to them. All 4 of these guys have been getting slammed lately. Last year it was AP and his bad collar bone that caused him to drop to 7th. I've been checking out Michael Bush on YouTube and I like what I see. Check it out. For those of you with a slow connection like me, the trick is to let it play through once. It will load the video on your hard drive. When you hit replay, it will play at full speed. Enjoy!

First of all, Captain Blues Buckholz, I would like to give thanks to you and all of the brave men and women in the armed forces. You are the reason we get to sit here and debate the little things in life. My prayers are with all of you.

Now I would have to agree with one of the other posters on the whole Moss trade. While I do think Randy Moss is one of the best receivers in the game today, I also agree that his performance would not have been there for our Raiders. Bottom line is that he wouldn't have played well for us. I believe that the Bengals are about the find out the same thing with Chad Johnson.

As far as our draft goes, we have so many needs that anything that happens should help improve us. Personally I would love to see either Jake or Chris Long is Silver & Black but i dont think they will be on the board. I haven't followed the draft articles that much because honestly it seems to be all smoke and mirrors this time of year. My opinion is that we should skip D-Mac. He is a great player but i don't feel that he is our most pressing need.

Keep the faith alive Raiders Nation. We will bounce back.

I'd like to thank all of you for the support and encouragement you've demonstrated on this blog.

I seriously just completed organizing a chapter on training foreign troops for the book and wrote this article as almost in decompression mode. When you get out in the world and see what's going on, sports becomes just that = sports You realize there are more important things. Sure it's fun to analyze and talk about the Raiders - it is freedom to me.

DMac as a need? I can't say it enough - if he actually will raise our scoring enough we have no other need. We will simply outscore everyone. Problem is it didn't work for the Chargers back in the day with Fouts, Winslow, Joyner, Jefferson, Muncie and crew. If he won't then address the need with C.Long or Sedrick Ellis. Dorsey is still suspect with injury or he'd be a great pick. Coach Kif is the only one who can make this selection and his Raider coaching future is likely riding on it. As is Al's since he's up in years and needs a winner soon.

Just Win Baby!

Bro, there has never been a Bo before Bo... So get a little more realistic with Mike Bush... I'm with RBlues.

Who really knows, but I truly believe Bush will be a hard ass get us some yards the likes of 1st down, 2nd down.... Move the Chains... 1st down, 2nd down.... Move the Chains...

And then to add to the feast. Just when they least expect it, we give'm a lil dose of Fargas With a long little Bomb or 2 to chase it down with!!!

Heck just thinkin about it is makin me hungry.

DMac would be the answer in the flat. Bush, Bush, Fargas is great mixed in with a little Curry : ) Walker it down the field then it's Miller time!

Now that should make you hungry.

Just Win Baby!

This has Red Zone scoring all over it!

Flood Left whatever...Play action...DMac on a curl to the opposite side of the field. Who is going to guard him? Whoever is left and that'll be a slower LB one on one = TD DMac. What don't play the run with Bush to challenge DMac and = TD Bush. Goal Line you say Uh J Russ is huge and can run = TD JRuss. Riddle me this D Coordinators How do you stop it?

Just Win Baby!

AP is an upright runner asking to get hurt again. Nobody but Nobody is Bo and I'll take Marcus Allen after Bo. If we needed a back in this draft I'd take J. Stewart fast as Mendenhall but a Horse!

As of today, it's looking more and more like Chris Long will be a Raider.

The offense is so young at the skill positions, and adding McFadden will only make it younger. I personally wouldn't be disappointed with McFadden. He would change the dimension of the offense in more ways than just rushing. It would be fun watching him running, catching and throwing TDs on ESPN highlights.

However, I think the Raiders try to inject some youth on the D-line. If things go-

MIA J.Long

STL G.Dorsey

ATL M.Ryan, D.McFadden or trade.....

Then we don't pass on C. Long. We could possibly trade out of #4. ( IMO Gholston not worth #4 )

Another little known "secret". D-Mac ain't the only rb who can throw td's. Bush was high-school player of the year in his state as a passing quarterback, not a running qb. If you ever saw him play in high school like I did, you wouldn't be surprised if he could outgun Russell. An idea about what a genuine freak of nature athlete he is, he was all-state in both offense and defense and received votes at SEVEN different positions. The guy is a scary good football player.

I would trade the #4 plus CB Fabian Washington to Dallas for both first round picks #22 & #28 plus a second, and a player(LOLB Bobby Carpenter)? I would also trade down with a team such as Carolina who may want to trade DE Julius Peppers to move up in the top 5. At #12 we could then draft OLB Keith Rivers. I think a trade with the Pats is possible. I believe they are targeting Gholston and wants him badly. We could still draft DT Ellis at #7 plus add a second round pick. It's possible that the Raiders could have a 1st, 2nd, and a 3rd in this years draft. I believe getting DT Sedrick Ellis & a 2nd round pick is way more value then DE Chris Long or DE Vernon Gholston. Vernon Gholston seems more like Vernon Davis as far as being a workout warrior and not a real football player as their measurables would suggest? We need to cool it on all the Gholston talk.

Hello all. I don't know if anyone realizes the true importance of this years draft and upcoming season? If the Raiders, especially with Kiffins' approval, don't draft wisely and win (at least make the playoffs)-he will be gone next year. I'd hate to say this, but possibly to a team like the broncos. The reason I say this is Shanahan made a trade with us (Gerard Warren). He must like Kiffin and he knows he can't beat us in the coming years. He will snatch Kiffin up if/when AL fires him ? I don't believe the bullcrap, that Al and Kiffin are enemies. Why would Al pay $150-$180 million just in signing free agents,so he can fire his coach and then later have another set of disgruntled players to cut or trade in a couple years when they are in their new home in L.A. I hope this doesn't happen! If 2008 turns out 8-8 or 9-7 or 10-6,maybe Kiffin gets an extension on his contract

Players that could possibly be traded on the Raiders-Jordan,Routt or Washington,Sweigert,Walter, all the tight ends that don't play,Warren (i actually wouldn't get rid of him). I SAY ALL CAN PLAY AT A HIGH LEVEL. Jordan would be good in a two back system,Routt and Washington are just getting started,Sweigert needs just a little pass rush to keep him in position,Walter needed everything (ol/dl/coach/off.system that works, why didn't he start a game last year? I like Jay Richardson at right DE,but he might go too! I say keep all except Jordan and Washington(he has had a bad attitude since he was drafted-they only drafted him because he was the fastest CB. Routt was the Raiders real cover corner they wanted.

The Raiders can't trade Fabian Washington to Dallas because they are getting-i don't want to even write this goofy nickname"PACMAN" Jones. They can trade him to New Orleans,Cincy, our Favorites trading partners in Houston or any team that has a need for a CB AND WANTS TO MOVE UP IN THE DRAFT,THAT IS NOT IN OUR DIVISION AND IS BELOW THE #4 PICK. We can't trade Jordan, because we benched him when he had a bad back and ran him two times the rest of the year. We can't trade Rhodes because of the strong possibility that Fargas or Bush may get hurt (McFadden at #4)

Dorsey is Sapp/J. Long is Ogden/C. Long is M. Gastineux/Ghoulston is Kearse/McFadden is Adrian Peterson/Ellis is H. Long. Which pairing doesn't belong . I believe the Ghoulston/Kearse. They are too similar for me to take Ghoulston at #4. Also Kearse never stayed dominant and was always hurt . C.Long will be gone/Dorsey will be gone/J. Long will be gone. That leaves Ghoulston and McFadden. The Raiders should take McFadden or trade down. I would take McFadden at #4/Rubin at #104/Polumbus at #169/Spanos at #213/Kinder at #226
