Oakland Raiders Draft Wrap: Darren McFadden the linchpin to any draft grade
The 2008 edition of the NFL Draft extravaganza now resides in the history books, and the Oakland Raiders have added the names Darren McFadden, Tyvon Branch, Arman Shields, Trevor Scott, and Chaz Schilens to their roster as draftees. Several undrafted free agents were added after the fact to no fanfare, some of them may pull a Tommy Kelly or Chris Carr and make the team, but they are the long shots. The draft picks, on the other hand, are the guys who were picked by Al Davis and Lane Kiffin to make the Raiders better. The question on everyone’s mind now is do those five players make the team better. The true answer won’t be known for at least three years, but the gut check feeling around the Raider Nation right now is mixed.
Darren McFadden is the linchpin of the draft
The key to this success or failure of this draft class rests on the shoulders of McFadden. As the fourth pick in the draft, he is the one who gets the hype. He is also going to be the one who will be getting an astronomical paycheck in the near future. He is the name that is going to be most remembered, so if he is a bust this draft class will be thought of as a failure even if Trevor Scott goes to a couple of Pro Bowls. With McFadden being the linchpin, he is the key to any grade that will be given to the Raiders draft.
McFadden:
Talent: A
Need: D+
From a talent standpoint, it is difficult to argue with this pick. McFadden has the potential to be the gamebreaking type of back that the Raider Nation has not seen in far too long. On the other hand, running the ball was by far the strength of the Raiders’ offensive attack last year. The Raiders were woeful at stopping the run, and Glenn Dorsey a top rated defensive tackle was still on the board when the raiders got McFadden. This caused a rift in the Nation when the pick was announced.
McFadden should help the Raiders put much needed points on the board, and give them a homerun threat that hasn’t been seen in Silver and Black since Napolean Kaufman sped through during the Clinton administration. Add in a rotation of Justin Fargas and Michael Bush the Raiders should be a near unstoppable force running the ball.
Thoughts from the Dark Side took the pulse of the Raider Nation at Ricky’s yesterday and got interviews with several fans. In case you haven’t seen it on the video page, here is a montage of several takes on the McFadden pick.
After McFadden, the Raiders took the rest of the first day off and didn’t pick again until they traded up in the fourth round to land defensive back Tyvon Branch.
Branch:
Talent: C+
Need: D-
The Raiders were already overstocked with corners to the point that they would trade former first rounder Fabian Washington shortly following this pick. They already had DeAngelo Hall, Nnamdi Asomugha, Stanford Routt, Duane Starks, and John Bowie. Branch is expected to contribute in special teams as a gunner and possibly as a return man.
Arman Shields
Talent: C
Need: B-
The Raiders upgraded their wide receiver corps over the offseason with the acquisitions of Javon Walker and Drew Carter. The Raiders added Shields who is a big and fast receiver, but is coming off of a knee injury.
Trevor Scott
Talent: C-
Need: A+++++
Finally, in the SIXTH round the Raiders addressed their need at defensive line. Scott only played defensive end for two years in college, having been a tight end. He did get 19 sacks in those two years. He has some potential as a pass rusher, but the jury is out on this one.
Chaz Schilens
Talent ?
Need: B-
Who? That name looks like it has a couple of typos in it, even though it is spelled correctly. He is a big and fast WR from San Diego State. With the selection of two wide receivers in this draft, that says that the Raider brain trust doesn’t have a lot of faith in Johnnie Lee Higgins.
Overall, the way this draft played out was a head scratcher. The Raiders needed help stopping the run, but only made one attempt at defensive line help. The offensive line is a question mark and they didn’t take a flier on any offensive line help. Trading up in the fourth to take a corner is probably the move that made the least sense of all. This is the time for the Raider Nation to hope for the best and cheer the new additions on to victory.

Pitiful draft in my opinion. We addressed our needs in the SIXTH AND SEVENTH ROUND? What was Al on on Day 2? The McFadden pick pissed me off to no end because i thought we needed a dt or gholston but at least he looks to have a promising career IF we pay him what he’s worth. Tyvon made no sense at all, we needed a DT, SLB and a WR. We could have picked Xavier Adibi who would’ve really helped us out or Red Bryant who is a huge space eater. Then we finally take care of our needs of WR and Dline with another ACL injury and 2 nonames. bad draft

Not that bad man!!
I wasn’t a McFadden fan before draft, but it is obvious that he makes us better…Bush and DMC will rock the league!!!
I feel bad for Fargas a little he will lose his job!!
Tyvon will be S not CB and mainly a KR\PR so it was a need, but i agree with you…we should get Red Bryant or Dre Moore there.Shields will be a good WR, i think he was a much better choice in the 4th then Higgins last year in the 3rd.Scott the DE will be something special…he playes DE only for 2 years so he is raw but he is a natural pass rusher i’m high on him…he will be a nice pick like J-Rich last year. The WR in the 7th could be a really good playa if Javone and the coaches can teach him.His size and speed is awesome…
And we forget everytime that we got D.Hall with the 2nd pick!!
The coaches are high on Kelly and Sands so we should be high on them too.
The same with the Oline. If coach Cable says we got all the guys we need then i believe it!
If Sands,Harris will play like they should than we will be OK!!!

Here we go… 1000 “Draft Experts” now want to grade the draft. This simply CANNOT be done until 3 - 5 years after. Want examples? Here are the Raiders drafts from ‘02 to ‘06:
2002 - Eight players selected, including two #1s. One player left on the team (the last pick) - Ronald Curry. Grade D-
2003 - 10 players selected, including two #1s. Three players left on the team, including two starters (Fargas, Asomugha) - Grade B
2004 - Nine players selected. Three left on the team, one starter (Gallery)- Grade C
2005 - Seven players selected. Three left on the team - One starter (Morrison) - Grade C
2006 - Seven players selected. Three left on the team - two starters (Huff, Howard) - Grade B
If you can get two or more starters from a draft, you’re doing good. If you keep more than four or five players on your roster after three or four years, you’re doing GREAT.
Look it up and do the math - Asomugha is an excellent example that grading the draft too soon is a fool’s mission.
As for 2008 - the addition of D-Mac we hope will help. I personally thing it was an excellent move. My hope is It’ll both help JaMarcus and give us our own version of LT for years to come. But, as I’ve shown above, only time will tell.

RaiderRoss,
What he said. Tubular! Well done, dude.

Look im happy with Dmac on our squad, but how does Al not adress the D-line. I can at least understand why he didnt do anything for the O-line maybe they know something we dont maybe Mario Henderson will turn out to be pretty good. But we have nothing for the D-line he left us with the same we had last year other than the fact Sapp retired. Al will be calling Sapp begging him to come back lol! The only Temporary solution i can think of is try and sign Anthony “Booger” McFarland for a veteran minimum but he’s injury prone, still should some what help us with some veteran ledership if nothing else.
And im not to worried about our O-line because like Rolni said i think Cable might know what he’s gonna do with them. Plus it will help alot that for the 1st time in a long time the O-line will probably have the same guys as last year. I can see Kwame Harris starting at left tackle, Robert Gallery left guard, John Wade center, Cooper Carslile right guard, Paul Mquistan or Cornell Green at right tackle. and you never know maybe Mario Henderson will steal one of their positions at tackle. But i see Henderson as more like a project maybe next year because i think he was only a one year starter in college he needs to get stronger before they throw him out there with the big dogs. Our D-line on the other hand im worried about we’ll have to wait and see but i say give McFarland a phone call at least.
Hey Rob offcourse Chris Long and Dmac are gonna say their happy about being on their squads their getting paid $$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$. Who wouldnt be happy receiving a FAT paycheck from Al. Dont be fooled he would’ve said the same if the Jets wouldve taken him. But i dont think Chris wanted to be a Raider and i also dont think Howie wanted him to come to us. I honestly wouldve preffered to have seen Glenn Dorsey in a Raiders uniform i think he wouldve been a better fit, plus Dmac’s mom didnt hi want him to come to Cali she wanted him in Dallas but whatever. Well the Raider Nation gotta hope for some miracle for us to be able to stop the run this season. I dont understand why the hell Al would trade up in the 4th round to get a CB a fucking CB were stacked at that position. Maybe he can be a beast a KR and PR.
GO RAIDERS!!!
April 28th, 2008 at 9:22 am
I still think Justin Fargas should be the starter for the season, then we bring Dmac and Bush off the bench later in the game throw Dmc some screens or line him up at WR maybe run some reverses! Lane will know what to do Dmc is a bigger stronger faster version of Reggie Bush. Trust me Lane and Cable will know what to do with Run Dmc!!!
GO RAIDERS!!!
April 28th, 2008 at 9:36 am
for those who think dmc was not a need answer this question. Do we need touchdown scorign ablitiy? You know the answer is yes and that is what he brings not only that but he will alleviate alot of pressure from Russell which will help him get more comfortable and progress at a faster rate.

Although it’s true that you can’t officially label a draft with any type of grade until after three years, it’s easy to label a draft based on current need. Patrick, I think you did a fine job here.
While McFadden is going to be an outstanding Raider, I challenge anyone to convince me that it’s better to draft your 6th running back when you only have 3 defensive ends and you were 31st against the run the previous season, while ranking sixth in running the ball.
Later today, I’ll be doing my best to explain my thoughts on this draft, but I warn that it won’t be as complimentary as some will want.
April 28th, 2008 at 10:49 am
You have to be optimistic, but you also have to wonder at the 4ths. I think McFadden will be great (being optimistic); I hope the offensive line will hold up and the defensive line is worth the money they paid for it. The two things I worry about are how many picks we will have for the next few years, because you can’t keep running on fumes with the picks - you need numbers, and good ones, not projects. The other thing is the coaching continuity. If Kiffin, Cable, and Ryan can stay together for 3-4 years then things will work out well. Otherwise, disaster looms.
April 28th, 2008 at 11:19 am
Ya know guys; right now I consider this to be a one week grace period - people are going to whine profusely about our picks. After a week I hope that will have ceased.
Whether you are for or against; there’s no use in crying over spilled milk or confessing that “I told ya so” long after a week has passed.
Life moves right along with or without us. We’d be remised if we didn’t do the same.
Almost every post, article, or thread here has some truth and agreeability to it. I am also aware that the way that some of us are put together; we must find an outlet to vent.
If there’s any consolation to the general temperament and disposition of some our attitudes; think back to one year from this day. What were the New York Giants’ blogs, forums, and mediots exclaiming? Exactly; they have some of the harshest fans in all of sports. They are the epitome of Bad Luck Schleprock; to them, the sky is always falling, up until last February.
Bottom Line; the sun is bound to shine. Honestly, do you not believe that we have repositioned ourselves to launch a full-scale onslaught? Some of the opposing run offenses may initially think, “This is going to be like taking candy from a baby.” Fine – that’s where they’re going to lose half the battle; it’s called over-confidence. What are opposing defenses and special teams going to be thinking initially? “Holy S@@T – and that my friends is called under-confidence.
Regardless of what other are saying, doing, and writing; I for one am going to savior and thoroughly enjoy the hell out of this ’08 season. You can cut, paste, and file this article for future reference.

That last guy was a freakin maniac. He “hates” Jordan because he’s f@#kin soft? How is Jordan soft? He was injured is all. Granted he never had a great ypc but he isn’t soft.
Everyone else seems to have the same opinion as I do. That being that we should have gotten a Dlineman (Dorsey perhaps) or traded down. But Dmac will make our backfield better. One thing no one is mentioning though is that Dmac could be a complete bust. As was pointed out in the draft coverage, he seems to prefer to try and go through guys rather than around them. And since he is not known for his power, he just gets tackled in that instance. Also no one is mentioning that he had more fumbles in the last three years than ANY OTHER RB IS COLLEGE FOOTBALL. That will only get worse with better and faster guys chasing after him in the NFL. If he can have the fumbling coached out of him then he could be huge in the zbs. Unfortunately so could just about any scrub off the street. A scrub that won’t cost this team 60 mil and 30 mil guaranteed.
I can’t believe we just GAVE the best player in the draft to the hated Chiefs.
I sat right by Shield Head at a game once and that dude is a nut job. And not following college football is no excuse. One should at least study up on the possible draft picks as well as know what the Raiders need in regards to who they drafted.
Then in the 4th round we get ANOTHER corner. The other position we don’t need. Not only that but we traded two 7th rounders to move up four spots to get him. WTF?! Kiper really seems to like the guy but I agree with one Raider fan who said that there was quite a few good Olineman still out there at that pick and we should have gotten one.
And to trade Fabs for a mid 4th rounder?!!!!!! And OF COURSE we got a receiver! AD always uses the last few picks on receivers that don’t pan out. Curry is the only one that ever panned out and he was a QB not a receiver. Lucky break there.
Waiting until the 6th round to draft a DE is unacceptable.
I give this draft a C+ and it is only that good because of the potential of CB Tyvon Branch, DE Trevor Scott and WR Arman Shields.
April 28th, 2008 at 11:28 am
Patrick,
About the move that made the least sense of all. We all knew it was coming. All we had to do was look at the 40 times for corners in the draft, take the fastest guy, and you knew Al was going to pick him. Thats exactly what happened with Branch. Hello 40 time!! Al is always good for a couple picks like this.

Well, I’ve been reading tons of articles, and have been watching what the “Experts” have to say, and fans as well and here’s my asessment:
First, I want to address calling Al Davis names like “stupid” “ignorant”, etc. Al Davis is a self made multi-millionaire, that has carved his name into almost every major building block of what we know as the NFL. He’s as hard as a coffin nail, stubborn, and very set in his ways. He only knows one thing to do, and that’s the A.D. way…right or wrong, none of us are in his shoes and judging him is nothing more than banter. When anyone here EARNS ownership of an NFL team (including myself) then we EARN the right to judge him. Until then, we need to try and UNDERSTAND him. To me, there was no better player in the draft at any pick top to bottom. As for the Raiders stable of backs…they’re all nearing “old” by NFL standards (except Bush & Eschemandu) - but there are teams that NEED a seasoned RB right now. They just became very valuable bargaining chips (Rhoades, Fargas & Jordan).to help shore up that defensive front.
Also, the offensive line could obviously be better, but the type of zone blocking that’s being installed doesn’t require a Jake Long, or Tony Ugoh type of player, as much as likeminded, well paired linemen. Denver hasn’t had a Pro-Bowl O-Lineman that I can remember in years…but they keep the QB upright for the most part, and the run game thrives. That mentality of workhorses vs superstars is the same type of reasoning that propels the Colts defense year after year. It’s system based, and can click before you realize it without “standout players” at the positions on the line.
Defense needs addressed for sure, but we have plenty of talent at skill positions to deal for that - which can be accomplished fairly easily. Obviously there’s always room for another Dwight Freeney, Chris Long, Michael Strahan, etc BUT a powerful offense can go a long way to help a struggling defense (2003 Colts) and that’s what I think Al Davis is trying to accomplish. Last year the stage was set with Russel (Manning), this year the next piece of the puzzle comes with D-Mac (James) Speedy recievers (Harrison / Wayne). Now, whether it meshes the same way remains to be seen, but it’s a very sound blueprint to success and dominance in the AFC for years to come…that I’m very excited about. Unorthodox, maybe, but if it works…the sky is the limit.
Other things to keep in mind, this is Russels first year as a starter, but he’s probably the most physically gifted QB to ever play the game. Andrew Walter is no slouch, didn’t he destroy every Collegiate record set by John Elway? Michael Bush (pre-injury) was noted as superior to every ‘great’ back INCLUDING Adrian Peterson, you don’t get that good without hard work…and that same work ethic WILL bring him back from this injury. Now that’s a pair of QB’s, and a pair of RB’s that SHOULD be as prolific at their positions as any tandem in the games history. We’ve got the best pair of corners you can hope for, awesome safeties, strong linebackers…I would say the Raiders needs at the HARD to fill spots are filled. The speedster wideouts should be able to get open at will with that RB tandem scaring defenses to death, so I think it’s nowhere but up from here.
Patience and understanding should make people realize that this team is getting stronger by the day…and people can say what they want but Rome wasn’t built in a day…but it was breathtaking when it was finished.
April 28th, 2008 at 12:36 pm
Next year this time it will be interesting to look back and see how these guys are doing.
April 28th, 2008 at 12:48 pm
On another note regarding Fabian Washington: This is where a complete understanding of the game is important. He’s a great player, no doubt. But he’s #3 on the depth chart right now, even though he’s #1 or #2 quality…ie: unhappy player. Washington DESERVES to be more than a backup corner or nickelback…and here’s where economics comes into play. The Raiders staff knows that 4th rounder may or may not be, dollar for dollar the same caliber player as Washington. Chances are “not” is the most likely…but he’s not here drawing a large salary, and unhappy as his new role as backup CB or nickelback. Now Branch is going to cost a LOT less, and give you a LOT MORE effort, with faster speed and upside in the role of backup CB or Nickelback. He has the ability to be a day 1 left corner on almost any team in the league…you have to remember that we’re dealing with humans. He’s an unproven rookie that’s going to be happy in his new role, versus a proven veteran (getting paid a ton more) who’s going to be disgruntled at his diminished role. I think that move made more sense than 99% of the people give credit for.
Sure, we could have got more out of him…but it would have taken quite a bit of time to shop it. There are only a handful of of teams left that play a true man-coverage defense and they’re pretty set already…trading Fabian there would only create the same situation he just got out of and the new team don’t want it and neither does he…so that would be a hard trade to shop. And who do you trade him for? A 35 year old lineman with a huge salary that’s close to retirement anyway? Why would a team be willing to let go of a guy (look at the Jared Allen trade) if he’s that valuable? Instead we have some more cap room free to explore some younger players to develop and have the upper hand in shopping for needs positions instead of teams KNOWING we HAVE to get rid of Washington to ensure harmony in the locker room. It makes total sense. And if the extra 4th rounder works out in whatever position he ends up, it’s a huge bonus. We get a freebie instead of someone elses baggage and Al Davis gets to dictate the money spent instead of taking a pre-existing contract.
Have faith boys and girls…nothing is ever so bad once it’s in the past.
April 28th, 2008 at 1:48 pm
Man Raiders4life i love what u wrote… Damn while i agree with u on the Al part that were nobody to judge him, u got also gotta understand u dont get a shot at a player like Glenn Dorsey. What if he becomes the next Warren Sapp, but then again what if Dmac becomes the next Marcus Allen or Bo Jackson. We wont really know for at least a year. I just think that we need to keep Justin Fargas, Michael Bush, and obviously Dmac. I think we should get rid of Jordan, i also dont really wanna get rid of Dominic Rhodes he’s a veteran a super bowl champion he could mentor our young backs. But then again Rhodes has gotten in trouble before. But i think if JaMarcus Russell can be solid and accurate and the receivers can stay healthy then our running game could be AWESOME!!! I think the key to our passing game will be if Drew Carter can step up and be a solid number 2 receiver across from Javon Walker now that he is out of Steve Smith’s shadow. If your wondering why we have Ronald Curry, well Curry has always been better in the slot. Curry could be what Wes Welker was for Tom Brady. Curry in my opinion has the ability to be one of the best slot receivers in the NFL if given the oppurtunity and having a solid QB. Javon Walker obviously if healthy can be one of the best WR’s in the league and Drew Carter is 6′5 runs about a 4.3 40 yd dash so he can also be a solid deep threat and can also be taken advantage of by Lane and J. Russell especially in the red zone!
GO RAIDERS!!!
April 28th, 2008 at 1:58 pm
Raider4Life again you make little or no sense. We DAMN WELL do have the right to judge what Al Davis does first of all. We may not be “self made millionaires” but we are also not NFL players and we (including you) judge them all the time too so don’t be a hypocrite.
Washington not only was not “great” but he wasn’t the Raiders #3 corner, Routt was. Although he did deserve more than a mid 4th rounder because he can start on a team which uses a zone as opposed to a man defense. It seems that AD realized he could get his Fabs clone in Tyvon Branch in the 4th round so he grabbed him and THEN began shopping Fabs. If Tyvon would have been gone we would not have traded Fabs. If AD would have shopped Fabs before that we could have gotten a 3rd rounder.
And yet again Raider4Life you make yourself look stupid when you can’t even spell the names of the Raider players. His name is RHODES. At least you stopped calling Fargas “Vargas”. Baby steps I suppose.
April 28th, 2008 at 2:01 pm
whoops my bad on Washington not being our nickel corner. He was last season. I was thinking of how it is since the acquisition of Hall. Routt is our 3rd corner now.
April 28th, 2008 at 2:19 pm
I agree with you Ldizzle but at the same time we cant really judge Al or the picks until we see what happens and how good we do this season. I honestly think we can have something special look at our backfield Fargas, Bush, and Dmac. The only problem i ever saw with J. Fargas is with his running style he puts his body on the line to much every play which can be good and bad. And we really dont know what will get from Bush. I also dont think Dmac can get the full load of the carries he fumbles to much and the fresher he is the better. Al please sign Dmac in the next week or two dont let this be JaMarcus Russell part 2.
GO RAIDERS!!!
April 28th, 2008 at 3:30 pm
LDizzle, not sure why you’re coming at me so aggressively, not that it really matters…you’re ignorant, your views are without reason or knowledge, and you basically are just running your mouth for the sake of hearing your own voice. If the best argument you can come at me with is to ridicule Fabian Washington, or me for giving him perhaps too much credit…or misspelling Dominic Rhodes name (I don’t recall ever calling Justin Fargas ‘Vargas’ but notice how F and V are very close on a keyboard and it’s an easy fumble) then you should just shutup while you’re ahead.
I’m entitled to my views, just like you are and I never made a single argument directed at you, or showed disrespect to anyone. I can tell just from paying actual attention to your ramblings that I’ve forgotten more about this game than you will ever learn, so arguing with you is pointless and counterproductive.
Now that’s been addressed, I will reiterate that nobody has the right to judge the legacy of Al Davis (or anyone else successful in business for that matter) because we’re not related to that business. Stop trying to criticize him for what he’s doing and appreciate what he’s attempting to accomplish. It’s pretty simple, if you don’t like what he’s doing then go be a 9ers fan or something. This is a great organization that’s been built upon diverse thinking, unorthodox approaches to what others term ‘the norm’ and if you know the history and appreciate it then you understand exactly what I’m saying. If you don’t have that, then you’re not really a fan. Pretty simple, buy season tix to 9ers or the chargers or something, but don’t attack other fans, REAL fans just because their views differ and you can’t understand them. My posts were an attempt to put things in perspective for the logical thinkers that might not realize the business implications of what’s going on, and your own ignorance has you mad enough to kick your dog. Pretty funny stuff.
I remember Al drafting that sorry troublemaker that held out on Tampa to play baseball for more money. Everyone was mad at him because he allowed him to play without practice, didn’t even come play in every season game…no training camp, etc. Troublemaker, money hungry, terrible guy, etc etc.
What those people didn’t understand, is Tampa guaranteed him that visiting them wouldn’t jeopardize his college scholarship for baseball, which was his first love and priority and Tampa KNEW it. They also knew he was an ignorant kid that didn’t know the NCAA rules and he TRUSTED them. They took advantage of him, he was ALWAYS baseball first - just turns out he was a freakishly tremendous athlete that could excel at anything he did.
Why sign a guy that caused so much trouble seemingly over money, that don’t workout with the team, held out an entire year, etc? Because Al KNEW something that we didn’t. Al did his homework, investigated because THATS what a successful businessman does. He gambled and it payed off, that’s how you do business. He didn’t care what anyone thought, he KNEW he could make something good out of a bad situation.
I’m sure you’re probably wondering who I’m talking about, but that doesn’t matter - a few minutes on google should let you know. REAL fans already do though.
Either appreciate it or hate it. Buy tickets or don’t, but don’t criticize a man for doing business the way he does until you can actually accomplish 1/10th of what he has is all I’m saying.
I’m a fan, I appreciate every move this organization makes to make my team better and I will support my team 100% regardless if I agree/disagree understand/don’t understand because I know the people making those decisions know more about it than I do….Al don’t do my job, I don’t try to do his. You should probably try to find one, then you’ll understand this part of my post too.
RAIDERS 4 LIFE
April 28th, 2008 at 3:53 pm
i would bet that we didnt take olinemen or more than a late d end because tom cable probably believes he is set at o line and told davis so and rob ryan is probably confident in kelly and the rest of the d line and being that both of these coaches have been quite succesful(cable turning around the o line and ryan with the 2006 defense) i think they know what they are doing, kiffin is an offensive genius and assuming davis lets him do what he wants with dmac i think once the season starts we wont question the pick
also as a sarcastic side note it would be ironic if dorsey got hurt after all the talk about his injuries and we rape the chiefs but i think we will rape them either way
Basically the logic for the draft is summed up in the phrase:
Just win baby!
April 28th, 2008 at 5:22 pm
Yeah, I would say you’re probably right on target. 2006 we had a brutal defense, last year there were a couple of things that were a factor: 1 Warren Sapp showed up about 50lbs lighter than his normal playing weight. Sure he was healthier, faster, etc but definitely less effective against the run. Nobody expected that. 2nd, and I think most importantly, most of the rush yards that go against our defenses numbers had to do with the opposing team being up late in the game and run run run run run run run run checkdown run run run run run. Those are circumstantial numbers, whole different story when we have a viable offense that can convert 3rd downs consistently and keep our defense off the field…where it belongs resting.
Something else too, with the moves made in the offseason and especially the acquisition of Deangelo Hall, that’s 9 guys left on D to deal with that run. We still need a high safety, but in the past few years we haven’t had a garden variety “strong safety / free safety” setup. Last year, the coaching staff played with the idea of keeping the safeties on their own sides of the field, basically alternating the strong safety role. I’m sure the issues with that will be corrected this season, and the ‘confusion’ at safety will cause defense to give up some big runs.
I don’t want to seem like I’m trying to downplay the skills of Dorsey, he’s a tremendous player. But for every DMac, there are 20 Dorseys…maybe more. After all, he’s not the same defensive caliber of Strahan, Freeney, Lawrence Taylor, Long, any of those guys. He’s not even going to be as effective as Jared Allen…he was a huge headache for us. We didn’t give them Shawn Merriman we gave them the best COLLEGE player at his position available…the NFL is a whole different world. That’s not to say he won’t get his rocks off a bit, but there are a lot bigger threats out there. KC didn’t improve their defense, they traded Allen for Dorsey…for the most part, it’s the same player just gonna be there a few more years and he can be taken advantage of for the first few.

Are Raider4Life and LDizzle related? ‘Sure’s hell seems like it. I’ve only been lurking here for a minute. Nonetheless, I can’t help but notice the mini-cat skirmishes. What’s the dealio? Both of you have brought up several interesting perspectives. Is somebody banging somebody’s girl or somethin’?
I’m not sayin’. I’m just sayin’.
And what’s with infatuation of this spelling thing? If you can correct it; then it was conveyed well enough that you comprehended it. I guess this is “Akeelah and the Bee” or somethin’.

The last cat in the above video had his buzz on. Some one should have commandeered his brewski, promptly closed his tab, fixed him a plate of ribs and burgers, and politely sat his a## in the corner somewhere. LMFAO.
I’m jesting. Dude was just feelin’ good and living-it-up. ‘Sure would have been nice to attend.

I don’t think Mcfadden is Adrian Peterson. I don’t know about you guys but I knew Peterson if healthy (which is still an if) would be a superstar. But if he is another Peterson then Al was right.

inonewordraider,
McFadden’s on Mercury. Peterson’s on another planet; Jupiter - the largest in our solar system. At this point, the jury’s still out on Run DMC; so there’s no comparison (whether Peterson is healthy or not).
In fact, I don’t know why people are so quick to compare things (probably why America has such a high divorce rate - spouses comparing spouses with others).
In due time, the skill or lack thereof will be revealed. Like you, I sincerely hope that DMC’s success transfers to McAfee Coliseum. I’m tired of LT & LJ; I’m ready for some DMC.

I dunno Pat, I was confused too when that schmeckle Dizzle came at me - especially starting off with “Once again you make yourself look stupid” or however he worded it. I don’t know that clown, never had any exchange with him at all that I can recall (and had only posted one or two pists prior to him singling me out). Maybe his wife read my post and decided I was brilliant and witty and decided she WANTED to do me or something and that got him going…dunno.
My sentiments exactly though, this is a discussion forum for Raiders fans…discussion not verbal war and we all have a common ground (or are supposed to). He’s probably a Patriots fan still mad about Jack Tatum obliterating Darryl Stingley or something.
Cheers Raider Nation!

alright guys calm down. i don’t consider myself a draft expert, i was merely stating my opinion. i thought we should have gotten dorsey or reached for ellis because i felt the need for a good dt. dmc and bush does sound good but something about mcfadden spooks me. i see leg injuries and jail in his future along with good numbers and many new ways to execute offensively. i think xavier adibi wouldve been way better a pick than tyvon branch
