Coaches of the AFC West from an Oakland Raiders Eye View

OK…OK.. I know I said that the Special teams edition was the last regluarly scheduled post in the “From a Raiders Eye View” series. I didn’t really want to do the coaches, and even tried to pass it off to Rob aka Eggo. But, after looking over the comments, I decided that I had to do it. Lane Kiffin is the anomaly in the AFC West being young and in his first go around. Mike Shanahan, Norv Turner, and Herm Edwards have all been around the block a few times. This is a difficult one to judge as the other three have long resumes to look back on, whereas Kiffin is only in his second year as an NFL coach. Well, here goes, how the coaches of the AFC West stack up.

Denver Broncos:

Mike Shanahan has something that no other coach in the AFC West has: A Super Bowl ring won as a head coach, and he has two of them. Granted, at the time he won those he also had John Elway and Terrell Davis to fall back on. Since Elway and Davis have departed, his “genius” label has become tarnished. He is to the point where he could end up on the hot seat in Denver, but he doesn’t seem to have the horses to make a run at this point.

OUTLOOK: Look for Shanahan to get his team up for the games, but don’t expect it to translate into wins.

Kansas City Chiefs:

Herm Edwards led the Jets to a few playoff appearances, but is one of the most overrated coaches in the league. He says that “You play to win the game,” but it seems that his teams never win the big games. This rebuilding project in KC is his real test. If he gets the team to somehow win six games, I will take back the overrated comment.

OUTLOOK: With all the young players in KC, it will be “You play to learn the game.”

Oakland Raiders:

Lane Kiffin survived the rumored offseason chopping block. He took over a team in disarray after the 06 season and had them looking respectable by 07. Now the key for him is to transform that respectability that he got in 07 into wins in 08. His lack of a resume and 4-12 career record as a coach is what has him behind Herm and Shanahan. He looks to have the potential to be a great coach, but it remains to be seen whether that potential can translate into results.

OUTLOOK: After surviving the chopping block, the pressure on him will be intense. He has to come out winning, and should be able to accomplish that.

San Diego Chargers:

Norv Turner is a proven loser as a head coach, last season notwithstanding. Turner stunk it up in both Washington and Oakland before taking over a team ready to peak in San Diego. The Chargers won last season in spite of Turner, and not because of him. In fact, the team underachieved through the first chunk of the year before finding their stride.

OUTLOOK: Look for him to have one more good season based on the pure talent of his team, before his coaching skills or lack thereof start taking the charge out of the Bolts.

    First!

Leggo my eggo did you mean ego? Since we’re on the grammar police kick and all…

I happen to like Coach Kiffin I didn’t like Shanarat and definitely didn’t like the Bolts Coach so I’m content with what we have. The team is looking more like something he can work with and hopefully we’ll keep improving the roster over the next couple years cause we’re sitting with too many what ifs but it’s progress.

    Just Win Baby!

Patrick, I don’t know how you figure Herm Edwards is overrated, given that he’s barely even rated. He’s a much better coach than he gets credit for. Has he won the big game? Not too many of them. Has he gotten his team to the big game? Yes–he has never gone back-to-back seasons without a playoff appearance, and getting the Chiefs to the 2006 playoffs in spite of losing their starting QB was nothing short of miraculous. He’s not proven he’s an outstanding coach, but he has enough of a track record to believe he’s a good coach–he doesn’t usually get credit for even that much.

I’ve said many times before that I think Kiffin’s an outstanding coach and I truly mean that. Best in the AFC West? Well, arguably, Shanahan’s got the bling, but I think as of now, Kiffin has potential to be the best. Problem is, he’s not given any power to run the team his way and that will always limit his capability to be the coach he is capable of. It’s hard to coach when your owner demands that you build a team purely on speed, even if your coach doesn’t necessarily want that.

It will be really hard to grade Kiffin’s job in Oakland since Kiffin was not allowed to bring in his own coaches or make all the decisions regarding personel. It seems to me that Kiffin should only be graded on the offense and special teams since AD will not let him touch the defense.

I dont belive that Kiffin doesnt have his own coaches maybe he wasnt able to fire Rob Ryan, but i know Tom Cable is his guy and every other offensive coach… I also think Kiffin could be a great coach he took over arguably one of the worst teams in the history of the league and like Patrick said has them looking respectable… At least were competive now… He did what other coaches couldnt do win a division game… If Al Davis fires Kiffin he will regret if for a long time… I dont think that Her, Edwards is overrated i just dont think he’s in the position to bring and keep the players he wants… I dont think he wanted to get rid of Jarred Allen… and i also think he must have wanted a marqee free agent either this offseason or the past but with Carl Peterson it will be very tough to do… Mike Shanahan WAS a good game i think the Broncos will suck for the next couple of years until the start getting younger as a team… If Rod Smith wouldn’ve gotten injured and had to retire he would still be playing for the Broncos, and come on when is time for John Lynch to go… He was great in his prime but everyone has to go sometime and i think he’s overdue… Last but not least Norv Turner i dont have much to say, other than who cant win when they inherit a team that was built by another coach and is now stacked… The only thing he has to do is just hire and fire coaches, bring in players, stand on the sideline pretending he cares, and go to the pressconferences… Until he wins the superbowl with the Chargers he’s the worst coach in the divison…

But hey Patrick im not trying to correct you or anything but i could’ve sworn Norv Turner won a SB ring in Washington as a head coach?

I like Kiffen’s coaching style and I think he does have some decision making power. No owner in the NFL allows his head coach to make all the decisions without his input, and all owners override decisions at times. Why should Al Davis be any different? Everyone is always down on Al Davis, but don’t underestimate him. His teams have won more AFC championships than any other team in the league.

Shanahan - he is on the way out. He has done NOTHING without Elway and the fans are tired of him and his 5 million dollar salary. Edwards did not do much in NY, so I was glad that he came to the AFC West. He talks about rebuilding but this is his third year. This the year he should see the dividends of his rebuilding and you will not see it this year. Again, trading Allen was taking two steps backward. Turner is labeled as an offensive guru. I don’t see it. In Dallas he had an All-World team. At Miami, they had a ‘D’ and a field goal kicker and would score 9 points a game. At Oakland and Washington the record speaks for itself. At the very least, I don’t think much of him as a head coach. Kiffin, I like alot. Hopefully, he stays around a while. It will be interesting to see how the Ryan situation turns out next year. If the ‘D’ plays well, do we resign Ryan? If the ‘D’ sucks like last year, then we wasted another whole season and Kiffin will prove to be right in wanting to bring in another coordinator for this year.

  8. Dylan says:

    June 14th, 2008 at 11:24 am

I questioned trading Gruden, but am now seeing why we did. Obviously he wouldn’t have re-signed and we got more than he was worth. Cost us a ring, but he can’t develope talent. Other than that I’ve always trusted Al. If he fires Kiffen however, I’ll never forgive him. We’ve got our guy, now let him be the coach. He can groom talent, be strict yet respectable. He’s got the balls to stand up to Al, and seems to understand what it takes to win. If Al gives him the keys we’ll be on top for a LONG time. I think he’ll be at least as good as Madden.

  9. pat T says:

    June 14th, 2008 at 11:39 am

Well DJ if the D sucks you cant totally blame Rob Ryan, because he’s running Al Davis’s system in the sense is that Ryan prefers the 3-4 instead of the 4-3 but we dont have the players to run it every down(mainly a nose guard that could holp us and stack the runs through the middle up) … He also doesnt always like to leave his corners on man-man but thats what Al likes, and im not sure if he doesnt blitz because he doesnt want to or because Al wants his front four to put the pressure on… Because i see we have a great speedy LB in Thomas Howard who would be great if given a chance to blitz more in my opinion… I also would like to see us run the 3-4 defene on 2nd or 3rd down and longs and stand Derrick Burgess up and bring him of the edge with a full head of steam Burgess is very tough to stop at full speed and on the other side Thomas Howard coming off not many tackles will be quick enough to get a hand on him… Also now we have Gibril Wilson at safety i say we line him up real close to the line of scrimmage on some plays and bring him off the edge onto the QB’s blindside that right there could cause alot of fumbles, which would obviously help our offense giving them the ball back quicker and in better field position… I think we have the right players… And if Ryan has control of defense then we should be fine but the players need to perform for themselves, the team, and their coach… Most if not all defensive players really like him as their coach… I think our defense will be greatly improved, well at least i hope….

    Amazing.

You not only put Lame above Norv, but along the way you backhandedly insulted your Sultan, Al.

Last year at this time, anyone recall what ALL OF YOU GUARANTEED???? (wait….was this board around last year at this time??…anyway, I digress) You all GUARANTEED that, with Norv at the helm, the Chargers would be in LAST PLACE..a playoff game? NOT POSSIBLE!!.

By week 4 of last year, you were all celebrating being masters of the universe, toasting the demise of the Chargers, because of Norv.

And it turns out he was one game away from the SB.

Now, YOUR OWNER didn’t just hire the man, but kept him around for more than one year.

So, if you’re running the “He’s a horrible, horrible, head coach” how do you explain Al hiring him AND keeping him??? You can’t have both. Either Al was wise, or he’s lost it.

Saying SD won IN SPITE of Norv is weak. They couldn’t do it with Marty..it’s not like Norv took over a team who’s been tearing up the playoffs…so how is it Norv gets zero credit??

    OH…I get it.

IF you give Turner his just due, then Lame is at the bottom of the list…I see.

Yeah, awesome logic there, Patrick, lol. With logic like that, I need you to do my taxes.

Lame’s “potential” along with his 4-12 record definitely trumps Norv’s 13-5 record of last year.and his win’s against he Titans and the Colts in the playoffs…sure, I can see that.

Here’s a really unfortunate reality check for ya….Norv is viewed as arguably the BEST OC in the league..even Raider fans copped to that when he was with the Niners…and now he’s taken the Chargers deeper in the playoffs than they’ve been since the Niners beat them in the SB.

It appears most in the NFL knows what Raider fans desperately want to avoid believing..Norv’s a good coach, period.

Washington? Took over a horrible team, with a horrible owner in Snyder butting in..with Raiders took over a horrible team with the Ayatollah of Owners butting in.

Lame can’t carry Norv’s jock. (cue in a meek gay comment from some kid)

LOL, mikey is roaming the boards again. again he shows his ignorance. Norv is such a great coach because martys team he took over was one win from SB, lol, so does that mean that Callahan is better than Norv cuz he got us to the SB, and where is that great Callahan coaching now lol, mikey go buy yourself some football sense before you post. you sound more like an idiot every time you spill your dribble. Yes great coaches ride the coattails of their predecessor lol, do you even know that Norv said he wasnt going to change anything. Chargers were built by Marty not Norv. and Kiffin is gonna show you the definition of a great coach, it means building a team to greatness not inheriting one dufus. go back to football 101, your preschoolness about football kills me lol.

Patrick you should have stuck to the players and not listened to those who wanted a coach comparison. Shanahan has the SB wins on his side but Elway got him those rings. He has done nothing without Elway. Not only that but a coach is only as good as the players who are on his team and how well they fit the system. IMO none of the AFC west coaches are great. At least Kiffin isn’t a proven loser like Norv, a guy who has had nearly a decade to win and hasn’t such as Herm Edwards and a guy who has never done anything without his HOF QB Elway behind center in Shanahan. This list was rather a waste of your energy Patrick.

Besides, we all can see that it looks to be the Chargers then the Raiders with the Chiefs and Broncos fighting over the cellar anyway. I would actually give the Broncos the edge over the Chiefs because at least they have SOME stability. The Chiefs are a mess that will take a LONG time to clean up.

mike is just a typical niner fan with no real facts just half assed opinions. worry about your own team there sonny, the reason their offense was dead last is because they had ABSOLUTELY NO offensive line. and what have they done to improve it? again, ABSOLUTELY NOTHING. thank you.

  17. Patrick Patterson says:

Dizzle- Thats why I hesitated to do it. The coaching list is almost inverse to how I expect the teams to finish. Besides, as you said there are so many factors in what makes a great coach. Bill Belichick is a perfect example, he sup nearly run out of Cleveland on a rail, but is seen as great in New England.

  18. pat T says:

Mikey Norv Turner is a proven loser… But he does help young unproven QB’s alot… He was with your team righttttttt? Damn not even Turner could help Alex Smith? WOW! You guys are bunch of losers… So your right Al did hire Turner and kept him around for 2 seasons… He brought in Norv because he thought he could help and imporve Kerry Collins as a QB… The first season, then the second season he realised that Kerry couldn’t do much without some clear weapons so he got Randy Moss and then when Norv couldn’t make it there then Al knew he couldn’t make it anywhere… So he goes to a team thats already stacked at most if not all positions… And he wins 2 playoff games with them… Personally i think Marty was a much better coach than Norv he was the type of guy that all the players could talk to they all loved him… He went to the Chargers when they were losers and he turned that franchise around… An when Norv was with the Whiners he was one of the best offensive coordinators right? Well key word there WAS, he was before he went to the Whiners, so now Alex Smith doesn’t even know if he’ll be the starter next year… Yeah great offensive coordinator right because he helped Frank Gore rush for over a 1,000yds righttttttttttttt? And because he helped Alex Smith throw as many TD’s as INT’s… But still your team sucks BALLS! MIKEY FACE IT YOUR A LOSER, NORV’S A LOSER, AND THE WHINERS ARE LOSERS! YOU COULDNT CARRY MY JOCK! BITCH! HAHAHA! LOL!

Again, you avoided the point, both of them.

Raider fans GUARANTEED Norv would destroy the Chargers, and go no where. No playoffs, no division title, nothing. He took them further than they’ve been in decades.
They’re also a lock on the division again.

Again, how to you state Kiffin, with his sorry record, bad coaching, and tumultuous relationship with the coaching staff/owner is above Norv?

That’s asinine. Yes, yes, I know…takes huevos to state something that the weak, meek, and dim abhor.

Mike49er: WAY TO CRAP ON YOUR GERIATRIC, ANCIENT, OWNER, clown.

You state Turner SUCKS..and you even laugh at the notion of Callahan coaching..YET YOUR OWNER NOT ONLY HIRED THEM, BUT KEPT THEM AROUND FOR TWO YEARS…

Hell, he fired Art after one year…you know..the guy he stated ‘I always regretted firing.”

How stupid are you exactly, not realizing you, on your own, just bitchslapped your owner?

I’ll say it again, because you seem to be REALLY slow. You all guaranteed Norv would destroy the Chargers.

Instead he made you look like fools.
Not that you haven’t done a fine job of that yourself.

Now, just for fun??? Why don’t YOU explain how it is Al hired and kept both of those coaches that YOU consider a total joke?
    ———————————————————————
Yes great coaches ride the coattails of their predecessor

Mike49er: Guess you’re not as stupid as you sound. You’re right..GREAT COACHES do take over what’s there..and bring it TO THE NEXT LEVEL.
Slap a duh on you, foolish boy.
    ——————————————————————————

and Kiffin is gonna show you the definition of a great coach, it means building a team to greatness not inheriting one dufus.

Mike49er: Great coach? lmao. Guy was a statue on the sideline. Said NOTHING..no coaching going on. Team in total chaos, and there’s Lame…blankly staring..SAYING NOTING TO ANYONE. His stupid mistakes happened all year long..from ‘Let’s get rid of Moss for a 4th rounder..yeah..that’s a smart move” to his complete asinine handling of Russell, where everyone on the planet knew there were only a half dozen other games he should have got playing time, to watching Sapp have a complete meltdown on the field and get Unsportsmanlike conduct penalties, back to back to back.
What did Kiffin do during all of this…NOTHING.
What did he say to Sapp as he left the field? NOTHING
What did he say to his D coor as this was going on? NOTHING.

Let’s keep in mind he’s a lame duck coach, where your owner wants him gone, where the over/under on when Al’s going to fire him is midseason, where Kiffin has repeatedly made it clear he’s saying “F**K YOU AL” with his slap in the face wearing of anything but Raider coaching gear…he’s a train wreck in the making.

What Kiffin is looking at is his FUTURE..of how much money he can milk from Al before he goes elsewhere.

That’s why he’s not stating what everyone knows..that Al Davis is a clown.
At least you and him have something in common.

Goody for you..Now shut up before you hurt yourself.

Mike49er: Oh..I see..it’s not that Denver and KC had bad years overall???? It’s not that all teams, sooner or later, for whatever reason, have losing seasons? It’s that the RAIDERS did better, and not that those teams regressed?

Isn’t if fun when you can just make up things to make you feel better??? Let’s not discuss both of those teams records last year..instead let’s just state ‘Kiffin did it.” Yeah..that works….IF YOU’RE A SHEEP.

Ask Gruden..he can explain it better, lol.
ONE OF TWO THINGS IS GUARANTEED..and I’ve said this for YEARS on many Raider boards. Coach does bad he’s fired. Coach does mediocre, gets extra year. Coach does well, as soon as his contract is up he moves on to a sane organization.

Just the way it is. If you weren’t such a sheep, you would know that, Patricia.

Until he wins the superbowl with the Chargers he’s the worst coach in the divison…

LMAO First it’s “He’ll destroy the Chargers”…then it’s “they’ll be in LAST PLACE WITH NORV THERE”… then, after some wins, it’s “they’ll NEVER WIN THE DIVISION” …then as reality set in, you little sheep all changed your tune to “the chargers will NEVER win a playoff game with Norv there”…and now?? Mikey, Mikey, Mikey come on go have a good time with the kids dont make me make you look like an idiot…

Mike49er: In other words, I just torched your ass, and you have nothing in reply.

Yes..read it slowly…IF YOU HAD SOMETHING you would have replied to the welts you got above..instead you’re just running the “Don’t make me make you look like an idiot” take?
In that case, we’ll just leave it that I left YOU looking like one, and you can just surmise that had you WANTED to you could return the favor??
    Yeah, LOL…that works.
    ========================================
Theres no need to push it you do it that fine yourself… Two quick question though why do you leave more comments here than on the Whiners blog?

Mike49er: Niner fans don’t run stupid takes that need correcting. You guys do. Good news is it’s free, not to mention deadly accurate.
Here’s a hint. Take MY comments about the Raiders, and go post them on any Raider board. You’ll be considered “astute”.
    Trust me.
    ———————————————————————-
And how do you find this much time to talk all this crap if you have kids?

Mike49er: For some thinking and typing happens quickly…others need “comprehension” time, which, obviously, as you well know, adds up :)
    ==========================================

Like OGKUSH said why talk shit and not defend your team…

Mike49er: I always defend my team. All YOU and OshKosh say is “Worry about your Niners.”
Tell you what…YOU bring it, and I’ll delve into it.
Save the “Tell me why” take. That’s what those who have NOTHING resort to. I’ll detail the Niners strenghts and weaknesses, and those that request it realize it’s best they just shut up, and meekly wander off.

Feel free to state anything you want. If I disagree, I’ll let you know.

You know, like I do here. :)
    ———————————————————————-
And the only reason Jon Gruden left to the Bucs is because we traded him not because he chose to leave…

Mike49er: LMAO..uh…WRONG. See??? This is why you need me. Other Raider fans don’t want to say “WTF ARE YOU TALKING ABOUT”. But moi’? I can say it, because I don’t have to worry about hurting your widdle feelings.
    Pay attention, twaddle.
After your idiot, head up ass owner went public..RIGHT ABOUT THE TIME GRUDEN’S CONTRACT EXTENSION CAME UP, Al stated the reason the Raiders fell apart in the stretch was because Gruden was distracted by the Notre Dame offer, and Al was waffling (much like Eggo does :) ) on how much Gruden was worth. That PISSED OFF Gruden. By the time it came down to discussing dollars, Gruden had already decided to leave. When asked by reporters “How much money will it take for you to stay in Oakland, Gruden replied, and I quote “THERE ISN’T ENOUGH MONEY TO MAKE ME STAY AND COACH FOR THAT MAN”.
Gruden made it CLEAR TO THE WORLD he wanted to go to TB, nitwit. TB made it clear they wanted him. Al had no choice but to either let him leave or do what Al dispised, which is Chucky coming back and doing what Al NEVER lets a HC do, which is RUN HIS TEAM. It’s no secret Al resented the fact Gruden became the face of the Raiders, and Al would have none of that.

Now..don’t you feel stupid for your above take?
You’ll learn, lol….most do, sooner or later.
    ————————————————————————
Al Davis could fire 100,000,000 coaches and we would still be better than the Whiners at least until you get a non-bust QB…

Mike49er: Again, Patty, you’re confused. Take a brief wander down history lane..last 5 years? You’re WORSE.
Last 10 years??? YOU’RE WORSE. Last 15 years?? Lol..yep..YOU’RE WORSE. 20???? Way..way…WAY Worse. 25 years??? NOT EVEN ON THE SAME PLANET WORSE..lol…don’t compare teams.
    You’ll just get a migraine.

what a typical forty winer fan, yer all the same, just a dumb raider hater.. worry about yer own team there son, they havent done anything since the steve young era …

Mike49er: True..And the Raiders haven’t done anything since..since…damn..that’s a LONG time ago, since.
Last time Raiders won a SB? Wasn’t gas like a buck and a quarter a GALLON?? Big hit release was WarGames? lol…Hell, last time the Raiders won a SB, I think was about the time CD’S WERE INVENTED.
    =======================================
the reason their offense was DEAD LAST in 07 was because they no offensive line.. and what have they done to fix it? ABSOLUTELY NOTHING KID. so again, stop ragging on the raiders and worry about yer crappy team. thanks.

Mike49er: Wrong..AGAIN. Niners offense was last because we lost our starting qb after 3 games, and found out his backup, Trent Dilfer, had cement toes, and couldn’t hit water from a boat. Was so bad Nolan stupidly try to put back in Smith, who not only was still injured, but ended up getting surgery.
Yeah, our offense sucked, but was a lot more problems than just the O line. Oh..we got our qb back, switched oft injured LT Jennings to RT, put in stud Joe Staley at left tackle..have back the NFC rushing leader Gore..signed a couple of solid receivers.

    And you’re welcome.

oh yea ps GO ALEX SMITH ITS YER YEAR BABY! LMAO. every year i hear “alex smith is showing strides in practice” hahah thats about the only strides he has… practice throws.

Mike49er: Practice?? You have to get off those drugs, buddy, your memory is going. Prior to getting injured in 07 Smith won 3 of 4 games. Year before was Smith’s first full year. Was the first qb in 49er HISTORY to play every down for the year. Just missed the playoffs by one game. qb rating was 75 for the year. Considering that Ben Roethlisberger was rated at 75, as was Michael Vick, and that Eli Manning and Hasselbeck were also at 76 and 77, and that Bret Farve was at 72, I’m not going to complain all that much. Now, gosh…I wonder..where was the Raiders qb rating for ‘06??? DEAD LAST, at that awe inspiring qb of 54. lol…and who was that killer qb? WALTER.

Now, if you want to look at completion % for Smith’s only full year, he was AHEAD of Manning, McNabb, Hasselbeck, Farve, Vick…and WAY ahead of Walter, lol.

    What else would you like?
How about yards? MORE THAN Jake Delhomme, Vick, Leinart, McNabb, Hasselbeck, Young, ..
In other words, Smith, in his first full year, wasn’t as good as some, was better than a lot.
See, I can deal with a qb in his first full year having better stats than a Manning, Vick, or Farve, or even Ben. I can deal with his stats being close to a hell of a lot of others who did better, marginally, in many areas.

Like I said, prior to getting injured against Seattle, Smith beat Denver, Rams, and Cards, while losing to Pittsburg.

I call that progressing. I call his ‘06 season a big step from his rookie handful of games that he got thrown in to “learn”.

Now, considering the Raiders were AT THE BOTTOM for most categories, I’ll let YOU figure out which teams qb SUCKS, lol
As well, I let YOU figure out that if your current ‘ROOKIE” QB who honestly looked lost last year, goes down??? THAT GUY WHO SUCKED IN ‘06 IS WHO A LOT OF YOU ARE SAYING WILL DO JUST FINE.

You and I know differently, though…lol…don’t we?
    ———————————————————————–
i smell another ryan lief.. just another forgettable bust of a QB

Mike49er: don’t you hate it when I shove your words down your throat? :) I mean, that silly huge buildup on how horrible Smith played, but as you JUST FOUND OUT when you went and checked, my numbers are correct..which makes you a first rate boob for running what you just did.
    =======================================
that just got a contract extension no less… very sad indeed.

Mike49er: *sigh*…uh..Patricia??? WHO just got a contract extension? You’re thinking of the other Alex Smith, or Will Smith.

told you…you need me. Someone to help you figure all this “football” stuff out.

Now, if anyone else has any questions about the Niners, I’ll be sure to help you wherever I can.

Oh…btw..if Russell goes down, who’s the Raiders qb again?
    ROFLMFAO…yeah…thought so. ;)
