Thoughts from the Dark Side

Raiders Javon Walker needs to finally learn the FACTS

This is the only dancing that Raider Nation wants to see from Walker

Alright, before I begin this torrid rant that’s sure to strike a nerve of some readers, let me explain that I’m not making a judgment on what Javon Walker did and didn’t do that may have caused what happened nor am I saying that he deserved what happened. Simply put, no matter how ignorant you are, nobody deserves what happened to the Oakland Raiders receiver. That being said, facts are still facts, and there is no substitute for common sense.

FACT: NOTHING GOOD HAPPENS AFTER MIDNIGHT…usually

Ok, player. I added that little caveat to all you players out there that can remember at least one good experience in the hours preceding the dawn of the day and after midnight. The fact is, the odds of something bad happening begins to exponentially increase in the wee hours of the morning (which some would consider the ‘end of the night’).

Now for anyone under 25, I’m able to give them the three strike rule. If you can’t learn by the third time or by the time you’ve turned 25, you’re never going to learn. After you’ve turned 25, you should be able to learn from your mistakes and move on from them. As Albert Einstein once said, “Insanity: doing the same thing over and over again and expecting different results.

Is that what Walker is doing by going to night clubs and spraying Dom on the crowd? On the HBO program ‘Real Sports’ it was reported that Brandon Marshall and his cousin spraying Dom on the crowd is what led to Darrent Williams being killed in a drive-by shooting. In the interview, he stated that he hadn’t washed the clothes that he was wearing when Williams was killed so that he could always remember how fragile life is.

Mr. Walker, I think that you just got another reminder Monday morning. You’re 29 years old, so you can’t keep living like you’re 19. You have money, you have fame, you have ‘hangers-on’, and you still don’t get it. You also have a $55 million responsibility to the Oakland Raiders and the Raider Nation isn’t going to let you forget that. I hope that you’re alright, and will be able to play out your entire contract without any further injuries. I also hope that you are REALLY ready for the start of the season, because if you’re not the treatment Josh McCown got last year will look like fan support.

FACT: IT’S NOT POLITE TO THROW(SPRAY) YOUR DRINK ON PEOPLEunless of course they’re your teammates and you’ve just been crowned champions of something…anything

Who in their right mind wants to get ‘dressed to impress’ so they can go to a club and get drenched by alcohol? I don’t know about any of you, but usually (for the players…again) I want my alcohol consumed by me not worn, free or paid for. Of course, that’s no excuse for violence is it?

If I’m drinking, it probably is. I’m not going to lie to any of you, if you’re my drinking buddy, there is little you could do or say that’s going to bother me too much. If you’re not, and you mess with my drinking buddy, ‘fuhgettaboutit,’ I’m coming after you. The thing is, I wouldn’t let my buddy get involved because MEN handle their (or their buddies) business one on one.

Not everyone is as civilized as I am though. I try not to judge, but all you punks out there that think it’s cool to team up with your buddies to jack someone, I can’t help but think that you’re nothing but scum. In my mind, I think you’re as bad as a man who beats women or a parent who beats a child.

That doesn’t excuse Walker completely. Although there is no real good reason to retaliate in the way that the Raiders’ receiver was beaten, Javon should have enough common sense to know better. I keep hearing, from pro athletes, how they are targets for violence and that’s why some of these scuffles happen. Maybe, but you don’t have to be a pro athlete to do something stupid like spraying your drink at people. Is it me? Do I just not get it? For those of you saying, “Yeah Rob, you just don’t understand,” you’re not invited to any party that I’m having in the future.

FACT: FLAUNTING YOUR WEALTH CAN LEAD TO INJURY OR DEATH…usually, but Kanye West didn’t write a song about gold diggers for nothing.

Forget Kanye West for a moment, and better yet, forget about any gold digger that you’ve ever known for a moment. It’s been reported that Walker was tossed for $100k in bling and $3 grand in cash. I’ve been to Las Vegas and I’ve pulled out my best shine at the clubs, and carried a three inch wad of bills in my pocket to flash…err…do $1 bills count?

Anyway, I get it. You’ve gotta’ look your best for the ladies right? Even the non-gold diggers get impressed by that stuff, usually(that’s for all you ladies…call me). My advice though, wrap a few ‘hunnies’ with some of my ones and wear some nice looking, ‘cheap’ jewelry. Of course ‘cheap’ to Javon is still probably enough to get him ‘ganked’ in the right neighborhoods, but $100k? I don’t care how much money you have, a $100k is still a $100k and you’re not partying in a room full of millionaires like yourself. Get a knockoff!

FACT: OTA’s, WHILE NOT MANDATORY, ARE STILL REQUIRED WHEN YOU’RE NEW TO A TEAM…usually

Here at TFDS, we really hate to generalize so I threw that ‘usually’ in there, but in Javon’s case there’s no excuse. I’ve been reading from posters, ‘Who cares what he does on his vacation?’ Not me, I could care less as long as he’s on vacation. For those of you that haven’t seen the Braylon Edwards NFL commercial, let me explain. According to Edwards, football season is ‘13 months’ long, meaning that as a player you’re always preparing for the next game, even when that game is six months away.

For all of you that think that’s pretty harsh to hold someone to the ‘no vacation’ standard, I’ll tell you what I’m going to do. I’ll give Javon some vacation time. Let me take a look, hmmm…Ok, yeah, I’ll give him from one week after the last game of the season until the first day of March. Does that sound fair? Even if the Raiders make the Super Bowl, he gets four weeks and a $100k ring that he can sport while dousing himself and others with Dom.

Tell you what Javon, if you’re really good at your workouts and you can run an obstacle course made by Jerry Rice without puking your guts up, we’ll throw in a week prior to the start of training camp. How’s that sound? If you do all of that and you’ve caught 100 balls for 1,000 yards or more the previous season, then let’s make it two and the Raiders will pay your hotel bill. Hey, that sounds like a really good deal to me, what do you guys think?

PLEASE JAVON, DON’T HURT ME

I would’ve put ‘HAMMER’ instead of Javon, but I wanted to avoid the PC backlash that remark may have caused, and I didn’t want to read about how insensitive I am to MC Hammer (for associating him with Javon) or to Javon (for bringing up that he got ‘hammered’ and then got ‘hammered’).

As this story broke, it took about a day before I finally looked up from my PC, took a deep breath, and pondered the consequences that Walker might not play in 2008. As I was pondering this, Patrick called and started talking about the implications and that’s when it hit me, “We are [BLEEP]ed!”

The simple fact is the Raiders are not prepared for Walker to come up lame this season. While they may have drafted the next great wide receiver, or been smart enough to pick up Todd Watkins, there is no way that you want to go into a season with a question mark at offensive line, quarterback, and receiver.

So please Javon, think about it before you decide to call up your friends and take them all to Vegas. Follow some good advice or don’t go out at all, because the Raiders need you right now. They need you healthy, happy, and ready to go for 80 yards and a touchdown. So far, it only looks like you’re going for booze, b*tches, and broke (broken bones that is).

Just keepin’ it real here at TFDS

yes javon just needs to watch his back, and that goes for anyone with a nice bank account that they love to flash around to the WHOLE WORLD… I have a good feeling about the guy as being a good receiver for j-russ, despite of what peopple are saying “he should be training instead of partying” blah blah blah, people fail to realize that you can get to vegas from oakland in about an hour and a half… whats so wrong with partying for a night and then getting back to work either next day(which would be harsh) or the day after?

Great Article. I agree with you. There is nothing wrong with partying, however hehas responsibilities for himself, teamates, and Raider organization. The money he got to come to Oakland he better be in the top 5 in all receiving categories and greatly improve our offense.

Thanks for the article! Open and honest - when I thought that he had a broken Orbital… i actually thought “holy s_ _ _! … We just lost our most talented and explosive receiver. I think I just learned what “I” really am expecting of this guy - A LOT in 2008. Meloncholy when I say this is the class of our WR core

yes he does need to be more responsible, i think it will finally get thro his head that he’s not invincible, no matter how much money or how many yards/tds you get.

Javon Walker is exhibiting all the signs of a young man hellbent on pissing his life away.
Thanks to “the genius”, he is financially secure and can party to his hearts desire.
Perhaps he’ll surprise me and live up to his potential but I’m not counting on it.

Man just happy to see J.R will still have his #1 receiver… Now Al and Lane can finally take a deep breath and know that those 50 something million didnt go down the drain… Javon Walker and the Raiders caught a break… and now its time that Walker stops pushing his luck cause next time he could get killed… But i dont think theres anything wrong with a couple of nights of parting, the dudes young… But when it comes to training camp he better be ready to catch a ton of balls from J.R… And when the season starts hopefully he can develop into that #1 speedy receiver were missing… And hopefully Drew Carter can step up to the #2 position and let Ronald Curry play in his best position where he’s deadly the slot…

    GO RAIDERS!!!

And if this doesn’t show him that he’s not invincible than nothing will… And remember after this he wont be getting a HUGE contract like this, he’s running out of chances… Green Bay traded him and then Denver released him…

    GO RAIDERS!!!

Nice article and thanks for saying everything I have been thinking for two days! I put this quote up front because I went to the first few games last year and the treatment Josh got sucked. I never thought I would see a home team do that to their own quaterback, well untill I really watched him play.

How about the fact that spending $15,000 on Champagne to spray into the crowd makes you a serious idiot. I don’t care how much $$$ you have, you don’t get wealthy and stay wealthy by conducting yourself like a blank check waiting to happen (see Mike Tyson).

It is going to take me quite a long time to lose the opinion that Javon Walker is immature, foolish, lacking commitment and will be broke faster than he became wealthy.

$100,000 in jewelry? Being decked out in $10,000 of Prada sportswear and shoes would gain my respect but $100,000 in jewelry just shows that you lack style, class, and taste…except if your taste is ghetto corner drug dealer…but most women (the ones without gold teeth) in Vegas are not looking for impala with spinners, they are looking for South of France Villa.

It is going to take a lot of yards, broken tackles, first downs, touch downs, and wins to get me back on board with Javon Walker.

    ————————————————————-
Mike49er: What would be wrong with that? Oh..gee…I don’t know..maybe the fact when you did the same thing last time YOU’RE FRIEND DIED IN YOUR ARMS???

Maybe doing that EXACT SAME THING again is a really stupid PR move????

Maybe that you should be at your job, where most others are..or at least most others who want to make a good impression on their new boss?????

It’s called making the right choices…something Walker has made QUITE CLEAR that he’s incapable of.

As stated above, who the hell wants to get dressed up, looking good, only to have some clown spray stickyass champagne all over you?? Just because HE wants to advertise money doesn’t mean anything to him?

The minimum he deserved was to get clocked. No, not beaten or robbed, but anytime you just blatantly disrespect people by dumping YOUR alcohol on them, what did he expect?

Think about it (I know Oshkosh, it’s tough for you)…you’re sitting at a bar, and some guy just decides to pour his beer over your head.

Chances are that guy is going to get a fist.

Walker is an idiot. Full blown idiot.

What hapened to Todd Watkins?!? Did he get cut or something?

  14. azraider37 says:

    June 19th, 2008 at 11:58 am

Yea, get your ass to camp, Javon. These guys have no responsibility. Anyone arguing that Walker should have not been partying in Vagas the week of OTA’s, I agree 100%. But remember this, he was doing the same thing just hours after one of the worst losses in his team (at the time) history. He was out partying hours after the lowly 49ers beat them in Denver to bounce them from the playoffs. Come on dude, the community that is responsible for paying your salary does not deserve to see you partying in publice after a devistating loss.
NFL players get plenty of time off. I get 3 maybe 4 weeks a year, and make about $799, 950, 000 a year less than Mr. Walker does.
One thing I do have to disagree with is the midnight deal. Wraping it up at Midnight is more for 60 year olds, not 29 year olds. Everyone should be allowed to hang out and party, just don’t be a complete idiot!

  15. azraider37 says:

    June 19th, 2008 at 12:01 pm

That was supposed to be “public” in the last post.

Umer Waris - If Watkins was cut, that’s news to me. As far as I know right now, he’s with the team and performing well.

  17. Umer Waris says:

    June 19th, 2008 at 12:58 pm

    Rob,

It was just the way you wrote it saying “or been smart enough to pick up Tood Watkins” made me think that he got cut and wasnt picked up by us or something. Sorry about that.

By the way I was thinking could there be a trade between Asomgha and Haynesworth? With DeAngelo coming into play, Nmandi is going to be wanting a piece of that money cake that free agents like Hall have been getting. It may sound weird but maybe Hall couldve been a replacment for Asumgha. Considering the fact we need a DT, the trade may not be that far off for Haynesworth?

Umer - Not a problem. I highly doubt that Nnamdi is going anywhere for the 2008 season. I’ll be shocked if he doesn’t sign long term before the season…in fact, I’m a little stunned he hasn’t already signed.

  21. Scooter says:

Placing a disclaimer at the beginning of your rant saying that you aren’t blaming Javon, and not making a judgment, then proceeding to explain all the things that YOU think Javon did wrong, leading to this, is a bit disingenuous.

is it really your contention that players shouldn’t be out after midnight? if not, why bring up the “nothing good happens after midnight” nonsense. By the way, just because it’s a clever turn of phrase, doesn’t make it a fact.

  22. Rob Calonge says:

    June 19th, 2008 at 2:34 pm

Scooter - I’m not explaining the things that I ‘think Javon did wrong, leading to’ his beating. I think that you’re taking the statement out of context. What I was saying was I’m not judging him or saying that he’s stupid, but the actions that he took were actions with little common sense involved.

I didn’t say that he shouldn’t go out or stay out past midnight, just that he should do it in a more low profile way and with a little more security. No matter what he does, he’s still going to have to deal with the ‘haters’. That’s the price of celebrity. Is it fair? Nope, but there’s a huge difference between you or I at the clubs in the middle of the night and a highly paid pro athlete. Who do you think the thugs are going to rob between the three of us?

It’s more than that though Scooter. When you or I go to the clubs, we’re not spraying everyone with bottles of champagne that cost more than some people’s weekly paycheck…well at least I’m not, and you probably shouldn’t either.

BTW, is it your contention that most violent crimes happen during daylight? This is where you and I will have to agree to disagree. Anyway, the point of that paragraph that you contend was that he’s already suffered a traumatic experience from the same causes, yet he hasn’t changed. Actually, it’s pretty much the point of the whole article.

Thanks for stopping by and taking the time to comment.

  27. Sonny says:

I have lived in Las Vegas for years and there is one thing you can count on. Anyone out without back up or body guards that is flashing large amounts of money and bling is headed for trouble.

Even if they are lucky enough that the place they happen to be at does not have the thug there, they are coming. One call from a working girl, bartender or valet is all it takes.

Vegas is a great place and I love it. But anytime you have a place where there is lots of money being dumped by people that are just trying to have a good time and are walking around three sheets to the wind there are always people looking for that easy money.

Problem is today nobody respects anyone anymore. I do not care who you are, spray me with anything but dollars and you are going down a flight of stairs.

As the great Sonny Barger stated, “You treat people like you would like to be treated until they treat you different. Then you treat them accordingly. You cant fix Stupid.

  29. Joe says:

I was on record to say we wasted 16 million when he shoed up to camp out of shape. I stand by that statement and I believe that he’s lying as there is NO WAY IN HELL the events could have happened the way he said. Vegas is one big video camera waiting to happen. You cant do ANYTHING in Vegas without big brother watching.

  30. Raider Blues says:

    June 19th, 2008 at 9:26 pm

I certainly parrot the idea of finding a reason to blame him and cut him immediately but if we can’t then after midnight or not after midnight should be no actions that deter young Mr. Walker from 100% focus on the success of the Oakland Raiders this season from the WR position!

has about as much situational awareness as a certain presidential candidate.

  31. Stinky says:

After what happened to Darrent Williams based on some champagne spray, you’d thnik Javon would duck and cover if he even dribbled a little Dom down his chin. Nah, this serious jackass is sprayin git all over a club. Again. I know. I know. some of you really want to give him some sort of benefit of the doubt. Be realistic. Walker is another over grown child that will dissappoint Oakland, waste your time, drain your money, and ultimately be a bust.
