Peyton Manning to JaMarcus Russell-Is there something special going on here? Thoughts from a Reader's Side

One thing that I love about writing TFDS is how involved our readers are both in the comment box and in submitting their Thoughts from a Reader's Side. You guys are what keeps me coming back here night after night churning our stories on the Oakland Raiders. We have another contribution from our reader Umer Waris aka Raider till Death. He goes out on a limb here comparing JaMarcus Russell to Peyton Manning, and does it well.

Peyton Manning to JaMarcus Russell: Is There Something Special Going on Here?

by Umer Waris

Special to Thoughts from the Dark Side

Comparisons are made and similarities are shared in the world of sports. Kobe to Jordan, Crosby to Gretzky and on goes the list. Even though JaMarcus Russell has yet to start a single season in his NFL career, his resemblance to Peyton Manning is unlike any other in the present football.

Now before all you haters start jumping off your seats throwing the F-bomb and slamming your monitor against the wall, be patient and let me begin.

Lets start by comparing the Wonderlic test results. Jamarcus scored a 24 while Peyton ended up with a 26. Pretty close, don't you think? The exam judges the football IQ level of the incoming draftee and is a crucial assessment for a quarterback. Before the draft, JaMarcus was inquired which quarterback he admires and wishes to emulate the most. His reply was none other than Peyton Manning.

Both these first overall selections started their careers with not so impressive rookie performances. In which case, both quarterbacks will be joining good company with the likes of Terry Bradshaw, Troy Aikman, and John Elway. Manning led the Colts to a 3-13 season as he threw 28 interceptions and 26 touchdown passes. In Russell's rookie season the Raiders finished 4-12. In both instances, the teams ended up with the fourth overall selection in the upcoming drafts and both picked RBs: Edgarrin James and Darren McFadden.

As a quick side note, by comparing both these running backs coming out of college McFadden is considered the much better choice. As an aside, all of James's records at the University of Miami have since been broken by Willis McGahee.

Both Manning and Russell feature a rocket arm and have deep southern roots. They both were also stars in the SEC before becoming the top picks in the draft. Colts running back Joseph Addai, having played under Russell at LSU, has had the unique role of serving in the backfield behind both QBs. While it is true that J-Russ may lack Manning's theatrical skills at calling audibles and directing teammates, Addai has no doubt that both posses a high degree of leadership.

"You know, what, it's just like a math problem," Addai said. "You could work the problem out a lot of ways and still get the same answer. Peyton has a different way of going about it and JaMarcus has a different way of going about it, but they still get the job done and that's what you love about them."

Russell has always kept Manning at a high pinnacle and has followed his career even before his induction in the NFL. One of the residents of Russell's hometown of Mobile, Alabama, Tee Martin, served as Manning's backup at Tennessee. Russell has also worked for Manning's camp for the last two years where he threw passes to Coach Tony Dungy's son, Eric.

It can be said without doubt that Raider Nation wishes to witness Russell deliver the same amount of success Manning brought to Indianapolis and hopefully even more. Two distinct differences can be made however regarding these two QBs. Russell is probably more athletically gifted than Manning being bigger, stronger and much more mobile whereas Manning has already won the superbowl!

We can only wait and see.

I hope Russell becomes like Manning. His first off-season shows a lot of Peyton(ess). Russell showed that he is taking this job seriously and the shape he is in compared to last year has impressed me more than anything he has accomplished on the field, but that is still to come.

All we need now is a Marvin Harrison type of young receiver to grow with the young QB.

Don't sleep on Michael Bush. Go Raiders.

I think that pat T is correct. While they are similar in these aspects, when comes down to playing style, they're totally different. You can argue that both have cannon arms, but Manning is as mobile as a rock. Russell is a bit of a scrambler. Manning stays in the pocket, Russell rolls out. Russell is massive, Manning is average size for a QB.

Pat T,

I Know whats coming to me from the likes of Mikey and others! Thanks for the heads up though!

Perspective,

Couldnt agree with you more! As far as work ethic goes in this offseason, Russell is showing he is ready to lead the team. Going into the WR corps, I believe the group is one of the most competitive this year and has been under rated because of the QB woes Oakland has been through. Someone is likely to emerge as the #1 WR like Harrison from Training camp. With a healthy Russell and excelling O-line, the passing game can only improve!

LOL good to dream but it would never happen. i can see him being a Good QB or even a top 10 in his prime but will never be at the level of Brady or Manning.

JR> has what looks like a great team around him but the team has some wholes WR-DL-LB-TE i dont see this team making the playoffs untill they get a better D

yea sure thier DB could be the best in the NFL and if they cab play well together the best ever but that doesnt matter if only one person can sack the QB.

the Raiders need to look at the Taxans way of drafting and follow it. D first. this team need help at the line and will never be better that a 9-7 team if they ccant

Arguably the dumbest thread I've seen this year, and that says a lot.

Not even worth addressing, it was so far fetched.

Umer admitted he just got into high school "and is so excited to play football".

I don't smack on kids. Waste of time.

Nice article. Manning is definately someone to aspire to be. JR has great potential but I am afraid we will have to be patient. It is exciting to hear about his work ethic physically and mentally. In OTA's we have all seen that his physical training has paid off in lost pounds and better mobility. We will see soon how the mental preperation pays off.

Another difference between Russell and Manning is the fact that Manning is about as old as Harrison is... So they came into the league with about 2-3 years of a difference.... Manning was thrown into the fire as a rookie and he is very tough mentally we still have to see how Russell will respond after he trows 3-4 INT's in one game(it will happen just like every other QB unfourtanetly)... I totally agree with perceptive we need a young receiver to go with Russell and Miller(thats why i wanted the Raiders to trade into the 2nd or 3rd round and pick us and pick up the receiver out of LSU)... But hopefully one of our young receivers can step up... Personally i would like to see Drew Carter become an all-star... And gman, i agree that we need to improve our D-line... But i think(hope) our defense will imporve with the addition of Gibril Wilson... When i watch re-runs of Raider games i see that most big running plays could've been avoided if our LB, corner, and/or safety made the tackle, and that 5-6yd run turned into a 30-40yd run... And thats what killed us our problem is solid tackling and thats what Wilson will bring to the defense... And that should be a focus in training camp... also think(hope) Rob Ryan will blitz more this season now that he has two of the best corners in the league... Because we have the right LB pieces to bllitz, our LB's are fast enough plus i think Kalimba Edwards could be a pretty good situational pass-rusher... As well as Greg Spires... But i've also heard that Jay Richardson has been working on imporving his pass-rushing abilities(i wish we would've resigned Chris Clemons)... We also have Trevor Scott the rookie... A very speedy DE, but we'll have to see what he's about...

GO RAIDERS!!!

The headline alone made me start shaking my head at the suspension of disbelief that Raider Nation has about their team.

I applaud loyalty and optimism regarding your team - but sooner or later, Raider fans, you're going to realize that there is no Santa Claus, the Tooth Fairy is one of your parents with a dental fetish, and teams that have won 19 games since 2002 (thank you, ESPN) need to come to their senses eventually.

My team is in disarray - my team has questions all over the place - my team is prepared to be the laughingstock of the NFL for 2008 - and I'm more than willing to admit that.

But I'm not so delusional that I will predict Brodie Croyle will be better than Joe Namath, and I won't defend my gang-banging wide receiver who has been chased from two teams because he's determined to live the thug life. If the Chiefs had drafted D-Mac over Glen Dorsey, I would have screamed bloody murder - not been pleased because a position I'm already stacked at just got more depth.

Nice attempt at thinking outside the box - but the idea is pure lunacy.

Go Chiefs!

Mikey whiner,

Hey 'creature', didnt we have a bet from before?!?! Hmmm....

When have I ever said I am just entering high school and "excited to play fotball"? Tell you what, you paste the link of where ever I had spoken this and we can call the bet off. Sounds fair right?

Just for your info I've been playing football for the last two years at my high school. Good enough for you!

Ryan Brown,

In your case, comparing Croyle to Namath is absolute fantasy! These were just some facts that I picked up regarding Manning & Russell and like I said in my final line "We can only wait and see".

Thank you everyone for stopping by and giving your thoughts about the article. Also, much thanks to all those who have shown support to me!

KA1Z3R I would agree with you except apparently you didn't read the Addai quote which makes the "different playing style" thing moot. Go back and read it again.

I too thought this article was going to be just another lame attempt at comparing (insert QB for your favorite team) to Peyton Manning. But this actually had some interesting similarities. Many of which are a bit more than just coincidence. The Addai quote was a must have though. His words are the connecting fiber to all of this. Without it this article would mean very little. But overall this was an interesting bit of reading that was well researched.

Now if Brady Quinn turns out to be Ryan Leaf part two it will complete the similarities.

Ooh I just thought of another coincidence. Ryan Leaf's brother's name is Brady. The same as Brady Quinn who was drafted the same year as Russell. Now we just have to find out where Kevin Bacon fits into all of this.

Ryan don't be a hypocrite. This is the opinion of ONE MAN not an entire nation. And just the other day I slammed a guy on your site who said that Brodie Croyle could be another Peyton Manning (seriously) and I didn't act like he was representative of the entire Ketchup and Mustard Klan.

Im glad thats the way you felt about the article. You keep things humorous around here pretty well!

Run DMC,

Thanks for the support, dude! As far as the #1 WR issue goes, I believe training camp will bring out the best options for Russell to throw to. There is some cut-throat competition in that squad and hopefully, it will just go uphill from there.

Thanks for stopping by!

Probably not - Manning started all 16 games his rookie year. More importantly, Manning has been the beneficiary of Bill Polian's abilities as a GM while JR can only hope that the types of moves Al Davis made this offseason somehow pan out.

Ryan look dude read the title, does it say JaMarcus Russell will be better or as good as Peyton Manning??? No right, it says "Peyton Manning to JaMarcus Russell-Is there something special going on here? Thoughts from a Reader’s Side"... And Umer is just saying theres a couple of similarities thats it... Hell, no one ever stated Russell will be better or as good as Manning... And the most important part of this article to me is what Joseph Addai said... And Ryan i wouldn't say much about a gang-banging receiver when your about to sign one(Koren Robinson)... At least Walker has never been suspended...

And me... instead of dream, ill say leave, leave, leave...

Also adam one more time there just simple coninsidences... No one is saying it will or wont happen... hell Russell can only be as good as he wants, if he puts in time every offseason like he's done this one he should be fine...

THESE ARTICLES ARE THE RESULT OF THE BOREDOM OF THE OFFSEASON... BUT IT WAS A GREAT ARTICLE WITH SOME SIMILARITIES I WOULD'VE NEVER KNOWN IF UMER DOESN'T WRITE THIS ARTICLE... SO THANKS UMER... AND ALL YOU NON-RAIDER FANS STOP HATING... ITS SIMPLE JUST CLICK THE RED X AT THE TOP RIGHT HAND CORNER...

Even on this far fetched babble : 'BUT IT WAS A GREAT ARTICLE

Think about it.

If every single time someone sees you they say "Great dress" at some point to you wonder if their sincere?

See, Stoogley, even writers of threads know or at least hope SOME just might be a "great article". NO WRITER, at any level, ever believes each and every thing they write is "GREAT".

In other words, your words have no credibility.

Here's what I know- JaMarcus Russell started a game last season against the San Diego Chargers and went 23/31 for 224 and one pick early, a pass that was INT'd by Igor Olshansky at the line. He also fumbled and had it go for a TD. Not a great day, but it was also the day I started to believe in him.

He had one glorious play, where the line held in pass protection, he rolled out and fired a 32 yard pass to Jerry Porter for a TD.

When the rookie mistakes go away, that's what you're going to see from Russell. Chefs can keep Croyle, Donc can have have Cutler. I'll keep Russ.

yea umer good article man.. the simularities are very interesting.. people always knock the #1 overall picked QBs .. because most are "overrated" ... but payton is a prime example of this. i really think j-russ has a lot more options with the ball than payton had his rookie season... so i think as long as russell knows his roll and makes good decisions with the ball ..things should be lookin good this season.

Nice article. What you're missing, and what will be missing in JR's career, is: CONSISTENCY IN COACHING. Peyton has had one OC his entire career. With Big Al at the helm, chances are JR will have had 6 - 8 by the time he reaches the same point in his career as Peyton.

Its sad to say, but it is a fact that until Al provides a consistent leader and stops undermining him, the Raiders will never be a consistently good team.

Same with you, little girl.

IF YOU HAD BALLS you would state "here I am, come and get me" Instead you state "No, tell me where YOU are, and then I'll show up. I'm a bitch, so no one expects me to show by myself, or even without a weapon to protect my purse".

Now, honestly, you and I both know you're a little kid. You don't have the $25.00 for parking. Your mom isn't going to drive you out there.

You aren't going to do shit, little girl, and you know it.

Now, it's a Raider board. You posting your address means you only have to worry about one poster, me.

What???? You soiling your pretty little pink panties???

Yeah, fool, you spell like you're 12. Your idiot takes indicate I'm being generous with the 12, and your even weaker juvenile "your wife" takes guarantees you're not an adult.

You're a bitch. A sorry little pubescent bitch

Patricia: ~~~~~STOP STARING AT YOUR KIDS WHEN THEIR GETTING UNDRESSED AND TELL ME WHERE TO MEET YOU? AND SQUAT SHIT ONLY TIME I SQUAT IS TO SHIT ON THE NINERS JERSEY… GROW SOME BALLSSSSSSSSSSSSSS……………… AND TELL ME WHERE? __________________………………… I WILL WHOOP, WHOOP, WHOOP, WHOOP, WHOOP, WHOOP, WHOOP, WHOOP, WHOOP, WHOOP, WHOOP, WHOOP… YOUR ASS… DAMN IM BORED…

====================================

Now, tell me, honestly, do you really believe anyone on this board doesn't think you're an idiot kid? What adult posts that stupid crap? Seriously. An 18 year old would be embarrassed to post that..no one older than 16 would even consider that stupid crap.

Yes, yes, lol...I'm smacking on a kid..I know.

Something I usually choose not to do..but damn, lol..it's fun watching you try to act all grown up, not realizing you're making it quite clear you definitely are pretty young..not to mention stupid.

Go back to school, asshole. Fools like you mean my tax paying dollars will be supporting your uneducated ass.

Of course, you can post that address...unless, of course, you're worried something might happen.

Seriously - Pat T is a fabulous representation of Raider Nation - keep giving the Silver and Black something to be proud of.

==================================

I kind of wonder about this board, actually.

It's not just that the board allows children to post, but it also seems to pretty much allow anything.

I mean, you have kids signing on just to state 'Ya dude, I want to come fight" Most boards have zero tolerance for those making threats. Obviously not this one.

And honestly, allowing the following comments, on a board that is basically kind of slow, hoping to recruit posters, even with their archaic setup, is the kiss of death.

I'm curious, Rob and Patrick...why do you allow comments like below???

Run DMC says:

June 28th, 2008 at 5:28 pm

Mike Whiner watches little boys in the shower so disregard any of his comments he got a hard on at the idea of Umer being in highschool

Pat T:PUSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYY!!!!!!!! GOT YOU AND YOUR WIFE ON MY DICK…………….(YOUR WIFE LITERARLYON MY DICK)………. MIKE DO NOT REPLY TO ME IF YOUR NOT GONNA TELL ME WHERE TO MEET YOU…. OH AND NO YOU “clod” ITS RED….

Pat T: Mike’whiner, dude you have my name in your mouth about as many times your wife has had my DICK in her’s… NO JOKE! AND I’LL MEET YOU AT THE CHARGER VS. WHINER GAME(I’LL BE THE GUY STANDING NEXT TO YOUR WIFE WHILE SHE’S ON HER KNEES…

------

Now, I've tossed out "MORON" "IDIOT" "DUMBASS"..you know, words even Disney Channel allows...but this sorry weak juvenile idiot takes seem to permeate this board, unchecked.

Now, personally, I laugh at it, as I consider the source. On most raider boards they have "The Hole" or "The Smack Board"..anything allowed, with disclaimers..but here it seems for every knowledgeable Raider fan there are 5 who have trouble spelling the teams name.

That's why I think a special PayPal Thread should be created by Patrick and Eggo.

If you can't control the kids, then at least let's do something to help them...yes...you know where I'm going with this...a DONATION THREAD.

I think a mind is a terrible thing to waste, and if everyone chips in, we can send a HOOKED ON PHONICS set to Pat T;, Kushman, Slickvick, Steve Palmer...etc..etc...etc.

Can anyone here HONESTLY state they don't think any of those mentioned don't need serious help? It's like a "Challenged IQ" convention on this board.

Won't help now, but in a couple of years, once they go through the tapes and flip cards, I'm positive some will actually be able to be understood.

Well???

What do you say, Patrick and Eggo?

If you're going to allow them to post unchecked, shouldn't we at least hope they give the impression that this isn't Raider Romper Room???

Mike49er - While TFDS does not condone violence or vulgarity, we do condone freedom of speech. With that said, there have been a few comments left on our boards that have crossed the line. There is a tolerance here for posters to cross that imaginary line from time to time and that tolerance may be much more lenient than even the nastiest boards.

We are currently in the process of a revamp to the site and intend to put a few safeguards in place when that happens.

The violence comments, while completely uncalled for, are considered more of a window into the person making the comments. Patrick and I see the threats as nothing, but idle ones. This is due to the fact that nobody here would know any different if you were standing next to them rooting for the Giants together or not. We do monitor it and monitor the users making the threats.

To EVERYONE - This site is based of the basic fundamentals of free speech. Don't degrade yourself by acting serious about a fight or any other form of violence. It's very different to say, "If you said that to my face, I'd kick your ass," than to say, "Let's meet [you name the place] at [you name the time] and I'll whip your ass."

In other words, rise above it. Put downs and such are fine, and can be the most hilarious thing on these boards, but let's try to keep it at a rated R level or below instead of the triple X that Mike49er is pointing out. We love patT here at the Dark Side, so we're not singling him out, but that is a good example of XXX.

Before you type think, "would I want my 5 year old [daughter, niece, nephew, child, etc...] to read this?"

I had been planning on addressing this already, so I'm not taking sides with Mike49er. I'm only asking that we keep this at a steaming boil rather than letting it boil over and make a mess.

Thanks to all for contributing like you do. :-)

Patricia:Well i totally agree with you Rob, i’ve told you ill be at the SanFran vs. Bolts game… Not because of you, but because i have tickets… SO SINCE I GUESS YOUR SCARED TO MEET ME AT A NINERS GAME THEN WE REALLY SHOULD STOP ALL THIS BACK & FORTH CRAP… ITS REDICULOUS ARGUING WITH SOMEONE WHO IS SCARED…. (COUGH, COUGH)

---

You couldn't be any more ignorant if you took a class, lol.

The address????

Awwww...you don't feel comfortable without support?

is that it?

You and I both know you're not going to show.

EVERYONE KNOWS you're going to not only NOT show, but you plan on coming back and saying "I WAS THERE" while you giggle like a little school girl.

That weakass crap is for kiddy's...so...grow a pair of balls, and let's see a name and address.

Everyone has a name and address. Why are YOU so worried about giving it out?

What's the problem??? Seriously. Don't run the 'I think you're going to call the police and tell them I'm an illegal alien."...or "I don't want you telling everyone I live in a trailer park"...what you mean to say is ALL YOU HAVE IS THE "LET'S MEET AT THE GAME" whimper.

No one ever show...as in ever. They ALL state exactly what your sorry little slapped on school girl ass states which is acting all grown up, all bad ass, hoping it masks the fact I made you my bitch.

No, little girl, you replying 'No you're my bitch" doesn't change what we all know, now, does it?

Nor does the fact you're honestly a moron mean you're not a little kid...just appears that you are.

And yes, yes, everyone knows EXACTLY WHAT YOU'LL DO...after you don't show, all you'll ever post after that is "You were scared" because everyone knows you have nothing. You're reduced to hoping acts of bravado replaces you having goober sized huevos.

so, little girl, again, what's the excuse why you're scared to list an address and name??

Like I said, I'll be at the game..You??? YOU'RE A LYING CROCK OF SHIT, lol.

Yeah...calling you out as a lying piece of crap, Patricia. YOU STATED YOU HAD TICKETS TO THE RAIDER/NINER GAME..not the NINER/CHARGER game.

Yeah, FOOL...BUSTED.

You jumped on with everyone else when others said 'I'll see you at the Raider/Niner game" until I informed all I'm not going to that game. That I'll be at the Niner/Charger. Then, like a sheep, you stated you were going there.

Now, LMFAO..uh...Patty???

You bought tickets to the Niner/Charger game?

Which are playing AT THE SAME TIME as the Raiders are playing???????

Is that what you're saying? That instead of WATCHING THE RAIDERS PLAY, you went and bought tickets TO SEE THE NINERS PLAY??? LMAO...fool.

Hell, even if you state "No, my mommy bought them for me because I passed my eye exam" still means YOU CHOOSE TO WATCH THE NINERS INSTEAD OF WATCHING THE RAIDERS.

:) Well???? Squirm, little girl..lol...how do you explain that?

So any person drafted in the top 5 with a similar Wonderlic score, one similar physical dimension (strong arm), and a simliar draft spot draws a lot of similarities? Does that mean Colt Brennan is the next Tom Brady because they were drafted in a similar spot and ran the same offense? C'mon man, there are hundreds of QBs who tested extremely well in arm strength at the combine and had a fairly average Wonderlic score. I could buy the comparison if you want to talk about the way they play the game, the type of offense they work best in, the way they prepare for the game.

Because what you left out is that while Peyton had an average Wonderlic score, he's the most football smart player in the game. While he has a rocket arm, his strength is not arm strength as much as it is his decision-making. Has Russell ever called 75% of the plays from the line of scrimmage? Has he moved two or three offensive players around while standing behind center for a snap? Has Russell proved that he would commit an insane amount of time preparing for the game, studying film like a hermit?

The answer is "no." And you know what? Apart from maybe Tom Brady, the answer "no" for the rest of the QBs in the league too. Peyton Manning isn't the best QB of our generation because he has good arm strength. It's because he is a ridiculous student of the game.Pro bowl QB Carson Palmer, who is arguably far more similar in playing style to Peyton than JR is, tried to do this. This is a pro bowl, #1 pick QB. He failed miserably. Why? Because Peyton is arguably the best QB of all time at calling plays on the spot.

So until I see Jamarcus Russell calling plays at the line of scrimmage, changing his receivers' routes and even blocking schemes, and then making 2 pro bowls in a row let alone over 5, it's absolutely insane to compare a draft pick to one of the top 5 QBs of all time.

If you want a more accurate comparison (and one that nobody will get upset about) it's Carson Palmer, not Peyton Manning.

I'm thinking of writing an article that won't be far fetched.

"Alex Smith to Ryan Leaf- Just knock it off alright!"

That's your sad futer Mike Whiner...

Brady ran the traditional pro style offensive Michigan has featured for Decades while Brennan ran the Spread Offensive at Hawaii... Much Much MUCH different.

I get what your saying about that but you can do better I hope

LMFAO...You idiot. That's an even dumber reply than the "My Mommy bought it for me because I sold the most Girl Scout cookies" reply.

I'll say it again...YOU'RE A LIAR. You stated you were going to the Niner/Raider game, then switched when I stated I was going to be at the Charger/Niner game. lol...you idiot.

So, what you're saying is you choose to miss the LAST GAME of the preseason for the Raiders, to go and buy tickets to a NINERS PRESEASON GAME????

Instead of buying tickets for an actual regular season game to...what was it again? Oh yeah...to 'bring your nephew" you buy tickets to a PRESEASON NINERS GAME????

So, either you're a LIAR or you're a FOOL.

Which is it??? Guaranteed you're one or the other, Patricia, and to show you I'm a good sport, YOU DECIDE.

As your final lesson in humiliation, here's directions to where I'll be, so you can start making excuses now.

Monster Park exit, west side of freeway, right down Beatty Rd (the road straight in front of you as you take the southbound exit. If you take the Northbound exit, turn left at the first fork to Beatty Rd)

Exactly 150 yds on the right is a big parking lot. We'll have a huge double-barrel BBQ setup. We park on the left side, near the open field, where we usually are throwing around the ball.

I'll have on a Gore jersey, probably be flipping steaks and wings at the BBQ, so your sorryass won't have excuses that you "couldn't find me".

Now, bitch, let's see if you walk the walk, or if you're just reduced to blathering like a little girl, as usual.

Oh, and bring your nephew along. Don't worry, regardless of how sorryass stupid you are, no one will hold that against him.
