Thoughts from the Dark Side
A few updates on Raiders News
It’s quiet on the Western front. Could this just be the calm before the storm? Lamont Jordan is still a Raider and another coach is reportedly in the fold as the Raiders remain silent on the Javon Walker injury. Come July 23rd, Raider Nation and all NFL fanatics will finally start getting regular updates on their respective teams. That’s when training camp starts and soon after we will all be graced with the must see TV of the NFL season. Until then, here are a few tidbits that we’re still trying to obtain information on.
Not only roster depth, but coaching depth too?
Former Offensive Coordinator and recently Tampa Bay Buccaneers Quarterback’s Coach, Paul Hackett is reportedly becoming a Raider. I became aware of this yesterday while perusing our Raider News section here at TFDS. Jerry McDonald is reporting that he received a call from Raider brass letting him know of the situation. If you’re reading Raider brass, shoot us an email will ya’?
McDonald extensively goes through the ties that Hacket has with former Raider coach, John (Chuckie) Gruden, and the father of current Raider coach, Lane (Lance) Kiffin, Monte Kiffin. What strikes me is odd is that Hackett wasn’t resigned by the Bucc’s to resume his coaching duties in Tampa by a guy that once worked for him at the University of Pittsburgh. Everywhere Hackett has been the Offensive Coordinator, the fans of his team have soundly booed him. With the Raiders, he’s coming in as an Offensive Consultant.
McDonald appropriately asks if this is a sign that Knapp is going up north after the season ends to reunite with Jim Mora, and I’m curious as well. Whatever happens, at least if Hackett steps into a coaching role with the Raiders sometime in the future, there’ll be continuity.
Jordan blazing a trail around the league
First it was reported that Lamont Jordan might become a Saint, recently it’s being reported quite heavily about his meeting with the Lions. He’s also been reported meeting or talking with the Bears, Jets, Chiefs, Bills, and Packers. The Lions seem to be the Raiders best chance at a trade. Millen and Davis have been trading partners in the past, and neither of them seem to have a problem with doing it again.
The last trade between the two teams was a fourth round pick from the Raiders for Mike Williams and Josh McCown. That fourth round pick turned into A.J. Davis, a defensive back that never made the team and is now with the Browns. It would seem the Raiders got the better of that pick even though neither Williams or McCown are with the team. At least McCown played a vital roll on the Raiders in 2007.
Travis Henry reportedly failed another drug test for marijuana and after also failing last season, I’d guess that he’ll have a difficult time fighting off his one year suspension this time. That makes Jordan a little more marketable, but he’s still competing with guys like Shaun Alexander, Kevin Jones, Ron Dayne, and Mike Anderson (oops! forgot he got suspended for the year…maybe the Raiders will be able to make a trade after all).
Tough offseason for Stabler
Driving while intoxicated has not only landed the legendary Raider in hot water with authorities, caused him to lose the TFDS Hall of Fame vote to former teammate Ray Guy, but now it’s caused him to put his broadcasting duties on hold. In a statement released through the University of Alabama, Stabler said:
“It is with much regret that I will not be part of Crimson Tide football broadcasts this coming year, but there are matters in my personal life that demand my full attention at this time.“
We here at TFDS do not condone gambling with people’s lives when driving under the influence, but we also hope that the Snake can get past this transgression and become a better person and better man for it. We’ll tip one back for you tonight Snake.
Nnamdi, Nnamdi, Nnamdi!
That’s pretty much all you hear around Raider Nation nowadays. The Raiders have until the 15th of July to come to terms with the best corner in the league or else he’s on the hook for nearly $10 million in 2008. This would have serious implications on the Raiders ability to sign other free agents and also to resign the should-be Pro Bowler. If the rumors are true that Al Davis likes to build his team from the corners in, and we here at TFDS can highlight examples that there is truth there, then Mr. Davis will sign the corner back to a multi year contract prior to the deadline.
Davis once didn’t sign his best corner back after labeling him a Franchise Player, and after doing it twice Charles Woodson became too expensive to keep. We’re holding onto our Rosary Beads here and saying all of the Our Father’s that we can in hopes that the Raiders and Mr. Davis don’t make the same mistake twice in 5 years.
Cut us a little slack for the next week or so
While many in the media and around the blog-o-sphere have been taking time off over the past few months, Patrick and I have been hard at it to bring insightful analysis and breaking news to the Raider Nation. Frankly, we’re a little tired and once training camp starts, our jobs here at TFDS is going to get a little more hectic.
With the new MVN format on the horizon, and TFDS coming into it’s own as a partner site of MVN, Patrick and I are working/struggling on the backroom stuff that has little glory involved. Stuff like, working on deals with sponsors, new logos, new formats, and a line of TFDS merchandise that we hope to debut later this month.
Our hope is to still bring new content daily while we are in this transition, and we are asking and hoping that you guys keep checking back with us through it all. When it’s all said and done, we are hoping to be the Raider Nation’s one stop spot for all Raiders news, commentary, analysis, and chat. Thank you to all of you guys that have hung in with us during the past few months and also the TFDS partner sites and community. We promise to make your investment of time in us pay off.
Around the Raiders in a minute here at TFDS

Im a first timer at this since the season end.. and i tell you what, all of your insights (rob and pat) have given me a whole new light on the raiders. And since i am a football freak of nature (as my co-workers haha), i will be on here for years to come.. so thank you guys so much for your very well written and detailed information, because I have definetely found my new home on here!
As far as this upcoming season is concerned.. my gut instinct yells out ‘DUDE ITS THE RAIDERS STOP BEING SO OPTIMISTIC, YOUR SETTING YOURSELF UP FOR HEARTBREAK!!’ … but at the same time, logic tells me ‘man it seems like AD hasnt given his team this much attention since the ‘03 superbowl, he’s really forseeing his demise in the not too distant future, and this man wants to once again say JUST WIN BABY!’ that’s very mind boggling for any black and silver fan… so we’ll just have to wait and see… training camp will be the starting point… preseason vs the niners will be the practice run and tell us a lot what to expect from our guys, and then the MONDAY NIGHT PRIME TIME vs the broncos will be the BIG SHOW….
RA-RA-RA RAAIIIDDDERZZZ is all you’ll be hearing from me yelling at the colesium at both of these events, regardless of how good they’re doing.

Adrian and Kushman - Thanks for the kind words and we’re very happy to have you here as part of the TFDS family.
Oh and Kushman, I completely understand the tendency to be pessimistic. It’s been too long since the Raiders have given any of us the same pride and poise that they advertise during a season. I think (and hope) that this year is the start of a run similar to the 1963-1993 teams that donned the famed silver and black.

no problem rob, you guys deserve the praise! yes i think that they are turning a new leaf.. and i they are on the right track.. the playmakers that al and lane have brought in should make an impact on the team.. we’ve all talked about the same shit a million times, the answers are almost here! GO RAIDERS!

p.s. jerry mcdonald talking about the possibility of brett favre coming to the raiders… THATS A LAUGH. i mean that would be awesome… but dude … come on now, you think al is gonna spend that kinda money for russell to be a backup? plus, brett favre asked for a release so he can move on with his life… i hate how ESPN wont leave this guy alone. that’s all they talk about on nfl live, its a joke! if he comes back he comes back, and i almost guarrantee it wont be for the raiders. but until he decides to come outa retirement, let the quarterback legend of decades be FOR GOD SAKES!

oh wow i was too busy seeing hellboy 2, it has just come to my attention that he wants out of retirement… WOW after all that… the man wants to come back.. i dont even know what to say.. except i retract my previous statement.. haha!
July 12th, 2008 at 10:07 pm
Yes, thank you Rob and Pat!
You guys are doing an excellent job in representing the ’silver and black’ here on MVN. The ‘pride & poise’ and a ‘commitment to excellence’ along with a desire to ‘Just win, baby’ is rampant in your blood!
By the way, I have been wanting to buy a Nmandi jersey for a long time. I seriously dont know what to do at the moment since Im not sure if he will remain with us. (sorry but I just feel that way guys)
Keep the great work!
July 12th, 2008 at 10:34 pm
well i hope your jersey doesnt say Nmandi.. cuz that would be completely the wrong spelling. haha jk dude.
July 12th, 2008 at 11:28 pm
I’d probably get a Russell or McFadden jersey if you’re worried about having an outdated one in a year or two. I would definitely go with a guy the Raiders signed to a long term rather than to have a jersey of a guy on another team. Take it from a guy with 3 Brown jersey’s in his closet. LOL!!
As far as Favre coming to the Raiders, I felt strongly that he would’ve been a Raider two years ago when Moss was still on the team, but now I can’t see it happening. I could definitely see Davis signing him, but I think that Favre would want to go to a team with a chance of making it to the Super Bowl. Outside of Raider Nation, you’re not going to find anyone that feels the Raiders have that chance this season. Teams he may go to would be Minnesota, Chicago, Washington, Tampa Bay, Baltimore, Detroit, Carolina, New Orleans (close to home), or Cincinnati. All of those teams finished 7-9 or better last season, and either don’t have an entrenched QB or wouldn’t mind an upgrade over the one they have. Outside shots would be Houston or Denver, but I highly doubt either franchise would take a chance on ruining their current starters.
So Kushman - how was Hellboy 2?

I want to thank you Rob & Pat for doing a good job and providing us fans with insightful articles, the latest news and updates and all around solid coverage.
I’m right there with you hoping that Nnamdi is resigned to a long term deal before the deadline. I really don’t want to see the same mistake made with another franchise corner in five years.
Go Raiders!!!

I could help make some logos if needed. I’m not a pro, but I have been making band logos for quite some time now seeing as mine cannot agree on a name. If needed, email me at cool491@myway.com or contact me through myspace as Amedeo
Thanks for keeping the offseason interesting
