Raider News: Chaz Schilens signs on the dotted line

The Raiders signed their third of five draft picks by inking Schilens to a contract on Thursday.  The big receiver isn't expected to play a sizable role in the offense this season, but could become a force if he's able to live up to the potential that got him drafted.  At 6'4" and 225 pounds, he's the type of receiver that Mike Williams was supposed to be coming out of college in that he's a huge target for any quarterback to easily find.

I have a question though.  Do all of the rookies get a free T-shirt and a hat when they sign a rookie contract or do they just wear the same one?  If I can get a free shirt and a hat, sign me up (you can cut me right afterwards as long as I get to keep the shwag).  In other Raiders news being reported...

Rotoworld is reporting that Warren is expected to be Kelly's linemate in the starting rotation of Raiders defensive tackles.  Their source of this information comes from the analysis of one of our favorites, Jason Jones.  Rotoworld puts it this way:

"Underachieving Terdell Sands will rotate in. Warren and Kelly are one-gap tackles, while Sands is Oakland's supposed run plugger. Despite upgrades in the back, expect this rush defense to remain among the league's poorest."

Bogus or True: As much as we hate to disagree Jones, we don't have any problem disagreeing with Rotoworld.  Warren is good, but Sands is better, and we believe that he's past his troubles of last season.  He'd better be or else he won't be playing for the Raiders next season under his current contract.  For now, we'll call this report Bogus.

The Contra Costa Times is reporting that the Raiders and the 49ers have agreed to hold joint practices, (for Travis Henry - that means they'll practice football not smoking together), This is what they had to say:

"No date has been announced, though the practice likely is to take place before the teams' exhibition game Aug. 8."

Bogus or True: We've already been aware of this at TFDS so we're calling this news True.  Let's just hope that none of our future Pro Bowler's suffers the fate of a former center, Don Mosebar.  That incident is thought to be the real reason that the Raiders and Cowboys joint practices ended.

Former Raiders great, Tim Brown has been reported by the L.A. Times saying that Brett Favre should stay retired.  No offense to Brown, but great players don't usually take career advice too well.  Brown is quoted as saying:

"There's no way he's going to be back in that locker room now. Absolutely, positively no way. They're just trying to say the right thing, hoping that he comes to his senses. I don't think he serves himself or anybody any good by coming back. Bottom line is this: If this was anybody else, this wouldn't be a conversation, because they'd be like, 'Man, you're retired. Go on about your business. What's wrong with you?' But because it's Brett Favre and it's the legendary quarterback, everybody's having these conversations. He puts the team and his teammates in a position where they have to say the right thing. You can't say anything bad about Brett Favre publicly. Are you kidding me? Who are you to say something bad about Brett Favre? But I know for a fact that the organization doesn't want him back. They didn't want him there last year. And for him to put them in a predicament where they have to even think about this again, when they've moved on, they've drafted a couple more quarterbacks. . . .Once you say you're retired, you're retired. Let somebody call you back. But don't put your team and your teammates and the organization in a position where they have to walk this line. Everybody goes through what he's going through where you say, 'I'm going back. I can still do it. But it takes somebody around you to say, 'No, you're not. I remember what you said at the end of the season, and you're not going back. Obviously, [Favre] doesn't have anybody around him to tell him that."

Bogus or True: Those are pretty strong words from Timmy B.!  He makes many good points, and Favre really has put his former teammates in a bind.  He's probably right about the Packers organization not wanting him for the past couple of years also, but the question remains should Favre stay retired?  Tim Brown's take is valid for Tim Brown.  The difference between the two is that Tim Brown wasn't playing at a Pro Bowl level when he retired and Favre still is.  This is why we're calling Tim Brown's analysis Bogus, but knowing Tim Brown from seeing him say other odd things about the Raiders in the past, this story is probably True.

So is everyone ready for next week?  Training camp starts and we'll be able to discuss [insert unknown guy on the depth chart] making noise for himself in practice.  Practice??   Yes, A.I., practice.  According to my new DirecTv desktop widget, we have 48 days and some change until the Raiders finally face off against the Broncos on MNF.  Until then, we'll be talking about practice.

I think Terdell will and Warren will be fine and we've improved our end position w/ Burgess health, Richardsons improvement, and the hiring of Spires. The real question is Kelly's health

good article rob! yea i agree.. a close death in a family can really put a damper on your career.. normal people will take a leave of absense... in terdell's case, had to take off from practicing.. which has been said.. left him slugging.. thus the name terd. but i really want to believe the man can be a run plugger.. take out those fullbacks trying to pave the way.. and colapse the pocket on blitz's ..

as for tommy.. yea i'll keep saying.. SUCH A GOOD POINT THIS GUY MADE ... AD should have franchised him to see how that leg will hold up.. and give aso the 50mill.. CLASSIC AD, NOT THINKING WITH COMMON SENSE! other than that, i'm going to trust in lane saying his weight room lifting is absolutetly tremendous... which means at his huge size, that'll give o-lineman a lot of trouble. gerrard warren is the most dependable on the line ithink, he just needs to be more consistent!

all in all.. this line does their job in being better at stopping runners, watch the f out afc west, afc east, nfc south... cuz this d will shut yer asses down on every play!

ps. hahha t brown is absolutely right.. drafted rodgers inthe first last year.. brohm this year.. and one more later if im not mistaken? FAVRE TAKE A HINT DUDE.. MOVE ON WITH YER LIFE.. just dont go to the chiefs for the love of god plz. i dont want to see yer old ass twice a year! haha

Why does everyone have the point of view that Aso doesn't like the fact that he's making almost $10 million this year, and playing in this revamped team. If giving someone $10 million dollars is a slap in the face from al davis, then somebody slap me. Can't see Aso not wanting to play in Oak, he's a lifer

I agree, but I think he still wants to be paid, long term like Hall. I hope he does, he deserves the respect, but like I said before, if he waits another year or two, he will have an even bigger pay day. They just want to make sure of the contract in case they get injured during the year. We all know how "all" owners are, including the Raiders and Chargers owners!! Go Raiders!! 9-7, aw, I'll still say it 10-6

It's sad when we have to think 10-6 is good for a Raider team but we have to do so until we can prove otherwise.

As for Favre - I've been calling for his retirement for 5-6 years and then he goes and has a good year this last year - go figure but he is done! Please!

Hey Kushman, just a note,Rodgers was drafted 4 years ago and been sitting biding his time since then, I think Warren needs to be the starter unless Sands has an amazing training camp and preseason, Sands has not shown any consistancy and thats what we need badly on our d line to have a good year.

ah i see, i forgot he was drafted that long ago, and that's what i mean, now that he gets his chance brett favre wants to come back .. which is just selfish.. and yes cujo consistancy on the D-line is key.. just like i had said.. and no player on that line has shown that they can be thus far... warren and sands will both be starting side by side according to just not this rotoworld.. but everyone pretty much expects that coming out of training camp, hopefully they can work better together this year..

oh and saskraider: the reason being is because everyone freaked out that asomugha'd contract is another charles woodson situation.. yes grant it Nnamdi is a much more humble player than woodson was, which we can only pray works AD's advantage for HIS SAKE BECAUSE NO ONE WILL LET YOU HEAR THE END OF IT SKELETOR!! my guess is nnamdi will see the light once he has the best year of his career, because with hall on the other side, QBs are gonna have no choice but throw his way more this year, and you know its obvious that he will VERY likely be in '05 form with this backfield.. but realistically tho, when a player is considered the best at a position in the league.. they know they deserve better pay and many other teams that have plenty of salary cap room .. but hey, al loves speed and size.. so we all as usual have to have blind faith in the fact that the organization will get something done before the free agency period in '09.

Hey Rob, any word on Trevor Scott? Contracts, how he looked at the first camp, anything really. I'm excited to see what somebody who has the speed of a TE and strength of a DE can do.

s&b - I'm sure that Scott's contract is a mere formality at this point. Look for him to be signed by the second day of training camp. We'll know more about how he's doing as camp moves forward, but at this point not much has been reported about his first few camps other than he was there. With as much trouble as the offensive tackles had I'm guessing that he didn't do as well as the veterans he's competing with, but give him time.
