Oakland Raiders musings from the Dark Side

Wow!  Patrick sure has been working his fingers to the bone bringing us all quite a bit of news concerning the silver and black, so he's probably got them packed in ice right now in preparation for reporting tomorrow's events as well.  Remember Patrick, ice then heat then ice again.  A bunch of stuff going on in Raider camp and it's funny how you can be excited and worried about the same thing.  That's pretty much my reaction to today's events.

Lamont Jordan misery ends

Lamont Jordan is finally gone.  So is everyone happy?  I saw a comment on a message board today, don't know where, but it was from a guy that said something to the affect that the Raiders would be missing Jordan's heart on the team.  Huh?  If you don't agree that Jordan isn't very good, then we can just agree to disagree, but if you think that Jordan showed heart as a Raider, we need to review some game film together.

Check out that defense!  Oooh, hide the offense though

With the Raiders saving some space under the cap, maybe they still have some cash to pick up a few linemen.  Offensive linemen that is.  By all reports, the Raiders offensive line is having an impossible time blocking any of the defensive guys.  This is the excitement/worry that I was talking about.  It's hard not to be excited about Oakland's defense, but it's equally difficult not to be worried about their offense.

I'm going to go by the old saying, "Defense is usually ahead of the offense in the beginning."  Does that work for everyone?  Well it works for me, so I'm going to stick with it for now.

Another worry about the offense came out today when it was reported that the Raiders couldn't hold on to the ball.  In the end and after further review, most of the fumbles came when the backup quarterbacks were taking snaps from the fourth string center, Jesse Boone.  Now that is a fau paux that I can live with.

Best Raider defensive tackle over the past 10 years

I'm probably wrong about this technically, but John Parella was the Raiders best defensive tackle over the past 10 years.  The running game sure has missed him since he's been gone at least.  It was good to see that he was on the sidelines with some of the kids he coaches for day 2 of camp.

With all of the teams that he played for in his career, and the fact that he is/was considered a good Raider, makes it all the more pleasing to see that he probably still considers himself a Raider too.  But isn't that always the case?  Hopefully, he was able to give the current bunch of defensive tackles a little advice on stopping the run.

I was wrong, some of you were right, and I apologize to Javon Walker

Walker shows up to camp WITHOUT a broken orbital socket and I'm feeling pretty lame for all of the articles that I wrote detailing that famed injury.  This has given me pause about MOST of the story that we've gotten to this point, but I'm still sticking by my assessment that Walker needs to be much more careful while 'Big-timing' out in Vegas.

Mr. Walker, I'm sorry for doubting you.  I vow not to write another story about your incident in Las Vegas until you finally, "come out and tell what really happened, I’ll clear it up then."  Just do us a favor and stop talking in the third person like this:

"I don’t have a record. I don’t have a rap sheet.  You don’t hear about Javon Walker getting arrested."

I mean you can do it if you want to, but Rob Calonge doesn't like it or think it makes you sound like less of a 'ME' player.  Rob Calonge also thinks that if your agent was any good at his job, he'd have already told you this.  Sorry Javon, I just couldn't resist.  Wow!  Two apologies in one stanza!

Did anyone ever doubt that Nnamdi IS the MAN?

I didn't.  I knew that he was a team player, a hard worker, and generally a gem of a person, but count me in as shocked when I heard the news that Asomugha was coming to camp on time.  I expected that he'd hold out for at least a week, and hoped that it wouldn't be longer.  Like the true class act that he is, he swallowed his pride, signed his tender, and got on the field on time for the betterment of the team.

This is what he said about it:

"I had heard all the apocryphal stories during the offseason of what was going on so I wanted to put everything to rest and just show up . . . It went both ways. I had a lot of people saying don’t show up and I had enough people saying show it up so it helped me out. I sought out the counsel that was needed in this situation and I was able to come and be here."

a·poc·ry·phal (-pkr-fl) adj. - Of, or pertaining to, the Apocrypha; Of doubtful authenticity; Of dubious veracity; of questionable accuracy or truthfulness; in the nature of an urban legend.

Now that we got that out of the way, yeah I don't remember ever hearing that word before and I won't forget it soon, let's talk about the most incredible part of the whole story.  HE CONSULTED WITH CHARLES WOODSON on what to do and he still came into camp on time.  For me, that's worth another dozen points or so of respect.  Nothing better than a guy with his own mind about things.

Raider Nation sends a message to Raider Nation

Some of you might not enjoy this much, but I got a kick out of seeing Shieldhead without his shield in one quick instant on a Raider video featuring citizens of the Raider Nation pleading with the rest of us to follow the code of conduct.  If you're interested, check it out here.

Speaking of Shieldhead and videos, he's got a MySpace page full of them.  What I'd like to know is, has anyone ever seen his music video that he was supposed to release?  The reason that I ask is the following trailer:

Another reason or two to hate the haters

Actually, I was able to find two reasons to hate the haters.  If the Raiders are better this season, we might not hear from them as much, but it's a guarantee that there will be more of the following as their seething hate continues to grow. I figured that for those of you that aren't riled up already about the start of the season getting closer, I'd help a little.

Ok that niners beating up that Raiders doll is hillariously pathetic. Wow what a lot of wasted energy. They have some serious issues about a team not even in their division. They are even more angry because they are the 2nd losingest team in the last five years in the NFL. Now THAT is funny.

Rob you are wrong that winning will beat back some of the haters. They hate the most because they know that The Raiders are on their way back and it PISSES them off.

That 2nd video is rather appopriate really. The song says "You had a bad day...take a sad song and TURN IT AROUND". Yeah we "HAD a bad day". But that long day is over and now the sun in coming up on a new one. We are taking that sad song and turning it around. (and no I don't mean Jan 20th 2009 but that works too ;))

I actually thought that picture with the baby crying in the Raider shield was kinda cute.

LDizzle - I agree that their hatred will get worse, but the only reason we hear from them now is because we've been down on our luck. They may hate more, but they get awfully silent when the Raiders are winning.

I also agree that the baby was kinda cute. LOL :-)

HAVE A GREAT DAY Raider Nation!

Define irony:

Kushman (and others) bagging on 49er fans for "bask(ing) in the glory of steve young and montana WAY OVER A DECADE AGO" while he supports a team that has won 19 games since 2002 -

Also - let's not forget the continued push for Ray "No Chance in Hell He's Making it Into Canton" Guy to be a Hall of Famer - and the continued defense of Al Davis - who looks like someone who can't remember where he left his slippers, let alone how much salary cap room his team has left.

But keep bringing up those Super Bowl titles from nearly 30 years ago - because that's not living in the past, right?

(Feel free to make your "When's the last time your team won ANYTHING?" jokes now - the difference I know that my team hasn't been good - you just refuse to admit it.)

Go Chiefs!

f'ing patriots haha.. jordan will probably do good behind that line i must say... but he's still behind kevin faulk and lawrence maroney.. so unless one of those 2 get injured.. you probably wont see much of him at least this upcoming year.

Man, I keep looking at the calendar and the first game is still Aug 8th. Is anybody else as anxious as me to see the squad in real action? I wish I had a time machine...

Can't wait for MNF. I wish we were plalying the 9'ers in a real game or at least the last game of pre-season. I love reading Cologne & patterson. this website is awesome. I love to hear you guys. Their is a lot of insight from these readers and some of these haters are hilarious. We remember the glory years because alot of us were kids and those were fun times. Now we're old and still having fun. Fell in love with Raider football in 1975. I am now 44 and still a kid at heart. Nothing wrong with that. Go raiders!! 10-6

Thanks for the props Raidermomo64! You're definitely right about nothing wrong with being a kid at heart.

For those of you anguishing with anticipation for the season to start, I know that Patrick and I are feeling the same way. We'll try to ease your pain a little with a little news and analysis. Thanks to all for stopping by!
