Oakland Raider analyisis: Raiders' owner Al Davis shouldn't care that LaMont Jordan is now in New England

SFGate.com's David White reports that Al Davis is unhappy that LaMont Jordan has signed with the New England Patriots. Jordan's time in Oakland can be considered disappointing at best and a complete waste at worst, so it shouldn't matter where he goes. As a free agent in 2005, his abilities had become overrated whilst serving as a backup to Curtis Martin, but once it was time for Jordan to step into the spotlight and shine it was proven that he didn't have what it takes to be a full time starter. Davis has been seething over the resurgence of Randy Moss, but that comparison is a non-starter.

White wrote:

According to [league sources], Davis told Jordan's agent, Alvin Keels, that he would only release Jordan if he didn't go to one of two teams.

Team No. 1: the Denver Broncos, for the obvious reasons.

Team No. 2: The New England Patriots, who Jordan signed with Saturday.

The reason? Davis felt burned by the Randy Moss trade last year, with the Patriots getting a record-setting season out of the wide receiver and the Raiders getting little-used draft pick John Bowie.

Despite Davis feeling burnt by the Moss deal, there can be no comparison. Randy Moss spent his two years in Oakland dogging it after having proven that he had elite level talent. It was his work-ethic and "hurt feelings" that kept him from actually producing. LaMont Jordan, on the other hand, has had a horrid work ethic and been injury prone. When Jordan got the big contract and the ability to be a starter, rather than embrace it he admitted that he got soft and didn't study his playbook. Jordan also has been unable to play an entire 16 game season in his thee years in Oakland, averaging a pathetic 3.8 ypc every year.

Once Jordan got his unconditional release, Davis has no say over where he goes, so why is he so afraid that Jordan is going to blow up and actually surpass mediocre and reach good or from the sounds of it very good? Could this be an admission on Al's part that things in Raiderland haven't been the best for the past few years? Maybe Al is seeing that there are problems and that the coaches need to be able to coach without looking over their shoulder.

It used to be that everyone wanted to be a Raider. That was where a player could come and be "treated like a man" and be a part of a winning tradition. In recent years, there seems to be the opposite effect, as player after player take their shots at the organization.

"There is some strange stuff going on here. Everyone is walking on eggshells."

--Randy Moss 2006

"There's a fox in the henhouse"

--Art Shell 2006

"This place is like a black hole. There are things going on there that shouldn't be going on in a football team."

--Warren Sapp 2008

"I want to be in a winning situation."

--Chris Carr 2008

Its easy to look at those quotes and the names attached, as they each have their own baggage, but still when looked at as a whole, it would seem to indicate something is rotten in the state of Raiders. Al Davis above all has to feel the sting of this, as he has always prided himself on being a "players' owner." Being that he is the absolute dictator of the Oakland Raiders, he has to feel that criticism.

The question is whether or not it will have any real effect. Al Davis has often said that he would rather be right than consistent. This is his chance to be right instead of consistent and stand behind Lane Kiffin as his coach and let Kiffin and his staff build greatness that is always in the future of the Raiders.

What this essentially amounts to is Lamont having one great game left in him and that will be December 14th 2008 when the Pats visit Oakland. That's why Al is pissed. He's seen this happen before to his team and others. It's the nature of the beast.

I would rather see him in New England then Denver or KC. Not that it matters cause I don't see him getting much playing time anywhere. As for the the former Haters I remember Carr loosing the game against the Bears by getting beat deep. As for Moss in my opinion all he did was quit on the Raiders

Al Davis worries about a lot of meaningless crap and ignores the important things, like signing players with character.

The man is absolutely insane!

Well Twocents thats the Raider way. Al's been doing that since the 70's. If it wasn't for for all the crazies and misfits the Raiders wouldn't have 3 Super bowl titles. I know times have changed but the Raiders will always gamble with taking other teams misfits. True alot of them won't make a big impact but all it takes is 1 to to put them over the top.

a f*#k the broncos first of all and the patriots they think there the shit but a they got cocky last season and lost the big game as for moss i think aso and hall will shut him down im hoping he comes across the middle and gibril knocks his head off and when we got jorden i was especting a rising star and at least he hasn't taken any shots at the raiders yet i thnk with our great backs we have a good shot we just have to stop the run jorden wont even play in this game he will be on IR by then

What a big whiny crybaby Al Davis is............Oh boo hoo, I will give you a release only if you dont sign with Denver or New England.........Please Lamont, don't sign with those two teams. Davis is without a doubt the biggest idiot of all time if he thought Lamont was actually going to listen to him. The Raiders are nothing but a stinking cesspool full of whiners and crybabies and it is going to be a great joy to see that silver and black pirate ship sink like an anvil this season. hahaha

Great article Patrick someone needed to say it. Excellent insight from Al's Wingman as well, clearly a team player. It seems to me there is an excellent chance Jordan doesn't even make the Patriots team. Faulk and Maroney are pretty good backs. Sammy Morris isn't spectacular but neither is Jordan. Does anyone think Belichick will tolerate not studying the playbook or being soft? Either way I'm calling a Raider upset in December, and just for one blissful moment as the clock winds down haternation will be silent as they collectively gulp.

One Nation...

Raiders will stink up the joint again this year. Jordan will make the Patriots and be part of a 4 headed monster running game to go with their 4 headed monster passsing game. Ugh! Patriots should name Davis their MVP for sending them Moss and now Jordan. Prediction for 2008--Jordan 1,000 yards running, 50 catches. Moss 90 catches, 1,300 yards and 15 TD's. Thanks a lot Al.

Eureka! I just figured it out. Oakland is really a farm team for the Patriots and Al Davis is really just a scout for the Pats. Nothing else could explain the stupidity.

****Newsflash****

It has been discovered by ESPN that Oakland is in reality a farm team for the Patriots and Al Davis is their head scout. Nothing else could account for the stupidity coming out of the Oakland front office.

Well let me say this, anyone who thinks that Patriots will "run" over the Raiders this season is wrong. The Patriots are a passing team, they dont use the running game except to keep the defense honest. This actually plays right into the strength of the Raiders defense. They have the ability to cover wide outs. The other thing is if you really look at it, The Patriots last season had Moss, Welker, and Stallworth. They lost Stallworth this offseason, who was their #2 on the depth chart. Welker made all of those catches from running over the middle and making receptions as the #3 wide out. Even if they do still keep it that way, Nnamdi Ashoumgha and DeAngelo Hall won't need to cover Welker. Thomas Howard who has the speed to cover Welker will handle him. The strength of the Patriots plays right into the Raiders hands. It will be on how well the Raiders offense moves the football against the Patriots defense, and who wins the battle of the special teams, will determine the game. I see another game like the Raiders vs. Colts, a tight battle that hopefully the Raiders pull out in 2008. GO RAIDERS!!!!
