The Silver and Black could be back in the PLAYOFFS: 2008 Oakland Raiders season preview

The feeling in the Raider Nation as the season approaches seems to be one of cautious optimism. After the offseason drama that included a supposed feud between Al Davis and Lane Kiffin, several massive contracts doled out, and the prize acquisition found beaten and robbed in a Las Vegas alley, the Raider Nation is ready for some Oakland Raider football. The Nation has grown impatient with the state of affairs after having suffered through a horrid five year stretch filled with double digit loss seasons. This year, that will not happen. The Raiders are going to rise to respectability this season. Here is a game by game preview of the coming season which will find the Raiders at 10-6

Game 1 Denver at Oakland: Win 1-0

The Oakland Raiders came within a controversial late time out and a matter of inches of sweeping the Denver Broncos last season. Javon Walker talked about how he was looking for revenge this game, but it will be the Justin Fargas and Darren McFadden show as the Raiders run all over the Broncos yet again. Jay Cutler will be missing Brandon Marshall as he will be suspended. The Raiders defense will tame the Broncos running game just enough for the Raiders to get the win under the lights at home.

Game 2 Oakland Raiders at Kansas City Chiefs: Win 2-0

The Raiders finally ended their streak of AFC West losses by beating the Chiefs in Arrowhead last season. The Raiders have made improvements. The Chiefs lost their Raider killer in Jarred Allen, and are a very young rebuilding team. Arrowhead has always been a tough place for the Silver and Black, but the Raiders secondary frustrates Brodie Croyle and foils a last second comeback attempt.

Game 3 Oakland Raiders at Buffalo Bills: Win 3-0

Marshawn Lynch looks to make the Raiders pay for passing over him in the 2007 draft, and racks up over 100 yards on the ground. The Raiders continue their game plan from the first two wins and pound the ball on the ground themselves. This is a close game, but Trent Edwards makes the mistake of Nnamdi Asomugha who reminds him why All Pro quarterbacks ignore his side of the field.

Game 4 San Diego Chargers at Oakland Raiders: Loss 3-1

The Chargers' hex on the Raiders continues in this game. The Raiders come into the game riding a wave of momentum from their three wins, but Ladanian Tomlinson puts on one of his displays. The Raiders play it close, but can't quite pull it out in the end. Ultimately Kwame Harris is no match for even a less than full health Shawne Merriman. The Raiders go into their bye week with a winning record and feeling good despite the tough loss.

Game 5: Oakland Raiders at New Orleans Saints: Win 4-1

The Raiders three headed monster of Fargas, McFadden, and Micahel Bush outshine Duce MacAllester and Reggie Bush in a grind it out nailbiter. In this game, McFadden makes his statement by completeing his first pass in the NFL to Ronald Curry for a late touchdown.

Game 6: New York Jets at Oakland Raiders: Loss 4-2

This game becomes a gunfight between the old and new as Brett Favre, who has never lost to the Raiders, and JaMarcus Russell end up in a high scoring old fashioned AFL gunfight. Asomugha and DeAngelo Hall both get interceptions, but Russell's inexperience costs the game late when he throws an ill advised interception. The high scoring nature of the game forces the Raiders to get away from the ground game that had carried them thus far.

Game 7: Oakland Raiders at Baltimore Ravens: Loss 4-3

Ray Lewis and the rest of the Ravens' defense stymies the Raiders ground attack, and exposes the weaknesses of the Raiders offensive tackles in pass protection. In contrast to the Jets game, this one is low scoring as the Raiders manage only three Sebastian Janikowski field goals. The Raiders lose a close one.

Game 8: Atlanta Falcons at Oakland Raiders: Win 5-3

Reeling from two straight losses, the Atlanta Falcons and their rookie quarterback Matt Ryan are just what the doctor ordered. The Raiders running game gets back on track, with McFadden exploding for over 100 yards rushing and receiving and three touchdowns. Matt Ryan is forced to go to the air where Asomugha, Hall, and Michael Huff await. This one is never close.

Game 9: Carolina Panthers at Oakland Raiders: Win 6-3

The Panthers are no match for the surging Raiders. Late in the game Steve Smith and Hall get into a war of words, but no melt down as Hall points to the scoreboard in a complete show of classlessness.

Game 10: Oakland Raiders at Miami Dolphins: Win 7-3

The Raiders have gotten a buzz from the media. The Raiders destroyed the 'Fins last year, and whilst the 'Fins have improved the Raiders are rolling at this point.

Game 11: Oakland Raiders at Denver Broncos: Loss 7-4

The Raiders come into this game riding a wave of confidence not seen from Oakland in a long while. This is a classic Raider-Bronco rivalry game that comes down to the final seconds. Ultimately, Mike Shanahan pulls a new trick out of his book and the Raiders lose a game that they should win.

Game 12: Kansas City Chiefs at Oakland Raiders: Win 8-4

The youth movement in Kansas City has started to gel by this point, but Larry Johnson has been hurt and the Chiefs just can't get it done against the Raiders.

Game 13 Oakland Raiders at San Diego Chargers: Win 9-4

The Raiders break their streak of futility against the Chargers. In this game McFadden does a Tomlinson impersonation by scoring a rushing and receiving touchdown as well as passing for a touchdown to Zach Miller. This one is close, but Phillip Rivers is intercepted by Thomas Howard in the endzone late as he tries to complete the game winner to Antonio Gates. After this game, ESPN even admits the Raiders are for real.

Game 14 New Englad Patriots at Oakland Raiders: Win 10-4

This game gets flexed to prime time. The Randy Moss and LaMont Jordan homecoming angle is played up huge. The lights come on and Asomugha and Hall give Brady fits. Trevor Scott gets to Brady twice for sacks. The Raiders continue grinding yards out on the ground to keep the Pats high octane offense off the field. In an upset that sends ESPN into fits of hysterics, the Raiders pull this one out with a long Janikowski field goal as time expires.

Game 15 Houston Texans at Oakland Raiders: Loss 10-5

The Raiders have yet to beat the Texans for some unknown reason. The Raiders are in a bit of a hangover after their upset of the Pats the week before and the Texans needing a win to keep their playoff hopes alive are the sharper team.

Game 16 Oakland Raiders at Tampa Bay Buccaneers: Loss 10-6

Once again the game is flexed to prime time. Both teams need the win to take their division. The story line is Kiffin versus Kiffin. Lane Kiffin as the head coach versus his dad Monte Kiffin as defensive coordinator. The lowlights of the Super Bowl disaster are all over the tube in the moments leading up to the game. The Bucs take this one as Kiffin senior takes his son to the woodshed.

This seems optimistic, but going game by game this feels like it could well happen. The Raiders have a tendency to win games they shouldn't like the Pats game above and lose games they should win like the Texans game. After the season, I'll revisit this post and compare my game by game predictions with the actual results.

Further, if you had as much positive energy or emotion referring to your own opinion rather than the negative energy towards mine, you could have created what it was you desired.

This is a little premature, don't you think? I love your optimism Patrick, and I share the same hopes that the team will finally get out of this five year funk. But... I think this is a 'wait and see' year. I do believe 8-8 is a possibility, but with very little depth on the roster, one or two injuries -or the O-line play alone - can easily make this another 4-10 season.

That being said, if Kiffin is allowed to stick around for season three, the playoffs will not be a hope any more. JR and McFadden will have a full year together under their belts and this team will be a force.

Go Raiders!

Patrick,

I agree w/R8er Ross. 8-8 at best, with the possibility of falling to 3-13 or 4-12...too much inexperience at 2 many places. Frankly, Im worried about Cutler coming in here and wreaking havoc, even w/o Marshall. If that happens, look for another dismal year. Wish I could agree with you. Maybe next year?

I'm optimistic about this team too. But more towards the next couple years with the maturity of Jamarcus Russel and McFadden.

I still think the O-Line is a big question mark.

Speaking of the O-Line: Have the Raiders looked into signing Willie Anderson (right OT from Bengles). Although he is past his prime..from my understanding everyone in Cincinnati is upset about the cut. He was a great character guy and still was quite productive on the right side of the line. He wasn't willing to take a pay cut. Al Davis needs to sure up this O-Line and Willie Anderson would def. do that.

Other than that..I am hoping for 8-8. That will be an improvement.

A porous O line.

A suspect receiving corp.

A rookie qb who still looks lost.

A porous D line.

Yeah, sure, that adds up to 10-6 :)

You've been eating those "special" brownies, haven't you, Patrick?

Willie Anderson is not a fit in our O line. he is to big and is not fast enough to run the ZBS. Other than that on another team Big Willie should do well. SF should pick him up.

Coach - 1-5 in our division? We did better than that last year. How can you think that a bunch of rookies, even in Arrowhead, can beat the Raiders at all? I see the Raiders winning at least 3 and maybe 4 of their divisional matchups this year. I'm holding back from any prediction other than that for now. :-)

Patrick I have heard you say on a number of occasions, including just days ago, that the Raiders would go 8-8. What made you all of the sudden change your prediction?

I have always said 9-7 mainly because you know the Raiders will give away one of the games that they should have won. Every team does it especially building ones. 10-6 would be if everything went right and that seems like pipe dreams.

wow c'mon coach, we might be inexperienced but there is too much talent on the defense for Oakland to look horrific this year. and offense is a working progress, but I only see them getting better, so much potential, #1 overall QB, #4 overall RB (suprised d-mac was out there for that pick), and not to mention the returning Fargas who is amped to finally give Oakland that respect they deserve. I love the critisim, because all of us Raiders fans ever deal with is critisim and this year I see us making a difference. 8-8 at best, good enough for me, a possibly a wild card shot. lets be real.

Coach E are you sure you are a Raider fan? Actually did you ever actually say you were I am not sure? Now that I think of it, all you ever do in here is bash Kiffin. Seems like a lot of wasted energy for someone who is not a fan.

Even John Clayton has us with a winning season heading into December. You have it all backwards. It is the early part of the season that the schedule is more manageable. You have us starting out the season 0-7? That sounds like pure Raider hater talk right there.

Here's the funny thing...

All of the energy you direct toward my post should be directed towards Mr. Patterson. He is THINKING with his heart, not his head.

I understand how each of you feel. I know its hard to want so badly for your team to have success. Sadly, as I have mentioned, this is not going to be the case.

I am a coach. I am also a fan. I am the truest fan the Raiders have. I think with my head and my heart collectively. The fact that any of you have a physical reaction to my post proves my point. Your negative energy, by becoming upset at my post, feeds into the pre-described event. If you truely believed in your opinion, you would not comment emotionally regarding mine.

I have said it before, and I'll say it again. I know more about this sport than anyone could, because I love it more, and have taken steps in my life to prove it!

That being said, I am human. The Raiders could win game 1!

There, I left a crumb of hope on the ground for ya!

"Hate me if you want to, but I love ME"

if you REALLY dont think the raiders are improved from last year... you dont know sh!t about football dude. the raiders lost 12 games after leading going into the fourth quarter.. thats just a lack of talent to hold on and get the job done.. which they have WAY more of this season. you couldnt count the talent on one hand last season.. and they were still were competative in most games.. and now you think they'll go 0-7? your not a true fan you're a true hater... you think with your head.. and you think you''r knowledgable.. but you're in fact just unrealistic.

Pat you are one optimistic dude, but 10-6? I would be elated to see it, but I'm a realist. 8-8, maybe 9-7. 10-6 and the playoffs is something that I really believe is a year away. They've come a long way, but they still have some rebuilding to do, so let's just call 10-6 wishful thinking for the time being.

How do you say 8-8 and call yourself a fan? You cant predict football. Any team can beat any team on any given day. The Giants proved that. You think the Raiders are in the locker room saying "C'mon Guys Lets go 8-8 this season". No, They are going into every game with the mindset that they will win it. If your a true fan and you bleed your teams colors You should be calling nothing less than 16-0, Whether its obtainable or not. Whomever your team is. Enough lame ass predictions, Let the season start. And to all the Haters Dont be jealous of fans that have pride for their team even when they are losing.

Here's my argument, again, for running the table on the AFC West (not named SD):

KC is worse than last season. They lost Jared Allen and they have no QB and no O-line. How are they going to score on our secondary? How are they going to create holes for LJ? How are they going to keep Cerberus off of the field?

Denver is worse than last season. Everyone keeps saying how awesome Jay Cutler is going to be, but based on what? The fact that he called his best WR a punk in the media? No way. They won on a cheap FG stunt once last year and got TORCHED when they showed their faces in Oakland. Their kicker is gone and so are their hopes of not sliding.

Well I just love this post. When you look at the upcoming season from far away you think that 8-8 is the realest thing possible...Yet if you look at it game-by-game like Patrick did, you see the makings of a major resurrection. I believe in the predictions Patrick made becuase he backed it up with great reason. Every game has it's reason why we should win. I like our chances and hope it comes true. 6 days till gameday, Let's muthaf*ckin go!

Can you send some of that reefer my way? lmao. You clowns are in for your sixth straight season of double digit losses. Your offensive and defensive lines are TERRIBLE, and anyone that knows anything about football knows that games are won and lost in the trenches. You are setting yourself up for a fall Patrick. Let me guess, I bet you predicted the Raiders to go 10-6 last year too, am I right? hahaha I can't wait to see the Raiders fall on their faces this year. Double digit losses again, Kiffin fired, the coaching staff deserting ship like rats and Al Davis blaming everyone but himself. This is shaping up to be another great season in Raiderland. hahahahaha

Simple reason.

You need everything explained to you, don't you?

Seriously. No smack intended. It's like talking to my kids..except they get it after a while.

You seem permanently "slow".

Of course, I know why you think we're one and the same.

We don't spell like shit, like most of you.

Seems we both made it that day 'speeling" was discussed.

Besides, I have you losing the second game with KC AND the game with Houston, for 3-11.

Oh..want another early prediction???

Tui will finish out the year.

Yeah, lol...probably sooner than you would like.

1. Russell struggles...mightily...running for his life...bad playing...get's benched.

2. Walter looks half way decent, surprisingly, but a blindside sack puts him out for the year.

3. Russell back in. See above regarding Kwame "was that my guy" Harris..and Russell goes down.

4. Tui goes in.

Yep..figured I would get it in print now so later you can revel at my brilliance....again...still.

Word Up Jared! I've been sayin the same thing for about three weeks now and get blasted for it. Every Sunday when I sit down to watch the game. I'm not sitting there to watch MY team lose. I'm thinking we can do it! We can do it all nite long! Where am I, what was I sayin? Anyways 11-5 and playoffs! Elkins you keep saying that your a coach and you know all about football. You even said in a earlier post that you would be working with coach Ryan next year. Remember that? So you were saying that your going to be the next coach of the Raiders? You also say that Kiffin is never optimistic and has no confidence. What about you? So lets say you are the coach of the Raiders next year. I can here your press confrence now. "Well we hope to go 5-11, sounds like a loser coach to me. I think TFDS should have a contest of who can predict the season closest game by game. Should probley have exact scores as a tie breaker. Hey Pat, Rob tell me what you all think and I'll get my prediction ready. Whats wrong about predicting? Its fun and everyone is probley going to be wrong about one game or another. Whos getting hurt?

5th Horseman-

While it appears we agree regarding a number of issues facing the Raiders once again this season, do you truely find enjoyment in rubbing it in?

Just wondering what it accomplishes?

I am sure concerning the loyalty these guys have shown to this site, that their loyalty is just as strong in reference to their team. I am sure you have better things to do than save predictions on your hard-drive only to use it to further rub it in-in the future.

If this is the case, please post your predictions for each game, and briefly explain your reasons for double digit losses.

You say you're a Coach? I too am a coach (Football and Baseball) and teacher only I'm fighting in Afghanistan currently. I find it odd a Coach who's probably a Teacher if you're even a coach can't spell truly : )

Oh and stop with the negative if you comment on me then it's negative energy conceptually like if you don't vote for me you're racist crap!!!

With a new (slow decision making / high % mistake making) starting QB and Not one single reciever of note that can go out a GET the ball 8 and 8 would be a gift.

Expect another Double D loss season. Your QB needs a season to mature and wont be showing any consistent play until late November-Mid December if your lucky.

Maybe next year Al Davis will spend $200 million gauranteed dollars on $40 million dollars worth of talent on the O side of the ball. -- Should have a good D secondary though. Too bad about that $50m Tommy Kelly disaster you're about to face.

Kelly has 1 season where he didnt end up injured, and in that season his sack numbers / tackles / QB pressures were under the league average. Every other year he's ended up on the bench. What the heck was Al thinking?

There is no way you guys beat San diego once this year....I'll give you beating the Chiefs at home but in Arrowhead i don't see it but anything could happen.....I do see you guys improving and i can't wait til both the Chiefs and Raiders are done rebuilding because in 2 to 3 years maybe less for you guys.... the chiefs and....the raiders will be sitting atop the AFC west standings.... maybe Oakland in first maybe KC in first but 2 to 3 years from now the Chargers will be no more and the Broncos are already in decline.....so though it pains me to say it....I hope you guys do well pretty soon so we can kick those asses and those bolts of the top of the ladder.....

But feel free to keep coming around.

I believe after monitoring the Dallas Cowboys training camp on Hard Knocks (HBO) they made a big mistake by cutting WR Todd Lowber...Why because he did not get enough time to show his true talents, He has more speed than whom the Raiders have right now at WR and able to catch the ball with alot more consistancy...MR. Davis should seriously consider this player before keeping the likes of the back-ups we have right now...I'm sure if he is given the chance to go deep JR could lead him and not worry about him closing for the catch with his quickness and agility...MR. Davis I know we could use him and not have to pay him as much as these other scrubs we are stuck with right now...What do you have to lose if you just give him a chance...Tired of looking at these back-ups whom are thinking about money before putting winning ahead of everything else...Looking foward to the season opener...We need anybody that can help us right now...Go Raiders!!!

Kushman is correct...The raiders have more gains this year than any team in the AFC West, we will win against Denver and KC this year with their losses, along with ATLANTA, MIAMI, HOUSTON, & TAMPA BAY..Yes kiffin sr will lose....anyway if your not a raider fan what are you doing posting comments here, you must be worried about the silver and black attack!! Stick to your own team and worry if they face the Raiders this year, cuz it will be a loss for you!! GO R8DERS!!!
