Strength against weakness: Raiders vs Broncos
This is part two of a three part series where we analyze how the Oakland Raiders stack up with the other teams in their division. We’ll start at the bottom and work our way up going by 2007 standings. This edition will have the Raiders going against the Broncos. If you haven't already seen part one versus the Chiefs, take a look here.
Will these two teams split again in 2008?
In 2007, these two teams split their annual home and away series. Even though neither team got bragging rights for the year, the two games favored the Raiders and were microcosms of the season for both teams. The Raiders played well enough to win both games, but like in many of the games lost in 2007, they found a way to let the game in Denver slip away.
The story of that game in Denver, and of the season, was the time out called just prior to the snap of a Janikowski field goal. In what seems to be a curse for the Raiders, the made field goal was ruled as a dead ball and appropriately enough Janikowski missed on the second try. The Raiders, other teams around the league, and even college football teams would be calling late time outs the same way for the rest of the year.
The Broncos had a Jekyll and Hyde type of season, where they would get destroyed by an opponent one week and then beat a better team the following. After 10 games, the Broncos had a .500 record only to finish the season at 7-9. They lost games to the tune of 41-3 and 23-3 to San Diego, 44-7 to Detroit, 31-13 at Houston, and 38-20 to Indianapolis. They crushed Kansas City 27-11 in Arrowhead, beat Tennessee 34-20, and Minnesota 22-19 at home.
As with the Chiefs, the Raiders will enter the season without a losing streak to the hated Broncos. In fact, they'll be trying to make it two in a row in Denver on the opening MNF game. Will they? Let's recap the rules of the analysis:
If you’re a regular visitor to TFDS, then you should be well aware of the strengths and weaknesses of the Raiders, but as we all know, even a teams’ greatest strength can become a weakness with the wrong matchup. These are the rules to this analysis:
- Points will be alloted by the level of dominance between 1-3 points, 3 being the most dominant rating.
- The following matchups are up for consideration:
- WR’s vs CB’s with line matchups taken into consideration.
- DT’s vs OG’s and OC
- DE’s vs OT’s
- RB vs LB’s with blocking matchups taken into consideration.
- FB and TE vs LB’s and Safeties with line matchups taken into consideration.
- QB vs QB with all other matchups into consideration. For this analysis, if all matchups are equal, it becomes a contest of which QB can NOT lose the game for their team.
So we’ll start off with the line matchups and work our way out to the skill position players.
Raiders Interior OL vs Bronco's DT's
For the Raiders, I like this matchup. The Raiders start Robert Gallery, Jake Grove, and Cooper Carlisle against Dewayne Robertson and Marcus Thomas. Although Robertson's specialty is stopping the run, the former Jet has never recorded more than 4 sacks in a season. This is a case of strength against strength, but Thomas is the wild card. Entering his second season, he played sparingly in his rookie season, recording only 19 total tackles and an interception. I don't see these guys slowing up 2007's sixth ranked rushing offense and I definitely don't see them sacking Russell.
After being called a bust as a tackle, Robert Gallery has moved to left guard and performed so well that many have forgotten he's on the team at times. Center Jake Grove, coming off of knee surgery, has gotten stronger in his upper body over the offseason and much bigger. How much mobility he's lost is yet to be seen, but if he can't handle the position, the Raiders have veteran starter John Wade on the bench. Cooper Carlisle may be the top right guard in the AFC West according to MVN's Chiefs writer Ryan Brown, but he's struggled at times during the preseason. Now that training camp is over, Raider Nation will be hoping that he'll return to form and be a force on the line.
Only two teams were worse than the Broncos in 2007 when it came to stopping the run, one was the Dolphins. Can you guess who the other team was? Yep, it was the taunted vaunted silver and black. We'll get to that later, but for now let's just say that this is a mismatch made in the Black Hole. Advantage: Raiders +2
Broncos Interior OL vs Raiders DT's
Denver was ranked ninth in rushing in 2007, so they weren't far off from having the same type of production as the Raiders. There has been some shuffling along the Denver line and the Raiders group of defensive tackles will need to play much better than they did last season. The Broncos feature Chris Kuper, Tom Nalen, and Brent Hamilton. The Raiders will be rotating Tommy Kelly, Terdell Sands, and Gerrard Warren. Tom Nalen is a perennial Pro Bowler, but his skills have declined. Chris Kuper has played in only one NFL game. Brent Hamilton is coming off of not playing in 2007 due to post-concussion syndrome and Nalen was lost last season due to a torn biceps injury, which can be career threatening for a lineman.
The Raiders aren't without their share of returning injured starters. Tommy Kelly was lost for most of last season due to a knee injury and Terdell Sands has had to have his knee drained a few times during training camp. Gerrard Warren played well in the first Raiders-Broncos game last year, recording a sack, but in the second meeting he was not as good. I've often reasoned that until a player shows me something, I'm going to go by his history. By doing that, I'd have to do the same with the Broncos interior. Advantage: Broncos +2
Raiders OT's and TE vs Broncos DE's
Kwame Harris, Cornell Green, and Zach Miller will go up against the Broncos' John Engelberger and Elvis Dumervil. Engelberger is better against the run and Dumervil is much better against the pass. Dumervil is coming off of recording 12.5 sacks in 2007 and if allowed to get around the edge, he will cause havoc on the passing game. Engelberger has only started a full season once in his career and has never had more than 6 sacks in a season (2004).
Unless Engelberger can't be stopped on Monday night, Dumervil will see plenty of Zach Miller helping to stop him. Kwame Harris is known to be a turnstyle from San Francisco, but throughout the preseason he has played better than his reputation. On the other side, Cornell Green has drawn the most criticism here at TFDS. As long as the Raiders don't get into too many third and long situations, they can keep the pass rush off-balance with play-action passes. Advantage: Broncos +1
Broncos' OT's and TE vs Raiders DE's
The Broncos are starting a highly touted rookie, a pick I had lobbied for the Raiders to take, at left tackle and a virtual rookie on the right who has played in 11 games, but never started one. Ryan Clady is that left tackle and Ryan Harris is the right tackle. The Broncos will also have Daniel Graham playing at the tight end position. Graham Clady and Harris could be pretty good, but I don't see that being the case in game one. Graham won't be the problem, it will be the inexperience of the tackles. Although I think Clady will be a star in the NFL, and Harris may prove to be pretty good too, I would be surprised if they were much better than average the first half of the season.
The Raiders come into the game with Derrick Burgess and Jay Richardson playing at the defensive end positions. Don't expect Graham to aid in stopping Burgess too often though. The Raiders have been experimenting with moving Burgess around the line in order to get him the best matchup possible. While he has not been the best run stopper in the past, he has been healthy this preseason and he looks better than he ever has. Richardson, the second year guy has also looked great. Richardson is much better against the run, but he's shown that he can rush the passer and get a hand in the face of the quarterback often. Advantage: Raiders +2
Raiders OL vs Broncos DL - Raiders +1
Broncos OL vs Raiders DL - EVEN
These scores will attribute to future scores so they are important. The theory that the game is won or lost in the trenches is definitely a factor in this analysis.
Raiders FB and TE vs Broncos LB's and Safeties
For the Broncos, they have Marquand Manuel and Marlon McCree at safety to go with Nate Webster at middle linebacker, D.J. Williams at the WLB, and Boss Bailey at the SLB. The Raiders have Zach Miller at tight end and Justin Griffith at fullback. While Griffith isn't the best blocking fullback in the league, he is a good one and Miller has shown that not only can he block, he can catch well too.
Besides Williams and Dumervil, the rest of the Broncos defensive group is rather week. Bailey was has at times been a great player, but he's never been consistent. Webster still hasn't shown that he can be a force in the middle. So far in his career, Zach Miller has proven that nobody can cover him in the passing game and with the Raiders ability to rush, y0u'd have to give them the overall edge. Advantage: Raiders +2
Broncos FB and TE vs Raiders LB's and Safeties
Peyton Hillis at fullback and Daniel Graham at tight end for the Broncos will have to face SLB Ricky Brown, MLB Kirk Morrison, and WLB Thomas Howard, while also lining up Michael Huff and Gibril Wilson at safety.
Hillis is a rookie fullback from Arkansas who can block, but rookies are going to have their trials. Daniel Graham will definitely aid in the run against a linebacking group that has been known to overrun the play. Ricky Brown will be tested as he'll be starting for the first time as a Raider. In the rushing game, you have to give the Broncos a slight advantage, but only slight.
In the passing game, the Raiders will be a force that Graham and Hillis will have trouble neutralizing. Morrison and Howard are two of the best coverage linebackers in the league and Gibril Wilson and Michael Huff have proven that they can make tackles and cover players out of the backfield or off the line. Advantage: Raiders +2
Raiders RB's vs the Broncos LB's
Fargas and McFadden should find daylight most of the day. While Michael Bush will be in for short yardage and some passing situations. By the end of the game, the Broncos LB's will be very tired of dealing with this trio. Advantage: Raiders +2
Broncos RB's vs the Raiders LB's
It has always been the rule, since Terell Davis entered the league, no matter who the Broncos line up at running back he'll gain a thousand yards. Selvin Young, Andre Hall, and Michael Pittman won't be gaining that many yards against the Raiders Monday night, but they will do well. Until the Raiders can prove to be sturdy against the run, you can't rate them that highly. Advantage: Broncos +2
Raiders WR's vs Broncos CB's
Champ Bailey and Dre Bly are Denver's corners while Javon Walker and Ronald Curry play receiver for the Raiders. This is a no-brainer really. Advantage: Broncos +2
Broncos WR's vs Raiders CB's
Another no-brainer with Asomugha and Hall covering whoever the Broncos can start. As of now, the Broncos are starting Darrell (stone-hands) Jackson and rookie Eddie Royal. Advantage: Raiders +3
QB vs QB
While I think that JaMarcus Russell will be a better quarterback than Jay Cutler in the long run, it would be unfair to acknowledge that Cutler has the advantage on him right now. Advantage: Broncos +1
OVERALL
These two teams play each other tough. Very few games over their storied history have been decided quickly. While the Broncos should have no trouble moving the ball and scoring, the Raiders will probably be able to tire out the Broncos defense and keep Cutler and company from getting too many chances. Both games between these teams should be tight, but the Raiders have gotten better than they were last year and won't allow the game to be decided on Janikowski's foot or Mike Shanahan's timeouts. Advantage: Raiders +5

You're an idiot...no science to your numerical assignments, it's all from the heart, and that's not an unbiased source you moron! Go back to your blackhole, A**H***

Newsflash to PortlandRaider....YOU're even worse, you dont have the intellect to read this dribble and see that is completely useless and unbiased. Stupid A**

OMG, a reader just called to remind me that this idiot commented that Russell will be a better QB than Cutler...ARE YOU SERIOUS? You bought yourselves another one dimension, run1st-pass2nd QB. You better hope that he even grades out better than the stepchild of running QB's...Vince Young. The father being Michael Vick. You're an idiot!

Peyton Hillis knows McFadden better than anyone in the blackhole bay area. Listen to his comments on McFadden..."Just hit him low, he cant stay up straight". You think the entire Denver D doesnt know that already. You better hope the Donks dont go ghetto on his ass and put a Tom Brady to the knees.

DarkDork-
Thanks for the comments...who looks like the idiot? Come back after tonight's game...if you dare show your ugly face....
Let's first see if they can catch McFadden!
Yeah, that's what Russell was at LSU..a run first QB..what a tool! Darkdork...
....and its looks like you have a bias as well Darkdork with your dribbling and useless comments...probably a DonkeysFan or Disencharger Fan....
AFC West look out cuz we are making noise and some folks nervous.

If the Raiders finish better than 6-10 it will be a major accomplishment. The Broncos suffered a rare losing season last season and are much improved this year. Russell may well be a good player down the road, but I think he'll have the typically "rookie" (even though he isn't technically one) mistakes.
I do think it'll be a close game, but I think that the Broncos will eek another one out. Good luck though and may the best team win.

The only way the raiders will loose this game is if the zebras make up new rules that nobody has ever heard of. I know that makes non Raider fans mad but anybody who knows anything about football is aware of the fact that the refs have taken away many games from the raiders that they had won fair and square! Sorry that is just a plain fact!

hey darkknight, your a dummy. U know why I say this? because your ignorance in thinking Russell is a run first throw second QB. Your an idiot, really. U probably haven't seen a down of Russell's college career. Did u make that assessment because he's a Black QB? Your a dummy. No one knows who will be better, but Russell's potential looks pretty promising. Since I don't follow Cutler to much, I won't comment on him. hint hint. Do the same kid. talk about the little you do know.

The reality is everybody loves the raiders and deep down is a raiders fan even if they will not admit it. This is true because even if you hate us you love us. For non Raider fans we are the team you love to hate! Plus we have the best colors and uniforms in the league. All the other teams have sissy girlie uniforms.

wow dark knight i hate to pile on but how can you act like you know anything about football at all..the fact that you think jamarcus russell is a run first qb shows that you have never seen him anylised on espn, read about him in an article, or obviously seen him play a single down..look up some of his stats and see how low his rushing attemts are moron. im only 16 but even i know not to comment on subjects im unfamiliar with, so you should probly stay away from football lol

Hey Niner reject reply back to my last comment before you talk trash..
Anyways if your not a Raider fan or a Bronco fan you have no purpose in commenting.. Now do you? So in other words fuck off! Oh & darkknight(original name by the way, no one would've ever thought of that one).. But where did you come up with that stupid comment that J.R is a running QB? No idiot he runs to avoid the pressure.. Thats called rolling out and/or avoiding the rush.. He's nothing like Vince Young or Mike Vick.. And you say the whole Broncos defense knows that they have to hit McFadden low, right? Well im guessing if an idiot like you knows that than so does McFadden & the Raiders..
GO RAIDERS!!!

Ok..."Ek says" For someonw who posts they had to read a blog 2x to determine that they wouldnt read it a 3rd time truly is the real "Dumbass". Thirdly, yes...you bought another lame, overweight, lazy, overhyped, run1st QB from a big time school. Hmmm...does that sound like any other current QB we can think of?...OMG, YES! It's Vince Young! Hey, you bought the 07 version of Vince Young for 2x the price. Be proud Raider fags. Be proud. OH, I will show my face in here after the game. And, Im looking for you Ek Says! PussyBoy! You butt pirates make me sick!
Your comments are of such worthless dribble, its no wonder you grow up to believing that 6-10 can contend for a superbowl. How does it feel knowing that there are 2 PAC 10 schools south of here that would kick your ass? By your previous records, and top 5 draft day picks, it shouldnt be long before you have 22 starters that are all top 5 picks. Really? It couldnt be that far around the corner?
I love the fact that you have no idea who Im pulling for..all you know it for sure that it's damn sure NOT YOU! Eat S*** and die you f8er A-holes!

Did you have to piss off Shanahan? Please pay him his money and change the karma. Please Al, you can work miracles right? Afterall, you talked Javon Walker out of retirement for a mere 55M. You truly are the "Magic Man"

I love the fact that you aren't a true fan of any team DarkDork...because you hide behind your hatred of the Ultimate Team..The Silver and Black...The Raider Nation.....
Step up and tell us who your team is....if you have one...is it the Giants this year?....maybe its not Patriots now because Brady went down....or the Chargers now cuz they lost...who is it now...or will you wait and choose "your" team later......

I would respond to the Russell is a run first QB comment but, it's just too stupid to say more than I have already. Next...
Russell, Fargas, Miller, Namdi all played well tonight. The run defense looked better. I have all the confidence in the world in #2. The unfortunate part is, is the part I've feared all preseason long and that is Cornell Green. Green must go. How can it not be more clear. Willie Anderson is long in the tooth and not used to the zone blocking system, but I'm sure he would have done better than Green. I wished we would've picked him up.
On the other side of the ball, what the hell was Ryan doing? I see why Kiffin wanted him out of there. Albeit, Ryan wasn't wearing number 24 missing tackle after tackle. He wasn't getting 15 yard penalties called against him for late hits, but the D looked pathetic.
Sadly, my 9 year old youth football team looked more sound than my Raiders did tonight. Ryan must go. Green must go. We need a left tackle and Harris needs to be moved to the right side. The WR's are going to have to play a lot better.
The one thing that bothered most was how flat the team seemed. It looked like they were running on the field for practice rather than a game against the hated Broncos.
Peace.

But it takes a real dickhead to come in here & talk trash when their team got beat to! cough, cough Niner's.. But your right if we play this bad against the Chiefs we will get smashed once again.. The only team i know won't beat us are the Niner's..

LMAO..that was ugly.
See, you should have listened, but you didn't, did you?
I hate being right all the time, but someone has to be right on every exchange..so it might as well be me.
Not sure who was harder on the Raiders..the announcers who pretty much got to the point of almost suggesting a mercy killing to just put the team out of it's pathetic misery, or the fans at the game.
All offseason...thread after thread of all you "DIEHARD" fans..where you idiots run the "We never leave early" crap, or the "We support our team, good or bad" crap, not to mention all of the "Russell =ProBowl" "McFadden Rookie MVP" "No one will throw on our D-backs GUARANTEED" comments..lol...ALL TOTAL BULLSHIT.
Considering all of the boo's, all of the fans cussing out and flipping off the team..all of the posters in the stands insulting pretty much everyone on the team, to the empty seats cascading across the coliseum after half time, it's obvious the fans at the game know what most of you don't.
Oh..BTW...yeah, my Niners lost as well.
5 turnovers pretty much sealed it for us. Even with 5 turnovers, was still only a 10 point game. Hey, no excuses. They earned the turnovers. They were flaky ones, they made it happen.
but the Raiders? You got dominated. Bitch slapped. Owned.
And exposed, lol...on National TV.
EVery team that's lined up to play you is licking their chops...counting on a BIG W.
Want the good news???
You can't play any worse...
See? Only one way to go :)

That's not flat "REBEL2124". That was just pure SUCKS TO BE YOU!!!!!!! I told you A-holes in the black bay area to get ready, but NOOOOOOOOO. You're so dillusional, you actually can't see things for what they are. Well, dumbass freaks...guess what? Tonite on national TV, the nation got to see what we already know..."You were who we knew you were". All those face painted fags looking like they just the plunger removed from their cracks, were mortified. The announcers tried not to say flat out that you SUCK, but you know during the breaks, they were saying OMG, let this beating stop. You pussies! You rejects! You losers! You Raiders! May not have taken Russell out of the game, but he become our "Bitch". And we did not McFaggen the F*** OUT! Told you so bitches. No, go back to your black hole and do what you dregs do..."Hug a tree, smoke a blunt, get burned, and hit the local McD's" Stayed tuned homo's ,another blog from the DARK KNIGHT next week. Good Morning Raider fags! Well, how many ways can I say this...Hmmm? Ok, "I told you so, I told you so, I told you so, I told you so, I told you so, I told you so. You freakin morons with your paint and bullshit about the glamour and mystique that are the Raiders. Well, MY Broncos kicked your ever loving ASS last night. I havent seen a brutal beatdown that bad in public since Ike went postal on Tina, "Hit her again Ike, but this time, put a little stank on it"!!!! Yeah, that's the way you all felt. Bitch slapped. You are all permitted to forget about last year's rememberance of your 34-20 win at home. It was a mirage! It was dream. Hey, "You can't go back to Oz Toto". It was burned down last night by a blazing Jay Cutler who's a true QB, not a fat, sloppy, run 1st poser like your Jamarcus (Vince Young) Russell. HA HA HA bitches. Better luck next week. You make me sick! Let's starting reading your new blogs today. Im sure you'll create a reason this beat down really wasnt as bad as it could of been...and you know what? You'd be right. Shanny took it easy after we scored the 41st point. We let you have a last touchdown, as Lelie was being covered by Karl Paymah, a 3rd string CB. OOOOH, but you thought it looked so awesome didnt you? Forget it! It's over! You year, your life, your team. See you in Denver you butt hole pirates! Next time we're going for 60 on your ass.

I hate Oakland so much but Niner they are a better football team than yours.....Oakland has weapons they are just having a hard time figuring out how to use those weapons, but the Niners.....the Niners have nothing man......ABSOLUTE FILTH! they have crap at WR......They have crap at QB they have a good RB but a Offensive corrdinator who won't know how to use him....... They are shit......it doesn't matter what you think Oakland will have 5 to 6 wins but will be in most games other than tonight and the 49ers will get smashed almost every game.....I don't like Jamarcus russell, but he is 1 million times better than Sullivan......and Mcfadden and Fargas will be way better than Gore.......so while this may be the only time i ever defend Pat.T.....i don't regret it because your team is going to have the number 1 or number 2 pick in the draft this year and Oakland and Kc will probably follow but i'll be damned if they are worse......peace out

I make no excuses we could have played a lot better, but the officiating again helped in the loss. A couple of things happened that could have changed the course of the game.
The clear defensive holding on Zack Miller the first time down in the red zone that wasn't called. That would've gave us first and goal and possibly a touchdown if Zack pulled away from the LB.
Branch fielding the punt that would've put the Broncos on the one yardline. The refs said Branch touched the line of the endzone. Looking at it again myself, I'd say that's pretty hard t do while you're in the air. Again, it would've gave Denver the ball on the one yard line rather than the 20. Field position is an important part of the game.
The no call on the block in the back on Huff on the long pass to the Broncos TE. The block in the back is down the field, but it was still a block in the back that wasn't called that would've backed the Broncos up. The no call ended in points for Denver.
These were just a few I noticed right off and I'm certain there had to be others. The Raiders need a staff person on duty soley for taking note of these things game after game and complaining to the league. Enough is enough.
Peace.

maybe there were a few calls that could have helped the Raiders but come on man.....The Raiders got blown out because Denver was a better team, but the Raiders also killed themselves with stupid personal fould i counted 3 and i bet there were more.....Hall got two and one of the lineman got frustrated and committed a stupid foul........You can not blame the REfs for the beating Oakland took.....granted i think you guys will get alot better but your team lost, don't blame the Refs

Ian while your right that we got blown out if the refs call pass interference when Dre Bly was holding Zach Miller's jersey on our first drive it could've changed alot because it would've given us a 1st & goal at about the 3 yard line. And it would've obviously avoided the fumble. Though i still think we would've lost, it would've kept us in the game.. Anyways its time to turn the page & start thinking about KC..
GO RAIDERS!!!
