Fire Frerotte

I’m sorry for the timing of this post, but I have been busy today with an undoable English paper.

Following the Rams’ awful 24-19 loss to the Seahawks that officially eliminated them from NFC West division title contention, there are only a few observations I can make:

1. Gus Frerotte needs to go. Yes, he had an adequate game filling in for the concussed Marc Bulger. But that last drive, the one that could and should have won the game, the one that would have kept the Rams alive for at least another week, failed because of Frerotte. To wit: First down and goal, Frerotte sees a wide-open Isaac Bruce — and I mean wide open — right in front of his face, and throws the pass into the ground. And then on fourth down from the “as close as you can be without actually scoring a touchdown” line, the play that will live in infamy: with the game on the line, Frerotte fumbles the snap! I understand that this is a backup with limited playing time, but the Rams are a professional football team, and games need to be won or lost by actual football plays, not kiddie-league mistakes like this. Do the Rams even stand a chance against lowly Atlanta if Frerotte starts next week? I find it doubtful right now.

2. This team should forfeit second halves. They would probably give less games away if they just didn’t show up after halftime. Seattle outscored St. Louis 17-0 in the second half of yesterday’s game. A single touchdown anywhere, anytime in the second half, or stiffer defense on just one Seattle drive, would have won this game for the Rams. Instead, the defense and offense fell apart in the second half as has become the custom, and St. Louis picked up its ninth loss of the season and avoided its first home victory since Christmas Eve last year.

3. Will Witherspoon is a beast. Seattle’s offensive line came into the game having given up 3 sacks in its last 3 games. Witherspoon alone, on consecutive plays, got two sacks on Matt Hasselbeck. With Leonard Little out, Witherspoon is far and away Jim Haslett’s best pass rusher and one of the only reasons (along with Fakhir Brown and Tye Hill, to a much lesser extent) this defense is still moderately competitive.

That will have to suffice for my postgame observations as I really have to return to this English paper. But before I go, I would like to congratulate Missouri’s football team on its new position as the #1 team in the land. Good luck against Oklahoma next week, Tigers!

And, most importantly, the Eagles proved yesterday that the Patriots are not invincible. The remarkable stand A.J. Feeley and his gang put up against a shocked Brady in Foxboro was nothing short of fantastic and gives me hope that perhaps, come February, there will be no ticker-tape parade in Boston.

Pretty funny how your blog is entitled “Fire Frerotte”, and minutes before you, I blogged one entitled, “Promote Brock”.

Rams fans are eerily in sync, wouldn’t you agree?
Of course you would - you probably thought that before I asked you.

    Good stuff, Punit.

X, that really is perfect. Now if only the coaches listened to us…
