Throwing Our Support

In the field of journalism, there are very few times when a writer has the ability to directly affect the outcomes of the games, situations and events he or she covers.

In fact, by the very definition and nature of our job, we are required to remove ourselves from action. It’s a tough fact to learn, and I’m dealing with it myself in my work here at the University of Missouri’s Journalism School.

I was extremely pleased, then, to be asked to write a letter of support for Roman Gabriel by a group making a bid for his election to the NFL Hall of Fame. As I wrote in my article a couple months ago, that recognition and the fame bestowed upon many of his peers has eluded Mr. Gabriel, and I was thrilled to be able to throw my support his way.

There are very few times in life when we’re presented with an opportunity like this to help someone else in an act that bares no direct outcome on us. I encourage all of you, if given the chance, to make a similar stand for Mr. Gabriel in any way you can - let your peers know about his feats and his current situation, write in to your local papers, do whatever you can to help this great man out.

I’m sorry to interrupt the normal RAMblings schedule with this - especially something that doesn’t contain much new information - but I wanted to try to get everyone on this site together on this. I truly do believe that together, we can make a difference.
