Four Legs Good, Vol. 20

Today, an analyst on SportsCenter on ESPN proclaimed that Darren McFadden’s announcement that he’s bolting for the NFL as expected makes Run DMC a virtual lock for the Miami Dolphins’ pick, the first overall in the draft.

Now, me, I think the Dolphins have many more glaring needs - particularly along the offensive line, in the secondary and at receiver - than running back, where they already have Ronnie Brown, who started 2007 on a tear before injury, and Jesse Chatman, who proved a capable replacement in Brown’s stead. But Rams fans everywhere should be rejoicing at this news.

Of course, it’s only the opinion of one analyst at a time when mock drafts are several weeks premature. No matter how he presents himself, he, like everyone else, has no idea how the Dolphins will draft come April. But the prospect of McFadden being off the board at number two seems a rather enticing proposition to me.

I know what you’re all thinking: “But Brett, you’re the one that’s been advocating trading down this whole time; doesn’t McFadden being off the board make that a lot harder to pull off?” Well, in a word, yes.

However, that assumes that the Rams would trade the spot anyway, which certainly is a risky proposition. The Dolphins’ pick of McFadden would take a talented, tempting player off the board, leaving the Rams to concentrate on the positions on their roster that need bolstering (and there are several). While I’m one for drafting the best player on the board, there has to be some kind of balance between want and need. We don’t want to turn into Detroit South here, people!

And you know what that means. We can select my boy, the one, the only, Glenn Dorsey!

- At least we had one player who could wait until the offseason.

-  Some interesting thoughts by VanRam at  Turf Show Times. His opinion on multiple issues lies eerily parallel to our own here at RAMblings. Wonder if that’s a good thing or bad thing? (Wait, don’t answer that.)

- Not only is it a “lesson learned the hard way,” it’s a lesson learned twice. Hopefully the third time’s a charm on this one.

- Nick Wagoner hands out his awards for the 2007 Rams. Unlike the Pro Bowl voting, there aren’t too many snubs here.

- This isn’t relevant to the current Rams, but it’s a nice nod to the Rams of old. Kurt Warner and Marshall Faulk break down what Mike Martz’s hiring means for the 49ers. And while we’re on the topic of Martz, apparently the Lions are farther behind than the 5-11 Niners. Doesn’t look good for Matt Millen.

- A few more assistant candidates for the depleted Rams staff.

Everyone feeling the effects of Rams withdrawal, take a break from that postseason football and head over to stlouisramsx. There are plenty of good topics to sink your teeth into and will hopefully help tide you over until the fall.

Remember to vote on our new poll! See you all soon.

I wouldn’t call McFadden a virtual lock for the Dolphins. They already have two serviceable backs, and Bill Parcells doesn’t like picking RBs so early, as their average career length doesn’t come close to that of an offensive or defensive lineman. I’d be surprised if the Dolphins didn’t try to shop that pick.
