I am happier than Rosie O’Donnell during ladies night at the all you can eat buffet. Had a great weekend, got out into the sunshine and just plain old had a good time. I truly hope everyone enjoyed the beautiful weekend as much as I did.
I was talking with a friend recently and something she said reminded me about some classes I had while recruiting for the Army about the psychological relationship between character and personality. She wonders how someone can be one way for so long and then change into a completely different person almost overnight. I bring this up because something I read today reminded me of it again.
Everyone has a personality they put on display to everyone they meet. They may change their personality depending on the weather, the season, who they are around, etc. In recruiting I had to be like a cameleon, that is what most people in sales have to do. They have to adapt their personality to the person they are selling. Basically everyone will change their personalities many times over the course of their lives. But no matter who you are personality wise, every once in a while the real you will seep out. That is your character, good or bad.
Your character is who you are, your personality is what you are to others. Your character is what makes your decisions, the choice between right and wrong. So no matter what personality you may try to display, eventually your true character will take over and that is when you either do the right thing, or the wrong thing, or in this case say something absolutely telling of who you really are.
I was reminded of this again today when reading some quotes attributed to Jamal Lewis, former Ravens running back. Jamal was talking about the difference between his team now and the team in Baltimore. “It’s a myth when people say I was injured, I was this, I was that,” Lewis said. “It was just the position I was in, and where I was at. Now I’m with a better team, I’m around better players, and I have help. In the place I was in before, I had no help, so … it’s a much better situation.”

Mike Z., I think I get your point: Jamal is showing a lack of character with these remarks (because he did get a LOT of help in Baltimore)…he is making excuses for his last two Ravens’ seasons by blaming the team that was around him. Meanwhile, he is putting on a new personality with the Browns. That bright and shiny Jamal will last only as long as the Browns keep winning.

or as long as he has as many carries as he thinks he should. The comment about the injury myth really got me. I may be old but I seem to recall that it was Jamal himself who said he was playing injured.

Character is measured by what its up against.
Mr. Lewis’s score is quite low as of now…
