Redskins - Bears Trade, Part II: Lance Briggs?
Maybe the lingering effect of the Adam Archuleta deal feels so good that it opens the door to another deal. Maybe it is too much to expect a Redskins off-season to pass without a Snyder special. Maybe Marcus Washington is more hurt than we know. Or, maybe Drew Rosenhaus, Washington’s agent of choice, is spreading disinformation as a negotiation tactic. Whatever is behind it, word on the street (ESPN) is that the Redskins are close to a deal with the Bears to swap its first round draft choice for disgruntled OLB Lance Briggs.
Briggs was incensed that Chicago placed the franchise tag on him, restricting his ability to negotiate a long term contract at market value with another team. He threatened to sit out the 2007 season, proclaiming his intent not to play for the Bears again. Rosenhaus described a deal with the Redskins as “a strong likelihood,” according to Len Pasquarelli’s story on ESPN.com. Earlier this month, Rosenhaus described the Seahawks and 49ers, along with the Redskins, as potential trade partners with Chicago, claim refuted by the Seahawks.
Daniel Snyder has a reputation as a splashy dealmaker. Some, like the Bailey for Portis and the Coles for Moss trades have been hits, but most have not panned out as well as expected.
The Redskins signed MLB London Fletcher-Baker early in free agency. If this deal is concluded, the Skins would have a potent linebacker corps, assuming Marcus Washington’s return to good health. It would raise questions about the status of Lemar Marshall, who filled the gap in the middle when the Redskins let Antonio Pierce slip away. The move would also betray a lack of confidence in 2006 second rounder Rocky McIntosh, who has had difficulty breaking into the starting line-up. The move would not address the Redskins crying need for a pass rusher. Washington was projected to take DEs Gaines Adams or Jamaal Anderson with its first draft pick.
Pro-Bowler Briggs is credited with 365 solo tackles and 3.5 sacks in his four year career. He played college ball with Arizona.

[…] Briggs seems to have the leverage here as he’s willing to give up a chunk of change this year to minimize his injury risk so he can get the big bucks guaranteed next year. The Bears (and you better believe other owners are watching) have to tread carefully or the franchise tag becomes more of a joke than it already is. If they give into Briggs and Rosenhaus, they might be opening up a can of worms. However, if they let him sit out the ten games, they have a distraction for ten games and there is no indication that Briggs will be in game shape for their (expected) playoff run. This of course has the Redskins faithful abuzz with a possible trade for Briggs. We don’t have anything to say,” team president Ted Phillips said Monday. We franchised him. He’s going to make a lot of money. We think he’s a good player, and we want him on our team. It’s as simple as that from our standpoint. […]

Giantman, now THERE’S a thought. Acquire Briggs as trade bait. So, I’ll see your bid of a 1, a 3 and Torbor, and raise you Briggs and Chgo’s #1, for your 1, 3 and Kiwanuka.
Seriously #1, you already have my linebacker, Antonio Pierce.
Seriously #2, This deal makes no sense to me. Linebacker is not the Skins’ most critical need.

This will help the Skins because I think @ #6 they will be forced to pick either Gaines Adams or A DT such as Alan Branch. I think DL is weak in this draft and can do just as well picking at 31 instead of 6 and get themselves some depth at linebacker. Personally I think Willis from Miss will be the best D player drafted.

As an organization, we are not showing to much respect for last years 2nd round draft pick McIntosh. But if there was a way to trade Briggs for Fletcher and Mcintosh and a pick next year I feel that would be cool

Hello. Does not anyone consider that acquiring Briggs WOULD solve our D-line problems!!! We can switch to a 4 linebacker scheme Washington, Briggs, Fletcher and Marshall with 3 down of Carter, Salave’a/Griffin, and (have wynn, phillips, golston and even McIntosh to package for a very solid DE) This also works even IF Washington is hurt because Carter can play outside lb in a 4 lb scheme. I am PRAYING for BRIGGS! HAIL TO THE REDSKINS!

Bruce, a switch from a 4-3 to a 3-4 is more complicated than that. It changes the way you cover and the d-linemen have different assignments. It’s like bringing in a new offensive coordinator with new schemes. It will take a season to get it right.
btw, Are you the Batman?
