Redskins Sign Beasley
The Washington Redskins continue to play musical roster by signing free agent fullback Fred Beasley. Running back Dee Brown was released to make room on the roster.
Beasley is best remembered as a blocking back for the San Francisco 49ers. He entered the NFL in 1998 and was named second team All-Pro by the Associated Press in 2002 and 2003 when he was the lead blocker for Kevin Barlow.
In 2004, Beasley and Barlow were critical of wide receiver Brandon Lloyd, whom they considered something of an under-performing showboat. Lloyd responded in the next game against the Seattle Seahawks with four catches for 75 yards and a touchdown.
Barlow will be 33 in September. He joins other thirty-something players Todd Pinkston, Randall Godfrey and Pete Kendall who were signed in recent days. Godfrey and Kendall were added to fill holes in the roster. Godfrey was added after Marcus Washington dislocated his elbow in the Steelers preseason game. Kendall was signed to address growing concern with the left guard situation. Both are considered upgrades over talent already there.
Todd Pinkston was signed when the coaching staff concluded that the team needed a “complimentary wide receiver” to relieve defensive pressure on Santana Moss. His signing signaled that Antwaan Randle El and Brandon Lloyd may not be the compliment needed.
Why is Fred Beasley here? The Redskins are happy with Mike Sellers as best I can tell. Depth behind Sellers may be a concern.
All four of these players were available during the offseason. Beasley, Pinkston and Godfrey were free agents who were inactive throughout 2006. Kendall’s beef with the Jets was known before the draft. Yet, the Redskins are making the roster moves after the OTAs and the start of training camp. Something is up at Redskins Park.
