DONE DEAL: Redskins Re-sign Cooley
It’s worth shouting from the rooftops. The Washington Redskins signed ace tight end Chris “Capt. Chaos” Cooley to a new contract. The news comes as a relief to every burgundy-blooded fan, as well as to the coaching staff and to Cooley himself.
“I felt like this was such a great fit to be a part of the Redskins,” said Cooley. “My only concern was I wanted to be here forever. Just to know that I am–it’s seven more years, we extended it six years. I could play my whole career with the Redskins–that’s an unbelievable thing and it’s an awesome feeling.”
I heard that, Chris Cooley! And here’s to the Redskins front office for getting this done. As a frequent critic, I’m happy to give credit where it’s due.
See the story at redskins.com.
Cooley was in the fourth year of his rookie contract. His career record to date is 165 receptions for 1822 yards and 19 touchdowns according to www.pro-football-reference.com. He was the number two receiver on the team in 2005 and ‘06.
Cooley is one of the better decisions of the much maligned Redskins front office. In 2004, Joe Gibbs narrowed the choice for the team’s no. 1 draft pick to safety Sean Taylor, or tight end Kellen Winslow, Jr., both of the University of Miami. Gibbs was the offensive coordinator for the San Diego Chargers when the senior Winslow was in his heyday. Winslow, Jr. would have been a sentimental pick.
Instead, Gibbs chose Taylor with the first pick and the front office turned up Cooley in the fourth round. Cooley is ahead of Junior by 16 touchdowns.
Got to give a pat on the back to Vinnie Cerrato on that one.
Like I said, credit where it’s due.
