They’ve Done It! Redskins Clinch Wild Card Birth with Win
The Washington Redskins defeated the Dallas Cowboys 27-6 to secure a birth in the NFC Wild Card game next week, effectively pulling off the second December 4+ game winning streak in the last three seasons.
Todd Collins threw for 244 yards on only 31 attempts (7.9 y/a), and Clinton Portis broke 100 yards on only 25 carries to lead the Redskins.
The defense was outstanding, allowing 1 yard rushing on 16 carries. Dallas has not run for fewer yards in team history. Tony Romo did not have any success throwing the football against the Redskins, throwing 16 times for a mere 86 yards in the rain.
For Collins, this caps off an improbable playoff run for a guy who had not started a game since 1997, and hasn’t been picked off in the same amount of time. Collins signed a two year deal with the Redskins in 2006, and is scheduled to hit the open market next season. Collins likely will want to be back, but may very well have earned a multi year deal. He will be 37 next season, so if a team comes knocking with a million dollar offer, Collins would be foolish not to take it.
In the short term however, the Redskins do have a bit of a QB controversy. There is no doubt in this writers mind that the Redskins are obligated to start the best player in the playoffs, not the hottest player, but who exactly is the Redskins best quarterback? Is it Campbell or Collins?
Should be an interesting week here at Hog Heaven.

No, the only option is Collins. There is no controversy this season. Let’s not go there. Collins has earned the right to lead this team till the end of the season, even if it means going down with the ship.

No way Collins doesn’t start. He’ll see this thing through.
Winning by 21. Very special.
We can beat Seattle. Let’s continue to play for Sean and hopefully we’ll see those Cowboys again in 2 weeks!

OMG! Collins is an unrestricted free agent at the end of the season.

Playoffs should no doubt go to Collins!! But heres the question, next season, do we try to keep Collins and give him a first string shot or do we let Campbell keep it? I say hes earned a right to at least try for the spot!!! But while he did a GREAT job tonight, lets not forget the wonderful receivers as well!!!! Not to mention Greg Williams who may be the best thing to happen to the skins! Either way, we’ll be knocking Dallas out the playoffs in 2 weeks!!!!!

Hey Steph, I think the Redskins should focus on getting as far ans they can with this group, because there’s sure to be LOTS of changes in the off-season.
1. Gregg Williams will get calls for head coach interviews.
2. Shawn Springs will not accept the new contract the Skins will offer. Free agency, here he comes.
3. Cap hits for the release of Brandon Lloyd and — surprisingly — Sean Taylor!
4. Free agent Rock Cartwright wants to be a starting running back, somewhere.
5. 37 y.o. Todd Collins can probably stand the rigors of one full season. This is his one chance to cash-in. Yet, the best place for him is in Al Saunder’s offense. He won’t be as successful anywhere else.
6. Al Saunders is committed to the development of Jason Campbell to make the more talented Campbell as effective as Collins has been.
7. Whether Saunders remains depends on whether Gibbs remains and in what role. If Gibbs remains HC, Saunders stays. If Gibbs removes himself “upstairs,” a new HC will likely insist on his own coordinators.
All that and the Cowboys can wait. Seattle first.

Brian-
There’s no doubt that Collins has earned the right to start in the playoffs, but that doesn’t necessarily mean that it’s the right decision. The right decision in this case plays the guy who gives us the best chance to win.
Of course, it’s hard to make a case that Collins isn’t that guy right now, but if Coach Gibbs feels like Collins’ luck is about to run out, then Campbell has to be the guy.
This week of practice should be key.

I think Rock is still under contract for another season.

I think you stay with Collins for the playoffs… He got the Redskins there. Also he knows the WHOLE playbook and that has helped the offense to score points and keep oppossing defenses off balance. Jason is our franchise QB and he should be our starter when the season starts next year, if we start getting into if Collins should start next year or actullay choose him as the starter at QB next year, we are only going to hinder Jason’s development (Which he has made great strides) Just imagine when Jason’s mind fully understands this offense, with the talents he has.. if Todd can do this, imagine Jason… This offense will be hard to stop! Lets enjoy this run and root for our team against Seattle. Hopefully we will get to play another week!! GO SKINS!!!!!

Rock triggered a clause in his contract that will allow him to be a FA after this season

Seattle will be tough. The fans will make it hard on the offense. But if Washington can score early and get pressure on Hasselback they’ll have a chance.

Did Steve Young’s development get hindered by sitting the bench for 5 years under Joe Montana? Campbell’s problems are in his own head and he needs to develop more with the offense off the field. He doesn’t have confidence in his team and he makes too many mental mistakes.
As far as Seattle goes, if we can outscore the number one offense in the NFC 21 to 3 and hold the entire team to 1 yard rushing, then Seattle won’t be a problem and I’m looking forward to seeing us in the NFC championship game!!!!
p.s. Dallas SUCKS!!
