Ancient Chinese Proverb

Ancient Chinese Proverb: Be carefull what you wish for because it may come true.

Time after time in this column we hammered on Dan Snyder stating that the Redskins needed a General Manager in the worst way.

And that’s just how we got one.

In a statement released earlier today by the Redskins, Vinny Cerrato was named to the new position of Executive Vice President/Football Operations.

Cerrato is now fully in charge of all aspects of the team’s football organization, including personnel, the team roster, scouting and salary cap management.

Gibbs showed his class by stating: “Vinny worked closely with me on all personnel matters. This is a well-deserved acknowledgement of that.”

Gibbs further stated: “Today’s Washington Redskins roster is a testament to Vinny and the personnel department being an integral part of our team structure in identifying players, whether acquired in free agency, the draft or on sometimes very short notice as we made our way through the season.”

If you were worried about team cohesion and continuity you can find both of those concerns checked at the door along with sanity and reason.

I sense a long drought coming on.

Well, as a glass-half-full kinda guy, at least now there is a more direct line of responsibility. The way things were you never knew who was making a decision or who was accountable for it if that deciion failed. Was it Gibbs? Snyder? Vinny? Now, at least in title, Vinny is The Man. All blame must funnel to him. Granted, we’ll all still wonder if he isn’t making decisions as instructed by The Daniel, but the accuontability chart now points squarely at Vinny.

Of course, as long as Vinny continues to be a fun racquetball opponent, he’ll never be fired no matter how bad his decisions are, but it seems like a baby step towards something better.

Vinny is Dan’s man. Not because he excells at managing personel and talent evaluation but because he is Dan’s enabler.

With Gibbs in place, the personel decision making process flowed from Gibbs with Vinny having input and providing the leg work. Dan got to sit at the big boys table and thrill at the high-level planning eminating from his hero.

With Gibbs gone, Dan has apparently decided that he learned enough sitting in the backseat watching Gibbs the last four years and is now ready to take the wheel again and give it a whirl. Promoting Vinny was one key indicator of his thought process. His coaching candidate selections are the second and most telling indicators. They are either friends of Vinny (Mora and Ryan) or are desperate for a job and won’t stand up to Snyder as long as they get the headset (Fassel). The fact that he is not seriously considering internal candidates who have better qualifications and know the team/system is the final indicator because all of those people are hard-nosed football men who want to keep the status quo (they direct, Vinny supports and Dan gets to fascinate but not dabble).

    It’s coming. Just wait.

yes, I too was wishing for a GM, but a professional shrewd talent evaluator, not Vinny Cerrato.

well, it could be worse, at least Snyder doesn’t show up on the sidelines at the end tight playoff games.

    yet.
