Rock stars on the Redskins: Jason Taylor and Colt Brennan
Two of the biggest “names” on the Washington Redskins have never played a down in the Burgundy & Gold. Yet, they have the two most recognized names on the team. By that I mean outside of the normal Redskins fandom.
FOX-5 TV interviewed fans at training camp this morning and observed that many, MANY of the female fans were there to see Hollywood hunk Jason Taylor, whose good looks and killer dance moves attract a whole new audience to the team.
I don’t know, but I suspect TV ratings for the opening game against the Giants will get a bump in viewership just from Taylor’s new found fans.
I have readers on Hog Heaven who want me to tell Daniel Snyder that he’s missing a bet by not opening a Redskins Store in Honolulu where Colt Brennan has a huge following awaiting the day he becomes the starter for the team. I tell ya, this kid is a rock star.
“Colt Brennan” out polls any other Redskins player as the top Google keyword search bringing traffic to Hog Heaven. That’s why I’m happy to mention Colt Brennan in this story.
Sam Hollenbach had local following after his career with the University of Maryland Terrapins. He was no match to Brennan as a draw. Neither was Jordan Palmer nor Casey Bramlet last year.
If anything, we might see a bit of Brennan this preseason and more of him next season. I want to see him play, just to see what the fuss is about.

Yup! Hawaii fans looking for anything to do with Brennan have indeed found Hog Heaven via Google.
And I’d have to agree with the Redskin store in Honolulu. You wouldn’t believe what legions of fans endure just for the *chance* to get Brennan’s autograph.
It’s no surprise to see Taylor’s popularity as a new Redskin, but others have to scratching their head wondering how can a 6th round pick generate this kind of buzz.
Nice article. Mahalo (shakah sign)

Brennan is tough

The skins would be doing themselves a serious favor to allow Brennan to compete for the starting role. Yes he is unproven but he broke nearly all of the NCAA passing records and is the most accurate passer in NCAA history completing something like 71% of his passes. He is also tough, the guy can take hits like the best of them and he has a good strength of character.
Some argue that he played in the “weak” WAC division in college and that his stats are not worthy. I would love to see someone else complete 71% of their passes and break most of the NCAA passing records in a 3 season period of time. Also these people forget that he knocked of Boise State who only a year before had beaten Oklahoma in one of the most exciting bowl games in BCS history.
Brennan’s got a cannon, can throw on the run, has proven that he’s accurate, and he’s also proven that he is tough. He should at least be given a chance. I just don’t see Jason Campbell as the Redskins quarterback of the future.

Re. Brennan playing in the WAC so that should dismiss his unbelievable stats over a 3 year career.
The way I see it, he mostly played against WAC talent, but he also was surrounded by WAC talent. How he did against comparable team talent is what should be paid attention to - not how he played against Georgia where Hawaii showed up at a gun fight with a water gun.
In Washington, he’ll have comparable team talent against everyone. Brennan should do well with his pinpoint accuracy, very quick release, and that thing referred to as “iT”.

You can imagine our disappointment when we first went to the Redskins store to get a #5 jersey replica - only to find that shipping was available only to the continental US.
Or maybe you can’t.
This has been the reality for Hawaii and Alaska - when is a state of the US not a state? When it comes to buying things.
Thank goodness for Amazon.com most of the time.
But I digress.
Colt Brennan is the real deal. Those of us who have seen him play can’t wait to see him light up the field, win the hearts and minds of his teammates and make history!

We don’t have a professional football team in Hawaii, so University of Hawaii Athletics has in many ways filled the void of Hawaii sports fans. We love it when one of our teams, athletes or really anyone from Hawaii makes it to the national spotlight, the state went bonkers when a local singer was on American Idol! Personally, I’m a Hawaii-Born Redskin fan because my father became a fan when he was stationed in Arlington VA. He still can’t make it through a game without mentioning at least once “Riggins would have scored on that drive.” I’ve had a Google Email alert on “Colt Brennan” for nearly two years now and I find myself reading almost every article that mentions his name because now they have something to do with the Redskins as well. By the way, I also follow the Hamilton Tigercats in the CFL because Timmy Chang (Brennan’s predecessor) is a third string QB up there. It’s not an obsession, it’s not an obsession, it’s not and obsession…..

As a life long Cowboys fan I despised the Washington Redskins. I cringed everytime I heard “Hail to the Redskins” sung by ardent skins fans. If you want to know what kind of impact Colt Brennan has had on us here in Hawaii, I’ll give you one example. I’m now humming “Hail to the Redskins” (albeit, not in public) and could care less what the ‘Boys do this year. Go Colt!!!

[…] Brennan was and how he was destined to succeed (the Colt Brennan effect has been mentioned on a few blogs now, mention his name and traffic goes through the roof), it was a scene reminiscent of the Gator-skins […]
