Black and Gold Soul

Running Diary of Saints vs. Seahawks

7:23—Mack Strong, now that guy is a stud.  How do you play 15 years in the NFL at fullback at not be stud.  He’s a headbuster, bottom line

7:25—Second play from scrimmage and the Seahawks find a wide open receiver for a 15 yard pick up.  I have a sneaking feeling that’s going to happen a lot tonight.

7:27—Hollis Thomas gets a sack.  Let’s hear about how bad the Saints have been so far this season getting sacks John Madden.  Thank you, we’re working on it.

7:28—Pierre Thomas finds the endzone!  Muffed punt, Saints recover for a TD.  What a perfect play for the Saints confidence.

7:31—Who is the white guy on special teams wearing number 39?  Steve Gleason.  I thought he was out for the year.  He is out for the year.  I must solve this riddle shortly.

7:33—The Saints defense looks like it’s actually worth a damn.  This can’t keep up.  I predict a 50+ yard touchdown pass by Hasselbeck before 8:00 p.m.

7:38— Is a camera really this important?  Can you actually delay a football game because a camera isn’t working.  Cameras have been getting way too much attention this year in the NFL.  Now we get to hear John Madden try to generate conversation without any football to talk about.  It’s 30 minutes into the game and I think I’ve already seen all of downtown Seattle in its entirety.

7:42—Back to football.  Saints get two consecutive defense stops.  They look good.  The defense does at least.  Let’s see what the offense has got.

7:44—Reggie Bush breaks a 30 yard run on a fake reverse.  The fake worked, just ask the camera man.

7:46—3rd and 8 on the 40 yard line and you run a draw with Stecker?  What’s the deal Payton?  Terrible call.

7: 51—Saints are playing good pass defense.  Great pass defense actually.  Why do I feel like Hasselbeck is just toying with them?  He’s probably just waiting for the second half to throw for 6 touchdowns.  Just to see if he can do it in one half.

7:56—Can we please open up the field Payton?  Check down are getting a little old.  By the way, it looks like Bush might get 30-35 touches tonight.

7:58—Can someone explain to how Eric Johnson recovered that fumble?  Hey can someone also tell me why Devery Henderson is still employed in the NFL?  That guy couldn’t catch AIDS if he stuck his hand in a bucket full of infected needles.

8:02—Payton’s opening it up a little.  Bush is in the zone tonight.  He might have 100 yards before half.

8:03—End of 1st quarter.  I’m taking a break to eat dinner.

9:10—The score at halftime 28-10.  Saints are up.  I think me and the rest of the world thought it’d be 28-10 Seahawks at the half.  Story of the first half is Reggie Bush.  As predicted, Bush already has over 100 yards of total offense.

9: 12—Brees completes the ugliest 4th down conversion I’ve ever seen.  By the way, David Patten is having his best game as a Saint.  The offense is clicking, why all of sudden is it coming together?  The offensive line is playing great football.  Brees has enough time to throw.

9: 16—First punt of the game for the Saints.  Steve Weatherford finally sees the field.  What up with all his tattoos?  Somebody should find out what they are and what they mean.  Andrea Kramer where are you? Seriously, who doesn’t like tattoo stories?

9:21—Do the Saints have a new defensive coordinator?  I love all this blitzing.  Roman Harper just lit up Hasselbeck.  It makes sense.  How do you cover up a weak secondary?  Send them on blitzes so they don’t have to cover receivers.  Why haven’t they thought of this yet?

9: 25—I just realized, Devery Henderson dropped a big 20 yard pass in the first quarter.  He hasn’t seen the field until just now. He caught the ball finally, but of course he was out of bounds.  What are the odds Devery gets cut tomorrow.  Not good, I know.  But he should be cut.  What good is a wide receiver who can’t catch?

9: 30—Meanwhile David Patton is having a huge game.  Just went over 100 yards receiving.

9:33—Bush just fumbled.  He’s excused though, for now.  Let’s see what the defense can do after the turnover.

9: 40—Charles Grant just plowed into Hasselbeck for a sack.  This Saints defense is playing out this world.  Seahawks have to punt.

9: 41—Ryan Plackemeier plopped the ball inside the five yard line.  Pro punters are so good.

9: 43—Brees completed an 18 yard pass to Billy Miller after dropping back to pass in the endzone.  Bush has slowed down a little bit.  Brees is picking up the slack though.  Offensive line is still rocking.

9:47—How’s this for consistency.  Brees is 7 for 7 for 60 yards and a touchdown on third downs.  Making plays when the pressure is on is how you win football games.

9: 50—NBC just showed a close up of Shaun Alexander’s face.  He has a huge gap in between his teeth.  Michael Strahan has started a trend.

9: 55—Saints defense makes a 4th down stand.  Pigs are officially flying.

10:00—So far zero points have been scored in the second half.  38 combined points in the first half, zero in the second half—weird.

10:07—Seahawks score a touchdown with a nifty little toss by Hasselbeck.  Saints are up by 11 with six and a half minutes to go.  They can put the game away with a score on this drive.

10: 13—Seahawks got the ball back and they’re driving.  The Saints are still okay.  It’s a still a two score game.

10: 14—Hasselbeck feels pain in the form of Roman Harper, his second sack of the game.

10: 16—A gift from heaven.  Josh Bullocks with the pick!  What a terrible throw by Hasselbeck.  Saints need to serve up a heavy dose of Aaron Stecker.  Don’t fumble the ball and you’ve got the win.

10: 19—Stecker three straight times up the middle.  4th down, Saints have to punt.

10: 22—Senaca Wallace with a 29 yard reception. Fred Thomas on the coverage.  What a surprise.  The Seahawks could probably line up Walter Jones in the slot against Fred Thomas and move the football.

10:26—Seahawks fail to convert on 4th down when they need both a field goal and a touchdown to tie the score.  Holmgren is going to catch some major heat for that move.

10: 28—Saints kneel it to run out the clock.

New Orleans wins their first game of the season.  They did it without scoring a single point in the second half.  I wonder when the last time that happened is.

Player of the game: Reggie Bush.  Bush carried the ball 19 times for 97 yards and added six receptions for 44 yards.  He did all his damage in the first half and it was enough for the win.

I’d like to give credit to Sean Payton.  The team was focused tonight.  They played with sense of urgency that was desperately needed after an 0-4 start.  Payton had them well prepared and he called a heck of a game.
