Saints Look to Keep Streak Alive
The Saints go into San Francisco Sunday with a two game win streak and a chance to close the lead in the NFC South.
Reggie Bush will have to be a key factor to the Saints’ success. Last year, Bush compiled for four touchdowns and 168 total yards in a 34-10 victory over the 49ers.
With Deuce McAllister out for the year, Reggie has been receiving most of the load in the backfield. In the last three games, Bush has rushed the ball 21, 19, 17 times compared to his 12, 10 and 7 times in the first three games.
The reason the Saints drafted Reggie Bush because he is a play-maker anywhere on the field. With that many touches, Bush could bust through the 49ers defense for some big yards.
Another contributing factor for the Saints success will have to be their defense. Since week one, the Saints have not allowed 100 yards rushing.
In addition, Frank Gore has not rushed for over 100 yards this season. Gore rushed for his season high last week of 88 yards against the New York Giants. Returning from injury, Alex Smith will get the start on Sunday. Charles Grant and company look to continue their sacking spree with eight sacks in the past two games.
The Saints secondary can not give up big plays this week. San Francisco has not thrown for over 210 yards this year and stopping big plays can keep the 49ers from achieving that goal. Look for Mike McKenzie and Roman Harper to have a big game with Alex Smith throwing the ball.
Last year, Drew Brees was held to only 186 yards and one touchdown. Brees will have to rebound from last year’s performance and get the ball into the end-zone. The 49ers’ defense is much improved from last year’s squad, but if Brees goes out and completes passes for good yardage it may be a long day for the 49ers’ defense.
Both of these teams go into this game with a 2-4 record. The Saints will either continue their winning ways or San Francisco will end their losing streak. To the Saints, a win brings them one step closer to the division lead.
