Saints Rally Comes Up Short
On the opening drive, the Saints looked like a team from the past four weeks. A 37 yard pass interference call helped New Orleans downfield as Reggie Bush scored on a seven yard touchdown run. From then on till the 4th quarter, the Saints looked like the team that started off the season.
At one point the game seemed over with the score 34-7. St. Louis dropped back and played a prevent zone defense for much of the 4th quarter which helped New Orleans climb back into the game. The Saints rallied back scoring three touchdowns in the final quarter. Orlando Mare’s near perfect onside kick could not be recovered by the Saints ending the game.
The key difference in the game was St. Louis’ defense. Former New Orleans head coach, Jim Haslett, had his St. Louis defense ready to play. The Rams blitzing scheme was a key factor in forcing Drew Brees to throw the ball under pressure. Brees finished the game with 272 passing yards and two big interceptions.
On the other side of the field, Marc Bulger seemed to played like the Rams of old. Bulger finished the game with 302 yards and two passing touchdowns. The Rams also included a touchdown pass by Steven Jackson to Randy McMichael. Big performances by O.J. Atogwe and Pisa Tinoisamoa on St. Louis defense were enough to seal their first victory.
With the lost, the Saints are still only one game out of first place. They will take on Houston next Sunday and Carolina the following week. The Saints schedule, the rest of the way, looks easy enough for them to pick up enough wins to win the NFC South.
