Player of the Game
This week’s Player of the Game for the Saints is quarterback Drew Brees. While the Saints lost this week, it wasn’t due to the play of Brees. Brees played a solid game, finishing with 17 of 23 and two touchdown passes. While his performance wasn’t spectacular, Brees did a solid job of moving the team and putting them in a good position to win the game. If not for a few late turnovers, then the Saints would have likely pulled out the victory and been right back in the hunt for the division title. Hopefully the Saints will be able to build on the performance of Brees and try to win out the remainder of the year to have an opportunity at the playoffs.
Saints vs. Falcons Game Preview
The Saints will be playing another division rival this week when they face off against the Atlanta Falcons. In order for the Saints to have any sort of a chance at the playoffs they will have to win the remainder of their games. To beat the Falcons the Saints will need to limit turnovers on the offense and establish the run in order to open up the passing attack. On defense they will need to pressure the quarterback consistently and try to shut down the rushing attack of the Falcons. While the Saints have more talent, it will all depend on consistency and execution if they are to have a chance to win. Hopefully they will be able to pull things together this week and get back on a winning track.
Q & A
Q & A is the question and answer section. If you have a question you would like answered, email it to SuperSaintsWeekly@yahoo.com with the subject heading of Q&A and we will try to answer the question to the best of our ability.
Q – JB, after this season any thoughts on whether they should look for a new defensive coordinator. It seems the scheme is not the greatest and the team has really struggled defensively both in 2006 and so far this year. I don’t think Gibbs is doing that great a job. With all the big plays the team has given up you’d think they were blitzing and getting burned. This hasn’t been the case; they’ve just flat out sat back on their heels and gotten blown by. Without a consistent pass rush the opposition always seems to find someone to pick on. It was Thomas last year and David this year. Seems like they are set up to fail. – JP from Boston.
A – Overall I believe Thomas and David could be serviceable cornerbacks in the right system. However, the lack of pressure from the Saints really hurts the secondary. Most great defenses usually have a strong pass rush that helps take the pressure off the secondary, or at the very least is extremely tough against the rush. The Saints seem to struggle at times against the rush and are unable to provide a pass rush on most plays. So to answer your question, I do believe that Gibbs could be in trouble if the Saints defense doesn’t show a marked improvement down the stretch. However, I also believe the Saints need to add some more play makers on defense in the off-season.
Psychos View
This week’s game against the Bucs seemed to be a perfect example of the Saints year, with highs and lows one after another. Half of the game the Saints played solid, only to slip back to the mistake oriented football that has plagued them during their losses this season. Hopefully the Saints will be able to end the season on a high note, but it is apparent in my opinion that the Saints will need to do some work on the defense in the off-season and try to add some players to step up and help add consistency for next season. While the Saints have a possibility of making the playoffs this year, their room for error is now very small and another loss would likely mean losing that possibility.
